« Odds and Ends: Bonds, Davis, Chulk, Ichiro | Main | Chacon Placed On Waivers »
Before trading ace starter C.C. Sabathia, the Indians intend to make one final attempt to sign him long-term. Ed Price notes that Sabathia does not want to discuss a contract during the season and the Indians won't be ponying up Johan money.
The sides last negotiated in February. The Indians offered four years and around $68-72MM, plus a bonus for his '08 salary. Will the Indians crack and offer a fifth year?

I doubt the Indians can extend him. They couldn't do it in the offseason, and CC is less likely to sign a contract at the end of June. This means that the Indians will put him on the market for sure, though. So, as a Cubs fan, this is good news.

Put it in the books. This deal will get done and CC will stay in Cleveland. I've suspected all along he doesn't want to play anywhere else and he is going to take less to stay in Cleveland.

If the Indians go to 5 years, I could see this deal getting done. Something in the 5 year, $85-90 million would get it done. Going through Double A Akron and then maturing here in Cleveland since his phenomenal rookie season as a 21 year old, I could see C.C. wanting to stay around and bring a championship here to Cleveland.

im sure cc would like to stay in cleveland. im also sure he wont pass on a chance to cash in. we r talking millions and millions of dollars. if he wants to stay in cleveland why wouldnt he just wait until the offseason, field offers from 15 teams, get the best offer and then take it ti the indians? he has ZERO incentive to sign now. none whatsoever. he is running the show, despite what indians ownership and fans might want to think.

Ya, I really don't see CC making an in season extension. I personally get the feeling he walks to the highest bidder at the end of the year, but he might resign.

been trying to tell you guys that its not the money, but rather the years, that has kept Cleveland from signing him. If they offer the same deal they did before with another year and a vesting option, CC is most likely staying in Cleveland...
That said, I really hope they dont and trade him to Mil or LA like is the talk ~ would be much better for the club longterm...

I prefer we keep C.C, trade some existing players or let them walk at the end of the year and add a 3B, SS or 2B...Let Blake be a utility go, Perralta can play SS or 3B and Cabrera "who is tearing up AAA right now" can play 2B or SS...I would also like to find schmuck to trade Hafner to for some bullpen help or another bat.

This reminds me a little of when Jim Thome left Cleveland as a free agent. He wanted to stay, Cleveland wanted him to stay, but the money and/or years just weren't enough. I think CC would like to stay in Cleveland, in an ideal world, but he's not going to turn down his chance to cash in on his talent. I don't blame him, he's not going to be this talented forever, he needs to get paid while he can. If it comes down to a few million bucks, then he could stay, but if it's 10's of millions of dollars he'd be passing up to stay in Cleveland then he can't do it. My gut tells me he gets dealt before the deadline and then hits the free agent market at the end of the year, with Cleveland as a possible but not probable destination.
