Twins Trade For Phil Nevin

Given that the Twins rank second from the bottom of the AL in home runs, they acquired a DH type with some pop: Phil Nevin. Nevin's had his ups and downs this year between the Rangers and Cubs, but he is slugging .456 in 355 ABs. Twins' DHs have been a void this season so Nevin can only help. Minnesota currently trails the White Sox by a half game for the AL wild card. Nevin's $10MM salary ranks second on his new club, though the Cubs are footing some of the bill in hopes of receiving a decent prospect   Continue Reading

Heyman: Aramis Ramirez May Become A Free Agent

It seems that SI's Jon Heyman has a different take than the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan on the Aramis Ramirez situation. As you recall, Sullivan mentioned ten days ago that the Cubs believe Ramirez won't exercise his out clause and become a free agent this winter. It seemed curious, as Ramirez could easily top three years and $33.5MM for his age 29-31 seasons on the open market. Yesterday afternoon, Heyman commented: "Aramis Ramirez is telling friends that he plans to exercise an option to opt out of his contract with the Cubs. Ramirez...is also telling people he'd love to go..   Continue Reading

Trade To Padres Likely For David Wells

As you well know, the Padres are the frontrunners to acquire David Wells by midnight tonight. The name that's been bandied about is catcher George Kottaras. Keep an eye on tonight's 7:05 contest between the Portland Beavers and the Fresno Grizzlies to see whether Kottaras starts for the Beavers. If not, he's probably the guy. He went 0 for 4 last night. According to the Boston Globe, the Dodgers could have Wells if they would step in with one of Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche, or James Loney. Here's the tricky part. Based on info from a Steve Phillips article a..   Continue Reading

Oswalt Cashes In

Given the possibility of Roy Oswalt leaving the Astros after the 2007 season, the club decided to lock him up for a very long time. Oswalt's five-year, $73MM deal averages $14.6MM annually with a complete no-trade clause. It's backloaded, of course, with salaries of $15MM in 2010 and $16MM in 2011. The concern with Oswalt is his size and workload. Last year he threw 269 innings, and it was 256 in '04. At least this year Houston should miss the playoffs and give him a bit of a break. Baseball Prospectus says Oswalt should be worth about $11.3MM in '07,..   Continue Reading

Minor Moves: Diaz, Ardoin

A couple of small deals came over the wires recently. The Rangers acquired outfielder Victor Diaz for catcher Mike Nickeas. Diaz, 24, is having big-time problems with Triple A this season (.606 OPS). It's surprising because he hit Triple A pitching pretty well as a 22 year-old. He earned 280 ABs with the big club last year and managed to slug .468. Back in the summer of '03, Diaz was sent from the Dodgers to the Mets in the Jeromy Burnitz deal. He's not known for his defense, and has been tried at 1B, 2B, 3B, C, LF, and RF..   Continue Reading

Red Sox Ask For Matt Kemp In David Wells Deal

According to both the Boston Herald and the Los Angeles Daily News, the Red Sox have asked for 21 year-old outfielder Matt Kemp in exchange for David Wells. Tony Jackson of the L.A. paper actually suggests that the Red Sox requested a package of prospects including Kemp. As in, more than just Kemp. Jackson states that the request "probably makes the deal impossible unless Boston general manager Theo Epstein reduces his asking price." That's an understatement. Six years of Matt Kemp for a month or two of David Wells? That'd be even worse than two or three months of an..   Continue Reading

Smoltz Chats With Schuerholz

One thing I forgot to mention when quoting John Smoltz a couple of days ago was his reference to Schuerholz as "the homeboy upstairs." Didn't seem newsworthy. However, there has been some minor debate within the Braves community. Was it offensive, was it part of an agenda, stuff like that. To see Smoltz and Schuerholz's take on that, check out David O'Brien's blog for the AJC. More importantly, O'Brien mentions that "the Braves are surely going to pick up the option." As I mentioned before, it's a no-brainer. The more interesting question is whether the two parties will hammer out..   Continue Reading

Red Sox May Trade David Wells

Buster Olney has the word: the Red Sox are shopping southpaw David Wells. The 43 year-old has a deserved reputation as a big game pitcher, and any contender would love to have him. Olney speculates that the Mets, Twins, D'Backs, Padres, Dodgers, Phillies, Cardinals, A's, and Reds could get involved. I suppose the White Sox, Giants, or even the Marlins could be interested as well. Did you know Florida is just two games out of the wild card? UPDATE: Padres, Dodgers, and Cards are frontrunners according to Nick Cafardo   Continue Reading

Smoltz Could Leave Braves

It seems like every couple of years, the Braves go through contract negotations with John Smoltz. He's been a Brave for all these years, it just seems inevitable that they'll work something out. However, a recent quote from Smoltz makes this offseason sound a little different: All I know is, after these last two years and with my desire to work out, I've got two or three more years, easy. I used to always be of the mind-set that if it's not here, it won't be anywhere else. But that's not the case any more. I'll pitch somewhere else. Smoltz,..   Continue Reading

Girardi On the Outs in Florida

The Marlins' front office appears to be feeding negative info to the press in an attempt to tarnish his reputation before he's ultimately fired after the season. The latest is a leak of a series of moves Girardi wanted to make. From David Hyde this morning: "For instance, back in spring training, according to two Marlins sources, here's some changes Girardi pushed for: Miguel Cabrera from third to first base; Dan Uggla not at second base but in left field; Josh Willingham at catcher, not Miguel Olivo; Alfredo Amezaga might not have made the team; and young pitchers like Ricky..   Continue Reading

Will Roger Clemens Pitch In 2007?

Deja vu all over again: it looks like we're in for another winter of Roger Clemens rumors. With a 2.50 ERA in 80 innings, his delayed debut has been a smashing success. The only problem is that the Astros have a nearly unsurmountable deficit in the playoff standings. As Buster Olney speculates in his blog today, the Red Sox will probably be willing to pay the Rocket $4MM a month to get them to the World Series in 2007. Olney figures the chances of this happening are better than 50%. Would the Yankees counter with $5MM a month and a..   Continue Reading

Friday Reading Material

Haven't done one of these in a while. It's time for some Friday Reading Material. David Pinto tries to determine whether David Ortiz has a shot at Roger Maris's single season home run mark. Why is this relevant? Maris's 61 home runs have been topped six times by the likes of Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa. It's just that Ortiz has managed to stay above any steroid controversy and the other three haven't. Speaking of which, check out SteroidList.com. I discovered this last week and it's well done. Walt Jocketty has blamed everyone but himself for the current..   Continue Reading

Olney: Waiver Trade Candidates

In case you missed it, Buster Olney posted a list of players who have passed through waivers and can be traded to any team before Thursday's deadline. Here's the list: David Wells Shawn Chacon Jae Seo Sidney Ponson Bruce Chen Jeromy Burnitz Jeff Conine Jay Payton Bobby Kielty Reggie Sanders Luis Matos Jay Gibbons Geoff Jenkins Gabe Kapler There are some truly awful players on that list. But there are also some solid guys who are there simply because they make too much money for what they've done this year. Wells and Gibbons are the two names that jump out..   Continue Reading

2007 Free Agent Market: Starting Pitchers Part 6

Time to finish off our free agent starter review. The position-based free agent posts are more of a summary of the market; I'll also do writeups of a lot of individual free agents. Paul Wilson - Wilson's two-year, $8.2MM deal signed before the 2005 season has turned out horribly for the Reds. He had his second labrum surgery in June of last year and has been unable to regain velocity. A guaranteed contract would be a bad idea, and Wilson's career may be in jeopardy   Continue Reading

Mets Could Still Add Alou

According to Jon Heyman at Sports Illustrated, some Mets officials still hope to trade for Moises Alou even with Shawn Green already in the fold. An independent source of mine has verified that given Cliff Floyd's inability to stay healthy, the Mets would still like to add Alou. Alou has spent plenty of time in his career at both outfield corner positions. He's playing right field for the Giants right now more out of necessity, as his defense can be ugly at age 40. He'll be a free agent after this season, and still mashes when he's on the field...   Continue Reading

Gil Meche Trade In The Works?

Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist and blogger John Hickey indicates that a trade could be brewing involving Mariners starter Gil Meche. Meche was scratched from his start against the Yankees tonight. Meche turns 28 in a few weeks, and he's a free agent after the season. He's been mediocre or worse this season aside from a lights out June. Meche has been awful in August, allowing 12 earned runs in 11.1 innings in three starts. Often it's said that his struggles are largely mental. The skipped start could just be a demotion for the way Meche has been pitching, similar to what..   Continue Reading

Mets Trade For Shawn Green

The Mets' much-anticipated acquisition of 33 year-old right fielder Shawn Green was completed today. As I mentioned a week ago, Green represents only a mild improvement over Endy Chavez. Still, Green has heated up over the last week (.316/.409/.526) and probably didn't cost much besides money. It's not a difference maker, but I can see why the Mets would prefer Green and his track record. The only reason I don't like the deal for New York is that they're stuck with Green and his age 34 season in 2007. I just hope that Willie Randolph can push Green aside if..   Continue Reading

2007 Free Agent Market: Starting Pitchers Part 5

Click here to view all of our previous 2007 MLB Free Agent posts. Today I'll continue my look at the free agent starting pitchers. John Thomson - Thomson turned 33 in October. Elbow soreness and a blister slowed him down in the beginning of the season, followed by shoulder problems from a mild labrum tear. He's going to take the rehab approach and hopes to start fresh in '07. Thomson made $4.75MM this year; he spent two years as a solid innings eater from 2003-04. That seems like a long time ago. Steve Trachsel - Trax will turn 36 on..   Continue Reading

Tribune: Cubs Believe Ramirez Will Stay

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune: "While the Cubs still believe Aramis Ramirez won't exercise his opt-out clause after this season and leave $22 million on the table to become a free agent, they do have a third baseman in the system with a bright future. West Tenn's Scott Moore, a 22-year-old prospect who was a first-round draft pick of Detroit in 2002, is tied for second in the Southern League with 20 home runs and ranks third with 68 RBIs. Moore, who was acquired with Roberto Novoa from Detroit in the Kyle Farnsworth trade, is at least..   Continue Reading

Minor Trades and Rumors

The Cubs unloaded Neifi Perez on the Tigers today, and it was no surprise Neifi got through waivers. What team would want to be on the hook for $2.5MM for him next year? Ditching Neifi at this point at least partially rights the wrong of signing him to an extension in the first place for Jim Hendry. The Cubs' "everything man" will be making outs atop of Detroit's lineup now. Even more impressive is that Hendry snagged a 22 year-old catching prospect, Chris Robinson, in the deal. The Mets added righty reliever Guillermo Mota today. Along with Oliver Perez, this..   Continue Reading

Vernon Wells Trade On The Horizon?

Former Blue Jays assistant GM Keith Law stirred the pot a few days ago in his blog, mentioning that: "Vernon Wells has told Blue Jays' management that he has no intention of signing a contract extension to stay in Toronto." J.P. Ricciardi responded by calling Law an idiot, and Wells himself said the conversation was fabricated. While the drama here is amusing, let's take a look at some suitors for Wells if Toronto does make a deal this winter. It's potentially a long list. Red Sox - They can afford a long-term extension for Wells, and did shop Coco Crisp..   Continue Reading

Phillies Acquire Jamie Moyer

Found via RotoWorld, FSN West is reporting that the Phillies have traded for 43 year-old southpaw Jamie Moyer. In 25 starts this year, Moyer's been just about league average. He makes about $6.5MM this year and has been a Mariner since 1996. Last year, Moyer used his no-trade rights to block trades to Houston and Atlanta at the trading deadline. The changeup artist has remained effective into his early 40s. Here and there, he's been stricken by home run problems. He's given up a lot this year while playing half his games in a ballpark that's neutral for home runs...   Continue Reading

Cardinals Acquire Preston Wilson

In a minor move this morning, the Cardinals acquired outfielder Preston Wilson. The 32 year-old had been released by the Astros. Wilson is expected to step in for Chris Duncan if the clock strikes midnight or for Jim Edmonds if this post-concussion thing persists. Wilson at least has an OK ability to hit southpaws most years, whereas Edmonds has been slipping in '06. Still, Edmonds mashed them in '05 and this year's sample is only 95 at-bats. The Astros released Wilson after his SLG plummeted to just .405 this season. He slugged .443 in Washington last year and PECOTA projected..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal: Red Sox May Make Eric Hinske Trade

According to our good friend Ken Rosenthal, Toronto 1B/3B/RF/DH Eric Hinske has cleared waivers and the Red Sox are discussing a trade. Rosenthal mentions that Hinske was pulled from the lineup tonight. Moving Hinske and his contract makes good sense given the emergence of outfielder/DH Adam Lind. Hinske, who turned 29 this month, will make $5.626MM next year to finish his contract. Hinske has declined over the years since winning the ROY in 2002 by hitting .279/.365/.481 and playing third base. This season, he's learned how to play right field and has a career high .513 SLG. As a rookie,..   Continue Reading

Available Starting Pitchers: The Horses

One very important aspect in a starting pitcher is the ability to go deep into games. Teams can avoid resorting to inferior middle relievers if the starter can consistently pitch seven innings. Only two starters this year - Brandon Webb and Roy Halladay - are averaging seven innings per start. Neither of those guys will be available this winter. Let's take a look at some starters who are available and can save bullpens. Jason Schmidt, in addition to being one of the NL's best this year, has averaged 6.83 innings per start. The 33 year-old is destined for one of..   Continue Reading

2007 Free Agent Market: Starting Pitchers Part 4

2006 League Averages for Pitchers: AL: 4.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 3.20 BB/9, 6.38 K/9, 1.14 HR/9 NL: 4.56 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 3.43 BB/9, 6.60 K/9, 1.12 HR/9 Mark Redman - The Royals inexplicably failed to trade the 32 year-old lefty this July. Redman has only posted a sub-5 ERA in one month out of the entire season (June). He's earning $4.5MM for his efforts. He'll probably end up as someone's fifth starter next year   Continue Reading

Mets Pursuing Shawn Green

According to the East Valley Tribune, the Mets are hot on the tail of Arizona right fielder Shawn Green. Jack Magruder tells us: "There are strong indications that the Diamondbacks will ask Shawn Green to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a trade to the New York Mets, although Green said after Saturday’s game no such request has been made. The Mets asked the D-Backs about Green earlier this week, after he cleared waivers, sources said Saturday. While Green can veto a trade to a team other than San Diego, Anaheim or San Francisco, a deal to the Mets would..   Continue Reading

2007 Free Agent Market: Starting Pitchers Part 3

2006 League Averages for Pitchers: AL: 4.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 3.20 BB/9, 6.38 K/9, 1.14 HR/9 NL: 4.56 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 3.43 BB/9, 6.60 K/9, 1.12 HR/9 Mark Mulder - A lost season for Mulder, who had rotator cuff surgery in September. He won't be ready for Opening Day. You can blame his batting-practice like perfomance on the injury, though was K rate is identical to last year. When you're this hittable things can get ugly in a hurry; just ask Bruce Chen. He could bounce back somewhat next year in his age 29 season, but shoulder surgery is tough..   Continue Reading

Will The Lions Post Daisuke Matsuzaka?

Will they or won't they? As he would've been in 2005, Japanese hurler Daisuke Matsuzaka could be the best starting pitcher on the market if the Seibu Lions post him. Whether they'll do it is still an open question. Seattle Times reporter Larry Stone has examined the situation carefully, and it seems like a 50/50 proposition. If the Lions do decide to post him, teams must bid just for the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka. Stone speculates that the bidding for these rights could exceed $30MM. You have to figure it would take around five years and $55 million to..   Continue Reading

2007 MLB Free Agents: Jim Edmonds

Seems time to revisit the situation of St. Louis center field stalwart Jim Edmonds. You may recall a month ago, when I remarked: "Edmonds has a $10MM option for '07 with a $3MM buyout, so the Cards really just need to decide if Edmonds is worth $7MM in his age 37 season. Baseball Prospectus says he is, even if he only gets 515 plate appearances as projected. Even on the decline Edmonds is a powerful force in the lineup. However, the Fielding Bible ranks him just 32nd out of 35 center fielders over the last three years. They say that..   Continue Reading

More On Andruw Jones and Waivers

A couple of columns shed light on the Andruw Jones situation recently. As you know, Jones was placed on waivers, claimed, and pulled back. Andruw called the whole affair "rude." According to Ken Rosenthal: "The Braves routinely put their entire roster on waivers in August, trying to mask their intentions with the two or three players they might want to trade. Thus, Jones likely has been on waivers every year of his 10-year career. And even though he reportedly was claimed by an undisclosed club, the Braves still couldn't have traded him without his permission, according to major-league sources." And..   Continue Reading

Diamondbacks Acquire Livan Hernandez

Looks like someone got some faulty info about Livan Hernandez being pulled back from waivers; Ken Rosenthal reports that the Diamondbacks have acquired the 31 year-old righty. The Nats received Double A pitchers Matt Chico and Garrett Mock. Chico has had more success with Tennessee so far. Neither pitcher is on the 40-man roster, making it easier to get the deal done. Hernandez is set to earn $8MM this season and $7MM in 2007. While his strikeout rate has remained steady from last year, his hit and home run rates have spiked. To his credit, his two August starts have..   Continue Reading

2007 Free Agent Market: Starting Pitchers Part 1

As you may or may not know, MLBTradeRumors.com is your destination for all varieties of free agent info. In fact, we've already begun (scroll down to see everything we've written on 2007 MLB free agents since February). It's time to take a look at starting pitchers (which will require several posts). I'll omit players who are highly likely to have options exercised or that I don't deem worthy of starting for any club. 2006 League Averages for Pitchers: AL: 4.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 3.20 BB/9, 6.38 K/9, 1.14 HR/9 NL: 4.56 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 3.43 BB/9, 6.60 K/9, 1.12 HR/9..   Continue Reading

Mets Come Out Ahead In Jose Reyes Signing

The Mets got a fantastic bargain Thursday in signing Jose Reyes to a four-year contract extension. New York bought out Reyes's arbitration years and his first year of free agency. They also included an option to keep him for the 2011 season at $11MM. Jon Heyman's thoughts on the deal: "I bet Jose Reyes' four-year $23.25 million contract isn't the union's favorite, and well-regarded agent Peter Greenberg sounded almost apologetic at the press conference on Thursday. Reyes almost surely would make more by going year to year, as Derek Jeter did, but that's not easy to do when you grow..   Continue Reading

Braves Scouts Attended Rangers Game Thursday

According to the Dallas Morning News Seamheads blog, two Braves scouts attended Thursday's Rangers-Angels game. Evan Grant theorizes that the Rangers may have claimed Andruw Jones to block the Angels. He also described the scouts' attendance as "unusual." Said Buster Olney today on Jones: "If they don't trade him today without getting his approval then they never will be able to. If Jones is in the lineup against the Reds this afternoon, we'll know he's staying, at least until the offseason." Andruw deemed it "rude" that the Braves are keeping him in the dark about this waiver business. But John..   Continue Reading

Red Sox Acquire Javy Lopez

As you well know, the Red Sox have picked up their 3-5 week catcher replacement in Javy Lopez. The Red Sox are sending 26 year-old outfielder Adam Stern to the Orioles in return. Multiple reports mention that the Devil Rays could claim Stern as revenge for the Red Sox illegally talking to Julio Lugo's agent. Ah, the drama. If the D-Rays try it the Red Sox can just send Stern as a player to be named later this winter. Lopez makes $8.5MM in the last year of his deal. He's another data point for not signing catchers over age 30..   Continue Reading

Which Team Was Awarded The Andruw Jones Claim?

The Braves have until Saturday afternoon to either strike a deal with the team that was awarded a claim for Andruw Jones or pull him back. Most likely, the Braves will hang on to Jones. As I learned from Steve Phillips, "all 40-man roster players must go through waivers in order to change teams even if they are in the minor leagues." The old player-to-be-named-later is an option, though that player cannot be an active Major Leaguer. We know more than one team put in a claim on Jones. Because he's in the NL, NL teams get first rights to..   Continue Reading

Andruw Jones Placed On Waivers

Rob Bradford of Massachusett's Eagle-Tribune writes that Andruw Jones has been placed on waivers by the Braves. I discovered this via Buster Olney's blog. Said Olney: "In any event, I seriously doubt Jones will be playing for anybody but the Braves, despite the fact that in the next week, he'll earn the 10-and-5 right to veto any trade. But we'll soon know if anybody has placed a claim, and whether the Braves are willing to discuss a trade." Jones makes $13.5MM next season in the last year of his contract. He'll turn 30 in the beginning of the '07 season...   Continue Reading

Red Sox Pursuing Javy Lopez

Newspapers from both Boston and Baltimore are confirming that the Red Sox have contacted the Orioles about catcher Javy Lopez. The 35 year-old Lopez has only caught twenty games this season, but he could certainly provide acceptable offense for the rest of the month until Jason Varitek comes back. The Boston Herald indicates that Lopez could clear waivers today. A source tells me that the Red Sox may part with 23 year-old southpaw starter Abe Alvarez. Alvarez is the guy who wears his hat crooked to compensate for being legally blind in one eye. He's proven quite hittable in Triple..   Continue Reading

Waiver Trade Candidate: Ryan Klesko

Let's assess Ryan Klesko's situation and background. He could be a candidate for a waiver trade this month. When he has been on the field, the 35 year-old Klesko has recently been seen in left field. Last year, he dealt with back soreness/spasms, a fever, a pinched nerve in his neck, and a strained shoulder. He got into 137 games despite all of that, but slugged just .418. The Padres planned to move him to first base and the #2 slot this year, but a cortisone shot didn't solve his shoulder problem. By April he'd decided to have surgery. Currently..   Continue Reading

Red Sox Need A Catcher

Jason Varitek needs knee surgery, and WEEI in Boston is saying he may be out 4-6 weeks. I'm sure Will Carroll will have the definitive word on this Wednesday morning. In the meantime, the Red Sox are scrambling for a catcher who can hit above the Mendoza line. They're going to have to shop for the high-salary, waiver-passing guys. Who's available? Javy Lopez is the first name that comes to mind. Lopez wants a flat-out release, but the Orioles won't do that. According to the Baltimore Sun, the team would like to pass him through waivers and cover some, but..   Continue Reading

Chicago Tribune Takes Izturis Propaganda Too Far

As you probably know, the Tribune Company owns both a Chicago newspaper and the Cubs. Sometimes, this conflict of interest gets out of hand. A perfect example would be today's analysis of the Cubs' acquisition of Cesar Izturis. Let's break down the work of the three guilty sportswriters (their writing in bold). Phil Rogers: In Izturis, the Cubs have landed themselves an excellent all-around player. Shouldn't an all-around player not be among the worst hitters in baseball? He won a Gold Glove in 2004 and began '05 as one of baseball's best hitters, collecting 75 hits through May—the first Dodger..   Continue Reading

Waiver Trade Candidate: Randy Wolf

Phillies' southpaw starter Randy Wolf makes $9MM this year in the last of a four-year deal. This makes him an ideal candidate for a waiver trade before August 31st. Wolf turns 30 this month. He made his first start since June 12, 2005 last Sunday due to Tommy John surgery. His return was also delayed a bit because of a broken hand bone from a line drive. As you would expect with a recent Tommy John guy, Wolf's control was lacking in his '06 debut. He probably won't get his walks down to below 3 per nine innings until 2007...   Continue Reading

Waiver Trade Rules

I found a helpful old Steve Phillips article explaining the whole August waiver trade thing. If you don't feel like checking that out, here's a summary: Any player can be put on waivers by his team, and the player does not need to be informed. Other teams have the chance to make a claim on the player during a 47 hour window. If the player is claimed, the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back. If the team pulls him back they can't trade him for 30 days. If his team decides not to..   Continue Reading
