Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Braves, Lohse, Pedro, Bay

By Cork Gaines | March 13, 2009 at 7:57am CDT

On this date 72 years ago, Lou Gehrig signed a one-year deal for $38K and a $750 signing bonus. This contract came on the heels of a season in which Gehrig hit .354-49-152 with a strikeout to walk ratio of 130-to-46 and a 190 OPS+. The following season, Gehrig would hit .351-37-159 (177 OPS+) in what would turn out to be his last full healthy season. With only a few weeks left until the ’09 regular season begins, let’s take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • The Launching Pad gives us a list of mid-season trade targets for the Braves, with Brian Giles at the top.
  • Jorge Says No! lists Kyle Lohse as one of the Hot Stove’s big winners.
  • Feeling Dodger Blue takes a look at the fifth starter options for the Dodgers and sees Pedro Martinez as the best available option.
  • Fire Brand of the American League says Jason Bay is no Manny Ramirez, but he is a suitable replacement.
  • UmpBump takes a look back at the off-season moves of the Cubs and the Dodgers.

Heyman On Bay, Papelbon, Manny, Braves

By Tim Dierkes | February 20, 2009 at 4:58pm CDT

The latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman…

  • Red Sox GM Theo Epstein says he’s had "casual conversations" about a contract extension with Jason Bay.  We learned a few days ago that Bay is open to an extension but doesn’t consider it the "end-all, be-all."
  • Jonathan Papelbon says he’s a "gambling man," and he prefers to go year-to-year rather than sign long-term.  Boston’s offer was far off his expectations, and he wants to set the market for closers.  Papelbon is under team control through 2011, and will earn $6.25MM in his first arb year.
  • Heyman says there’s "some indication Dodgers owner Frank McCourt is about to become involved in the Manny Ramirez negotiations."  Maybe that’ll get things moving.
  • Heyman says the Braves will look at Garret Anderson, Jim Edmonds, and Luis Gonzalez, though ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick has indicated the Braves aren’t interested in the veteran free agents.
  • The Orioles’ acquisition of Felix Pie cost Edmonds a chance to sign with the team.

Red Sox Rumors: Lugo, Bay, Varitek, Beckett

By Tim Dierkes | February 16, 2009 at 8:52am CDT

The latest on the Red Sox, courtesy of WEEI’s Alex Speier.

  • Julio Lugo says he’s in the best shape of his career.  The $9MM shortstop won’t be happy if he’s on the bench this year.  Speier believes he’ll ask for a trade if he doesn’t win the competition with Jed Lowrie.  Lugo was following the Tigers trade rumors earlier this winter.
  • Jason Bay remains open to an extension, but admitted "it’s not the end-all, be-all."  Bay will be part of the 2009-10 free agent class if the Sox don’t lock him up.
  • According to the AP, catcher Jason Varitek spoke of spending the rest of his career with the Red Sox.
  • WEEI’s Rob Bradford spoke to Josh Beckett, who hopes to remain in Boston past his current contract.  The Red Sox have a $12MM club option for a $2MM buyout for 2010.
  • Bradford also reports that the Brad Wilkerson signing is official; he’s in camp on a minor league deal.

Bay Yet To Talk Extension With Red Sox

By Tim Dierkes | February 4, 2009 at 9:01am CDT

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, outfielder Jason Bay has yet to discuss a contract extension with the Red Sox.  Bay put his chances of reaching free agency after the ’09 season at 50-50, while also professing his love for Boston.  Click here to take a look at the rest of the 2010 free agent market – there are plenty of good hitters aside from Bay.

On January 12th, Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe wrote that the Red Sox plan to discuss an extension with Bay before the season begins but after the remaining big-name free agent outfielders sign.  We’re still waiting on Bobby Abreu, Adam Dunn, and Manny Ramirez however.

Red Sox To Talk Bay Extension Before Season

By Tim Dierkes | January 12, 2009 at 11:16am CDT

According to Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox plan to discuss a contract extension with outfielder Jason Bay before the season begins but after the remaining big-name free agent outfielders sign.  The depressed free agent market could lead to a reasonably-priced extension for Bay, if he’s willing.  Bay signed a four-year deal in ’05 to cover his arbitration years.

Bay’s agent may advise his client to test the 2009-10 free agent market; he’d be among the best available hitters.

Matt Holliday Trade Roundup

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2008 at 4:45pm CDT

It seems that the Rockies will send left fielder Matt Holliday to the A’s for Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith, and Huston Street soon (assuming Smith’s elbow checks out).  While the A’s were rumored to be in the mix for Holliday, the trade still comes as a surprise to most.  Let’s round up today’s links on the topic.

  • Nick Cafardo says the Red Sox were briefly involved in talks for Holliday.
  • ESPN’s Peter Gammons says Beane first engaged the Red Sox on Jason Bay before moving on to Holliday.
  • Troy Renck says Holliday is flying to Oakland today to meet with team officials.  Garrett Atkins hopes the Holliday trade keeps him in Colorado.
  • Dave Cameron thinks Holliday can hit around .300/.380/.500 for the A’s.
  • Athletics Nation considers this a message that the A’s are trying to compete in ’09, and expects more additions.  They also believe Billy Beane will take stock in July and decide whether to trade Holliday or keep him all year and take the draft picks.  I agree on both points.
  • Jack Etkin of the Rocky Mountain News and Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post have scouting reports on the players Colorado will receive.
  • Depressed Fan tries to get a handle on Beane’s motivation for the trade.
  • Holliday’s dad would like to see his son join the Yankees.

Red Sox Rumors: Bay, Tazawa, Kawakami, Lugo

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 4:03pm CDT

Collecting today’s Red Sox rumors and links…

  • Nick Cafardo says the Red Sox did not meet with C.C. Sabathia’s agent and he doesn’t appear to be in their plans.
  • The Sox are eyeing southpaw reliever Billy Traber, according to WEEI’s Alex Speier.
  • Scott Boras believes Derek Lowe would be a good fit in Boston or New York.  Nick Cafardo says Lowe would like to return to Boston, maybe even at a slight discount.
  • Jason Bay’s agents say he’s loving Boston and is open to a contract extension.
  • When asked about the possibility of Manny Ramirez signing with the Yankees, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein basically said it’s not his concern.
  • Otherwise, the theme of Epstein’s comments was flexibility.  Justin Masterson could be a starter or reliever, and Epstein won’t get hung up on acquiring any one player.
  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the Red Sox are heavily involved on Junichi Tazawa, though the Braves and Mariners are after him as well.  The Sox also like Kenshin Kawakami and may have interest in Paul Byrd and Javier Vazquez.
  • Cafardo believes the Mets and White Sox have interest in Julio Lugo.  It would have to be a bad contract swap.  Cafardo adds that the Red Sox view Jacoby Ellsbury as their starting center fielder, and there has been trade interest in Coco Crisp.
  • Boston’s luxury tax threshold for 2009 is $160.5MM.
  • By tomorrow the Red Sox should receive the Jason Varitek book compiled by the Boras corporation.  Boras gave a ridiculous Varitek pitch to the media; click the link for quotes.  Epstein will meet with Boras today to discuss his clients.
  • The Red Sox plan to talk to the Rangers, with Taylor Teagarden, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Gerald Laird as possibilities.  For Teagarden, the Red Sox would probably have to give up Clay Buchholz or Michael Bowden.

Massarotti On The Red Sox

By Tim Dierkes | October 23, 2008 at 1:40pm CDT

Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe takes a look at the upcoming offseason for the Red Sox.

Massarotti says the Sox have had internal discussions about Mark Teixeira, which is not a surprise.  The Red Sox definitely have the money for him.  Signing Tex would necessitate trading Mike Lowell and moving Kevin Youkilis to third base.    Lowell is owed $24MM over the next two years, and he has no-trade protection.  He had hip surgery recently and is expected to be ready for spring training.  My guess at possible suitors: the White Sox, Indians, Twins, Angels, Brewers, Reds, Dodgers, and Giants.

I thought the Sox would be players for C.C. Sabathia, but Massarotti suggests that is unlikely.  He says Boston officials have concerns about Sabathia’s long-term durability.  Massarotti does not see the Red Sox as players for any big name starter.

One other note: the Sox have yet to discuss an extension with Jason Bay’s agent.
