Janssen Injury Could Result In Trade

News comes today that Blue Jays pitcher Casey Janssen will miss the season with a torn labrum.  He was a bullpen ace last year, and was expected to move back to the rotation this year.

Robert MacLeod's above-linked article quotes Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi saying he might explore the trade market in the wake of the injury.  If we take J.P. at his word this time, which starters could be possibilities?

The Brewers have the most obvious surplus with Chris Capuano, Dave Bush, and Claudio Vargas.  Bush came up a Blue Jay before being traded to Milwaukee with Gabe Gross for Lyle Overbay.  The Cubs could spare Jason Marquis, for what it's worth.  How about free agents?  Kyle Lohse called the AL "arena baseball," leaving Jeff Weaver as the uninspiring option.  And I suppose a third stint with David Wells is possible.

No not Janssen! I haven't heard J.P talking about exploring the market. If you guys have the link could you post. If we are looking for a starter what is wrong with Litsch?

This is from the article linked in the post:

"Ricciardi, who said he might explore the trade market for another starter, was asked how much of a jolt this news is to the Jays."

I know, Jays Believer... That was my reaction too. It couldn't of happened to a nicer guy, and Janssen was very good last year.

Litsch has the fifth spot in the bag now with Janssen gone, but... What happens if one of the guys goes down in the season?

McGowan had a big increase in IP last year, and though I don't particularly buy into it... SI has him pegged as an injury candidate. And really... Burnett you don't have to peg as an injury candidate, it's a given.

The Jays do have depth beyond Litsch, I think a trade or a FA signing (slim pickings) would still be a good idea. Chacin's clearly not ready (I personally think he's done, sadly), Purcey may or may not be ready, Wolfe can be stretched to start (according to Arnsberg) but I wouldn't recommend that because the man can't get lefties out. He brutalizes right-handers though.

They also have the options of Parrish and Gosling, who have both handled themselves quite well in ST. Still, ST is ST. Towers was pretty freaking good in March last year too.

The team has enough depth to almost completely compensate for Janssen's absence, but it's the absence of others I'd be worried about.

Man, I'm down now. Casey's one of my favourite Jays, and I know it happens... But this kind of surgery does bad things to pitchers. He's young, and talented... You have to hope he beats the odds here. Man.

Hey Kyle Lohse, how about getting a job?

If the "Arena baseball" league comes calling, you'd better answer.

I heard it from tsn.ca up here in Canada..heres the link http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=231836&hubname=

How about Josh Fogg or Matt Belisle from the Reds? With their young arms looking pretty good this spring they might be open to dealing a starter.

The Brewers would be willing to trade a proven pitcher, but where could we find a good fit in return from the Jays? The Brewers are pretty much set at every position except catcher...

It does appear that the Jays could be involved in several trades before Spring Training is complete. It looks as though Reed will be shopped agresively to clear up the left field situation and a starter will definatly be on the radar.

Ideally I would like to see the Jays pursue Joe Blanton or Rich Harden from the A's. Harden would fit in great in the Jays staff being on the DL all of the time!

The Jays have two decent but not great catching prospects in Robinson Diaz and Curtis Thigpen...we have good depth at C.

"The Brewers would be willing to trade a proven pitcher, but where could we find a good fit in return from the Jays? The Brewers are pretty much set at every position except catcher..."

Perfect you can have Greg Zaun, so I don't have to look at that disgusting beard anymore!

Mr. Questions-

The Brewers at this point would take Prospects for any of the 3 guys...

Maybe if the Jays have a decent Catching Prospect.. or Left handed hitting Third base Prospect...

But Melvin said in an article on Jsonline.com that he does not expect to get anything to help the Big club this year because they are pretty much set..

Thing is Brewers are the best bet for a trade because the cost of the Pitchers are small..

Cappy- Has this season and next season of Arby years left(3.5 million Deal)

Bush- Just had his first arby year..(2.25 million)

Vargas- is a FA end of this year(3.75 million)

all cheap and 2 of them would be around for multiple years...

Bush-

The Jays actually have a lot of young catchers in the system. Arencibia and Jeroloman are far from the majors, but Thigpen and Diaz are sharing time at AAA... At least for now. It's looking like Diaz might fight his way up midseason if he keeps up what he did last year.

Both guys are decent (Diaz moreso than Thigpen, in my opinion)... And they're versatile. I've seen Diaz play 2B and 3B, and Thigpen plays 1B very well. They're pretty athletic for catchers.

I'm not sure what the Jays plans are behind the plate beyond 2008... But they're probably looking at Diaz. Personally I think Thigpen will be a trade candidate.

He hits for average, but not much power.

Like I said - Thigpen and Diaz are both AAA prospect catchers and could be used this year. One of those and something else for Capuano? I doubt the Jays want Bush back ,though that'd be interesting.

I have heard Thigpen could have a simliar hitting profile as Joe Girardi, for what that's worth. And he's MLB ready.

Yeah I saw your post Guitar Hero after I wrote mine...so I will check out those guys..

The Brewers have had Catching prospects in the minors that have shown promise one year then nothing the next... and then our number 5 ranked Prospect who is a Catcher Angle Salome gets a 50 game suspension for testign postive for a banned substance...

So yeah I think if there is any weakness with the Brewers right now its Catching...and possibly a young kid that could be a bullpen arm next year...since a lot of the Brewers Bull Pen arms this year have one year contracts...

Personally would love to keep Cappy and Bush...and get rid of Vargas..

I think Cappy and Bush struggled because of Estrada as the catcher more than anything else..

I mean 4 of the Brewers pitchers had their worst years of their careers with estrada at catcher last year..and reports said that Estrada would not help the pitchers with studying the batters and Competition.. and that he was a terrible game manager..

But then I am also a guy that likes pitchers that have good "stuff" and Cappuano does not..have good stuff he has to be perfect on controll otherwise he will get hit hard..

Bush I love his Curveball and has an all right Fast ball..

Any chance this makes them more likely to do a Jorge Sosa for Reed Johnson swap? Sosa could either help in the rotation or the bullpen and Johnson seems like a good canidate to help the Mets OF situation.

Hope the surgery doesn't screw up Janssen. I don't like any of the possible pitchers mentioned in the main article. Anyone see Reed, Shannon or prospects traded to Oakland for Street or Blanton? It would help us fill in the back-up or 5th pitcher role and it would make Burnett's departure (if he leaves) easier.

Jorge Sosa ??? hahaha for Johnson, yah right ...

I'd have to say Capuano would be pretty good to have in the rotation. It sure would be nice to have a lefty in the rotation this year.

Im sure Purcey will be ready to take over for Burnett when he breaks another nail or suffers from split ends and needs some time off.

But relying we do need depth and Wolf and Purcey is not enough. Capuano would be decent.

I really don't think you want to pay Beane for Blanton.

Im sure he'd want Travis Snider and some other high talent at the very least for either Street or Blanton.

If the Jays were in contention this year then yah, maybe, but to be honest we are not.

Hope the surgery doesn't screw up Janssen. I don't like any of the possible pitchers mentioned in the main article. Anyone see Reed, Shannon or prospects traded to Oakland for Harden or Blanton? like carolina03 said, the reds have a surplus of pitchers competing for the last couple rotation spots that could easily provide league average production. They are in desperate need of a decent catching prospect that could possibly step in this year with ross' back troubles (there only good catching prospect was drafted last year out of hs)...i really don't wanna see paul bako make the team. Get something done Wayne!

BaseBallz:

I don't think Blanton or Harden is worth that much. You guys traded Haren for 5 prospects, 1 of which is a high talented prospect. I'm sure the Jays could make a deal similar to that. Also Haren posted better numbers so if we were to trade, the package shouldn't be as costly as the one made for Haren

Cliff Lee anyone? You can have him for nothing more than minor-league guys... Possibly one of those Catchers and a Arm somewhere in the low minors I imagine.

How about Matt Morris and Jason Bay (Riccardi's coveted Canadian) for Rios and a AA guy?

Anyone the jays get will likely be very cheap and be an extreme ground ball pitcher. I would look for something simple and easy first like why not someone who was just released. Ramirez, the jays just need a body in AAA that can come up in case of injury.

Baseballz, where do I start. First, you laugh at the prospect of Jorge Sosa for Reed Johnson, as if Reed Johnson is an allstar.
He doesnt have a job and is coming off a crappy year, Sosa is a versatile arm, nothing special, but he can atleast get some spot starts and eat some long relief innings. What more would you expect for 4th outfielder who they clearly want to move?

Then you talk about the fact that the Jays arent contenders. Why? The best pitching staff in the division (even with this injury), with a high upside lineup capable of beating teams to death offensively is not enough to even have a chance of competing? As an outsider with no horse in the AL East race I think this could be the year the Jays make a serious run at the division again.

We all know the questionmarks with the Yankees in their rotation, along with some older guys in the lineup arent a sure thing. In most divisions, they are easily the best team, even if Giambi didnt perform, Matsui goes down, and only one of the kids has a solid year in the rotation, but not the AL East.

The Redsox are not without questionmarks of their own, either. With Schilling going down, and now Beckett possibly missing some time, that rotation has some scary spots. You dont know what Lester/Buchholz will give you, and will Dice K's final numbers match his sick stuff this year? Can Manny stay healthy? Do Ortiz's injuries bother him again in 2008? Can Ellsbury live up to the hype after providing bih showings last year? Can Mike Lowell justify that contract?

I am not in anyway saying that the Jays are the favorite, and I know I listed all the downsides of the 2008 seasons for NY and Boston, but those are all legit questions and if the Jays stay healthy, they are a very potent team, in every aspect. Wells should be closer to his 06 season then his 07, Rios looks to be blossoming into an elite player, they have an awesome pitching staff, this could be the year they make a run. I wouldnt be surprised if the Jays rent a player at the deadline to try to push them over the top this year. That should be a good race.

anyone see us trading stewart or johnson to the rays for one of their pitching prospects?
they need an outfielder to make up for baldelli injured and gomes suspended
