Odds and Ends: Hughes, Nathan, Pedro

Here's today's collection.

  • Interesting article about Phil Hughes' blog.  We should see more and more player blogs as the Internet generation reaches the Majors.
  • Jonathan Mayo's book Facing Clemens has hit shelves.  The MLB.com writer attempts to put you in the batter's box against the Rocket.
  • Nothin' doin' on the Joe Nathan talks.  I thought they'd hammer this one out to restore some Johan goodwill.  Guess not.
  • Like reading about injuries?  Take a look at Baseball Injury Report, by my friend Rick Wilton.  Especially good for fantasy junkies.
  • Pedro isn't going to approach the Mets about an extension, but he'd listen if they came to him.  The Mets want to see at least part of this season play out before considering it.

Nathan could bring in a bunch at the deadline...

Only if there are a lot of teams seriously interested. The Tigers would definately want him, but I doubt they would have the prospects to get him. Plus I'm not sure the Twins would want Nathan in the AL Central. He could maybe go to the Cubs, or Atlanta, but there really aren't a lot of times at this moment that would be interested in moving a lot for him.

The Cubs would probably offer like Ceda, Patterson and Petrick and Atlanta would probably be willing to give up Brent Lillibridge and Tommy Hanson or something. I doubt there would be enough of a need to offer something really special for him.

Don't rule the Diamondbacks out. It's a long shot but Lyon, Qualls & Pena aren't locks to be lights out closers and if Arizona is in need of a little push at the trade deadline, bringing Joe Nathan in might make sense.

Wonder if Jonathan Mayo will also attempt to put us in the bathroom stall with Rocket and McNamee...

if joe nathan is his usual self this year, he could bring in 2 top notch prospects and at least 1 lower a level prospect (that the twins are GREAT at identifying major league talent) at the deadline. a dominant closer/set up guy would interest many teams at the deadline including the yankees, red sox, cubs, diamondbacks, brewers, braves, even the mets and phillies. i thought maybe the sox would make an offer of crisp/lowrie/pitching prospect for nathan, and then make papelbon a starter. the twins do not need to resign him. they are trying to rebuild, so why pay 12 million for a closer.

Pedro won't approach the Mets. But that won't stop him from mentioning something about it to the press. Which will get to the Mets front office. So without approaching them he made them know he would like an extension.

The Twins regained goodwill by the long-term deal with Justin Morneau (and to a lesser extent, Michael Cuddyer). Which is not to say an extension to Joe Nathan's time wouldn't help.

Given where the current and future payrolls are at, the Morneau and Cuddyer signings were expected. Even with them they are around 64mil for '08 and 44mil (22 players) for '09. Far cry from Smith's "expect to maintain the low-mid 70's, maybe more" statement last fall. Sorry - no goodwill regained there. The Twins have no concept of goodwill or pr - zip.

does anyone subscribe to the Baseball Injury report?
just wondering if it's worth it.
