« Could Tigers Trade For An Atlanta Reliever? | Main | White Sox Waive Uribe »

Shapiro, Minaya Met Yesterday

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that phone buddies Mark Shapiro and Omar Minaya met in person yesterday evening.  Any chance the Indians and Mets could match up for a trade?

We know the Mets may be looking to move Jorge Sosa and/or Scott SchoeneweisThe Indians are currently trying to decide whether to give their last bullpen spot to Tom Mastny, Jorge Julio, or Scott Elarton; not sure if either Met pitcher would help.

The Mets are known to be looking for outfield assistance.  The Indians have two out of options outfielders: Shin-Soo Choo and Franklin Gutierrez.  Choo is recovering from Tommy John surgery and may have to join the South Korean army.  Gutierrez is the frontrunner to start in right field.  Theoretically the Tribe could part with half of their left field platoon - David Dellucci or Jason Michaels.  Dellucci is shaking off a sore forearm currently.

The Mets could also use another starter; Cliff Lee or Jeremy Sowers might be available.

"may have to join the South Korean army"

haha that made my night. i can't bear to watch any more of my disappointing dukies.

if i'm shapiro, i stay where i am. it's good to have lots of options, particularly pitchers, and i doubt anything the mets could offer would be a significant improvement over what the indians already have. it seems like the mets like a lot of the indians' pieces, but they don't really have anything desirable in return, at least among the options that have been mentioned. sosa or schoeneweis? yuck.

Delucci's not really a fit; the Mets need a righty bat.
The guys who might fit the Mets needs would be Gutierrez, Michaels, Ben Francisco, or maybe Andy Marte.

What about Justin Huber to fil out the Met bench? 1B/ corner OF type, definitely can hit, out of options and buried on the Royals roster. AND he was originally signed out of Australia when Omar was running International scouting for the Mets.

Dellucci and Lee for absolutely anything = best trade in Indians history.

Knowing Minaya, I'm sure he at least asked about Lee. He's liked him ever since his Montreal Days.

But an interesting target to me would be Casey Blake. He's right handed, has played RF and 1B in the past, I can't imagine LF would be too much of a challange, and he's in a contract year so Cleveland might consider moving him. Not sure how much he'd cost, if he's even available, probably more then the Mets are willing to part with, but I'd at least inquire about him.

That also makes sense for the Tribe because Marte (3B) is out of options.

Marte to the Mets as a super-sub util guy makes sense. It would probable only cost them Sosa & $

But Inge for Sosa & Scho makes more sense to me.

I don't think the Tigers are desperate to trade Inge for two bad pitchers.

I do, they get rid of a crappy player and his crappy contract. Enough said. Not that I want anything to do with Inge on the Mets anyway. Blake, Marte, Sosa, Nady, Murton, Byrd, Huber, Piazza, so many guys could fill this void. I will take any of them, but would prefer the cheapest guy, because the system is already bare and whichever one of these guys that is acquired will only have a job part time.
How about Melvin Mora?

But seriously, people have to stop pretending, or actually thinking that there is any team that wants Inge or Crede bad enough to give up something even remotely valuable for them. The chances are extremely high that there is no team willing to do so. These guys are in the bottom tier of 3B as it is. Inge's contract and Crede's health only make matters worse. You will not be getting value out of either one of those guys any time soon in a trade.

Interesting idea, but Cleveland want to make the playoffs and can't yet rely on Marte at third. If Marte wins the starting position, then you might see Blake moved.

Same thing with David Delucci. Cleveland is going to see how Shin-Soo Choo is progressing before moving Delucci.

I have some thoughts on moving Michaels.

thatteamfromcle:

About Blake/Marte...it's not like Blake is a superstar. Even though he's unproven, I guarantee Marte can do anything Blake can do. At third base, anyway. Plus, Shapiro has to like the idea of getting rid of that ridiculous contract Blake has this year.

About Dellucci...honestly, I wouldn't be so sure that they're waiting to see how Choo is doing. Fransisco is ready (and better than Michaels and Dellucci combined). Plus, Michaels is every bit as "good" against righties as Dellucci is. Dellucci is 100% worthless to the Tribe.

Krambo42-

I am not a Marte hater. I think that he has upside, and I hope he gets his shot in Cleveland. But he has disaster potential. Cliff Lee gives up 6 runs the other day and feels good about his outing. Why? Because the 6 runs were largely the result of a Marte meltdown at third. Marte has played terrible defense this spring, Jim Thome at third bad. A team that hopes to make the playoffs can't risk making him a starter at this point.

The biggest reason that you don't move both Delucci and Michaels is Franklin Gutierrez. Gutierrez hit .232 against righties last year. Trading both players could lead to a shortage in the outfield. Like Marte, I like Gutierrez and think that he will improve. But again, a team that hopes for the playoffs doesn't take these types of risks.

Plus, Delucci is not 100% worthless. He is coming off an injury but has great career numbers against righties.

Maybe it's the inevitable trade of Ryan Garko and the Indians are going to commit to playing Shoppach everyday at catcher while moving V-Mart to 1B.

Don't forget that if they trade Casey Blake, they can still play Jamey Carroll everyday at 3B until Marte is ready.

While not having the power of Blake (albeit, Blake isn't really a power threat), he walks a lot, has some speed and the team still has plenty of power threats around him.

Garko would be nice, but that requires him learning to play the Corner OF and I'm not sure how patient the Mets are going to be there.

In his career, Dellucci has hit .269/.355/.464 against RHP. Hardly what I'd call "great".

Plus, he's getting old and he's coming off an injury.

Think Marte would be better at 1B than 3B? I'm sure LF/RF would be easier as well, and let him worry less about D and more about hitting. The Mets could use a R bat to fill those slots and he'd probably be cheap: Scho and a B or C prospect?

I'd be surprised if the Mets moved Sosa unless they got Cliff Lee back. Without El Duque, Pelfry's 5 with Sosa & Armas as the only depth.

There isn't "an inevitable" Ryan Garko trade on the horizon. Nice wishful thinking Mets fans.

The Indians need to focus on getting Ben Francisco into the lineup and that would mean moving Jason Michaels more than likely.

I'm not sure if anyone in the Mets pen interests me outside of Heilman but we all know he isn't being traded.

I guess if I had to choose out of Schoenweis and Sosa I would go for the lefty seeing that Aaron Fultz is horrible and we need another guy to go along with Raffy Perez.

“Interesting idea, but Cleveland want to make the playoffs and can't yet rely on Marte at third. If Marte wins the starting position, then you might see Blake moved.”

Nah, if Marte happens to be at 3B, Blake will be his back-up/back-up RF/Back-up 1B. Blake isnt going anywhere, and Indians fans can attest to something iffy going on between him and Wedge/Shapiro which kind of gets into that creepy love-fest range to observers.

If the Indians and Mets are talking trade, then it probably centers on Marte or Lee though. Marte is a wasted roster spot to the Indians really, they don’t want to lose him but they don’t know what to do with him either. The Mets getting him and playing him as a back-up 3B/1B/LF would probably work well as long as they can carry him on the 25-man.

The Tribe also has way too many pitchers, and Lee is the odd-man out. Although he has pitched well enough this spring, I imagine Shaps is trying to use that a trade leverage instead of going with him in the 5th spot (if possible). The Indians really want him gone, if not for his question on the mound, but because of his attitude last year when he struggled and the constant problems with Victor Martinez. For whatever reason, those two hate eachother ~ and it creates a bit of a problem when you pitcher hates his catcher… Since V-Mart isnt going anywhere, well…

The only thing is, the Indians will almost certainly not want Sosa/Schoeneweis ~ well, unless its in a package where they take them but get something better because of it.

I think a lot of you guys are forgetting just how bad Marte has been the last couple of years. He's played his way completely out of the picture for the Indians.

Krambo's pretty much got it right. I'd think that any team willing to pay most of Cliff Lee's salary could basically just have him. Cleveland's essentially committed to giving him first shot at the 5th rotation spot just because he makes $4m. I've always liked him, but if he can't get his effectiveness back that makes him worse than useless because he's blocking better talent.
