Odds and Ends: Lowry, Kawakami, Lowe, Young

Crasnick On Abreu, Eckstein, Bloomquist, Lowry

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick has a bunch of new info.

  • The Braves’ interest in Bobby Abreu is described as "lukewarm at best."  And he’d have to be a huge bargain for the Mets to get involved.  Abreu’s agent has his work cut out for him.
  • Two middle infield possibilities for the Royals: David Eckstein and Willie Bloomquist.  The Royals also considered Jerry Hairston Jr., but are concerned with his health record.  Also, Dayton Moore continues to deal with payroll limitations.
  • The Rangers are "keeping an eye on" Giants starters Noah Lowry and Jonathan Sanchez.  Lowry had arthroscopic elbow surgery in September.

Giants Will Listen To Proposals Involving Sanchez

Now that the San Francisco Giants have lefty veteran Randy Johnson locked up, they are willing to listen to offers involving Jonathan Sanchez. Chris Haft of MLB.com asked Giants general manager Brian Sabean about the possibility after signing Johnson.

From Haft:

“We’re going to have to be open-minded,” Sabean said, although he repeated that he wouldn’t obtain a player who’s eligible for free agency after 2009.

The Giants have been listed as one of the teams who might be a good trade partner with the New York Yankees for a corner outfielder, in particular Xavier Nady, but he doesn’t meet Sabean’s requirement regarding free agency. Nady’s contract ends after the ’09 season.

Odds and Ends: Nelson, Atkins, Taveras

After a hectic Winter Meetings, it’s been a slow weekend.  Today’s links…

Rangers Rumors: Millwood, Sanchez, Salty

MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan sums up the latest Rangers buzz…

  • The Brewers inquired about Kevin Millwood, but the teams didn’t find a match.  Millwood has a limited no-trade clause and will earn $11MM next year.  If he pitches 182 innings in ’09, a $12MM salary for ’10 will become guaranteed.
  • A Rangers source told Sullivan the Giants "made it abundantly clear" they’re not trading Jonathan Sanchez.
  • The Royals are interested in Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but talks didn’t go anywhere.

Marlins Catcher Rumors

Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has the latest on the Marlins’ trade talks for a catcher.

The Rangers could part with Max Ramirez or Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but want a frontline starter type such as Chris Volstad, Josh Johnson, or Ricky Nolasco.  The Marlins aren’t willing to do that, but instead could flip Jonathan Sanchez to Texas if they get him.  Or, they could send Anibal Sanchez if they add a starter.

The Marlins also have an eye on Pittsburgh’s Ronny Paulino.  Meanwhile current Marlin Matt Treanor could be non-tendered or traded for a minor piece.

Giants Rumors: Burrell, Turnbow, Sanchez

9:22pm: Baggarly says Brian Sabean touched base with 25 teams today.  Baggarly does not buy recent rumors connecting the Giants to Cantu, Encarnacion, and Hank Blalock.

6:08pm: Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News provides the Giants rumors…

  • Pat Burrell would love to play for the Giants, but he’s far down on the team’s list due to defensive concerns.
  • The Giants offered Derrick Turnbow a non-guaranteed contract.  The Pirates are another team eyeing Turnbow.
  • Jonathan Sanchez is a popular name in trade talks.  Baggarly doesn’t foresee a Sanchez for Edwin Encarnacion or Jorge Cantu straight up type deal.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Teixeira, Closers, Castillo, Cantu

Ken Rosenthal has a new column up, let’s take a look at the highlights:

  • Rosenthal doesn’t see Mark Teixeira signing with the Nationals, even for the rumored ten-year, $200MM contract. He’s got better options in the Angels, Red Sox, and Yankees. Scott Boras managed to get Alex Rodriguez a ten-year deal with a losing team in 2000 when he signed with the Rangers, but Rosenthal doesn’t forsee a repeat.
  • The Indians are waiting on the Mets’ closer decision to make a decision of their own. Once New York signs or trades for a closer, the market will likely collapse. The Mets are preparing simultaneous offers to Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes, and Kerry Wood.
  • The Brewers could spend big money on a closer once they hear from Ben Sheets and C.C. Sabathia. If the Brewers can somehow retain both, they won’t have money to spend on a closer and would likely have to trade Prince Fielder.
  • The Mets are desperately trying to unload Luis Castillo so they can make a run at Orlando Hudson. They’re having no luck though, even in trying to swap him for another bad contract. The Rangers rejected a swap of Castillo for Vicente Padilla.
  • Nationals GM Jim Bowden is interested in Willy Taveras. Doesn’t make any sense to me. The Nats already have Lastings Milledge, Josh Willingham, Elijah Dukes, and Austin Kearns.
  • The Rockies prefer to keep Garrett Atkins, but the Twins, Dodgers, Giants, and Phillies are all interested. Chase Utley has been a long-time supporter of bringing his former UCLA teammate to the Phils for a reunion.
  • The Marlins are getting several inquiries on Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla. They don’t plan to trade either, though if the Giants were to offer Jonathan Sanchez for Cantu, the Marlins would jump at the chance.
  • Jermaine Dye, Mike Cameron, Marcus Thames, and Marlon Byrd are all available via the trade market, for teams needing a right-handed hitting outfielder. Rosenthal still feels Cameron could still end up in pinstripes.

Giants, Rangers Talking Blalock?

T.R. Sullivan writes that the Rangers and Giants will discuss a potential deal to send Hank Blalock to San Francisco.

The teams match up well on paper, with the Giants needing offense and the Rangers in need of pitching. Texas is interested in Matt Cain, but know the Giants won’t move him easily (especially for Blalock). Their focus will likely shift to Jonathan Sanchez.

Blalock still doesn’t seem like enough for Sanchez. Can the two teams work out a package?
