White Sox Designate Jose Rondon, Activate Eloy Jimenez

The White Sox have designated infielder Jose Rondon for assignment, tweets the Athletic’s James Fegan. In a corresponding roster move, the club has activated rookie corner outfielder Eloy Jimenez from the 10-day injured list.

Rondon, 25, has seen action in three MLB seasons but tallied just 289 career plate appearances. The majority of those have come this season, but he’s limped to a .197/.265/.282 line in 2019. A light-hitting utilityman, Rondon did slug 18 home runs in 2018 with Chicago’s International League affiliate, but that power outburst was unprecedented and he hasn’t managed to follow up on it this year. Given his age and reputation as an above-average defensive infielder, perhaps he’ll draw some interest league-wide, but any claiming team would have to keep him on its active roster, since he’s out-of-options. It seems likely he’ll clear waivers and return to Triple-A Charlotte.

Jimenez spent the minimum ten days on the IL with a right elbow contusion. The former top prospect hasn’t amazed in his rookie season, but his .244/.307/.483 line is more-than-adequate for a 22 year-old. The prodigious power hitter has popped 17 home runs on the year and still projects as a focal point of the club’s rebuild, even if he’ll need to refine his plate approach to tap into all of his immense offensive upside.

White Sox Activate Avisail Garcia, Designate Trayce Thompson

The White Sox announced Friday that they’ve activated both Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia from the disabled list. In order to clear roster space, infielder Jose Rondon has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, while outfielder Trayce Thompson has been designated for assignment.

Chicago has been without Avisail Garcia since April 23 thanks to a hamstring strain that proved severe enough to sideline him for almost two months. The slightly younger of the two Garcias activated today (he turned 27 last week shortly before embarking on a minor league rehab assignment), Avisail was off to a slow start prior to his injury, hitting .233/.250/.315 with no walks and 17 strikeouts in 76 plate appearances.

Of course, he’s also fresh off a breakout 2017 season in which he raked at a .330/.380/.506 clip, hitting 18 homers, 27 doubles and five triples along the way. A .380 BABIP undoubtedly contributed to that breakout to an extent, but Garcia’s career-best hard-contact rates and a .359 xwOBA lent some legitimacy to the breakout, even if he’s likely to regress a bit from last year’s pace.

As for Leury Garcia, he’ll return nearly a month due to a sprained left knee. The South Side Swiss army knife has seen action at every position aside from catcher since debuting in 2013 (including two innings of relief pitching), though he’s settled in primarily as an outfielder over the past couple of seasons. He was hitting .262/.308/.369 with a pair of homers and nine steals at the time of his injury. The return of both Garcias should will cut into playing time for each of Daniel Palka, Charlie Tilson and Adam Engel. Matt Davidson, too, could see fewer at-bats for the time being now that there’s a more crowded mix at DH.

Thompson, meanwhile, is being designated for assignment for the fourth time since Spring Training. After being designated by the Dodgers, he made his way from the Yankees to the A’s to the White Sox — the club that originally selected him in the second round of the 2009 draft. Unfortunately for Thompson, his return to the ChiSox didn’t prove to be productive. In 130 trips to the plate back with his original team, Thompson limped to a .116/.153/.215 batting line. He did provide some heroics in his return tour, launching a walk-off homer against the Twins back in early May, but his overall lack of production proved too great to hang onto his roster spot.

The Sox will have a week to trade Thompson or run him throughout outright waivers. He’s yet to clear waivers at any point in his career, though this current lackluster showing could allow the Sox to pass him through unclaimed and outright him back to Charlotte.

White Sox Place Yoan Moncada On 10-Day DL

The White Sox have placed young second baseman Yoan Moncada on the 10-day DL, per a club announcement. He’ll be replaced by fellow infielder Jose Rondon.

At the moment, it does not seem as if there’s much reason to expect a lengthy absence for Moncada. He has been diagnosed with hamstring tightness, an issue that has forced him out of two recent ballgames. But Moncada said yesterday that he felt he’d only need a few days off, as James Fegan of The Athletic tweeted.

It’s certainly understandable that the Sox would take a conservative course with Moncada, who’ll turn 23 later this month. He’s off to a strong start, turning in 132 plate appearances of .263/.359/.509 hitting with six home runs and four stolen bases. Moncada has also graded as a positive overall with the glove and on the bases.

That output does come with a worrisome 37.1% strikeout rate for a player who’ll probably always swing and miss a fair bit. Though he’s also walking in 12.9% of his plate appearances, Moncada surely won’t maintain a .407 batting average on balls in play. Of course, it’s certainly worth noting as well that he’s legitimately stinging the ball when he does make contact, with a 95.0 mph average exit velocity that’s among the best in baseball.

The 24-year-old Rondon, meanwhile, will get his second crack at the majors after a brief call-up with the Padres in 2016. He has been off to a nice start at Triple-A, turning in a .290/.347/.473 slash, though he’s also striking out at a significantly higher rate (24.8%) than he has in prior seasons as a professional. Rondon came to Chicago in a swap with the Friars in January of this year.

White Sox Acquire Jose Rondon

The White Sox have acquired infielder Jose Rondon from the Padres, per a club announcement. Cash considerations are headed to San Diego in return.

Rondon was designated recently by the Pads. Now, he’ll head to another rebuilding organization where he could challenge Tyler Saladino for a spot on the team as a utility piece or perhaps head to Triple-A for further development. Of course, it’s also possible the Sox will ultimately seek to sneak him through waivers.

While the Padres have not been settled at short for some time, the team has quite a few young players filtering up at the position and elected to acquire Freddy Galvis to hold things down for the coming season. That left Rondon — who was originally acquired in the Huston Street trade — without much of an opportunity and ultimately without a roster spot.

The 23-year-old reached the majors briefly in 2016 but has mostly played of late in the upper minors. Last year, he spent most of his time at Double-A and turned in a solid overall .293/.347/.442 output with seven home runs in 347 total minor-league plate appearances. With a high-average bat and good defensive profile, it’s certainly conceivable that Rondon could turn into a useful MLB asset, though he has yet to develop much in the way of power and hasn’t drawn many walks in the upper minors.

Padres Designate Jose Rondon

The Padres have designated infielder Jose Rondon for assignment, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Twitter link). Rondon’s spot on the Padres’ 40-man roster will go to reliever Craig Stammen, whose deal with the team is now official.

Rondon, 23, has been a member of the San Diego organization since it acquired him from the Angels in a trade involving reliever Huston Street in July 2014. At the time, Rondon ranked among the Angels’ top prospects, though he hasn’t yet emerged as a regular major leaguer. During his time with the Padres, the righty-swinging Rondon has accrued just 26 big league plate appearances and hit .120/.154/.120 over that limited sample. Rondon divided last season between the Double-A and Triple-A levels, where he batted .293/.347/.442 in 347 PAs.

With one option remaining, Rondon could conceivably catch on with another club and continue to serve as minor league depth in 2018.

Padres Sign Cesar Vargas To MLB Deal

The Padres have signed righty Cesar Vargas to a major league deal, the club announced. San Diego also added just-acquired outfielder Manuel Margot and infielder Jose Rondon to its 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.

Vargas is a 23-year-old who spent the last seven seasons in the Yankees organization before reaching minor league free agency. He is the second former New York reliever to sign a major league deal as a minor league free agent in recent days, joining new Cubs pitcher Andury Acevedo.

It’s not clear exactly what San Diego’s plans are for its new right-hander, though the team will have several option seasons to work with. Vargas reached the Triple-A level late last season, but spent the bulk of his time at Double-A. In 67 2/3 innings there — his first stint at the second-to-last stop in the minors — Vargas worked to a 2.79 ERA with 8.6 K/0 against 2.9 BB/9.

Added To The 40-Man: Reds, Padres, Braves, Jays, Cards, Nats

The deadline for teams to add players to their 40-man roster and thereby protect them from this year’s Rule 5 Draft is tomorrow night at 8:00pm ET. As such, there will be a large volume of players added to 40-man rosters in the coming day as well as a handful of moves to clear 40-man space for those new additions. The Astros’ trade of Jonathan Villar and release of Robbie Grossman and Luis Cruz earlier today, for instance, created three new spots on their 40-man for the purpose of protecting prospects. Players who signed at 18 or younger must be added to the 40-man roster within five years of signing or be exposed to all 29 other teams in the Rule 5 Draft. Players who were 19 or older at the time they signed must be added within four seasons.

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo has more specifics on the intricacies of the Rule 5 Draft for those that are interested. Mayo also notes that 11 of MLB.com’s Top 100 prospects are in need of protection from the Rule 5 Draft, and he goes on to list the players from each organization’s Top 30 prospects who must be added by tomorrow night in order to be protected.
