Edmonds Released By Padres

FRIDAY: The speculation was accurate; Edmonds will be released today.

THURSDAY: Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune reads between the lines and believes Jim Edmonds' time is up with the Padres.  The 37 year-old center fielder is hitting just .180/.267/.236 in 102 plate appearances.  His defense isn't passing muster, either.

Sullivan figures Edmonds will be released soon, or perhaps the Padres will buy him some time with a DL stint.  They'd have to swallow $4.75MM to sever ties.  Cutting veteran dead weight seems in vogue this year.

I think it's about time for edmonds. He looks just totally lost up there. The padres need to find someone real quick.

It is about time to get rid of him, but I don't know who in gods name we could get that would be reasonably priced. Coco is just going to cost too much in terms of money and prospects for this team. Besides if we are going to rebuild it should be with young guys with years of team control left.

That leaves the question of are the padres are going to rebuild, and if so who else is going to be leaving town. Personally i think getting rid of him works for the best, as we could do much better with someone else playing the field. Hariston scares me in CF, but honestly we were better off with him there.

The only two CF decent CF prospects in our system are at or below AA. SO unless they think that Hunter could handle that kind of jump we are going to have look for outside help, and like i said before I don't like the options out there, mainly cause they are going to be over priced.

SD should be trading for Willits. Cheap, can hit leadoff, and do a great job patroling center in Petco. Angels won't need anything substantial in return - maybe lower level decent ceiling prospects.

The Padres are 11.0 games back of Arizona right now. Yes, it's only May, but that's an incredible deficit to over come, regardless of the time of year. If the rest of the NL West plays .500 baseball for the rest of the season, the Padres still finish last in the division. I don't think it's time for a fire sale, but it's certainly time to examine the organization closely and figure out a plan for the future. They can do that by first cutting dead weight -- and let's face it, Edmonds is at the end of a very good career -- and trying to make the most out of what's left of the 2008 season.

Bjsguess I believe the info regarding a trade with the Angels to be that they wanted Imman or LeBlanc in any deal for Willits. Thats a pretty high price to pay.

Regardless how far back they are, SOMEBODY's gotta play CF.

So Joe, response to your Steve Phillips commentary was so negative you just deleted it? Cool.

If that is the price then I agree - it's too steep. I just think that if they put their heads together the two teams can find a reasonable match.

The nice thing about trading with the Angels is that they would typically be looking for minor league talent. Being able to trade just minor league talent allows the Padres to be competitive next year after doing some retooling this year.

Yeah, but what do the padres really have in the minors, that they could give up which would intrigue the Angels. Pitching is something that SD has some depth in the minor leagues, but I know they would rather not trade Inman, Leblanc or Miller, thus removing the top tier pitching talent from the equation.

On the other hand the article made note that they would simply call up Greut from AAA Portland to fill the gap, since he is hitting well right now. But we all know that would simply be a short term solution at best. Which would mean they would either have to trade for a center fielder or simply promote one of Macias (AA) or Hunter(A), but like i said before thats a hell of a jump. Plus Hunter is only 19 so I would believe it would hurt is development. But something has to be done.

I would say that Gary Matthews is a good fit. He's a solid hitter, a plus defender, and the Angels would certainly eat a good part of his contract.

Ryan Freel is another option since he isn't getting full playing time in Cincy. Matthews has a better power bat, but Freel has more speed, consistency, and versitility.

How about an NBA style trade?

SD doesn't want to increase budget too much I imagine, so how about the Giants trade Randy Winn for Edmonds, and then just release Edmonds....

SD gets a switch-hitting CF (OK defensively, not great, but reliable) with no known health issues, who can bat more or less anywhere in the lineup and the Giants get an opportunity to see its young guys in RF regularly - Bowker, Schierholtz and to a lesser extent, Ortmeier.

Um, why don't the Giants just release Winn then? I don't get it.

or just trade Winn for a PTBNL...

The Padres should give the starting role to P-Mac in left, and let Hairston audition for the center field job. P-Mac will hit over .300 if he is an everyday starter, Hairston should be good for 20-25 jacks a year as a starter (remember Cameron's production).

They should have traded a PTNL for J-Mike; he can spell CF, brings a great attitude, costs nothing, and cant be any worse than what they are currently using.

KC should trade Gathright + prospect to SD for Khalil Greene.

So much for the guessing, time to find out what the padres will do.

Mathews is not an option for the padres man, too old and too expensive, we are looking for younger players with team control left, thus lower salaries.Winn, thats the dumbest idea of i ever heard, mainly cause they could simply release Winn in that case. Why would they want to trade with a rival.

Mathews has 3 years and 33 million on his deal after this year. And Winn has another year and 8.25 million. Screw both those ideas.

The braves might need an arm, they've got a couple minor league CF prospects worth a second look.

I dunno..just speculating...

Short list:

Reggie Willits - been supportive of him for a while

Eric Patterson Jr - Blocked in Chicago, how much could they want?

Felix Pie - Can't hit but great at defense

Ryan Freel - not sure if he can stay healthy long term

Just move Hairston to center and have P Mac play left field full time. GOOD DAY SIR, Edmonds: time to join a softball league bro, maybe they'll put you at first base.

Can I start my "Jim Edmonds is much closer to a Hall of Famer than he'll likely ever get credit for so please don't just dismiss him offhand" campaign here and now?

Airman, you talk to much

I agree with Not Joe Morgan - Edmonds will get overlooked for the Hall but man did he ever have a great career patrolling CF.

How about a K. Green for F. Pie swap?

Eric Patterson Jr. is on the Double A DL at the moment. But the Cubs don't like his attitude so he could be had cheaply.

hunter is not ready for the show at all, he has a nice stroke tho but he has no power and really good pitching will shut him down and stunt his growth. but the cal league and petco is pretty much the biggest jump you can make. they need to just let hairston play, and just trade giles, bard and whoever else. maybe bard to the yankees for something.

oxfrat1665 - Eric Patterson (no Jr) was on the AAA DL (not AA DL) and he is now back playing.

"Airman, you talk to much"

Pot or kettle?
