Jamie Moyer has pitched in the majors since 1986, but it may be an injury sustained outside of MLB that forces him to hang up his cleats. Dionisio Soldevila of Tiempo de Juego reports that Moyer left a game in the Dominican winter league today after two innings with an injury to his throwing elbow. Moises Alou, the general manager of Moyer's Escogido club, tells Soldevila that Moyer "probably" won't pitch again in his career (Twitter links).

As Soldevila notes in a separate tweet, the injured elbow is the same one that forced Moyer to miss most of the second half of the 2010 season. The left-hander, who turns 48 later this month, was pitching in the Dominican league in an attempt to showcase the health of his left arm and earn a major league contract for 2011.

If the injury does derail Moyer's comeback for good, it would be an unfortunate end to an incredibly long and impressive career. The lefty has won 267 games and pitched more than 4000 innings for seven teams over the course of the quarter-century he has spent in the bigs.

By the time Jamie Moyer negotiates his next contract, he'll be 48 years old. He's older than Ruben Amaro Jr. and a number of other general managers around the majors, but those executives may be calling Moyer up in a few months. Sure, the lefty made his major league debut before players like Pablo Sandoval and Andrew McCutchen were born, but age hasn't been an obstacle for Moyer before. He signed a Julio Franco-esque multi-year deal back when he was 46.

Nobody would be interested in Moyer if he were no longer useful, but he can still pitch. His 81 mph fastball doesn't intimidate anyone, but he relies primarily on off-speed pitches. Plus, Moyer's fastball has been just as slow for most of the last decade. He doesn't walk anybody (1.8 BB/9) or strike anybody out (4.5 K/9) and thanks to some good luck on balls in play, he is allowing less than a hit per inning this year. All told, the lefty is averaging more than six innings per start and has a 4.26 ERA.

That kind of production led to one-year deals worth about $5MM for veteran starters like Doug Davis, Jon Garland and Vicente Padilla last winter. For Moyer to command a similar deal next year, he has to keep pitching well and he has to want to play. He said before the season that he's open to playing in 2011 and if he keeps pitching like this, major league teams will probably be more than willing to accommodate.

Despite being 47-years-old and dealing with a myriad of physical ailments during the last six months, Phillies' starter Jamie Moyer is open to pitching in 2011 according to Andy Martino of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“You know, I’m going to leave that as an open-ended question because I don’t know how to answer that,” Moyer said when asked if he expected to retire after this year, when his current contract expires. “It could be (my last season). It potentially could be. But so could have last year. So could have two years ago, so could have five years ago.

Moyer finished the 2009 season injured after tearing three muscles in his groin and lower abdomen in late-September, and was then hospitalized in October and November due to possible blood infections following the subsequent surgery. He also had a minor knee procedure last month.  

After posting a 4.94 ERA and being demoted to the bullpen last year, Moyer will earn $6.5MM in 2010 as part of the two-year, $13MM deal he signed last winter. Sitting at 258 career wins, he has a very outside shot at the magical 300 win mark.
