Sockgate

This is another one of those "I know it's not a trade rumor, but..." type things.  Orioles play-by-play guy Gary Thorne asserted last night on the air that Curt Schilling's sock wasn't actually bloody, but was painted red for PR effect.  It sounds far-fetched, but Thorne insists he heard it from Doug Mirabelli.  Mirabelli angrily denied this.

Schilling has yet to respond to the allegation on his blog.  As an unbiased, mildly interested third party, I say it was blood.  I suppose if we really wanted to be sure they could run some tests on the sock fairly easily.  But then someone would be spending time and money to run tests on Curt Schilling's sock.  There has to be a better use of that scientist's time.

Ha... that's awesome. I wish I'd been watching when he said that. Weird rumors aside, I actually kind of like Thorne for baseball - he's not as good as he is for hockey (his Frozen Four broadcasts with Barry Melrose were spectacular), but he holds his weight. I'm surprised MASN lured him into a local job. Good catch by the O's.

As for Schilling's sock... who cares?

What a toolbox. Someone choke him to death with a bloody sock.

"What? Are you kidding me? He's [expletive] lying. A straight lie. I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood." -- 4.25.07, Doug Mirabelli

Well from what i have heard no one knows where the sock even is, yes the Hall or Fame has a pair of Curt Schillings socks but it was his socks from the World Series not the ALCS game. So since the alleged sock is no where to find and needless to say without the sock no one can run any tests. I still believe it was his blood, maybe he rubbed it in a little to make it show more but i dont buy that it was paint or colored on.

yea, as sirfreshness said, the sock in the HOF is the World Series one, the one from the ALCS ended up in the wash.

If he intended to cheat and lie about it, he keeps those socks...

If those ones bleed, the other ones did too.

That comment was stupid on many many levels.

Absolute BS. The doctor who performed the procedure came out and said it was definately bleeding. Doug said Thorne misinterpreted him... Thorne admitted he misinterpreted Mirabelli and apologized to everyone. The Red Sox issued a statement against this BS.

I think Dr. Morgan explained it the best. He essentially said given what he did to Schilling there was basically no chance that he wouldn't bleed. If you can't trust the Doc's word, whose can you trust?

My son cut the back of his foot and required 11 stitches on a much smaller foot. The wound never bled through the bandaging, so I find it strange that Schilling's did. As for quoting the doctor as saying there was no chance Schilling wouldn't bleed doesn't mean anything. I'm sure the Red Sox medical staff has a few bandages in the clubhouse somewhere.
I don't trust Schilling. He's a liar and will say anything to make himself look good. Maybe he has the sock in the same safety deposit box as Morandini's unassisted triple play ball.

I do agree with Marvel in some extent. Schilling does love grabbing headlines but this sock could be blowing it out of proportion. I think it was blood but like Sirfreshness said, maybe rubbed on to make it seem like more but it was still definietly blood.
