Of course, they wouldn't ship off the 21-year-old center fielder for just anyone. Erik Bedard is the target, according to Joe Strauss. In the weak NL Central (how many times have we all said that this winter?), Bedard is a potential difference-maker. He'd solidify a spotty starting rotation in St. Louis, though I suppose that's true of any team he'd end up joining.
Rasmus alone won't fetch Bedard, meaning other top prospects -- Strauss mentions Bryan Anderson and Chris Perez -- would have to be included. You can add 21-year-old lefty Jaime Garcia to the potential Orioles targers.
Strauss does note that two of the Cardinals' young sluggers, Chris Duncan and Rick Akiel, likely won't be dealt, since St. Louis is going to need their bats to go along with Albert Pujols.
Personally, I'm not sure St. Louis has enough to get it done. Their system isn't all that great -- though they could use that as a reason to empty it for Bedard and start over.

This organization needs to make up its mind on what direction it's going in.
First they say they'll acquire a front-line starter and an impact bat, and a couple months later they say they'll refine their search for a 4th-5th starter.
Either rebuild, or make one last push and start over next year. (2009 would look pretty ugly without Rasmus and Perez)

This is a nonrumor. Actually reading the article will show that Strauss doesn't think the have a chance in heck at Bedard
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | December 09, 2007 at 03:31 PM
I think this may be STL throwing his name out there to see what kind of attention he draws and nothing more.
After all the organization has made about the farm system finally beginning to show signs of life, it would make no sense to blow it up.

They are in a tough situation here because Rasmus is the only blue chip prospect in this organization. He is set to take over CF when Edmonds leaves after next year. It doesn't really make a bunch of sense to trade that away, along with others, when I believe 2009 is the only chance they have to compete. Thats when Rasmus takes over, Carp will be back and healthy, and they will be rid of Edmonds and Mulder's contracts. Trading Rasmus is not smart.

I almost would say that while the cards say they would make rasmus available, they may not want to do it it unless they had a chance at both tejada and bedard. If that were the case then the cards might consider duncan or ankiel as well, but as much as the cards have valued rasmus in the past, I still do not think that a deal will get done. I say that Bedard goes to the dodgers eventually.

The Cards would be silly not to listen to offers on Rasmus/ see what he could get but I agree at the end of the day he goes nowhere. The Cards can't afford to blow up what little farm talent they have. If the Cards made a smaller deal for Tejada and sent Rolen packing, and sent Reyes off for something useful, they will contend. Maybe they don't want to throw away one of Pujols' peak years.

It seems like the Cardinals have gone downhill since the Busch family sold them.
Posted by: HoratioAlgae | December 09, 2007 at 06:55 PM
Reyes, Rasmus and Anderson should be able to get it done.
Posted by: MaxxPower | December 09, 2007 at 09:28 PM
No it should not, the orioles could find a much better package for that one, give me a break
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 09, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Honestly, as a Cards fan, I do not want to see this happen unless we get Tejada or Bill Powell in the deal.
I think they might do something like:
Garcia
Perez
Anderson
Rasmus
Reyes
Duncan
for
Bedard
Powell/Tejada
I would only include Duncan if we had a chance at Powell. But as their #1 prospect, and at only 19, their probably aint a chance in heck they'd trade him.

"It seems like the Cardinals have gone downhill since the Busch family sold them."
Yeah, it's been a real shitty decade for Cardinals baseball.
As far as this rumor goes, it doesn't beat the proposed Reds package. It would also be retarded for the Cardinals to try and make themselves fringe contenders at best for two years, while mortgaging any senblance of a future. It would make more sense if they were on the bubble. They aren't.

If Carpenter is truly arthritic then the Cards can never counton him. I hope he comes back strong, but arthritis has downed some pretty good ball players before....namely Sandy Koufax.
Posted by: coryjwilson | December 10, 2007 at 12:59 AM
Well, Carpenter does have one thing going over Koufax. It's not the fucking 1960s.

Reyes a WS game 1 starter who is still young and years away from Arb, Rasmus the best player in the minors and Anderson a blue chip catcher most certainly would get it done.
Posted by: | December 10, 2007 at 02:46 AM
No it would not, Reyes had one good game pitching and you think that constitutes him being a top young pitcher is idiotic, Rasmus is not the best player in the minors to begin with (Jay Bruce is that), and Rasmus is not just contending against guys in the minors, players such as Matt Kemp are young and have more value as well, and the Orioles have no need for a young catcher, they just drafted one in Matt Weiters in last year's draft, who should be ready for sometime this year.
So in other words, Reyes in no way comes close to the value of other young pitchers offered to the Orioles, Rasmus is a nice centerpiece, but not the most valueable player who has been offered to the orioles, and the orioles have no real need for Anderson as they already have their catcher of the future. In terms of talent, this may be a decent offer, but in terms of value to Balty, it falls far short of being the best offer the Orioles could accept.

Reyes's minor league track record constituted him being a top young pitcher. The fact that he's flamed out under Duncan's two-seamer obsession, does not.
He's a throw-in for Cards at this point, which is sad.
Posted by: plh903 | December 10, 2007 at 07:12 AM
I can't imagine the Cards could get back equal value for what Rasmus means to them. If they traded him as the centerpiece for Bedard, what happens in two years when he either leave for FA or gets an extension that will get him 20 mil a year for at least 5 years? I just don't see it as a smart move for them, considering they have a lot of work to do in other places, especially their offense.
Posted by: | December 10, 2007 at 10:14 AM
I think that the Cardinals should keep the farm and work on preparing for the 2009 season. It would be a waste to trade Rasmus now and then after next season shop for a center fielder. I would like to see them move Rolen and then trade for Tejada. Also would love to see Livan Hernandez in Cardinal red.
