I still don't understand why Tex would want to play in NY. He can get similar money from somewhere else (like SF), and not have to bother putting up with:
1. The media
2. The Steinbrenners
3. The fans

The greast baseball player in the last 50 years plays for Yankees and the city hates the guy on most days.

Its not like the Yankees are serious contenders this year, and will have alot of holes to fill next season....

Darin to flip it over on you, I still dont understand why NY would want Teixeira. We have already established that he is not even one of the top 5 at his position, he plays the easiest position there is to fill in any sport, and he just isn't that good to begin with. The fact that there are constantly good 1B types coming into the league and the fact that pretty much every MLB team has a guy that could produce at 1B for them, and lastly the fact there are some nice options at 1B in the draft this year shows that it is just lazy managing of your resources to spend 20 million on a guy that is at a position of scarcity, isn't even in the top 20 percent of 1B, when history has shown you can find a very good 1B through the draft or even through a platoon if you put in a little bit of work. If the Mets give Teixeria his next contract, after that mess of a contract they gave to Santana, the Mets will be hamstrung and most likely a bad team a few years down the road. Thats my .02 atleast.

nrmax88,

I agree with you 100%. The Yankees will have guys like Posada and Jeter they are going to have to find a spot for in a couple years, and it doesn't make sense to pay Tex more than Pujols and Berkman. But like anytime a free agent talk starts about players, Yankees are always mentioned, like the that's the player's 1st choice regardless if it makes sense for either the player or the Yankees.

And Cali style,

The real failure is a sub .500 team with a $200M payroll, overhyped prospects that usually don't pan out, old pitchers gimpy DHs, and a joke for a 1st baseman.....

Could Cashman replace Colletti in LA?

You have to figure that they can't be pleased in Dodgerland over Colletti's moves in recent years. Pierre is handed a ridiculous contract only to be usurped by Andruw Jones deal, leaving the Dodgers with two bad players and insane dollars wasted. Add in the contracts of Jason Schmidt, Garciaparra and the acquisition of Loaiza, and the owner has to be getting tired of Colletti wasting his money.

Well-said Darin.

To me, it makes perfect sense to just move Posada to first base; this year should show the Yankees that counting on Posada at his age to hold up at catcher is foolish.

The only flaw is the dearth of catchers in this year's free agent class.

A 28 year old switch hitting gold glover 1st basman with a career line of .284/.369/.532. You nut if you had that for 20 million over a 36 year old falling apart making 16 million posting a .230/.310/.368 line.

I wouldn't want to spend 20 million on a 1st baseman but yeah.

"Could Cashman replace Colletti in LA?"

Clear it with Bill Plaschke first.

i hope hank stays himself, lies to cashman, fires him, then the giants do what they shouldve done a couple years ago, fire sabean and cashman gets hired as the gm and turns that team around. with all that young talent and cashmans knowledge on how to put a team together, they would be a contending team again within 3-4 years, nevermind the huge blew to the yanks in losing cashman

Go back to Odds and Ends: Royals, Cashman, Tavarez.

tim - why am i getting this error?

i had put up a piece about kaegel being a clueless dolt. but typepad won't let me..but i will go with my top 5 in the draft:

TB: posey
Pitt: alvarez
KC: t. beckham
Bal: crow
SF: smoak

i wish KC would get smoak, but if beckham is on the board, you gotta take him.

gotta love julian, even a team player when the team doesnt want him

good way to put it 04forever

well, tavarez isnt an idiot, he knows if he becomes a free agent hes taking a pay cut, big time, if he wants to keep playing. its not all about the team, its about himself too

He would be a good pickup for the Yankees right now.

Umm Tavarez is getting paid his contract no matter where he is. If he becomes a free agent (like Edmonds) he will still get paid but would be able to pick which team, that wants him, he wants to be on.

my error, i guess i really dont understand this process very well, so he is a team guy :P

"You nut if you had that for 20 million over a 36 year old falling apart making 16 million posting a .230/.310/.368 line."

I am not sure why Carlos Delgado's line has anything at all to do with the fact that it is a bad idea to sign Tex to a 20 million dollar contract over 7 or 8 years. Obviously I would prefer to have Tex over Delgado right now, that doesnt mean it is the right move to give him huge sum of money.

"my error, i guess i really dont understand this process very well, so he is a team guy :P"

Judging by the previous thread, you also have literally no idea how the hall of fame induction process works either, seeing how you said Mike Piazza wasn;t a hall of famer, and how Biggio would get more votes because they dont have to decide what hat he should wear.

atleast im a man and admit when i was wrong and dont try to dig myself out by fighting on and on like you. maybe if you gave me time to respond, which i did, youd know what they hell you were talking about

You haven't come anywhele close to admitting you were wrong. How am I the one trying to dig myself out of a hole by saying Mike is a HOF? It is not even up for debate whether or not he goes into the hall.

ok whatever. im not going to continue this silly fight anymore, especially in a thread that has nothing to do with it. will just see in 5 years, the end

Wow.

bobhamelin, did you try to curse? Every time I try to drop an F-bomb in a comment I get that same error.

Yes, the Yanks are currently suck up the cellar of the AL East, but we were to last year.. it's only May. The pitching isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is.. Pettite has had some good starts even though he got the losses, Wang is fine, Moose (1 of the 7 runs given up were earned and should've been out of the inning last night), and this kid Rasner is pitching well.. if we can get one of those kids to pitch well in addition we're set.

Tex is a good player and he's goin to get his money - Shelley Duncan just isn't cuttin it.. I wouldn't mind seeing him and Sabathia in pin stripes..

but you'll all see, just like last year - in October we'll be there at the end.
