Pat Burrell

What’s Next For The Braves?

By Tim Dierkes | December 22, 2008 at 7:55am CDT

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution sums up the Braves’ current known targets in his latest blog post.  As O’Brien notes, things have not gone according to plan for the Braves this winter.

  • The Braves have yet to indicate interest in Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell for their left field vacancy.  Juan Rivera might’ve been an option; he re-signed with the Angels.  Since the Braves struggled against lefties in 2008, Burrell would be a better fit.
  • They have not indicated any interest in Ben Sheets, nor have they shown serious interest in Derek Lowe.  The Braves’ #7 draft pick next year is protected, should they sign one of the two.
  • The Braves are "squarely in the bidding" for Japanese starter Kenshin Kawakami.

Heyman: Burrell A Fit For Tampa Bay

By Alex Walsh | December 20, 2008 at 6:14pm CDT

Jon Heyman calls a potential Pat Burrell signing by the Tampa Bay Rays a "real possibility," in his latest blog post. Heyman says Burrell would be signed as a designated hitter.

Other free agents on the Rays’ short list include Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, Garrett Anderson and Ken Griffey Jr., according to the update. The Rays are focused on upgrading their offense this offseason.

Alex Walsh can be reached at alexander.walsh@gmail.com.

Angels Agree To Terms With Juan Rivera

By Tim Dierkes | December 19, 2008 at 2:44pm CDT

2:44pm: The AP reports Rivera’s three-year deal is worth $12.75MM.  It might turn out OK if Rivera is able to hit .300 to push his OBP to an acceptable range.

FRIDAY, 1:49pm: ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick says Rivera has agreed to a three-year contract with the Angels.  Three years seems excessive, but we don’t know the money yet.  Does this take the Halos out of the mix for Manny Ramirez?

THURSDAY, 10:37pm: According to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, the Angels are nearing a three-year agreement with free agent outfielder Juan Rivera.

Brown says the Halos are pursuing other free agents as well and operating as if Mark Teixeira will sign with the Red Sox.  GM Tony Reagins has talked to the agents for Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, and Adam Dunn, but not Milton Bradley.  The Angels may also sign a closer, and Brian Fuentes makes sense.

Odds And Ends: Cameron, Abreu, Treanor

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 18, 2008 at 9:50pm CDT

Links for Thursday night…

  • Brian Cashman phoned Doug Melvin to explain that he hadn’t called earlier because the Yanks have "a lot of things going on." The Brewers GM said he’s "probably going to hang on to" Mike Cameron.
  • Ozzie Guillen spoke with Bobby Abreu and said "interest exists" from the White Sox perspective.
  • GM Dave Dombrowski was part of the reason Matt Treanor chose the Tigers.
  • T.R. Sullivan continues to track interest in Ben Sheets, and doesn’t see the Yankees being very aggressive on that front.
  • Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell don’t deserve raises if you ask Rob Neyer, but he knows they’re likely to get them.
  • Kerry Wood sounds happy to be in Cleveland and has "no desire to ever start again."
  • The other top reliever to be introduced today, J.J. Putz, said he expected to become a Tiger.

Phillies Sign Raul Ibanez

By Cork Gaines | December 16, 2008 at 11:00am CDT

TUESDAY: The Phillies’ three-year, $31.5MM deal with Ibanez is official.

FRIDAY, 12:45pm: Geoff Baker offers commentary on the signing.  He says the Cubs cooled on Ibanez over defensive concerns while the Angels remained in a Mark Teixeira holding pattern.

7:56am: Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Phillies have signed Raul Ibanez to a three-year deal. Rosenthal says the contract is worth $30MM. The deal is pending a physical.

As a type A free agent, the Mariners will receive the Phillies’ first round pick next year (#28) and a supplemental pick between the first and second round.  With Ibanez now the everyday left fielder, Jayson Stark says the Phillies will cut ties with Pat Burrell.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Hunsicker, Burrell

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 2:30pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • According to the Newberg Report mailing list and CBSSports.com, the Rangers re-signed pitcher Doug Mathis to a minor league deal.
  • Joe Nelson’s been popular since being non-tendered – he’s heard from "at least 12-14 teams."  Ruben Amaro Jr. said today the Phillies inquired on "20 or so" non-tendered players.
  • Adam Everett’s deal with the Tigers is official – $1MM plus incentives.
  • MLB.com’s Barry Bloom spoke to Padres owner John Moores.
  • Richard Justice doesn’t think Drayton McLane would ask Ed Wade to trade Roy Oswalt, but he could see Oswalt requesting a trade.
  • Dave Sheinin says nothing has happened with Mark Teixeira since the Winter Meetings ended, and it’s no coincidence that we haven’t heard much about offers from the Red Sox or Yankees.  Michael Silverman says Boston’s eventual offer to Tex will easily be a record for this ownership group.  He guesses eight years in the $145-175MM range, noting that the Red Sox do not like to have players signed beyond age 36.
  • Buster Olney says the Orioles and Nationals bidding on Tex is "nothing less than lunacy."
  • Gerry Hunsicker has signed an extension to stay with the Rays.
  • RotoAuthority takes a look at Jonathan Sanchez.
  • George King says Kenny Lofton attempted to dissuade C.C. Sabathia from signing with the Yankees.
  • Ken Davidoff says it seems that the Yankees will avoid Scott Boras this offseason.
  • Steve Serby did a Q&A with Omar Minaya, learning details of Minaya’s Winter Meetings dealings.
  • Pat Burrell says he never received a formal offer from the Phillies.  His replacement, Raul Ibanez, will receive three years and $31.5MM.

Odds and Ends: Burrell, Braves, Red Sox

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 12, 2008 at 7:53pm CDT

Links for Friday night…

  • The Reds are going to call Pat Burrell’s agent.
  • Ken Rosenthal breaks down the Braves’ options now that they’ve lost out on A.J. Burnett. Could they sign Rafael Furcal as a second baseman and move Kelly Johnson to left field?
  • The Red Sox signed five players to minor league deals, including Paul McAnulty and Billy Traber.
  • T.R. Sullivan takes a look at the market for Ben Sheets from the Rangers’ perspective.
  • Keith Law calls the Raul Ibanez signing ’absurd’ for the Phillies.
  • Orioles manager Dave Trembley thinks his team is still in the running for Mark Teixeira.
  • Dean Jones Jr. breaks down the Orioles’ Rule 5 draft selections.
  • Dave Dombrowski isn’t the only one who’d like to bring John Smoltz to Detroit. Even college basketball coach Tom Izzo likes the fit.
  • Jay Bruce also plays GM; he wants the Reds to keep their young pitching.  Bruce also revealed that Jerry Hairston Jr. is considering the Phillies and Mariners in addition to the Reds.

Reds Rumors: Baldelli, Rivera, Burrell

By Tim Dierkes | December 10, 2008 at 11:46pm CDT

11:46pm: Amusing story from Joe McDonald:

A group of Cincinnati Reds personnel, including manager Dusty Baker, were playing roulette Tuesday night. A member of the contingent yelled "Put it on No. 5 for Rocco Baldelli" and now it appears the Reds are having talks with his agent.

McDonald adds that the Red Sox have apparently stepped back with their interest in Baldelli.  Buster Olney wrote on Monday that he’d be shocked if Boston didn’t sign Baldelli.

9:24pm: According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds talked to the agents for Rocco Baldelli and Juan Rivera (the agents initiated).  Pat Burrell’s agents also want to meet. Fay says the Reds have at least $10MM to spend.

MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon adds that Moises Alou’s agent contacted Walt Jocketty, but the Reds aren’t interested.  Nor are they interested in Garrett Anderson.  Sheldon adds that there’s been "no real activity towards reviving the Jermaine Dye deal."

White Sox, Reds Still Talking Dye

By Tim Dierkes | December 10, 2008 at 1:21pm CDT

1:21pm: Danny Knobler believes the White Sox want to see whether they can move Dye for pitching before entering the free agent market.

WEDNESDAY, 12:23pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Dye-Reds discussions continue at a moderate level, but for now the Sox expect Dye to be their Opening Day right fielder.  A deal was close at one point, but Dye’s salary became an issue for the Reds.  Rosenthal specualates that the Reds could now just try to get a bargain on Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell.

TUESDAY, 10:37pm: MLB.com’s Scott Merkin says the White Sox have not talked to the Braves since the Javier Vazquez deal.  It’s been a quiet Winter Meetings for the Sox so far.

12:17pm: MetsBlog passes along a WFAN report from Sweeny Murti that the Braves are in serious discussions for Dye.

11:11am: From SI.com’s Jon Heyman:

A person familiar with the White Sox’s thinking said late Monday night, "The Jermaine Dye trades are dead … for tonight, anyway.”

Heyman says the Rays, Braves, and Reds were among ten teams to to express interest.  He adds that Homer Bailey alone would not have been enough.

Burrell Unlikely To Return To Philly

By Tim Dierkes | December 9, 2008 at 4:29pm CDT

4:29pm: ESPN’s Jayson Stark says the Phillies will not tread water to see if they get DeRosa from the Cubs.  A friend of Ibanez told Stark the Phils are his first choice, so there seems to be mutual interest.  The problem: the Cubs want Ibanez too and may not be willing to move DeRosa until they get their outfielder.

3:46pm: Pat Burrell’s agent Ed Hayes would be surprised if his client re-signs with the Phillies, as would most observers.  Todd Zolecki believes the Phils’ top three candidates to replace him in left field are Raul Ibanez, Mark DeRosa, and Juan Rivera.
