« Griffey's Agent Denies Rays Rumor | Main | Wade Looking To Add Pitching »
According to Justice B. Hill of MLB.com, the Indians signed their first round pick Lonnie Chisenhall for $1.2MM. Chisenhall, a left-handed hitter, played mostly shortstop in college but the Indians view him as a third baseman.
Chisenhall may have dropped to #29 partially because of a burglary incident last year. On draft day, only 17% of MLBTR readers polled thought the Indians made the right choice. That may just be because Chisenhall was not a household name.

I dont get this pick. They just drafted Beau Mills, and they also have Wes Hodges in the minors and Andy Marte in the majors. Third base is not a long term position of need for them. They should have looked at Zach Collier or maybe even Casey Kelly if they were willing to pay.

Because Marte blows, Mills and Hodges are uncertainties, and they seem to be much deeper at many other positions like pitching, 1B, and OF.
Plus, the draft is all about drafting the best guy regardless of the position, and apparently they think that guy is Chisenhall. He's certainly started out well already signing and going to Class A Mahoning Valley

Andy Marte is meaningless I agree. But Chisenhall is equally as big an uncertainty as Hodges and Mills, and Mills is considered a better prospect. And the Indians aren't much deeper at other positions. They have Sizemore, Weglarz, Gutierrez and Francisco in the outfield, but the odds are that those four won't be good enough to fill the outfield for a long time. They have nothing in terms of middle infield prospects, with the exception of Asdrubal Cabrera. Adding Casey Kelly as a long term SS would have made far more sense than drafting a 3rd third baseman.

Scribble, apparently you really like Kelly ~ the Indians apparently didnt...
And not sure what that side conversation has anything to do with anything, but they have more than the depth you mention for the OF and have 1B/DH are locked up longterm with a bunch of depth so there is no spilling over to those spots. Youre 2B comment is interesting as well considering Cabrera isnt even a 2B prospect ~ he's just playing there because of the immediate need. Oh, and left off was Barfield, as well as the real expected 2B of the future for the Indians ~ Josh Rodriguez...
Anyway, this is a good pick ~ take the talent and work things out later. With Hodges, Mills and now Chisenhall the team will have three prospects to watch for the 3B position ~ all of which are out of College so will be strong possibilities to be ready for the majors within the teams current controlled window…

Mills will not play 3B in the majors. Not even in the Kevin Kouzmanoff sense.

From what I have heard, Mills is not playing 3rd and will play 1st. So after that, all there really is at 3rd is Hodges and Marte. Seems like a 3rd Baseman was a smart pick.

Well I just think it would have made sense for the Indians to draft a potentially high impact bat at a premium position, like Kelly. Most of my issues with Chisenhall simply come from the fact that I dont know much about him. I'm willing to admit that. As well as the fact that I wasn't aware that Beau Mills is apparently a butcher at third. If he can't hack it at third, then it makes sense to draft someone who projects to play third. The whole Mills situation drastically changes how I view this pick. I just saw them draft two guys who play the same position in back to back years, and I don't see why you do that unless the guy has a special bat. Maybe Chisenhall does have a special bat, but not as far as my knowledge.
And I never called Cabrera a second baseman, I just called him a "middle infield prospect".

“Mills will not play 3B in the majors. Not even in the Kevin Kouzmanoff sense”
…Although I don’t disagree completely; let us not forget that the same was also thought about Thome prior to his 500-ish games at the hotcorner… Shoot, look at Braun ~ we never do really know what the future holds…

Mills has played mostly 1B and DH in the minors, so that's where the Indians are raising him... I'm not sure Josh Rodriguez is much of a prospect, except in the Trevor Crowe sense...
You really don't draft for need in the first round. Chisenhall is probably more a legit 3B than anyone mentioned here.
I wonder why he's so messed up. Probably because his name's Lonnie.

I wonder what it's short for! Lonellen? lol

"I'm not sure Josh Rodriguez is much of a prospect"
...I am blown away to see you say that ~ I mean, he's Richar with plate discipline… And let us not forget that you were predicting amazing things for Danny…

Joshua Rodriguez and his complete lack of power, miserable SB%, and .731 OPS as a 23 year old in AA say hello.

“Joshua Rodriguez and his complete lack of power, miserable SB%, and .731 OPS as a 23 year old in AA say hello.”
…Ahh yes, because 90% of the prospects in the world don’t struggle when first faced with the change from A to AA ball… I mean, obviously Richar never experienced such problems though when he posted a .207/.270/.244 line in his first exposure ~ or even his second with that .415 SLG…
