Cardinals Eyeing College Pitcher With 13th Pick

The Cardinals have the 13th pick in the June draft.  The team's VP of scouting and player development, Jeff Luhnow, says "there's a real possibility that we go college pitcher."  MLB.com's Matthew Leach admits that Aaron Crow will probably be gone.  Ditto Brian MatuszChristian Friedrich or Shooter Hunt remain possibilities.

Leach also suggests the Cardinals could take one of the many first baseman and move him to the outfield (Yonder Alonso, for example).  Baseball America's May 16th mock draft projects the Cards will take Zach Collier, a high school outfielder.

I thought this would be what the birds would aim for. They don't have much depth down there other than Rasmus and Garcia (Who just made his big league debut).

I could see them picking Scheppers at 13, where he should be able to get picked up with his injury.

The Cards should focus on adding depth to that bare system.

Sorry I meant to say Perez who just won in his big league debut.

Garcia could be in St Louis soon too.

Fortunatly you are sadly mistaken about the status of the Cardinals farm system. Garcia is a starting pitcher in Memphis. Chris Perez just made his fireballing debut with the big club. Jason Motte is now closing games in Memphis with his 98mph fastball, 20.2 IP, and 34 K's to 7 BB. Bryan Anderson is catching with an offensive line of .277 .333 .404 at 21 years old. Oh yeah and Joe Mather and Nick Stavinoha are both having monster years down there. They have also supplied us this year with Kyle McClellan, Mike Parisi, and Chris Perez. Did I mention Mitch Boggs is having a good year also with a whip of 1.11. That's just in Memphis. There are others further down in the system but the list I just rattled off are all servicable league average or better players right now. I could also be wrong on this but I don't believe so, Baseball America has the system ranked 9th bestin baseball. Check it out you will be surprised.

I don't think taking another college pitcher would be a good idea. That is the going trend it seems like for the Cards(although Luhnow proved it wrong yesterday in a chat on the Post-Dispatch's website naming all the high schoolers taken, though none other than Rasmus have much potential).

To me, Tim Melville is the pick(if still there). Local kid who has a lot of upside and might not take as long to develop.
