Brewers To Call Schilling
According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Brewers GM Doug Melvin will place a call to Curt Schilling's agent. Wait - I thought Schilling represented himself?
Schilling and/or his agent made contact with three teams today, and none of them were the Red Sox. He told the three teams that he still wanted to remain in Boston if possible and he still wants only a one-year deal. Any guesses as to which three teams talked to Schilling today? How about the Phillies, Mets, and Cardinals?
The Brewers could fit Schilling into the budget, if they let Cordero and Linebrink walk. Extra incentive to let the pair of relievers depart is that they're Type As. Then again, so is Schilling.

bye schilling, if you wanna play hard to get, the sox are going to play hard to want

Why the hell would the Sox not want Schilling?
Not having Schilling pitching 170+ innings hurts the team. He only wants a one-year deal, why not give it to him? It's not like he'll block any up-and-comings, the Sox's pitching prospects (Lester and Buchholz) that would pitch in the majors in 2008 are already slotted into the rotation.
I just don't understand why the Sox won't resign him. Sure, he's declined, but he's also shown he can still get it done. The Sox are a significantly weaker team if they don't have Schilling in their rotation.

If Schilling walks and the Red Sox can somehow offer arbitration without him accepting I'll be thrilled.
Thats the only way its acceptable that he isn't pitching in Boston next year. Pick number 16 is mighty nice.

I thought it was determined by Elias that Schill was a type B? If that is the case I would pass on arbitration and just sign him if they want him back. Personally I would not mind at all a rotation of Beckett, dice-k, Schill, Lester and Wake to start and since Bucholz is going to be on limited innings bring him up in early June...if everyone is healthy/effective move Wakefield to the pen until he is needed back in the rotation.

Why would Schilling go to the Cardinals? I didn't think they were contenders for next year or had a young rotation to tutor. Is this just me?

Schilling is a type A compensation free agent.

andrew, the sox got through 50% of the season without him due to his stint on the DL. we can do fine without him. He isnt worth 13 million dollars and he knows that, but he also knows he can get it because someone will be stupid enough to be like "OMGZZZ!! WE MUST HAVE HIM!!" He knows he can get it and he should, but he shouldnt get it from the sox

Schill made the Type A cutoff, check this link

My bad, I was thinking of Gagne being a type B...which is not a surprise but his type A would have made me feel better about losing Beltre. I suppose when your team just won the series you shouldn't worry about 19 year olds who just cracked A ball.

04forever, I think I speak for everybody when I say, please just shut the hell up. Nobody wants to hear anymore of your crap about Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo for Miguel Cabrera proposals. None of your posts just make any sense. Curt Schilling is ABSOLUTELY worth 13 mil on a 1 year commitment.

And now that I read my post i realize thatit doesnt make much sense either. Whatever i think u all got the idea

nrmax-
You and 04forever have some of the most salient posts on here. No in-fighting please. I hate to see my heroes go at each others' throats. :)
That said, throw Lester on the Lugo Crisp pile and I think we have a mo vaughnish situation for the sox, and a win for the marlins in the short term.

not re-signing schill for one year is a mistake
not a jd drew mistake..more like a trading for gagne mistake..but still

I am a Mets Fan, That being said. The Red Sox need to offer Schilling a great contract out of RESPECT. He will ALWAYS be associated with '04 and'07... What ever happened loyalty?

I always thought running a franchise on this type of respect was a dumb thing. I don't really care what the Sox do as they'll be fine with whatever road they take with Schilling.

Sox offering arbitration to Schilling seems the best move, if he stays, you probably win the case (teams always do), so pay less, or if he signs, you get 2 draft picks.
I think Schilling to the Brewers makes great sense for the Brew Crew, as an outside observer, they seemed to kinda fold down the stretch, and Schilling would be a great winner to bring in to stop that, and help show how a professional goes about his business to the younger players. Plus what pitcher wouldn't be better in the NL Central.

If Schilling goes to the Brewers, the Sox get a sandwich pick and the Brewers' second-round pick. Not as great.
Posted by: Andrew | November 02, 2007 at 02:43 PM
No they get the Brewers 1st round pick.
