Nationals Select Andrés Machado, Transfer Víctor Robles To 60-Day IL

The Nationals announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Andrés Machado, with righty Amos Willingham optioned to Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. In order to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Machado, outfielder Víctor Robles was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Machado, 30, has been with the Nats since 2021, though he was outrighted off their roster in the offseason. He got added back at the end of April but was clobbered for 16 earned runs in 17 innings, leading to an ERA of 8.47. Having burned all his option years, he was outrighted off their roster again in June and had the right to reject that assignment since it was his second, though he decided to accept and stay in the organization.

Since returning to Rochester, he has thrown 16 1/3 innings with a 4.96 ERA, but with strong peripherals. He’s stuck out 27.9% of batters faced while walking 4.4% of them. A .349 batting average on balls in play and 56.1% strand rate may have pushed some extra runs across, as his FIP is a much more palatable 2.98. That’ll seemingly get him another shot in the Nats bullpen, which is one of the worst in the league. Their collective 5.47 ERA is almost the worst in the majors, just barely better than Oakland’s 5.49. It’s also possible that Kyle Finnegan ends up traded in the next week, since he has garnered some interest.

As for Robles, he was placed on the 10-day IL on June 21 due to back spasms in the lumbar spine, his second IL stint for that issue this year. It seems the club doesn’t expect him back soon, as he’ll now be ineligible to return until mid-August. Andrew Golden of The Washington Post relayed this week that Robles is staying in D.C. for the foreseeable future to do rehab work around the big league club.

It’s another frustrating development for the former top prospect, who has always had speed and defense to offer but generally struggled at the plate. He had hit .233/.306/.359 in his career coming into this season but seemed to show positive strides here in 2023. He has a stronger line of .299/.385/.364 this year while significantly cutting his strikeouts, but the back spasms have limited that to just 36 games.

Robles will be eligible for one more pass through arbitration this offseason, though might not be able to get much of a raise beyond this year’s $2.325MM salary based on all his missed time. He might have been a trade candidate this summer if he were healthy but that’s unfortunately not the case. Players on the IL can be traded but it’s unlikely the interest is high right now, based on his uncertain health status.

Giants To Promote Marco Luciano

The Giants are planning promote top infield prospect Marco Luciano prior to tonight’s game against the A’s, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Luciano is already on the 40-man roster, so a corresponding move will only be needed to add him to the club’s active roster.

Luciano, 21, has long been considered one of the game’s top prospects. He was a consensus top-20 prospect in the sport as recently as last year, and is currently considered a consensus top-50 prospect across most services. Scouts are enamored with Luciano’s power potential and bat speed, but have long questioned his hit tool due to an elevated strikeout rate throughout his minor league career. While Luciano’s defense previously raised questions regarding his ability to stick in the infield long-term, with many projecting a move to the outfield in his future, a strong 2023 campaign on that side of the ball has largely alleviated those concerns, indicating he should at least be able to stick at third base if not his native position of shortstop.

Luciano has struggled to stay on the field in recent years due to back troubles, missing ten weeks in 2022 due to the issue and another month this year. When healthy, however, he’s produced at the plate with a .263/.339/.549 slash line with a 121 wRC+ in 57 games at the High-A level last season and a Double-A slash line of .228/.339/.450, good for a wRC+ of 114 in 56 games this year. Luciano’s strikeout rate rose more than 7 points this season, nearly reaching 30% at Double-A, though the youngster managed to mostly make up for the additional whiffs with a massive 14.9% walk rate.

Luciano’s performance at Double-A recently earned him a promotion to the Triple-A level, where he’s slashed an excellent .292/.370/.625 that’s good for a wRC+ of 130 even in the inflated offensive environment of the Pacific Coast League. The Giants, who have struggled to a 9-11 record in July and just snapped a six-game losing streak last night, seemingly view Luciano as a potential spark who can help cover for the injured Thairo Estrada and Brandon Crawford up the middle, roles that currently fall to struggling youngsters Casey Schmitt and Brett Wisely.

Dodgers Acquire Enrique Hernandez

Enrique Hernandez is back with the Dodgers. Los Angeles announced they’ve acquired the utilityman (along with cash considerations) from the Red Sox for relievers Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman. Boston is reportedly paying down $2.5MM of the approximate $3.6MM remaining on Hernandez’s contract.

Hernandez, 31, is struggling through one of the worst seasons of his career, batting just .222/.279/.320 in 323 plate appearances. The offseason injury of Trevor Story — which required elbow surgery — prompted the Sox to move Hernandez from center field to shortstop. The results weren’t pretty, with Hernandez returning to a position he’d barely played since 2018 and posting some of the lowest defensive grades of any player at any position (-6 Defensive Runs Saved, -13 Outs Above Average in just 484 innings).

The extent to which the defensive struggles also impacted Hernandez’s mindset at the plate can’t be known, but his production hasn’t dipped to this level since the 2016 season. He’s hitting .260 against left-handed pitching — albeit with a lowly .314 OBP and .338 slugging percentage — but has been a nonfactor against right-handed pitching (.209/.266/.314).

Struggles on both sides of the ball notwithstanding, Hernandez is a career .259/.346/.465 hitter against southpaws. The Dodgers will hope that a return to the team he called home for the majority of his career can bring about a turnaround at the plate and/or on the field. Los Angeles has hit well against lefties as a team, but that’s generally been in spite of poor production from a cast of outfielders that has looked lost against southpaws.

All of David Peralta, Trayce Thompson and Jason Heyward have struggled in that regard. James Outman is getting on base at a .366 pace against lefties but not hitting for power and striking out at a 34% clip. Chris Taylor has gotten on base at a lowly .268 rate but at least hits lefties for power.

There’s no guarantee that Hernandez will improve the team’s overall production against southpaws, but he’s a low-cost roll of the dice as a bench player who’s had success in just this type of limited role before — with this very team, no less. Given that the Dodgers have been cycling through journeyman like Yonny Hernandez and Jake Marisnick on the bench, there’s some sense to seeking lower-cost stability. Hernandez figures to be a boon in the clubhouse at the very least, and any big early hits following the swap will clearly be well-received by a fanbase with which he was popular during his last tenure. There’s minimal risk in displacing Hernandez, though the Dodger faithful will surely be hoping this trade is merely a footnote among a larger slate of deadline transactions rather than a focal point of the front office’s approach to upgrading the roster.

For the Red Sox, with Story nearing a return, they’ll subtract Hernandez from their glut of middle-infield and outfield options. Jarren Duran’s emergence in center field put a serious dent in Hernandez’s role with the team — particularly with Masataka Yoshida and Alex Verdugo locked into the corners. Yu Chang is a more versatile infield defender, meanwhile, and the Sox apparently prefer to continue giving the more controllable Christian Arroyo opportunities over Hernandez — a pending free agent playing on a one-year, $10MM contract extension he signed last winter.

Per Roster Resource, the Dodgers had a $228MM payroll and $245MM luxury-tax bill prior to the trade. Tacking on roughly $1.1MM won’t put them anywhere near the third tier of luxury-tax penalization, which begins at $273MM and is the point at which teams see their top pick in the following year’s draft pushed back by 10 spots. As a third-time luxury tax offender in the midst of the first penalty bracket, the Dodgers would pay a 50% dollar-for-dollar tax on all overages. As such, Hernandez’s remaining $1.1MM actually amounts to about $1.65MM in terms of total expenditure.

In return for picking up the bulk of the tab, Boston lands a couple pitchers who add desired right-handed middle relief depth. Robertson, 25, is on the 40-man roster and has made nine big league appearances for Los Angeles this season. The rookie righty has allowed 10 runs (seven earned) over his first 10 1/3 frames. He’s fanned 13 against four walks, though, missing bats at a decent 11.4% clip. Robertson is a fastball-changeup pitcher who has averaged a little under 95 MPH on his heater in his brief MLB look.

He’s having an excellent year in Triple-A. Over 28 1/3 innings with the Dodgers’ top affiliate in Oklahoma City, the 6’6″ hurler owns a 2.54 ERA. Robertson has punched out an excellent 37.5% of batters faced at the top minor league level, where he’s also inducing grounders on half the batted balls he allows. The former seventh-round pick owns a 3.54 ERA with a 30% strikeout rate over parts of four minor league campaigns. He’ll start his Boston tenure on optional assignment to Triple-A Worcester but could be recalled to work out of the big league bullpen at any point.

Hagenman has never played in the majors. Like Robertson, he’s having a strong year in Triple-A. Through 55 innings spread over 25 appearances, the 26-year-old righty has a 2.78 ERA. He’s punching hitters out at a solid 27% clip while keeping his walks to a tidy 5% rate. The Penn State product went unselected in last year’s Rule 5 draft after posting a 6.08 ERA in Triple-A; he’d be eligible for the Rule 5 again next winter but has a good chance to earn a spot on the Sox’s 40-man roster before then after his much better second season at the top minor league level.

David Vassegh of SportsNet Los Angeles noted this afternoon the Sox and Dodgers were discussing Hernandez trades. Ken Rosenthal and Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic first reported the Dodgers were acquiring Hernandez. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reported the Red Sox would receive two upper minors relief pitchers. Chris Cotillo of MassLive first suggested Robertson and Hagenman were potentially involved in the deal. Tom Caron of NESN confirmed Hagenman’s inclusion, while Jeff Passan of ESPN first confirmed the package was Robertson and Hagenman. Speier was first to report the cash considerations.

White Sox Outright Bryan Shaw

The White Sox announced that right-hander Bryan Shaw has been outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte. That indicates he cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on the weekend. He will have the right to reject this assignment and elect free agency, though the Sox didn’t indicate whether he’s chosen to exercise that right or not.

Shaw, 35, signed a minor league deal with the club in the offseason. He was later released after not cracking the Opening Day roster but returned on a second minor league deal. He pitched 22 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level, allowing 4.03 earned runs per nine innings. He was selected to the big league roster in early July but allowed eight earned runs in 7 2/3 innings before getting designated for assignment.

That’s obviously a small sample of work and his larger track record is far more impressive. He has a 3.97 ERA in 759 career appearances, dating back to his 2011 debut. He’s struck out 20.7% of batters faced in that time, walking 9.1% of them and keeping the ball on the ground at a 49.6% clip. He was an effective big leaguer as recently as 2021 when he had an ERA of 3.49, though that figure jumped to 5.40 last year and 9.39 so far this year.

All players with more than three years of major league service time or a previous career outright have the right to reject outright assignments and elect free agency. Shaw qualifies on both accounts and could head back to the open market. It’s not yet clear whether he’s done so, but if not, he’ll head to Charlotte and try to work his way back to the big leagues. The White Sox are expected to trade some members of the pitching staff between now and next week’s deadline, which perhaps could open up another opportunity for a veteran like Shaw.

Braves Agree To Minor League Deals With Mike Morin, Kodi Whitley

The Braves recently added a couple relievers to the upper minors. Righty Mike Morin signed a minor league deal last week and has made a pair of appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett. Kodi Whitley is joining him after signing a non-roster pact on Monday, per the MLB.com transaction log.

Morin, 32, pitched in the majors every season from 2014-20. He posted a 2.90 ERA over 54 outings as a rookie for the Angels before struggling to a 6.37 ERA the next year. Morin would log parts of four seasons with the Halos before bouncing around the league. He suited up with the Twins, Mariners, Royals and Phillies before tossing four scoreless frames for the 2020 Marlins — his last MLB experience to date.

The North Carolina product had been pitching in the Mexican League early this year. A 2.89 ERA and excellent 26:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 18 2/3 innings earned him another affiliated opportunity.

Whitley, 28, logged parts of three seasons with the Cardinals. He tossed 42 2/3 innings combined from 2020-22, pitching to a 3.38 ERA despite a lofty 12.4% walk rate. Outrighted off St. Louis’ 40-man roster at the start of the offseason, he’d spent the year with their top affiliate in Memphis. The 6’3″ hurler posted a 5.19 ERA in 43 1/3 Triple-A frames and was released last week. He’ll look to pitch his way back to the big leagues with the second organization of his career.

Guardians Sign Amir Garrett To Minor League Deal

The Guardians have signed left-hander Amir Garrett to a minor league deal, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. He’s been assigned to Triple-A Columbus.

Garrett, 31, began the year with the Royals, tossing 24 1/3 innings. He allowed 3.33 earned runs per nine innings in that time, striking out 25% of the batters he faced while keeping the ball on the ground at a 47.5% clip. While those numbers are quite solid, he also walked 17.9% of opponents, more than double this year’s 8.6% league average. His 85.2% strand rate probably helped him keep that ERA down, with his 5.59 FIP and 5.08 SIERA being far less enthusiastic.

The Royals designated him for assignment a couple of weeks ago and later released him. Garrett has over five years of major league service time, meaning he would have had the right to reject an outright assignment while retaining what’s left of his $2.65MM salary. The club just skipped that formality and sent him to the open market.

He’ll now try to work his way back to the majors with the Guardians, who will likely try to help him with his control. His career has seen roughly the same split, as the southpaw has always had big strikeout numbers but also huge amounts of walks. In 322 career appearances with the Reds and Royals to this point, he’s punched out 26.4% of batters faced while walking 13.2%. His career ERA is 4.95, but he’s had wild fluctuations in that department. He got that figure as low as 2.45 in the shortened 2020 season but it shot up to 6.04 the year after.

The Guardians have a couple of lefties in their big league bullpen right now in Sam Hentges and Daniel Norris, though the latter might be more of a long-relief option. He was working as a starter in the minors before getting his contract selected yesterday, then tossed two innings last night in the club’s loss to the Royals. Tim Herrin is also on the 40-man but currently with Columbus on optional assignment.

Garrett will give them some non-roster depth to potentially call upon if he has some good results in the coming weeks, though he’ll be a free agent at season’s end whether he’s on the 40-man roster or not since he passed six years of service time with the Royals before getting cut from their roster.

Red Sox, Frank German Agree To Minor League Deal

The Red Sox are in agreement with reliever Frank German on a minor league contract, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive (Twitter link). He’d been released by the Reds two weeks ago.

German has bounced between a few organizations in 2023, now returning to the only one with which he’s appeared at the big league level. The right-hander pitched in five games for Boston last season. The Red Sox designated him for assignment during the offseason, spurring a trade to the White Sox. He landed with Cincinnati via waiver claim a couple months later before being cut loose.

The hard-throwing hurler has had a tough go in Triple-A this year. German carries an 8.55 ERA in 20 minor league frames on the season. He’s walked 15.1% of batters faced and surrendered six home runs. Cotillo notes that the Sox will send him to their complex in Florida before assigning him to a minor league affiliate.

Tough 2023 aside, there’s little harm for Boston in rolling the dice yet again. German’s fastball sat just under 98 MPH during his big league stint last year. He’s never had issues missing bats in the minors but has yet to consistently find the strike zone.

Pirates Outright Wil Crowe

The Pirates announced a few transactions before tonight’s matchup with the Padres. Pittsburgh selected the contract of infielder Alika Williams to make his MLB debut, as reported this morning. Infielder Tucupita Marcano is going directly on the 60-day injured list with ligament damage in his right knee, clearing both active and 40-man roster space. Additionally, reliever Wil Crowe was sent outright to Triple-A Indianapolis after clearing waivers.

Crowe had been designated for assignment last week. The righty had been on the shelf since April due to discomfort in his throwing shoulder. Rather than bring him back to the 40-man roster once he was healthy, the Bucs designated him for assignment. He’s gone unclaimed and will stick in the organization as a non-roster player, since he doesn’t have the service time to test free agency.

A former second-round pick who was acquired from the Nationals in the Josh Bell trade, Crowe has spent two and a half seasons in Pittsburgh. He struggled as a starter in 2021 but found a bit more success after a bullpen conversion last year. Through 76 innings, he posted a 4.38 ERA while inducing grounders on nearly half the batted balls he allowed.

Marcano, meanwhile, seems in danger of missing the rest of the season. He’ll be out until at least the middle of September. The left-handed hitter posted a .233/.276/.356 line over a career-high 220 plate appearances prior to the injury, which occurred when he awkwardly tried to avoid a tag while running the bases in last night’s win over San Diego.

Red Sox Reinstate John Schreiber

The Red Sox have activated right-hander John Schreiber from the 60-day injured list. An opening on the active roster was created by the Enrique Hernández trade. Boston’s 40-man roster is at capacity after the Sox outrighted reliever Norwith Gudiño this afternoon.

Schreiber has been out since May 16 due to a teres major strain in his throwing shoulder. The injury brought a halt to what had been an excellent start to his season. The low-slot righty has allowed only five runs (four earned) through 17 innings. He’s striking out 30% of opponents with a massive 59% ground-ball percentage.

A former waiver claim from Detroit, Schreiber had a breakout season with Boston in 2022. Through 65 innings, he worked to a 2.22 ERA with a 28.8% strikeout percentage and 56.3% grounder rate. He looked on his way to approximating that production before the shoulder issue. Schreiber figures to step back into a high-leverage role for Alex Cora, though he’s slated for his first major league start this evening against Atlanta. He’ll kick off a bullpen game for the 53-47 Red Sox.

Gudiño was called up over the weekend for the first time but didn’t make an MLB appearance. He’ll return to Triple-A Worcester, where he has a 5.54 ERA in 20 appearances on the season.

Seth Elledge Elects Free Agency

6:18pm: Elledge has elected free agency, tweets Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He had that right as a player who has been outrighted before in his career.

3:23pm: The Braves announced Tuesday that righty Seth Elledge, whom they designated for assignment on Sunday, has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Gwinnett. He’d just had his contract selected from Gwinnett a few days prior but did not appear in a Major League game.

Elledge, 27, opened the season on Atlanta’s 40-man roster but was designated for assignment in early April and bounced to the Mets and Tigers via the DFA circuit. Detroit designated him for assignment late last month, and the right-hander rejected an outright assignment after clearing waivers. He later returned to the Braves on a minor league deal.

While Elledge was hit hard with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate this season, he posted solid numbers in Detroit’s system and has been excellent in Gwinnett for the Braves: 9 2/3 innings, 1.86 ERA, 34.4% strikeout rate, 9.4% walk rate. He’s still awaiting his first big league look since posting a 4.63 ERA in 23 1/3 innings with the Cardinals from 2020-21.
