Who Wants Sammy?

Jon Heyman talked to Sammy Sosa's agent, who indicated that Sosa is intent on finding a near full-time offer.  Sammy hit .252/.311/.468 last year, earning $1.85MM.  Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA system sees a .256/.327/.470 line in 282 plate appearances this year, worth about $3MM.

Sosa's splits indicate he should be playing part time: .328/.410/.613 against lefties, .222/.267/.410 against righties.  Plus, who has an open full-time DH job?  Many of the 14 spots are occupied with no flexibility.  Actually Sosa in a strict platoon with Jack Cust would be interesting.

A Sammy/Cust platoon does look nice, but wouldn't Sammy make even more sense for the M's then Bonds? He could probably play better defense than Bonds, and can actually rest both Wilkerson and Ibanez.

Although Bonds is definitely the better hitter and more of a sure thing, Sosa would cost less and stands less risk of alienating the fans. Either way, I think the M's would be foolish not to sign one or the other.

is it just me, or would a yankees deal seem to work here? the yankees could use a power righty bat with all the big slugging lefties.

give him the occasional start against lefties at dh and lf, and ph the rest of the time

It's just you

I'll take a ham-and-cheese, please.

Oh,sorry, wrong kind of sammy.

Actually, I applaud MLB for clearly taking a hard line on players who are tainted by the PED mess. In the past, guys like Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds would have been snapped up. That no one wants them is a victory for integrity.

I can see Omar finally bringing Sosa to the Mets, platooning him with Church. I wanted the Mets to sign Mench as the lefty platoon, but that's a moot point...

Devlsh, are you kidding or not? I seriously can't tell.

So it's a victory that these two can't get jobs because the PEDs just made them too damn good, but there's no problem with Sheffield, Glaus, Roberts, Giambi, Cust, Gagne, and a bunch of others to be playing and making a bunch of money doing so?

Sosa's numbers are borderline, but there's no denying Bonds played well enough last year to keep playing...

Sammy Sosa would be a good idea. First, he didn't have a bad year last year. Next, Jack Cust could move to Left Field, Travis in RF and Emil Brown in CF. Then Sammy would add depth, and another good bat to the line up. Finally, what's the worst that can happen? Another cork incident? LOL!!!!!!! Well, not really but him or Bonds it would be good choice.

Jon Heyman is such a joke; why pay any attention to him at all? Once again, he's spreading disinformation about Angelos and about Roberts' trade possibilities.

This blackball theory is starting to make more and more sense. Sammy Sosa led an MLB team in home runs last year. How else do you explain him not being signed yet?

emil brown in center? not such a good idea..he can barely field in left much less center field

Have you seen Cust play OF? Nothing can be worse than that. Besides, Carlos Gonzalez will be occupying CF in Oakland this year.

Too bad his relationship with the Cubs is so bad...he'd make a great platoon partner with Fukodome in right field and a power threat off the bench. He's probably too proud to be a platoon guy anyway, but it sure would make things even more exciting on the North Side this year.

I seriously doubt the Cubs would want to take away at bats from the good fielding, good OBP Kosuke Fukudome so they can give them to the crappy fielding, crap OBP Sammy Sosa.

I could see the Mariners being interested if they wanted to get some more pop into their lineup. He could add a real power bat to their lineup against lefties, and considering that unless Sexson turns it on again, this is a pretty poor HR-hitting team, he could help.

I don't think Heyman is bad at all. He doesn't uncover as much info as Rosenthal, but he is usually correct. He provided the most info on the Dice-K situation winter and was the 1st to break the story that the sox won the posting for him.

Dunn and Sosa platoon in left.

Sign Piazza and play him at first platooning with Hatteberg.

Trade Votto for another starter.

haha idk. sounds like bakers type of team

Anyone see the orioles magazine cover they are showing on ESPN right now? Its priceless...picture of Tejada, Sammy, and Palmeiro all trying to look like they are some awesome trio. I think the writer of the article says something like "seemed like a good idea at the time" or something like that...

moebarguy: indeed the Mets would be a VERY good landing spot for Sosa.

In a perfect world, Sammy resigns with the Cubs to finally get his championship ring...heh

I can dream, right?

Anyone else find it funny he is whining about wanting a fulltime job when if anyone would want him for that would have signed him BEFORE spring training?

Oh and its hard to blackball 2 guys around 40 because they used roids? How about the fact both are annoying douches that would be taking a job from a younger player who gets paid a lot less and has 10x less bagage.

Has nothing to do with roids. Both players are victims of the numbers game. In the case of Bonds there just aren't that many contending AL teams with a need at DH. All other teams would either have to play in the OF or have no shot of contending. If you have no shot then why pay Barry?

Sosa is a similar boat but with even more question marks.

Stabbingworth,

OK, we'll take him back! He can platoon with Kosuke Fukudome. That keeps Fukudome fresh and only takes a small portion of his at-bats. Kosuke will think it's cool; it's like meeting Godzilla! Our bench would be: DeRosa, Sosa, Ward, Cedeno, Blanco.
Bring it on. Um, but no stereos in the clubhouse, and you gotta stay till the end of games...

How was Sosa in the Texas lockerroom last year anyway?

Well, I love sammy as much as the next guy, but ill take my chances with murton. A guy who can probably play about the same RF (both poor) but murton provides a better bet at this point in his career. Also hes a fan favorite and the team likes him. If hes not in Baltimore on March 25, hes going to be a big part of the cubs.

Food for thought ...The reason why Bonds , Sosa , and Clemons are probably getting the black ball when others aren't getting so much attention is they all have one thing in common , they all chased history by juicing . I'm not saying it's right or wrong , but by fans , coaches , and politicians it's easier to hate the people who tried to be selfish by taking roids to break records than it is for those who took roids to get over injuries , stay afloat in the majors , or just tried to pad their pocket . People all over the world are cutting corners , bending the rules , or breaking them to either keep the footing they have or to climb the ladder . It's apart of the everyday life whether it's illegal or not . But these guys were doing it not only to keep their footing or to climb the ladder , they were doing it to become bigger than the people who set the records which may make it seem even more selfish . Again , not saying it is right or wrong , it may just be the case . In the sports world players are dogged for not trying to play when hurt , but when they play hurt the get dogged for slacking or not playing up to potential . Roids would help to play or get better from this .I went five years without missing a day of work . Did I work while I was hurting . Yes . Did I get dogged during that time . Yes . I broke a rib and never missed a day . I was on light duty for four weeks and by the third I was dogged so I had to suck it in and work harder in pain .

Have I bended the rules to move up ? Yes . Have I broke the rules to move up ? Yes . Did I ever do anything illegal to move up ? No . I did what I did to keep my footing to where I was at and to move up . So in a way I do feel sorry for anyone who took roids whether they got caught or not as long as it was to get over injury or to keep injuries from happening . What they did is still wrong by all means , but with todays pressure no matter what field it's in , people are bending and breaking the rules to move up .

For the record I am a Cubs fan I do not like Sosa , Mcguire , Clemons , or Bonds because to me they were all about being selfish roids or not . It was always about me , me , me . Never the team .

Devish, show ANY proof Sammy took steroids. Even in '98, what he had in his locker was Creatine. Creatine is found in muscle tissue of the mammalian body, a naturally occuring substance. It is used to replace Creatine lost during the use of muscle tissue. So, when did he fail a test? Show up in the Mitchell report? In '96, he had 40 HR's on August 1, was hit by a pitch on the hand, losing the rest of the season. So, he would have broken (or come close to) Maris' record then. Show the proof. When I was 19, I weighed 145 pounds, wore a medium shirt. Five years later, I weighed 195, wore 2x shirt and had a bigger hat size. Got that way from building houses. Show some proof! This IS America, after all.....

No one blackballing Sosa! His problem is this: "Sosa is intent on finding a near full-time offer."

If Sosa would take a minor league deal at major league minimum with incentives he would most likely be in someone's camp right now. Fact is, he's nowhere near the player he used to be and is essentially a platoon DH in the AL or a pinch hitter in the NL - earning the major league minimum. Or retired.
