« Orioles Not Interested In Jose Guillen | Main | Matt Garza For Carlos Quentin? »
Hey, you can never have too much pitching right? Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times reports that Johan Santana is on the Angels' list. They're still all about Miguel Cabrera as Plan A and Miguel Tejada as Plan B, but they've inquired on Santana as well. Jon Heyman actually mentioned the Halos as a Santana suitor yesterday afternoon, but it didn't register with me.
DiGiovanna says the Twins would ask for a third baseman, center fielder, and pitcher for Santana. Brandon Wood, Reggie Willits, and Nick Adenhart - is that too much? Another hurdle might be getting Santana to approve a trade to the West Coast.
DiGiovanna adds that the Twins have interest in Gary Matthews Jr. Could this be the mystery CF the Twins are close to acquiring? Maybe not, since Matthews is expensive, old, and mediocre.

If i were the angels, i would scratch the interest in Santana. They have enough good pitching to contend for the World Series. What I would do, as was mentioned, is trade wood, willits, and kotchman to the twins for morneau. The Angels trade a lot of prospects, but wood is the only way the twins will consider the deal, willits is blocked for the angels but is a good centerfield option for the twins, and kotchman replaces morneau. If i were the angels, i would defintely in inquire about morneau, his lefty bat in between vlad and torii would provide balance and and the big bat that the angels want so much. Also, morneau would come at a cheapre cost than cabrera, as the twins would not have to give up kendrick or adenhart. This is just an idea, but worth the spotlight because it seems to make sense.

The Twins possibly can't be interested in that package for Morneau. The guy was an MVP just last year. The Angels just need to stop stalling and trade the farm for Miggy and let the Yanks get Santana.

I'd love to see it happen, if only to stick it to the Yankees. That might be a bit too much for the Angels to give up for a pitcher though, a position where they do actually have some depth.

So if the Twins trade Santana, Morneau, Nathan, and I've heard Cuddyer's name listed alot too. So if they trade them all away as well as letting Hunter walk, is there a Twins fan left out there that can stick by this team? MLB needs to step in and make the Pohlad's sell the team or contract the team once and for all. The ownership there is the biggest joke in the league

Oh the twins would be interested in that package, morneau may have been an mvp, but also can be very streaky. He is a great young talent, but if the angels inquired, it is definite the twins would listen.

Bravesbeast - I like your post. I agree that Morneau would be a better deal for the Angels, as they would likely keep Kendrick and probably Adenhart as well. He gives the Angels what they are looking for - Power at a good price.

Santana
Lackey
Escobar
Garland
Weaver
Figgins 2B
Matthews LF
Guerrero RF
Cabrera 3B
Hunter CF
Anderson DH
Kotchman 1B
Napoli C
Izturis SS
Angels trade Wood, Willits, and Santana to Twins for Santana
Angels trade Kendrick, Adenhart and Mathis for Cabrera.
If the Twins or Angels want more, you still have Joe Saunders, Kendry Morales, Chris Bootcheck, and even Juan Rivera and Dallas McPherson to toss in.
The bench still has at least two or three of those guys, Quinlan, and Aybar. Go out and sign a backup catcher and that team is ready to rock.

"If the Twins or Angels want more" Obviously I meant to type if the "Twins or Marlins want more".

Let's be very clear - Justin Morneau IS NOT Miguel Cabrera. Morneau had a great year 2 years ago. A decent year last year.
Also, Morneau will cost a bundle in salary as the Angels would need to extend him.
Finally, Morneau would be an upgrade over Kotchman. I just don't know how much.
Kotchman posted a 839 OPS. He was nicked up last year. Prior to being nicked up he peaked at 967. Last year Morneau posted an 835 OPS.
I think Morneau could consistently put up a .300 w/ 35-40 HR's over the next few years. Kotchman, meanwhile, is more like a .320 w/20-25 HR's. Doesn't seem like the kind of upgrade where we want to give up our best minor league prospect for.

I told ya guys last week there is a good possibility the Angles push for both Cabrera and Santana and just make a 1-2 year run. Artie wont sell the team without getting a ring, he;s too stuck on himself; so if he is pondering selling them now, such a push would be necessary. He was whining about payroll last year, upping it in 08 probably means he wants out and thinks the Playoff money will and his name in the record books will atleast be worth it. After 2009/2010 this team would be a joke though with everyone from Vlad to Cabrera to Lackey to Escobar having walked out the door because the team wouldn’t be able to keep them with guys like Hunter taking up most of the 100M-ish the team can spend and still make a profit.
See, Artie is a business man, Artie knows he cant bump salary without cutting his profits and if Artie does up salary, it will be for a minimal amount of time. The new owner would then be faced with losing money or letting all the cash-players walk when they are FAs ~ almost all of them will be before 2010 too so its an easy decision to make…

Yeah, but it makes perfect sense that those same twins would be all over a Kennedy/Melky for Santana swap. Remember, the guy was a cy young just last year.
