« Matt Clement Signs With Cardinals | Main | Remaining Top 50 Free Agents »
Yesterday was a big day for me. It was the first day fully devoted to my new job, which is basically this website. It still hasn't fully sunk in - I quit a perfectly good, pretty cool salaried position to run my baseball blog full-time. I have a very understanding wife.
I can definitely say that I had no idea MLBTR would become my career when I started it in November of 2005. Thank you for reading and making it possible - it's a dream job for me. Hopefully it will never feel like "work."
There should now be enough time available to make improvements to the site while still keeping up with all the writing. Not sure exactly what I'll do yet but I know the usability and appearance of the site could be a lot better. If you've got ideas about ways to improve MLBTR, leave 'em in the comments! I'll be doing more surveys as well.

Congratulations, Tim. As a "webtechprenuer" myself I know how cool it is to start with that seed of an idea and bring it to life. Very cool. Keep up the awesome work here!

Hi, Tim... long time reader, less often a commenter.
A couple of suggestions for you. First off, I've noticed often your comments come close to word for word analysis from rotoworld... are you connect with them? Either way can you you make less of your entries sound like they're duplicated.
I've also noticed several of your rumors have actually drawn attention to themselves for being outstandingly ridiculous (such as Haren for Santana for Reyes). Are you willing to site sources? Even if they are under an assumed name your readers could determine which is more trustworthy.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | January 03, 2008 at 10:49 PM
PS, some people have suggested changing the white text on black, and that is a BAD idea! It's way easier on the eyes and it's just part of the look and feel of MLBTR by this point.
Just my 02 cents...;)
Posted by: ReardenTech | January 03, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Way to go man! Count me among the envious. You do such a great job with this site already, and I'm sure even better things are to come.
PS. Thanks for the link in the Towers piece!
Posted by: stoeten | January 03, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Here's my advice.
1) You've basically cornered the mlbtraderumors technique and Player analysis, and what not. This can mostly be done at your computer and scouring the net.
Basically you could just keep what you're doing there, but expand, by maybe doing more "insidey" interviews, perhaps with players, scouts, or GM's if you can get in the pressbox somehow (who knows?).
2) Graphically maybe more real in game pictures or something.

hey tim, long time reader, once in awhile commentator.
big step man. your wife should teach a course on being understanding. keep up the good work, love the site
Posted by: Tommy2Tymes | January 03, 2008 at 10:53 PM
First off, let me say I rarely miss a day without popping in to see what you've uncovered...fine job!
The biggest beef I have about the site is the white text on the black background. All speed limit signs in this fine country of ours are black type on a white background for a reason...it's the best contrast known to man & makes it easiest to read. Keep up the great work!
Posted by: Ion47 | January 03, 2008 at 10:55 PM
how about a mobile friendly version of the site with just headlines as links. Check m.ps3fanboy.com for an example.
Posted by: RedsNSox | January 03, 2008 at 11:00 PM
I don't know if this is part of needs and luxories already but maybe if it woulden't be too much work to try and post your thoughts on how every team might do next year, what signings they've made you liked, or what what trades you think the teams should make in order to improve your team? Just a word of advice you don't have to make it your main cause, it was just a suggestion that i thought could help out the site.
P.S. Do you Tim or any of the readers know of any good books i could read right now. I just finished Son Of The Mob and thought it was great. Are there any books similair that you might be able to recommend?
Posted by: kevybo1 | January 03, 2008 at 11:00 PM
congrats and best of luck to you.
Posted by: savenhl | January 03, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Tim been reading since the beginning which is when I was a Freshman in high school can't believe I have been going to this site for that long but I think it is the best baseball site you have stuff even before MLB.com has it. Keep up the good work and one thing is I keep e-mailing do yo u now anything about Cubs and Brian Roberts?
Posted by: CUBBIES2008 | January 03, 2008 at 11:02 PM
I've been visiting this site daily for awhile now but never commented when I saw the news I just wanted to say Congrats.
Plus it's cool to see this has worked out for you since I'm learning XHTML & CSS to begin my own Web adventures.
Best of luck, the navigation bar on the left is a little long you could minimize that by making large categories that'll link to other pages. Just a thought.
Posted by: GMUTrkstar | January 03, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Tim, like others here I am a long-time reader (this is my first post however).
I just wanted to congratulate you on what you've done. You certainly do have the dream-job.
As for the site, I'm a fan of the black and white style. When I see it I instantly think "quality". It has made your site unique.
The posts with insiders, like the Tampa and Baltimore guys are nice additions. I would like to see more of these.
Does your new "job" include even more goodies over at RotoAuthority?
Thanks and congrats!
Posted by: Super Joe | January 03, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Congrats Tim. i didn't know you were pulling in that kind of money from this bad boy...
Anyway, PLEASE do not change the layout to black text on a white background. It is clearly the easiest layout to read on a computer. Road signs are a different story.
Perhaps you could create multiple skins and let each reader choose for themselves?
Posted by: JerseyMetFan | January 03, 2008 at 11:03 PM
This is the only website I continuously check. It's my facebook, if you will. For the depths of my heart, I want to thank you for the work you do.
One addition to consider would be adding the Rotoworld sidebar thing, like on Viva El Birdos.
Posted by: CraveCase | January 03, 2008 at 11:04 PM
no more cubs rumors.
Posted by: cherryghost | January 03, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Tim, congrats on "taking the plunge". I just started my own baseball website and having a great time doing it.
Keep up the good work
Posted by: FmrFresnan | January 03, 2008 at 11:06 PM
Congrats dude, I've learned a lot about evaluating baseball talent from this site.
Posted by: Teetz | January 03, 2008 at 11:06 PM
Also, more Cubs rumors.
Posted by: Teetz | January 03, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Hey Tim
I've been reading for over a year now, but I've never commented before (e-mails don't count). I just wanted to congratulate you on this step. It's not often that a blog can bring enough traffic to sustain a living, and the awesome content here has obviously brought in enough readers to do so.
I have just one question though... What the hell did you tell your boss?
Posted by: dan | January 03, 2008 at 11:09 PM
I have been an "addict" of MLBTR for about a year now and from what I have gleaned from the site I could not be happier for a guy with your character to have his "dream job". cheers
Posted by: friarmike | January 03, 2008 at 11:12 PM
I would suggest community forums, this comment section thing is ok, but it'd be nice to have the ability to really discuss baseball news
Posted by: ozziethesaint | January 03, 2008 at 11:12 PM
I suggest getting something other than Typekey for posting. It's pretty bad.
By the way, typekey logged me out when I was about to post this....again.
Posted by: Teetz | January 03, 2008 at 11:19 PM
haha, I agree with Dan. What do you tell your boss. "I'm sorry sir, but I've chosen a different career as a baseball blog owner/host."
Another question, that doesn't need to be answered on an overly personal basis, but how do you get paid to do something like this?
Posted by: X-Factor | January 03, 2008 at 11:19 PM
Thanks everyone. I think it came as a surprise to my boss because I'd just bought a new house. But he'd known about the site for a long time and was always very understanding about it. Money comes in from the ads...more traffic, mo money.
TypeKey...I thought that had gotten better. No?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 03, 2008 at 11:22 PM
Congrats. I am glad to know that I will be able to check back more often and find more info.
I like the idea of skins that we could chose from. If it's one or the other, my vote is for black.
I also agree that the nav bar on the left is a little long.
Keep up the needs & luxuries, and interviews. I am anticipating the next installment of the GM profiles. I know Scheurholtz isn't a GM any more, but he could be as interesting as anybody.
Posted by: TheAngelicDoctor | January 03, 2008 at 11:22 PM
I'd keep the layout since it is a trademark style that makes the site unique.
Rotoworld has much of the same info and is sometimes faster so you'll need to find a way to beat that. More analysis helps but it might not be enough in the long run. If you could try to network and get more insider info before it comes out on paper, that would be nice.
I would say one of the biggest things you could do is have an injury report/news.
Posted by: Mark | January 03, 2008 at 11:23 PM
GREAT This is my #1 site I check all the time on and off season from school work etc... I'm like obsessed
Posted by: JasonV | January 03, 2008 at 11:25 PM
I am a RotoWorld fan and do write for them a bit...but the majority of the rumors I post come from newspaper website feeds. Similar opinions on stuff would just be coincidence...I wouldn't rip 'em off like that. They are lightning quick posting news, that's for sure.
Insider info would be great, assuming an outsider like me can build up enough sources.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 03, 2008 at 11:28 PM
I've gotta ask - what kind of "perfectly good, pretty cool salaried position" did you leave?
Posted by: stlredbirds | January 03, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Regarding the sidebar...right now I'm showing the last 15 posts (was at 30, just changed it). Does 15 seem about right?
One way to declutter it will be to move the search box to the top of the page; perhaps the mailing list and RSS buttons as well.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 03, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Follow your dream. Congrats! Btw, I like the white text on black. Easy on the eyes. Glad you took off the one advertiser a few weeks back.
Posted by: studio179 | January 03, 2008 at 11:33 PM
I've been reading this site for a long time. I love it. I'd keep the black background, it's really unique.
This is my homepage up at school, (Go Mizzou) but my family gets upset when I come home and change it on their computer.
Posted by: classic17 | January 03, 2008 at 11:36 PM
CONGRATS!!!
With all your new found free time maybe you can find a reliable player analysis, rating players based on stats.
I just want someone else to verify that Juan Pierre is as worthless as his stats show.
I love the site. Don't change a thing.
Posted by: dusto | January 03, 2008 at 11:38 PM
First off, Congrats Tim. I echo all the positive things that everyone has been saying. In addition, I'd like to thank everyone who brings something insightful to the discussion. There's been numerous occasions that I've become immersed in a heated debate.
As far as suggestions, I want to repeat the mobile suggestion. My phone has half ass internet and the site can be difficult to navigate with the long side bar links. July 31's was especially painful with the constant stream of posts. Keep up the good work!
Posted by: BrianTX | January 03, 2008 at 11:40 PM
I like the idea of having a button up top where you can invert it to white on black. 67% of readers like the current colors, but 33% is a lot of people disliking it.
Job was as the manager of the Bid Strategy Team at DoubleClick Performics. My department did search engine marketing, while my team focused on keyword bidding and client search budgets. If I had to re-enter the working world I'd try to go back.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 03, 2008 at 11:41 PM
Agreed on the need for a more mobile-friendly site...just don't have any idea where to begin. It's on the To Do list.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 03, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Just wanted to say thanks for all your work Tim. I think I speak for many when I say that we'll be sure to keep coming back, and we're excited that you'll be with us even more.
Posted by: djskilbr | January 03, 2008 at 11:56 PM
Tim,
Good luck with the site. I have no doubt it'll do well given the level of enthusiasm and reader addiction.
You may find it optimal to move beyond this standard blog template and into a more complex web architecture. You can still have the blog as the main feature. But as your site grows you'll find this Typepad format may not accommodate expansion, user management, revenue generating options, and flexibility as the web (rapidly) changes.
As far as the black & white, it it very easy to have the users change the colors to their preference. And, as stated, above, making it more mobile friendly is good too.

Congrats! It certainly seems like you take a lot of time up, which means you've got it going on...I've always disagreed with the fact that people call this a Cubs-centric site. Well, that is until you start to move up in the Cubs front office : )

Big Ups Tim!
I am have recently started a blog and I suppose deep down it can become my career, although I am not setting myself up for failure.
Posted by: Brandon Heikoop | January 04, 2008 at 12:51 AM
Tim,
Nice work (pun intended)! The one thing that I would like to see perfected would be the auto email portion of the site. When signing up for the email feature is there a way you could have it tailored to each individual? For example, I could sign up for auto-emails and request emails for TEAM: "Cardinals" and PLAYERS: "Dan Haren, Roger Clemmons, etc." That way, every time you post and add it to the email list it would automatically send it out.
Hell, as I type this Im thinking its probably already available and I just havent figured it out yet! :)
Anyway, nice job, CONGRATS!
Posted by: Cardsfanalways | January 04, 2008 at 01:05 AM
Proud of you. ;)
Posted by: MrTruman | January 04, 2008 at 01:30 AM
Hey, tim. Like a lot of people, I'm addicted to your site. I read it daily. Thank god the company I work for hasn't blocked it. I probably just jinxed myself. Congrats on the move and best of luck with it. Anyway, here are my thoughts:
1) I REALLY REALLY like the white on black.....seriously, don't change it!
2) Perhaps you can better make use of the space on the screen. I'm not sure if it's just my computer (safari browser and internet explorer) but there is a lot of gray space on either side of the aforementioned white on black space.
3) A more accessible menu. either on the left side or the top. It'd be nice to not have to scroll down half way down the page and select "Giants" to see the Giants only news.
4) content is great. Not sure what else you can add without changing the scope of the website. I'll keep thinking about it though.
5) Did I already mention - get rid of the gray space?
6) KEEP UP THE HARD WORK!!!
Posted by: ballgame | January 04, 2008 at 01:51 AM
Another long term reader (once in the morning, once in the evening) from the UK. Congratulations! I wonder how you really make enough money from this site though!?
I also like the idea of a forum attached. You might get fewer comments but there aren't any forums on the web that are great (even based in America!) in my opinion and forums can encourage a real community feel!
Posted by: Lockie | January 04, 2008 at 03:36 AM
I too wish you good luck Tim,
You probably just need to keep doing what you are doing, as long as the site is updated often, I will pretty much always visit, imagine most are the same.
Obviously if you have the time, the GM profiles, and team needs and luxaries are good segments, it would be great to see more of these, as you don't really get that all-in-one elsewhere.
Posted by: quintjs | January 04, 2008 at 03:37 AM
gratz man. been reading the sight for most of the offseason and plan on continuing. as for suggestions, you might try a sidebar comment java dealie like on dodgerdugout.com, I enjoy that, even if it's not really constructive, it's interactive and that generates hits. anyway, good luck!
Posted by: 5ToolFarmHand | January 04, 2008 at 03:57 AM
Thanks for making this commitment to MLBTradeRumors! I've been reading for the past two years or so and it's the first site I go to check for my baseball updates. Love what your doing man, good luck!
Posted by: Bronx Sluggers | January 04, 2008 at 07:25 AM
It's great to have you full-time! One suggestion I have is more of the great interviews with your "experts" like the recent series w/ Marc Topkin on the Rays. Thanks for all of the great content and I look forward to much more.
Posted by: rooker72 | January 04, 2008 at 07:33 AM
Dude, I'm just shocked that this site wasn't your full-time job already.
Good luck!
Posted by: Nick from Washington Heights | January 04, 2008 at 07:40 AM
Hey man,
Best of luck on your new adventure. Takes a lot of guts and hopefully it'll turn out great. Your site is outstanding and my first and most trusted source of MLB information on the web. As a Braves' fan, I spend a lot of time over on Dave o'Brien's AJC blog, but you usually crack stuff even before my team's beat writer. DOB's great, but this is where I always head first when I want MLB news and rumors.
Kudos and let's spread the word about MLBTraderumors.com.

Best of luck man.

I look forward to nonstop updates :-)
Will this change your position on a rotoauthority draft package?
I was sad to see you wouldn't be doing that this year, but are you atleast considering?
Posted by: Trizza | January 04, 2008 at 08:45 AM
Congrads Congrads and more congrads.
Great work, and thanks for giving me something to read while I waste time at my desk, staring at my RSS reader.

Hey Tim,
Like others I came across this website during the trade deadline this past July. And since then I have it as my homepage at work. lol. Best of luck to you.
Posted by: Braves1029 | January 04, 2008 at 08:52 AM
Congratulations on livin' the dream!
I have one proposed change for the site moving forward. It would be great if the site had an auto-refresh feature that the user could turn on or off.
I know that I would find this useful, especially during the hot stove period. Once again, congrats on your new full-time gig amigo!
Posted by: gigabutz | January 04, 2008 at 09:11 AM
Tim-
Congratulations and keep up the good (excellent) work. As an old goat, I can honestly say I fear and abhor change, so keeping the status quo is not a problem with me. Best of luck.
Posted by: SpineyNorman | January 04, 2008 at 09:13 AM
Congrats on making everyone here even more jealous. As easy as it sounds, maintaining a website/blog is a lot of work, especially a successful one.
Now that you more time, updating your needs/luxuries page would be great. Any added attention to individual teams will always increase your traffic and bring people back. (except the yank/sox boredom)
Posted by: phightins | January 04, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Congratulations Tim! It's about time!
As for ideas, how's about you stop being such an Astros hater???!11
Actually, I'm kinda wondering what happened to the reader wiki-thing. I thought that was much more interesting than a forum.
Also, I wouldn't mind seeing some more opinion pieces. You've got rumors and roto covered, but I think you should somehow cover more aspects of the game.
Posted by: jatorres | January 04, 2008 at 09:57 AM
I've been a long time reader and this is my first time posting, and I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy the work that you do on this site.
I sit at work all day, and I am constantly checking for updates!
Thanks for all of your hard work!
Oh, and I personally like the white on black. It is very easy to read.
Posted by: jk101010 | January 04, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Congrats Tim.. I often visit this site 2-3 times a day just to check on updates. The one suggestion I have for this site is more "minor" league converage. I like finding out information on the next best "hot" prospect. That's about it. This site has so much to offer, my suggestion almost seems like I'm nit pickin'. Keep up the great work Tim
Posted by: AngryTick | January 04, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Congrats. Been a reader for about 2 years. Great insight. I do have 3 suggestions:
1. Add more NL-only and AL-Only information.
2. Draft infromation that is auction ($260 salary cap) based versus snake draft only.
3. Ease up a little bit on the Cubs preference. I think it is only natural to talk highly about your favorite team. But, outside of Chicago, it is viewed a little differently.
Anyways... Great site. Keep up the good work.
Posted by: Miggida | January 04, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Tim one small tweak that I think you should try is for this "Post a comment" section every time you post it should stick out somehow... Maybe make the "Posted by: Tim Dierkes" a red color or something... That way when people are reading the comments they can find your comments easily... and Congratulations!
Posted by: DonCoburleone | January 04, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Hey, another small thought. Over at "Fark.com" when you go to the comments, it gives you the current number of posts. I know you already do that, but the unique thing is if you go back to the comments later, it will show the current number of posts with a +13 or however many posts have been added since you last viewed it, as well as a red line under the last comment you were able to view, so you know where the new ones start. You may need to sign up for an account on Fark to get a sense of it if you don't know what I'm talking about, but I enjoy it and think it's worth a look.
Posted by: TheAngelicDoctor | January 04, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Congratulations, and good luck. You run a wonderful site.
Posted by: stelter13 | January 04, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Congratulations Tim
A few suggestions or comments on previous ideas...
1. The white on black is unique, and I don't feel it is difficult to read. Different skins is one option, but it would be much easier to code a "font size" option for people having trouble reading.
2. Type key is a real pain. I like to qualify my posts, and hence they tend to be a little longer. As a Cubs fan, it has proven important to offer facts in my posts as most people are skeptic of Cubs fans.
3. I think a real relevant application would be a player comparison showing stats (major or minor league). Often I will have heard of a prospect, but must then search all over the internet to find comprehensible stats/scouting report. Being able to pull up "Brian Roberts vs. Cedeno Marshall and Marmol" would be interesting.
4. As both a real baseball and fantasy baseball enthusiast, I know that fantasy sports are a thriving industry. While I dont think comments on the game should necessarily litter the website, I think it might be a profitable spinoff.
Posted by: RandomScrub | January 04, 2008 at 11:56 AM
Kick ass! Congratulations! I'm a big fan of the site. Keep up the good work.
Posted by: kowalki | January 04, 2008 at 01:22 PM
Congratulations Tim!
Great job making your passion your living.
I think everything is great on the site but I think more fantasy information would keep me and more people engaged into the site all year long.
Maybe your top 20 rankings at each position as to not have to do a complete "guide".
Also your sleepers and busts lists would be wonderful.
Thanks again for a great site.
Posted by: lingeron | January 04, 2008 at 01:27 PM
To say I check this site regularly would be one helluva understatement. You do a great job and many such as myself wish we could do something so interesting and with such passion. I don't even know what to put in here for suggestions, because if something isn't broke, don't fix it. I don't know of any other site that compares or even comes close. Now that you have more time, I can't wait to see all of the new additions and for those of us that check this hourly, I can't wait for the updates!

I'm a long-time reader of this site. I don't post much, but I stop in here many times a day. Congratulations, Tim. You've changed this site incredibly since it began, and you've done a great job. You've made it a lot more professional, have gained respect from other websites, blogs and readers, and you've put an awesome amount of time into it. Keep it up, brother!

i read through about 2/3 of the posts so i don't know if this was mentioned or not...
top upcoming prospects...college and hgihschool...stuff about the draft and what not
also forums are good and all, but just be careful that your site doesn't turn into a joke...check out the yankee forums and you'll see what i mean

How's about a weekly Podcast? Throughout the week, you analyze your "mailbag", and at the end of the week you offer your analysis based on the current rumors, and the most asked about topics.
Then with those podcasts, you can have your readers link the site, and maybe with partnership from another website, spread the word.
Maybe one day you can do a live weekly broadcast, with guests over the phone etc. Could really branch out this way!

Congrats Tim. Add me as an envious sports fan, who actually has to work a 9-5 job. Long time reader. I enjoy a lot, and some of the rumors, I even get a kick out of. Keep up the good work
