Spanish Links: Abreu, Pedro, Tejada

By Nick Collias | March 23, 2012 at 2:32pm CDT

Don't expect Pedro to pull a Pettitte. Links are in Spanish…

  • Bobby Abreu doesn't put a whole lot of stock in manager Mike Scioscia's prediction that the 38-year-old will get 400 plate appearances this season. "I've learned not to have much confidence in these people, but I hope they live up to what they told me," Abreu told Billy Russo at Lider en Deportes. "How long am I going to have to continue proving to people what I am, and what I'm able to do? At times it's like the work one does doesn't get appreciated, but here I am, and we'll continue the fight." Likewise, he said not knowing how much his time will be split between right field and DH has altered his preparation for the season. "It's clearly affected me, because I'm not used to that, and I don't know why they did it, but whatever; I'll keep on keeping on." Abreu said a month ago that he'd prefer being traded to playing off the bench.
  • Pedro Martinez said in December that he would soon make his retirement official, but almost four months later, an announcement hasn't come. Martinez recently appeared on the television program El Despertador in his native Dominican Republic and said an official statement is nevertheless on the way. "We're working, and we're going to send out a press release," he said (as transcribed by Panorama Diario). "We're going to pick a date where we'll make an official announcement, and at the same time, give the Dominican public the opportunity to see it."
  • Miguel Tejada still hasn't received any offers this offseason, but he has no plans to explore options in other leagues, the veteran infielder told the Dominican radio show Grandes en los Deportes (Twitter links.) "I play baseball because I like it. I don't have economic problems," Tejada said. "I believe there's still a lot of playing for me to do in the US."

Miguel Tejada Hopes To Return To Athletics

By Tim Dierkes | February 29, 2012 at 8:06am CDT

"Tell Billy to give me a call," free agent infielder Miguel Tejada implored Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, campaigning for a job with his old team.  Aware of third baseman's Scott Sizemore's season-ending injury, Tejada said he'd love to return to the A's and he doesn't want big money.  Tejada began his career with the A's, winning an MVP award with them in 2002.

Tejada told Slusser he wasn't happy in San Francisco last year, where he posted a .239/.270/.326 line in 343 plate appearances before being cut loose.  The infielder feels he can still play, and friend Yoenis Cespedes would benefit from his presence.  Cespedes is likely to arrive in to A's camp in Phoenix this weekend, reports Slusser.

Slusser considers a even a minor league deal with the A's a longshot for Tejada.  The A's are giving Josh Donaldson a chance to replace Sizemore this year.

Quick Hits: Manny, Braves, Oliver, Tejada

By Mike Axisa | January 5, 2012 at 11:37pm CDT

Some links as Thursday turns into Friday…

  • As part of his comeback attempt, Manny Ramirez will work out for teams later this month according to ESPN's Buster Olney (on Twitter). Manny was officially reinstated last month, and he indicated that the "doors are open" for a minor league contract.
  • Braves GM Frank Wren told MLB.com's Mark Bowman that he feels both Jair Jurrjens and Martin Prado will be with the team at the start of Spring Training. They still have interest in Adam Jones and could continue to pursue the outfielder if the Orioles lower their demands.
  • The Yankees never inquired on lefty reliever Darren Oliver before he signed with the Blue Jays, reports MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith (on Twitter). New York has brought in southpaws Hideki Okajima and Mike O'Connor on minor league deals this offseason.
  • Miguel Tejada is training in Miami as he looks to make a comeback, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). The 37-year-old was designated for assignment by the Giants in August after hitting .239/.270/.326 in 343 plate appearances.
  • Matt Eddy of Baseball America recapped the last three weeks of minor league transactions. We've covered all the significant moves here, but you can check out which low-level minor leaguers your favorite team recently released.

Free Agent Notes: Young, Rowand, Manny, Francisco

By Tim Dierkes | December 6, 2011 at 3:45pm CDT

Free agent notes I found lying around on Twitter…

  • Righty Chris Young should be ready for spring training following shoulder capsule surgery, his agent told MLB.com's Corey Brock.
  • Aaron Rowand is looking for a big league job, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.  The Phillies said no.
  • Manny Ramirez is calling teams directly in his search for employment, tweets Bob Klapisch.
  • Reliever Frank Francisco is likely to sign elsewhere in the wake of the Blue Jays acquiring Sergio Santos, GM Alex Anthopoulos told reporters today.
  • Infielder Miguel Tejada hopes for a Major League deal, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
  • More than a dozen scouts are expected to watch Joel Zumaya throw next week, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and Padres are among the team's that will be in attendance.
  • Sidney Ponson has no intention of pitching again, writes MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko.  Currently, Ponson is contemplating whether to purchase a boat.  I say go for it, big guy!

Miguel Tejada Plans To Play In 2012

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 9, 2011 at 3:40pm CDT

Miguel Tejada told Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportes.com that he has no intention of retiring. The shortstop, who was released by the Giants yesterday, says he’ll play winter ball in the Dominican Republic to get back in shape for another season in the Major Leagues.

Tejada is coming off of a disappointing season in San Francisco (he acknowledges that he didn't have a good time with the Giants). The 37-year-old hit .239/.270/.326 with four homers in 343 plate appearances. He split his time equally between third and short and even appeared at second base for the first time in his career.

Tejada, a 15-year veteran of the Major Leagues, will have to accept a substantial paycut from the $6.5MM salary he earned this season in order to play in 2012. He'll likely be looking at a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training 2012.

Giants Place Tejada, Rowand On Release Waivers

By Dan Mennella | September 8, 2011 at 5:12pm CDT

The Giants have placed infielder Miguel Tejada and outfielder Aaron Rowand on waivers for the purpose of their unconditional releases, tweets Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Both Tejada and Rowand were designated for assignment on Aug. 31, so it appears GM Brian Sabean could not trade either player, as Schulman notes.

Tejada, 37, hit .239/.270/.326 in 343 plate appearances with San Francisco after signing a one-year, $6.5MM contract in November 2010. Rowand, 34, hit .233/.274/.347 in 351 PAs. The Giants had to eat the balance of his 2011 salary plus the $12MM he's owed for 2012.

NL West Notes: Tejada, Rowand, Harang

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 31, 2011 at 7:58pm CDT

The Giants designated Aaron Rowand and Miguel Tejada for assignment today before shutting out the Cubs 4-0. Here are some links from the NL West, starting with the latest on the Giants…

  • Grant Brisbee of McCovey Chronicles says it’s probably too late for a shakeup to affect the Giants’ season. They trail the D'Backs by 5.5 games, so their postseason chances are slim, but they got better today and for next season by designating Rowand and Tejada for assignment, Brisbee argues.
  • There will be no dynasty for the Giants, Jon Paul Morosi writes at FOX Sports.
  • ESPN.com's Jim Bowden and Padres GM Jed Hoyer agree that MLB should reduce the number of players MLB teams are allowed to call up in September.
  • A trade involving Padres starter Aaron Harang has become more likely, according to Morosi.
  • The Padres are still discussing Chad Qualls with multiple teams, according to Morosi (on Twitter).

Giants Designate Miguel Tejada For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | August 31, 2011 at 12:30pm CDT

The Giants designated infielder Miguel Tejada for assignment, reports Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News.

Tejada, 37, posted the worst offensive season of his career with a .239/.270/.326 line in 343 plate appearances.  He split his time between shortstop and third base.

The Giants signed Tejada to a one-year, $6.5MM deal in December to be their starting shortstop after losing Juan Uribe to the Dodgers and missing out on other targets.  From the beginning, that felt like a hefty price for a stopgap.  The Giants are eating $1MM in salary by cutting Tejada now, for a total of $14.8MM given Aaron Rowand's dismissal.

International Links: Felix, Tejada, Céspedes

By Nick Collias | July 13, 2011 at 9:30pm CDT

With over 20 international players across AL and NL rosters last night, the quotes were flowing in both of America's native tongues. Links are in Spanish…

  • Felix Hernandez wants to stay in Seattle well beyond the end of his contract in 2014, the reigning Cy Young winner told Manuel Lira at the Venezuelan paper Líder en Deportes. "Hopefully Seattle locks me up further," Hernandez said. "I want to sign for more. At least five years more." As for any chance of being traded to New York or elsewhere, Hernandez dismissed the notion as "just rumors."
  • At a charity event in the Dominican Republic yesterday, six-time former All-Star Miguel Tejada sounded undecided about the direction of his career. "I won't disgrace myself in order to continue playing," he told Juan Mercado of the Dominican daily Hoy. "With the pride that I have, I don't think anyone is going to see me embarrassing myself in baseball, when I feel that I'm not useful enough to be in the Major Leagues." On the other hand, Tejada told Freddy Tapia from Listin Diario, "I'm used to having good years with losing teams. Now the opposite is happening, and the truth is that I'm enjoying it."
  • Cuban National Team star center fielder Yoennis Céspedes has been missing for almost two weeks. In a piece today, Jorge Ebro at the Miami-based El Nuevo Herald explains, "His presence hasn't been reported, nobody responds at his telephone, and people are talking about three possible hypotheses: that he is in the power of the island authorities, that he is hidden somewhere in the country, or that he took to the sea," in an attempt to escape Cuba. Cuban baseball writer Fernando Vilá tells Ebro, "In years of following Cuban baseball, I don't remember a case like this."

Quick Hits: D’Backs, Figgins, Tejada, McCourt

By Mark Polishuk | June 8, 2011 at 10:20pm CDT

As Anthony Rizzo prepares for his Major League debut tomorrow with the Padres, it was one year ago today that Stephen Strasburg and Mike Stanton both made their first appearances in the majors.  Both star prospects lived up to the hype — Strasburg recorded 14 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings against the Pirates, while Stanton went 3-for-5 (all singles) and scored twice against the Phillies.

Some items from around the league…

  • The Diamondbacks were judged as the biggest winners of the amateur draft, writes Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com.  Mayo spoke to a number of scouts to produce a list of the five teams who had the best drafts, with three AL East teams making the cut.
  • Fangraphs' Joe Pawlikowski wonders how long the Mariners can afford to keep putting Chone Figgins in the lineup.  Pawlikowski also predicts that the Giants will release Miguel Tejada once Pablo Sandoval returns from the DL.
  • Dodgers owner Frank McCourt will be able to meet the team's payroll on June 15, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
  • In a radio appearance on the Mut & Merloni Show today, Peter Gammons noted the lack of top-quality arms available at this year's trade deadline.  Gammons said a pitching-needy team like the Yankees would have to look at pitchers like Brett Myers or Edwin Jackson, while he shoots down the idea that Felix Hernandez, Francisco Liriano or any of the Athletics' young arms would be on the market.  WEEI's Jerry Spar has the full transcript of Gammons' appearance here.
