The Brewers designated Kevin Mench for assignment today to create room on the roster for Salomon Torres. They've now got ten days to trade, release, or place him on waivers. Tom Haudricourt says the Brewers tried to trade Mench at the Meetings but no one was interested.
Mench turns 30 in January. He hit .267/.305/.441 for the Brewers in 288 ABs this year, at least showing some power. He's a lefty-killer, with a .924 career OPS against them. He'd be a nice match with Shawn Green or Kenny Lofton in a platoon.

Sounds like a good match for the Cards - they can't hit lefties for crap.

there was a time when the Royals would have traded anything for this guy. he was an Allard Baird wet dream when with Texas. Don't know how much interest he would have on the open market as a FA these days. Invite to ST is about the best he can shoot for now.

If he is over 35, DON'T TELL SABEAN!!!!

I think he would be great for the Red Sox. Corner outfield. Can he play first?

Could he go back to Texas? They have an overpaid LF in Frank Catalanotto who can't hit lefties. He'd come cheap, so that platoon wouldn't be ridiculously expensive, but it would maximize the production of both players.

It's amazing how fast this guy fell in value. Somehow, I think he may be a Mitchell report candidate. He will never approach his power numbers again.

Mets anyone? Ryan Church platoon mate? The Mets could probably have a 920 RF OPS with these two guys platooning all season. I love it.

There are far too many value signings this year. While some have question marks - ie Milton Bradley - having two or three of these players at a relatively inexpensive rate can not hurt. It makes me wonder what "smart" GMs like Mark Shapiro are doing when they sign guys like David Dellucci to a three year deal.

I could see him headed out to the giants. the giants have a couple of good righty killers, and the giants have a decent farm system, enough to get Mench. I could also see mench in Chicago, with the cubs or sox. Cubs could platoon him with Pie and sox could always use a good player.

The White Sox make the most sense.

The Braves could use his right-handed power at first-base, but they won't rid themselves of Scott Thorman; even without Thorman in the picture, they'd likely be scared off by the failed Craig Wilson experiment in 2007.

as for Mench being completely worthless, or having lost all his power he did manage .314/.343/.558 with 8 HR playing regularly against lefties last season.
He'll be a valuable member of a platoon for some team, especially if he comes at a low price.

This is kinda a stupid question, but if a guy is DFA'd, what exactly is the process?
I know the team has 10 days to trade him, release him, or expose him to waivers, but what then?
Does the team that picks him up pay him league minimum?

"I totally agree, unless they can get nady on the cheap or mench is a mitchell report dood, go for it!"
Yeah of course, the X-Man comes first, big head can be the second option. I love Nady, and I think I would love him even more in limited at bats against mostly lefties :).
