« Questions For Brian Bannister? | Main | Erik Bedard Rumors »
The Pirates signed 32 year-old righty Jaret Wright today to a minor league deal. Seems crazy that Wright is 32 now, we all remember the baby-faced kid in the '97 World Series.
Wright gets $800K if he makes the Major League roster and has incentives based on relieving or starting. Obviously Wright needs to get healthy again; he missed most of '07 with shoulder woes.
Wright is the poster boy for good timing, signing a three-year, $21MM deal with the Yankees in December of '04 after Leo Mazzone coaxed 15 wins out of him in '03.

no comments? really? i know the guy's basically only had one above average year in his career, but i see this as a good move for the bucs. he's cheap, and if he can stay healthy (and, yes, we all know this won't happen) wright can provide incentive for zach duke to pitch like a big league starter.

Wright had the 15 win season in 2004, not 03. He signed with the Yankees in the winter of 04.

You know it's a slow news day when Jaret Wright gets his own post.

Has any team had an off-season as uneventful as the Pirates?
We heard alot of good things about that former Indians assistant GM who was hired as their GM a few months ago (Neal Huntington? Correct me if I'm wrong folks) and he's done absolutely nothing.

I think it's a good thing the Pirates haven't done anything. This is the first off-season in a long time they haven't made a terrible trade and/or signing.

Oh, and plenty of teams have had quiet off-seasons. Off the top of my head none of these teams have done anything.
Cleveland
Boston
Both New York teams
Orioles

*cough* Miguel Tejada *cough*
...that darn cough..Anyways, you are right. The Orioles have done nothing.

After his last shoulder surgery, Wright knew he would never get to start again. If he injures his shoulder again, his career is over. Wright said publically last season during a dugout interview that he wouldn't be starting anymore, only relieving. I don't think there's any chance he makes a start with the Pirates, so Duke is going to have to find another reason to pitch like a major leaguer.

"Cleveland

Both New York teams"
Those teams don't suck like the Pirates so keeping things status quo is not a bad thing.
"Orioles"
They have already dealt Miguel Tejada and are shopping Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts pretty hard so I wouldn't call that a lack of activity.
