Brandon Jones Trade Showcase?

We don't know for sure, but David O'Brien suggests the Braves may have called up left fielder Brandon Jones to showcase him for a trade.  Bobby Cox's explanation for demoting Josh Anderson in favor of Jones didn't seem to make sense.

Jones, 24, was hitting .263/.335/.379 in 190 ABs at Triple A Richmond.  Jones was not able to win the Braves' fourth outfielder job out of Spring Training.  Baseball America rated him as the Braves' fourth best prospect, suggesting he's the team's future left fielder.

Jones had a very good season in 2007, but since his call-up late last season, he's been somewhere between horrible and mediocre...I wouldn't think Jones would have much value right now...

Where would he go? Who needs a middling OFer who has some potential?

talk about selling low. i think frank wren has learned his lesson and would not make a move like the one suggested. truthfully, i think brandon jones is being brought up to provide more power. at least he hits doubles, but he may not provide many homeruns.

Let me preface this by saying that I've been a Braves fan for over 25 years -- as long as I've been following baseball.

That said, no club or its fans overvalues its prospects more than the Braves. There are people that legitimately believe that the system is still every bit as stacked -- if not more so -- than before the trade for Tex last year, and that a package of prospects could net them a Lincecum-type pitcher.

Jones would probably only net them another prospect whose star has fallen, or a middling, overpaid big leaguer. Good luck with that.

We already have a Lincecum, named Jair Jurjjens.

And Charlie Morton=Phil Hughes

Jo-Jo Reyes=Felix Hernandez

Blaine Boyer=Papelbon

Well, I think that pretty much validates your point, unbiasedhomer.

"There are people that legitimately believe that the system is still every bit as stacked -- if not more so -- than before the trade for Tex last year, and that a package of prospects could net them a Lincecum-type pitcher."

Did you ever think that maybe it's because they are right? The Braves lost a lot of good players in the Tex trade, but there is no way you can bash that farm system. Since that trade they have added super stud Jason Heyward, the kind of guy you can build a Lincecum-like package around. When BA's top 100 list comes out next year, I'd be willing to promise you that he's in the top 10. He's their best prospect since Francoeur. They added Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez in the Renteria trade. Those two are likely key pieces of their future. Jordan Schafer and Brandon Jones are still top prospects, even if their stars have fallen in recent months. Rohrbrough, Teheran, Hanson and Locke have good potential and Teheran has seen legitimate comparisons to Felix Hernandez. There is no way this farm system is having any issues. If the Braves wanted to land a stud, they could without many issues. GM's would drool over a good package surrounding Heyward.

Eh, they're just rotating various minor leaguers in and out of the OF, hoping one has a really lucky start so he can be moved. Josh Anderson wasn't doing too badly, but he got bumped in favor of Brandon Jones. I think they're just giving exposure to guys they'd LIKE to move because there's just no room for them on a permanent basis on the ML club.

The thing is, if the Braves' farm system were really as good as they claim, they would be developing their OWN studs, not trading for other teams' studs.

And yes, I know, one of the functions of the minor league system is to use that talent to replenish the big league roster through trades, trust me.

Of all the players mentioned, only two (Jurrjens and Hanson) are at or above AA. Projecting players that far out -- except maybe in the case of Heyward or Freddie Freeman -- is a total crap shoot.

Saying the Braves minor league system is loaded is just as stupid as saying the Red Sox is not...the Braves have Jurrijens, Heyward, and I havent given up on Schafaer, besides that, they really dont have a lot. The rest are mid-range spects which every team has

"We already have a Lincecum, named Jair Jurjjens.

i'm a braves fan, and this statement is absurd. yes, CERTAIN braves fans do overvalue their prospects, but to generalize a fan base into one group is basically what our society does with race.
it's just plain dumb to assume those 4 players are equal to the ones he suggested, but it's also equally ridiculous to assume all braves fans think the same.

however, the braves do have a lot of homegrown talent at the major league level and some were actually UNDERVALUED coming up to the major league level. jeff francoeur has been abysmal and all his value is overhyped. kelly johnson and brian mccann, on the other hand, have put up steady numbers when many, including braves fans, never thought they would cut it at the major league level.
the braves do have a top 10 farm system (look at the rankings), however, after getting out of the top 5, the 8-15 rankings are really washes with one outranking the other from year to year.

Land-Man was kidding...

yes, i guess he was. i realize now that is overly absurd, to the point of sarcasm, which i missed. how foolish of me.

I thought my post was ridiculous enough to be an obvious joke. Let us not forget about Julio Teheran, the one arm that might really be in the elite category.

Say what you want but we have FOUR prospects that stack up with ANY organizations FOUR prospects. And that is Schafer, Heyward, Gorkys Hernandez, and Hanson.

Yeah I figured everybody KNEW that Land-Man was just jokin, but I guess some of yall just dont get it. haha. Anyway yeah some Braves fans overvalue prospects but NO way we are the worst at overvaluing them. Red Sox, Yankees, and Cubs overvalue their prospects JUST as much as Braves fans do so I dont wanna hear that argument.

I've been a brave fan since i was cutting my baby teeth, and I can tell you that the braves no doubt have a history of over valuing prospects, but any organization that doesnt take that approach is destined to be in the cellar in 2 or 3 years when the veterans begin to slide. I think that Wren has taken a different approach trading Devine and Ascanio almost as soon as he got here. (That said anyone in there right might would have took the 2 for 1 for Ascanio)I do think that Brandon Jones adds a little bit of power, and the braves are definitely in need of a spark, but as a fan that wants to see them win soon, I hope they are trying o increase his value. The fact is if the braves don't win this year they wasted every prospect they spent on Tex last year and that would be a horrible miss use of resources. Wren must move quickly to turn this slide around or the braves could be left building toward next season by the time the trade deadline rolls around.
