« Brian Roberts Rumors | Main | Angelos To Nix Roberts Trade? »
When we last checked in on the C.C. Sabathia situation, Paul Hoynes spoke of a December offer for $68-72MM covering the 2009-12 seasons, plus a bonus added for '08.
Hoynes writes about the topic again today and has slightly different information. Now he says the four-year extension offer includes the 2008 season, so it would run through 2011. Sabathia is set to earn $11.25MM in '08.
That's really a three-year extension. Johan Santana received extra money for '08, a five-year extension, and a valuable 2014 option with a solid buyout. Here's what I think the Indians would need to do to sign Sabathia, at the minimum:

2009 trade: C.C. Sabathia and Kelly Shoppach to Cubs in exchange for Josh Vitters, Rich Hill, Geovany Soto, and Tyler Colvin.
See this is just me having fun.
I'm sure Shapiro will find a way to lock up Sabathia. He's one of the brightest minds in baseball. If he can't reach a fair extension with Sabathia though, he should move him. I'm not a big believer in the whole draft pick philosiphy. How can you justify saying that receiving established prospects is even close to receiving a mid to late first round pick and a sandwiche pick?

Another week, another useless Paul Hoynes piece.

Shapiro isn't saying the picks are equal to what he'd get in trade. He is saying having Sabathia on the 2008 Indians for the whole season + the picks is better than what he'd get in trade.

In the latest "ask hoynes" column, he responds to more than one question regarding his lack of foundation or facts to base his commentary on. This latest version of what Hoynes thinks may or may not happen differs only from the standpoint that what he didn't know before is no longer adequate for what he still doesn't know now. Wow, lacking information and sources of facts with column inches to fill must be hell on the guy.
Btw, the indians pundit from the Akron Beacon Journal, Patrick Mc-I'm-a-Moron dedicates nearly two column inches to pretty much the same thing Hoynes' column offered. This encompassed the entirety of the ABJ's sunday before Pitchers and Catchers Reporting date for the coming week. Indians fans, looking for inside information from the local scribes regarding the coming Indians season have a better chance of finding details from sources outside of North East Ohio!!
What say you?

Shapiro will find a way to lock up C.C. The deal proposed should get it done, as it would only be a few notches below Johan's new deal. Locking up C.C. and Carmuno would essentially assure Cleveland a competitive team for the life of those contracts.
