D'Backs Extend Josh Byrnes Through 2015

Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes doesn't have to worry about making moves with his job hanging in the balance.  Arizona extended Byrnes and President Derrick Hall through 2015 today.

My Trade Profile of Byrnes was created in April of '07.  At that point I considered him an excellent trade-maker.  Since then he's traded away Scott Hairston, Carlos Quentin, Emiliano Fruto, Alberto Callaspo, Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland, Greg Smith, Chris Carter, Aaron Cunningham, Carlos Gonzalez, and Jose Valverde.  Coming into the organization: Leo Rosales, a couple of Chris Carters (one used in the Haren deal), Billy Buckner, Dan Haren, Connor Robertson, Juan Gutierrez, Chris Burke, and Chad Qualls.  It's been a fine offseason - I loved the Buckner and Haren deals for Arizona.

Wow... that's a long extension

That is a huge extension...but one that I would have done as well. Byrnes has shown he has the ability to put together a winner with very limited resources. Glad to see both he and Hall will be there long-term.

What was up with him giving away Hairston to the Padres in the middle of the season last year? He got back Leo Rosales, is this guy a prospect? Because they gave their rival a starting LF who hit 8 HR in a months worth of games after he got traded. I know Byrnes probably thought he had so many cards at the time with Quentin, Byrnes, Upton , and CB Young establishing himself but couldnt he have waited until after the season to realize that he needed Hairston as a 4th OF. Now we have to sign Trot Nixon!?

I honestly am worried that he is taking the team in the wrong direction because if Orlando Hudson walks after this year , then he certainly made a mistake. Offensively O-Dawg is a top 10 2B and he has won 3 Gold Gloves and was an All-Star last year. Last April he was the best hitter in the NL. I think he has some great seasons coming up , hopefully starting this year. Anyways. I hope they have the money to pay Orlando and didnt give it all away to Eric Byrnes. If they dont have the cash then they screwed up. I personally would have traded Byrnes in August for a real prospect and given a contract to Orlando. I think Orlando is the type that he would play better with peace of mind. He loves baseball. They are holding a contract over his head and I think its gonna start to piss him off or make him feel dejected. If they had traded Byrnes instead of Hairston they could have had an OF this year of Quentin,CBYoung,Upton, and Hairston as the 4th and they all could have gotten 400+AB in a platoon. I think Quentin could play a decent RF. I think they still would have been able to get Haren because they had Carlos Gonzalez and Eveland and they could have traded Max Scherzer or somebody in addition. I think Quentin is like a mini Canseco and they are going to regret letting him go. I think Kenny Williams can sleep now because in his mind he can say that he got Vasquez and Quentin and the Dbacks got CBYoung. I would have ran the team differently. I know Eric Byrnes is the leader and hes scrappy like Pete Rose but did he have a career year last year? He got the contract when he was playing like an MVP and then he slumped horrendously after the contract. He lost 20pts off his BA in about 5-6 weeks and stopped homering but he kept stealing bases. I think some of those bases were garbage bases though when the DBacks had a big lead.

And when I say top 10 offensively , im not talking just the NL. He is a good gap and off gap hitter! For most of the first half of last year I was trying to figure out who was having a better season and who would be the starting 2B at the All-Star game, he or Utley. He was that good. I know alof of bloggers around the league, particularly the Mets fans are salivating over possibly getting Hudson and while im a DBacks fan it would be awesome to see Orlando at 2B for the Mets. That would be a great place for him.

I like the extension but like everyone else is saying, it's awfully long...(that's what she said)

Just b/c it's a long extension, doesn't mean you can't fire him! hahah But I love the move. Byrnes is young, sharp, and making great moves so far, so this is a nice reward.

To say he's (or worried he is) taking the team in the wrong direction is unbelievable when the team is so young, talented, and incredibly cheap. Obviously he needs to continue to make good decisions, but they are set up to contend for the next 5 years rather cheaply.

Does that make him less likely to make long-term mistakes (since he'll still be around then?), or more likely (since he has the job security anyway).

Hudson was a top ten offensive 2b last year. He becomes even more valuable when you take his defense into account

best signing of the offseason!

I think Byrnes is a very good GM, but I don't like some of his moves in the past year.

I think the Haren trade was great (though I think Haren is slightly overrated). I also thought the Valverde trade was great (Qualls is much cheaper, has a better health record, and is very effective).

I didn't like the Callaspo trade at all. I understand he had some makeup issues (he wacked his wife around, which is completely unacceptable - he should have been woodshedded by his teammates for something like that). And if they sold low on him for this reason, I guess the move is more palatable. Still, they traded a very good young hitter (who reminds me of a young Freddy Sanchez with more speed, better defense, and more versatility) for a guy who is probably a 4th starter if everything goes right. I understand pitching is at a premium these days, but Callaspo was the most proven and ready choice to replace Hudson at 2nd. I just think Byrnes sold low on him, which is never smart.

I also didn't like the Quentin trade. I understand they were stacked in the OF, but Quentin's on-base skills and very good RF defense make him a valuable player. Trading a ML-ready outfielder who has proven himself at AAA and is still dirt cheap at the bottom of his value (returning from injury coming off poor season) for an A-ball prospect doesn't seem like maximizing value. Again, selling low isn't smart.

I didn't like the Eric Byrnes extension either. Sure, he seems to have peaked as a .275/.340/.470 hitter with excellent SB skills. But that isn't exactly earth shattering for a leftfielder. And spending $10 million per season on a good-but-not-great leftfielder doesn't seem like the wisest investment for a team that had an incredible pool of young, cheap, talented outfielders (Young, Upton, Quentin, Gonzalez, and others) and a limited budget. Seems like they would have been better served letting Byrnes walk, picking up draft picks, sticking Quentin in left, and saving the money to either extend Hudson (or some of their other young players) or chase a good free agent starting pitcher after the 2008 season (Sabathia?). Realisitically, by most projections, Quentin and Byrnes are interchangeable (both play good defense and have good power, Quentin has better on-base skills, and Byrnes has more speed). Why not go with the guy that costs the league minimum instead of the $10 million guy who is turning 32?

I still think it was a deserved extension, but his recent track record is mixed. Still, he was a big winner on the most important move I discussed (Haren).

Great deal, I love Byrnes.

DBacks, whether or not Hudson resigns isn't on Byrnes at all, its on management. If they don't let him pay market, he walks. Also, not sure the Mets are still in the running given their LT deal with Castillo.

I think it's a good way to lock in a good young GM like Byrnes at below-market value for years! He's a good trader and he's VERY young. His eyes for the farm and for the trade are gonna mature. I think he's moving into his prime, actually. If he decides he wants to leave later on, you flip him to another team or just take the picks.

"I didn't like the Callaspo trade at all"

You say they sold low on him but I would seriously disagree on that. Billy Buckner is a pretty solid pitcher and is almost MLB-ready so he's a valuable asset. Because of all the issues Callaspo has had, his trade value was seriously down at this point, and since he likely wasn't going to get a chance in Arizona, it seems like a pretty solid transaction. If Johnson falters and sucks or someone goes down, Buckner could very well get a few starts in 2008.

Overall I think Byrnes has been a fantastic GM. He's built a potentially dominant team essentially using an unreal farm system. He's filled out nearly his whole lineup with young guys and used others to add veterans for the rotation (Haren, Randy Johnson). He's put this team in a fantastic position for the future, as they have some serious star potential as well as solid contributers on this team (Upton, Drew, C. Young, Jackson, Reynolds, Owings, Buckner, Petit, Pena), and their farm system still has some pretty good prospects in it. (Parker, Scherzer, Parra, Bonifacio) This team is set up quite well for 2008 as well as the future.

I think Josh Byrnes is great but I have to agree that the Hairston trade made no sense. We got virtually nothing back and gave up one of the best hitting talents we've ever had in the minors to a division rival.

I'm not saying Hairston is the second coming of Pujols, as he was much older when he was dominating the minors, but you don't give up a league-minimum wage player with strong potential to a division rival for peanuts.

I'm not totally psyched about the Eric Byrnes extension but believe Josh had little say in the decision, in fact I'm pretty sure of it.
