« Yankees, Brewers, Giants, Astros, Rays After Percival | Main | Stark's Latest: Santana, Hamilton, Snell »
Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, normally their Cubs guy, has the scoop on the Torii Hunter situation.
Wittenmyer says Hunter has at least five offers in hand. Four of them are for five years, while the Rangers have offered six. This doesn't count the Twins' lowball 3/45 offer.
So which five clubs have made proposals to Hunter? The Rangers, White Sox, Dodgers, Royals, and Nationals comprise the list. Wittenmyer notes that the Dodgers could get aggressive on Hunter if they miss out on Miguel Cabrera. Also, the Yankees could trade Melky Cabrera and jump in. The amounts offered aren't well known, but Wittenmyer says the Rangers are just under $15MM per year.
Hunter hopes to decide next week so he doesn't have to attend the Winter Meetings the week after that. Don't underestimate the Royals, who blew everyone away last year by winning the bidding for Gil Meche. Still, the White Sox and Rangers are the clear frontrunners.

Somebody is going to overpay BIG for Hunter...
5yr 75 mill should be the MOST he gets...6yr 90+ would be horrible

Let's all step back for just a second now. No, no, not to pause and think about all the things to be thankful for but rather to appreciate the hilarious irony of someone named 'zito4cyyoung' saying a MLB player is going to be overpaid. I love it!

I'd argue 5 years at $75MM is far overshooting Torii Hunter's actual value.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 21, 2007 at 12:03 PM
I've said it before here many times....
YES ZITO WAS REDICULOUSLY OVERPAID!!
What's even funnier is that you can't see past a screenname. When we had Schmidt, my screenname was jason4cyyoung and if we get rid of Zito it probably will become Lincecum4cyyoung...
Maybe you should try showing some actual knowledge instead of just being a d-bag with a computer.

5/$75M would be horrible...

zito4cyyoung...clearly he hit a sore spot but it was obviously just a joke...chill out.

Hunter deserves no more than 5 years/$60 mil
Posted by: bartendermlb | November 21, 2007 at 12:12 PM
it's not about your name, its about you posting how torii hunter would be overpaid, while you are rocking a moniker dedicated to one of the most over-paid players in baseball.
it would be like "lindsaylohan4life" posting on a board how "britney spears needs to stop partying".
anyways, my thoughts on this, texas has to be the front runner..6 year offer, more money...0 in taxes paid on it. pretty screwy huh? I hope KC sneaks him into Royals blue, but if not I am sure Dayton already has begun pre-negotiations with Boras for Jones.

Hunter will be good for about 2 of these years. Decent for another one or two and awful after that ...
Just my prediction.

I hope he ends up on the South Side of Chicago, but they better not give him that sixth year. If that is the deciding factor, let Torii go to Texas. I'm not even entirely comfortable with 5 years. And zito, give him a taste of his own medicine. He's Cubs fan, he doesn't know too much. ;)

Exactly!
Let's step back from the pox of all of your houses talk here. I was just making a joke. A little humor for the for the kids because it's the holidays.
Sorry if I stepped on some toes. I love San Fran though, especially the ballpark.
TheSchmaranz, nice one, I'm so stupid I don't even realize the White Sox Hunter or no Hunter don't have a chance in hell unless they get some bullpen arms.
Was there even a winner in the Aardsma/Cotts trade? What a waste of 40-man roster guys those two are.

If you want to sign a free agent over the age of 30 (and you have to AT SOME POINT) you have to accept that you are going to have to overpay for 1-2 years as the increase in age and decrease in production meet. That fact, in and of itself, is not a reason not to sign someone.

The answer to the question lies under what type of personality Hunter has. Given that 4 teams have offered 5 years (lets assume for 75 Mil) and the rangers offered 6 years around 90 Mil there is a decision to make. Is it the extra money which will drive his decision or the desired place (team) going to drive his decision. I dont know much about what kind of Character guy he is, I only know this type of stuff about Sox guys. For example when Konerko signed his 5 year deal he took less money than the angels were offering cuz he got what he wanted from the sox. Same with Dye, he signed a 2 years 20 mil deal this year when he could have got more.
So which type of guy is Torii, the guy that has to get every available dollar and leave nothing on the table. Or the guy that wants to go where he wants to go as long as they appease his wishes. If someone knows which type of guy hunter is it might provide some insight into what team he will choose.

I don't think Hunter could turn down the 90 mil with the tax situation for a 5 year 75 mil contract in Chicago. There is a very large discrepancy there...

I wouldn't give him more than $9mil/year. He's had over 100rbi's twice and has never batted over .300 in 9 seasons. GMs need to step overpaying.
I'm really starting to become a Twins fan. I love how they don't let the players control them, they control the players.

Just to clarify - my screen ID is not... I repeat not.. an open invitation to touch my monkey. Unless of course there is a female poster in here ( law of averages says there should be some no?) - in which case it will be a case by case decision :o)
That said - my guess is going to be Texas. No particular reason just a guess

NOOOOOOOOOO! SMH...Had to know Hicks and JD would offer the 6th year when nobody else has yet...

First, I don't think trying to get the best deal for yourself and your family means you don't have any character. Second, how do we know the reason Hunter chooses Texas. He lives outside Dallas. What's wrong with wanting to play in your home town and being able to go home to your family every night. And lastly, who says the White Sox are a contender? After their third and fourth place finish the last two years, they look like they are getting old and going backwards. If I were Hunter and the deciding factor was who is ready to win, I would pick the Dodgers. But the Texas offer is hard to ignore. And in my opinion, Texas has just as much chance of winning their division as the White Sox have of winning theirs. After all, Texas did win more games than the White Sox last year.

As a die hard Red Sox fan, there are so many people that are telling me the Sox should sign him, tons are saying the opposite. I think realistically that Ellsbury would benefit from one FULL year in AAA, give him time to develop into the player we know he is going to be as opposed to inserting him as the starting CF the year following a WS win. That said, signing Hunter to a one year contract is both good for him and the Sox. If Hunter has a solid season, he'll get the same amount of years as this year, but more money. I know he didn't produce a Andruw Jones escque season, but a 1 yr $17 million contract would be good. Insert him in the 2 slot and I think the offense woud be great, and defense would be as well with the return of Lowell who WILL win the Gold Glove next year.

I assure you I'm not just saying this as a die hard Yankee fan, jondogg... but I don't think there's much chance of Hunter taking a one year deal in Boston. It seems quite clear that Tori is angling for his big pay-day this year, in other words a long term deal for 75mil or more (I'd honestly be surprised if he turned down that 90mil in Texas money).
As for my beloved Yankees landing him... I'm doubtful about that too. While I've contemplated the idea (given that Melky so regularly appears in trade rumors), I think we'll end up holding on to Cabrera at least until we hear about the Santana situation.

Further, even if we do get Santana, given what he will cost -- replacing 500K Melky with 15mil Tori (for 5+ years) would be a rather large expenditure. Then again, if A-rod can land 275mil...
