« Rays Promote Price to Double A | Main | Perrotto's Latest: Sabathia, Bradley »
Late Sunday evening, we rolled out the new design for MLB Trade Rumors. I like the way it turned out. We've added a new logo and a navigation bar and accentuated the RSS feed and site search box.
The big change, of course, is the move from gray text on a black background to the standard black text on a white background. I'll always miss it, in a nostalgic way. But there's no doubt it turned some people away. And there's no question the site is easier on the eyes now.
The main benefit of the redesign should be a better first impression for new readers. The current readers come here for the content, not the site design. That said, the current readers are incredibly important. I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments, positive or negative (please keep it constructive!)

I think the site looks great, and you're right it is definitely easier on the eyes. I like the new logo too, great job!!!

like the old one much better..

It's been said that a light text on a dark background (i.e., as you had it originally) is less strain on the eyes, and that the people who originated the webpage screwed up badly.
I'll miss the black background, but content matters most. Congrats on making this a full-time gig, and I'd personally like some pointers on how to get some cashflow from a website. :)

I really don't think the grey-on-black was harder on the eyes at all - in fact, it made the website stand out. While it may look more "normal" now, I think it also looks slightly more bland - that first attention grabber is no longer there. I think the revamp was an effort to produce a more professional product, but frankly, I think the other one looked more intriguing at first glance.
Posted by: achilles17 | June 23, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Don't listen to those who say it's easier to read light text on a dark background; there's a reason why long lengths of text in books/newspapers/magazines is black on white. It is far easier to read black text on a white background. I'm a graphic designer and my focus was on typography in college, so I'm not just talking out my a**.

It certainly makes it easier for me to surf at work without fear of being nailed from across the room by the boss... :)

Congratulations O Tim of the Trade Rumors. I have to say I will really miss the old look, and that it was extremely appealing...the new layout is much cleaner. I must admit like most, whether it be from familiarity or what I liked the old desingn. However, I'm sure that I will get used to this too I'm sure. All that aside, I think this will be much more user friendly and easier to navigate. Kudos for having one of my most visited websites more than half of the year. I neglect soo much work because of your great info. Now it will be easier to read. Just stay away from the neon type on anything background and I will continue to frequent as long as the website lives. And may you live forever...or at least until I die, or can't see anymore.
Posted by: bravestillidie | June 23, 2008 at 12:19 AM
I look at it this way: a new reader probably would not land here, look at a standard color scheme, and leave because of it. But people definitely looked at the gray on black and immediately left. I got emails to that effect on a regular basis.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | June 23, 2008 at 12:21 AM
hey tim congrats on the change. as long as the content is good i dont think it matters what the site looks like.
Posted by: aramisramirez | June 23, 2008 at 12:25 AM
Though i do agree with ted, i also side strongly with achilles17 in that some aspects of the redesign make it a bit more bland. i loved getting online and getting my daily dose of trade rumors from such a well-written and well-done website. that's certainly not to say that either of those are diminished with the redesign, i simply think the new version lacks some of the personality of the old. it was (and still is) a unique site and i liked that it had a different feel to it. i will certainly continue to read it as often as always because i think the content and writing are both phenomenal (congrats to tim on that one). i agree with your point though that the white on black will be missed for many in a nostalgic way (i think many of your readers feel the same way you do on that matter). some of the new features are big improvements however. when it was first unveiled, i loved the new logo and i still like it just as much now. the old one will be missed with the familiar collage of studs greeting readers with each access, but i like this one a lot. the format and layout of the site are much improved as well. i didn't have any real problems with the old layout, it just seemed rather scattered sometimes but i didn't mind as i love the content. the navigation bar and prominent search bar and RSS feeds are nice additions and i agree with you in that this new format will likely attract more new readers and allow the site to expand. i would guess that many of the old readers will continue to visit regularly (despite the occasional bouts of hysteria caused by the newfound lack of any credible site featuring the familiar white on black design) as they appreciate everything you do to make this site what it is. i think this was the right thing to do and i will continue to read every rumor that you can dig up. thanks tim.
Posted by: jacklaf | June 23, 2008 at 12:25 AM
I'd appreciate a button that lets you revert back to the old scheme. Make this black on white crap the default if it helps the page, but let those who want it refuse to change
Like, you don't have to support the old scheme or make it work perfectly. It would be a really nice gesture to the older readers and simple to program, no?
Posted by: Zolthorg | June 23, 2008 at 12:26 AM
CHANGE!!! ARGGHHHH!!!
just kidding i like it. but i'd read this site if it was red text on an red-orange background
Posted by: baleen | June 23, 2008 at 12:27 AM
Not a fan...the new design looks like your typical blog site. The cool thing about the white on black was that the dark background served as the under-tone for the "hush-hush" nature of trade rumors. At first glance of the new site, I thought I was reading "38pitches".
Posted by: thered86 | June 23, 2008 at 12:27 AM
The old look was a lot better. This is a strain on the eyes now.
At the very least, the site had a unique look to it, now it just looks like every other website. I liked the font and the original banner better too.
Overall, I think the website is worse off now than before in appearance.
I do like the organization now better than before. That is one area that is a lot better.
Posted by: green_and_gold | June 23, 2008 at 12:30 AM
Tim - great job. White or black it's the content that counts. People will get used to it.
Now if only we had better control over contents (reply to, editing, deleting). That would the bomb.
Posted by: bjsguess | June 23, 2008 at 12:36 AM
I agree with Zolthorg about a revert button. It really has lost it's originality. When Gammons released his top blog sites way back when, I checked them all out. Yours was the only one, "to me", that didn't look generic, or created from a template. Yours had a secret mood to it! That has all changed with this new design. You know that feeling you get when your favorite band goes mainstream? That just happened to my favorite baseball site!
Posted by: 100YearsAndCounting | June 23, 2008 at 12:37 AM
I'm resigned to the fact that you can't please everyone. So the fundamental changes we made are not likely to be undone. I sympathize with those who miss the old look, but we are turning the page on it.
I am very interested in suggestions for tweaks though. Small changes or additions to what we have here.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | June 23, 2008 at 12:38 AM
I'm gonna miss seeing the old logo. Who'd you say it was Tim, Edmonds I think?
Keep bringing the content, and I'll keep coming no matter what the style!
Posted by: Raf821 | June 23, 2008 at 12:41 AM
How about a different color for the background (outside of the text)?
You'd keep the black on white text, but a different color would take away from the blandness of the all white...
Posted by: Hyro | June 23, 2008 at 12:42 AM
The old design actually was a template 100Years!
I was always torn when a favorite band of mine started to enjoy mainstream success. On one hand I liked them being my little secret or something I could introduce people to. On the other hand I was happy for the band and didn't mind them growing as long as they continued making good music.

…Not sure if anyone mentioned it or not, but I need the “RECENT POSTS” sidebar on the actual thread pages to be able to easily check the site on my phone. Without it, I will never know if new rumors are added…
Otherwise, same gripes as the first couple posters about the new bland look, but I’ll get used to it so… Do love the comment section being broken by post, makes huge difference…
Is it just me, or does it load slower though?

As a guy who reads the site often but never comments, I just have to say that while I preferred the old site, adjusting to this shouldn't take too long. And as you said, it's the content that matters.
Posted by: UtesFan89 | June 23, 2008 at 01:08 AM
im pretty sure the reason long texts in books/magaizines/newspapers are black on white is because it is much cheaper than printing white on black.... but i agree with most that the site lost a little cache but gained in some other aspects as well
Posted by: bigmcq16 | June 23, 2008 at 01:12 AM
I like the new look, but don't care for the banner. The banner has a very 'Grunge' look to it, and clashes with the professional look of the rest of the website. That's the one thing that I feel should be modified.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | June 23, 2008 at 01:13 AM
I agree with a lot of these other posters. Liked the old way much better, with the white on black. Not that this would cause me to stop visiting the site, but it would be cool if there was an option to have either background, so the people that liked the white on black can keep it that way. I am sure it isn't that difficult to do. I remember myspace did something similar, they changed the format of the site, but they left the option for the original way also. Will definitely miss the white on black though.

I think this describes how I feel perfectly. The white on black stood out when you first logged on. This does look a tad normal, or bland, as achilles said.

"Don't listen to those who say it's easier to read light text on a dark background"
Yes, I am sure they are all lying through their teeth. In reality it kills their eyes to read, but they like to pretend that it doesn't.
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 23, 2008 at 01:20 AM
Darkstar - the Recent Posts on individual pages is something I will fix this week. I should also add that I'm toying with a mobile version of MLBTR.
In reader surveys the overwhelming sentiment on the old version was that it was bland. Just a reminder...that look was anything but flashy. Unconventional, maybe.
We are still working on load time a bit. It seems a bit slower in IE but it's pretty fast in Firefox.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | June 23, 2008 at 01:20 AM
I respect and agree with your Mainstream opinion Tim. In terms of success I wish you endless.
Yet I welcomed this change as much as I do Wrigley Field being sold and renamed. But as with both, I am not going anywhere. Loyalty even with your not so secretive mood.
Just don't turn into Fred Durst!

First time commenter, long, long time reader.
Man, I feel like I lost a friend. There was something so neat about the way this site was. It hooked me the second I found it, and if not for the scheme I may have never ended up becoming a reader here. The content is great, and sure I will get used to it, but only extremely grudgingly. I understand you do this fulltime now and have to think about business, but it seems a little bit selfish to me to not even give an option for the readers to view the content in the old style. It seems that the majority of these comments dont like the new look much. The old readers are the people who got you to this point of success (although you did the great work, but they followed and supported it), and it just doesn't seem right to forget about what they want and market for people who haven't even come across your site yet. Sorry if this seems out of line. Just doesn't seem like it would be a big deal at all to give the option of which layout the reader wants to see.
Posted by: OG triple OG | June 23, 2008 at 01:38 AM
Cool deal, thanks Tim.
Also thought of something else. If at all possible it would be nice if there was just a tiny bit more border before the comments section starts. Right now the page is not centered on the screen ~ not a huge deal, but makes me feel a bit tilted when reading it. In my current tired state, I’m finding myself leaning to the left of my chair ever so slightly. Considering we have a couple posters who might have a drink (or ten) when reading/posting, it might prove to be a bit of a health hazard… (yeah nrmax, looking out for ya buddy)
PS, the “an error has occurred” page (which sadly didn’t go away) still has the old scheme.
Posted by: darkstar1661 | June 23, 2008 at 01:39 AM
I kind of feel like when I am typing a comment here or reading the comments, like I am writing a paper on microsoft word. Just plain looking and boring, no offense. I think you had a good thing going, and it seems like most of your readers would rather see the old layout. Maybe you should do a viewer poll just to see how many people actually feel this way, or if this is just a small sample size in the comment section.
Posted by: OG triple OG | June 23, 2008 at 01:42 AM
Needs more color...
Posted by: Zonis | June 23, 2008 at 01:48 AM
Hey Tim,
Would like to just say I'm a huge fan of the new look. But agree with the post from Hyro about while I like the black on white look, outside of the typing area what about a different color just underneath the sidebar that matches the navigation bars or something. Would kind of set off the content posts you make, as well as providing some variety to the page for those saying it is bland. Just an idea...
Posted by: BravoFan | June 23, 2008 at 01:48 AM
i think it looks great. i can read a page of material without having to visit the optician. i wouldn't worry too much about the complaints... everyone will get used to it before too long, and we're all going to keep coming back for the content. Thanks.

good lookin out dark ;)
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 23, 2008 at 01:52 AM
I'm not gonna lie, I was a bigger fan of the old version. The new design is weak and bland. Kind of boring if you will... The old one was unique and colorful. This new design looks like every other blog online. Either way, I'll still be reading on a daily basis but the old version was much more appealing in my eyes.
Posted by: thenextgm08 | June 23, 2008 at 02:04 AM
G'day Timmoh,
I liked the old style 1000 times more, but I guess I'll get used to this one.
Keep up the good work. :)
Posted by: OaklandAussie | June 23, 2008 at 02:59 AM
You can tell that the average viewership of this site must be about 18-22 years old with 20/20 vision. Take it from someone whose vision isn't the best, the old layout would cause a headache to me if I read it longer then 5 minutes.
This might be a little too drastic a change though, personally I would like to see the text on a light grey like your sidebars are using Tim. But it's a welcome change regardless for me.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | June 23, 2008 at 03:50 AM
i guess itll grow on me prefer the old one though...
Posted by: Hbkfan27 | June 23, 2008 at 04:26 AM
also i wouldnt mind the gray like the sidebars
Posted by: Hbkfan27 | June 23, 2008 at 04:39 AM
The black background is easier on the eyes. It's not really debatable. This is like staring at a light bulb compared to that.
Doesn't really matter though. It's all about content. If people take the time to email about the color scheme that means they are reading it.
The logo is a little corny, or dated, with the rough stone look or whatever you are going for there.
Like I said, I don't really care though and I'm no web designer. I'll check the site just as often regardless.
Posted by: plh903 | June 23, 2008 at 05:58 AM
I like the new look. Much brighter than the old Gothic look.
Posted by: poouch | June 23, 2008 at 06:28 AM
i liked the black backround/white text but as is the consensus, its not the look, its the content. although i think that you should do the thing that MySpace did for a while. make it so you can choose white/black or black/white (backround/text respectably). ..now only if we got rid of the type-pad that makes it so i cant really post more than once without exiting out the page..
Posted by: fgsfsfbbbrd | June 23, 2008 at 06:31 AM
i miss the old site. maybe cause i just got use to it after going on like 5 times a day for updates, but still. Its going to take a while to adjust to all the contents being moved to the right side. i see how it can shy away some of the users. Its kinda plain, but it is about the content of the rumors and rumblings.
Posted by: TimmaH55 | June 23, 2008 at 06:32 AM
Tim~
Long time reader of your great blog ... You can count me in as one of those that will miss the old site ... The black with white text gave it a unique feel that I just do not get with the current re-design ... that said the content is what keeps me coming to the site not the color scheme ...
Keep up the good work
Posted by: Validlyte | June 23, 2008 at 06:35 AM
I prefer the old look, but I guess the new look is OK, just a bit bland. I agree with the majority of opinions here, which is: it's the content that matters, and the content is fantastic!!! Keep up the good work, Tim, and thanks very much.
Posted by: plymouthyankee | June 23, 2008 at 06:40 AM
The new site looks pretty nice so far. Perhaps with the new bar at the top some drop down menus could be incorporated in the future.
Perhaps you could find a font that pops a little more. Nothing crazy mind you, neither something that would make it hard to load on diferent browsers, clients, etc...but just something with a little more pop. It just doesn't stand out as much as the gray on black.
Also, just a suggestion. Perhaps when a players/propsect named is mention, it could be a hyperlink of a stat page?
Posted by: tmichalski | June 23, 2008 at 06:42 AM
It doesn't matter what your site looks like when you first build it: people will say they miss that look when you change it because people resist change. Ignore them. Looks great.
One suggestion though: I don't think it's really necessary to list all of the teams in one giant list. Why not just have it say "Rumors by Team" and then have a dropdown list? It's make it even cleaner and would be just as easy to understand/use.
Posted by: Sour Bob | June 23, 2008 at 06:49 AM
I don't like it.
Posted by: Krambo42 | June 23, 2008 at 06:58 AM
Looks the same in Google Reader. :)
This is actually the first time in a long while I've clicked out of reader to see the site. I think it looks great.
Trusting your gut is a good thing. Keep up the good work, thanks for the site!
P.S. Holy crap, I just did a preview of this post and it was back in the old color!

Just signed on to check the latest rumors and BOOM, new design.
I just wanted to give my $0.02- I'll miss the black background, but this is definitely better. And as long as you keep churning out the quality rumors, it really won't matter what color schemes you use.
Posted by: Papelboner | June 23, 2008 at 07:21 AM
Although I would prefer all the links and everything to be back on the left hand side.

Posted by: Stan2219 | June 23, 2008 at 08:32 AM
Like the old format much better. It made the site stand out and now it just looks like an amateur's blog. I think you should put a poll on here and let the dedicated readers decide whether they like the new or old format.
Posted by: txrangers22 | June 23, 2008 at 08:34 AM
I actually liked the old look 1000x better. I agree with the poll idea.
Posted by: Makaveli616 | June 23, 2008 at 09:09 AM
I agree that it looks like an amateur's blog. I don't really feel like it is any easier on the eyes either. It just doesn't seem to stand out anymore.
Posted by: PJH | June 23, 2008 at 09:10 AM
My first reaction was 'whoa'! Different, not better or worse. The grey on black was distinctive, this looks like most other blogs.
That being said, I think it'll be easier on the eyes and I'm here for content.
I love the new masthead.
Posted by: janbergs | June 23, 2008 at 09:24 AM

I don't feel like I'm reading the obituaries or viewing an "inappropriate" site now.

I like the new look, though the ad box on the right side that is right up front is a bit tacky.
Posted by: IowaCubs | June 23, 2008 at 09:34 AM
I loved the old look, but this looks very good as well, anything to improve the site is okay with me. One thing I don't like is all of the links and things on the right side, is that a permanent change?
Posted by: Bosox4416 | June 23, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Long time reader, first time poster.
I understand the choice of the new layout and think it will be effective in growing the site. Consider using an off white background as that may take away what some people are perceiving as a cookie cutter layout. I also think a slightly larger standard font size and maybe a different font could go a long way to making the site more readable.
I am not saying copy PFT, but these guys seem to have struck a good balance between a fairly standard format and a look that is unique enough that readers can feel some attachment to it.
http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/
Since I haven't posted before I'll just take the opportunity to say that I think Tim and all the other writers do a great job and that when I am looking for baseball news this is always my first and often times my only stop. Keep up the great work and congratulations on the success of the site so far.
Posted by: Cashville | June 23, 2008 at 09:42 AM
AAAAAAHHH my eyes! It's so bright! I thought my browser bugged. But you're right. This design should attract new users more easily. The wider display and big font is very nice. Don't have to ctrl + mouse scroll to magnify the text anymore.
Posted by: Victor | June 23, 2008 at 09:46 AM
Yeah, I agree. This thing is way too bright now. It's hard to focus on anything with so much white light on the screen. Maybe you should try some darker colors around the edges.
Posted by: lih | June 23, 2008 at 10:02 AM
The redesign isn't bad. I am disappointed that Typekey is still being employed though :(
I have two suggestions:
1. Put an extra space between posts, to seperate them just a bit. They kind of seem right on top of each other.
2. I'd rather see the navigation bar on the left side than on the right.
Other than that I think the site looks fine. It doesn't hurt my eyes (nor did the old site) and the comments section is much much better (though still operated by Typekey...yuck).
Does this redesign come with less Cubs' fans?
Posted by: Darin | June 23, 2008 at 10:05 AM
tim:
i access the site regularly from my treo on the train, at the game, or out and about...the new site design loads faster and is much easier to read. there isnt a single site on the internet where the comments are as good as the posted content...kudos for creating an awesome baseball community.

My eyes are sensitive to bright lights at night, and the dark color of the old web page was very easy on my eyes, and it was a pleasure to open up after the bright pages of the other sites I visit.
I really do appreciate all the time and effort that goes into this sight. Keep up the good work.
Posted by: geauxbraves | June 23, 2008 at 10:32 AM
I like the new look-but if you really want to make it easy on the eyes, make the background cream or old paper colored.
Posted by: RedFan | June 23, 2008 at 10:38 AM
This version hurts my eyes -- the old was easier on my eyes. This is too bright; I'm a cave dweller with low lighting, and this version makes me feel like I just had my eyes dilated.
But whatever, I'll keep reading either way. I'll get some sunglasses. ;-)

White on black is easier on the eyes. Think about it.
White backgrounds are a holdover from people thinking about computer screens like paper.
Posted by: John Peterson | June 23, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Tim,
If you are interested in having the best of both world (and have the technical expertise), you might consider allowing users to switch the color schemes, for example, it defaults to white and black and the user can reverse it with a click.
You can see another site that does this here:
http://www.blackviper.com/
Posted by: Rederick | June 23, 2008 at 11:43 AM
2 things that I am having trouble with regarding the new site layout:
I liked how the old site, when you had already clicked on a rumor, the link became darker, so that you knew that you had already clicked it. I am not seeing this for the new layout.
Also, when seeing the individual rumors with the comments page, I do not see the list of rumors or the rumors by month anymore, just rumors by team and features.

Posted by: Tim Dierkes | June 23, 2008 at 11:21 AM
He means that when posting a comment, you can choose to preview or post. When you click preview to preview your post, it still shows up on the old format.

I dig the new look, but really dislike the fact that you moved the links to the right side. My eyes don't want to retrain themselves

For the most part I read this site via the RSS feed. However, I agree that the lighter background looks more professional. Having said that, black on white doesn't standout at all and thus MLBTR looks like "just another baseball site". If you added just a touch of color, the site would be more memorable to new users and reduce the bright white glare some.
Oh ya, and I liked the links on the left.
Regardless, the site still kicks.

Bummer. I literally can't read it off either of my Verizon phones. It somehow translates the white background to gray and it bleeds right into the gray text. As someone who uses their phone for the majority of their Internet, I'll come back once in awhile; but I'm holding out for the day where it's reader customizable and I can go back to the good ol' days.

I also registered just to post on this.
I like the new style. I especially like the menus to the right. They are much easier to get to and use.
That being said, I agree with those that say it could use a little more color. Some borders/shading, etc.
It still looks professional. And as long as the content stays as good as it is, I'll keep coming back (and posting now that I've registered...)

Hi Tim -
I have been a huge fan of the site for several months now and, like some other visitors, finally registered as a user to comment on the changes to the site.
Two things jumped at me immediately:
1) It took the revised site a loooong time to load and I am on a pretty quick Broadband connection. Actually, I originally thought the site was down. It appears that the new site format is much more bandwidth unfriendly so perhaps some sort of site compression might be of benefit.
2) While the new site is technically prettier (and I am not sure if pretty is what you were shooting for,) the new site is REALLY bright and definitely strains the eyes more than the old site. Maybe a simple swap of the background colors would improve the brightness, meaning swap the grey background from the margins to the body and move the white to the margins.
Just throwing thoughts out there...
Love the content and appreciate all of the hard work that goes into the site. Thank you!

Tim -
In addition to the comments above, I may have uncovered a possible bug to look into. When I went to preview my comments, it took me to a preview page in the old black page format, and not the new pretty format.

I am working hard to improve the load time...in the meantime I recommend Firefox. It's a lot faster on Firefox than on IE.

I like the new banner alot and the black txt on white better as well. the look doesn't really matter to me though...i just come here for the content which is always great. keep it up!

I like the changes. White on black or vice versa really doesn't matter that much to me.
The menu on right is much better just b/c it makes it easier to have a smaller window with this site open and watch mlb.tv on another window at the same time.

A couple things...
1) It's much easier to read for most I'll assume, I've never needed glasses, so the old format didn't bother me, but I can tell the words jump out at you a little more with the black on white.
2) Just because it's easier to read, doesn't make it an improvement. Most sites that have a white background in my opinion based on my experience are usually redirects and my first impulse was to close the window when I saw a white screen. Add some color, it couldn't hurt... Maybe a shade of gray. Even a light to medium gray would tell people that this site is legit.
3) When you simplify the site to cater to the few people that wouldn't come here because of the color scheme, you are making a huge mistake. This site is about the true fan, passionate baseball people, etc. If a person is that put-off with the color scheme of the site to leave and not come back, they aren't the type of people you want commenting on a site like this. In my opinion of course...
You may just be looking for a hit count, so you can get more advertising dollars to fund the site, which I understand you have overhead and that makes sense, but just a word of caution, don't lose your artist integrity. You founded this site I'm assuming for there to be ONE place to get ALL information baseball involving the movement of players. Stay true to your vision and the money will come, you don't have to mainstream your concept to get Corporate America to give you advertising dollars!
I've run a business or eight in my time, one of which was grossing 1/4 million dollars a month between three stores. The one thing they used to say to me was, "your owner is a moron and a crook, your stores are a little rundown and aren't always the most clean, and your employees are a little rough around the edges, but you sell more than anyone else in the area, you do the best custom work around, and you guys pay your bills when you're supposed to, that's why we stay with you." That was from every regional director of every major car audio company in the country. We had all the best names and pick of whatever line we wanted. I realized quickly that our image and not aesthetically, but rather our competency, ethics, and ability, were the most important thing to the store succeeding.

In my opinion, enduring the old color scheme didn't make people true fans. Just liking the content and coming back, that's all a true fan needs to do. And actually I do want those people who have been turned away by the old color scheme (often times, the elderly).

You seem to be implying a crappy dirty store with great employees and service is somehow better than a clean, attractive store with the exact same great employees and service. I respectfully disagree.

the guru has spoken! anwyays, i agree any true fan of the site will keep reading regardless of the color scheme. and i assume you will gain a good number of new readers based on the fact that it may be easier for them to read. i do like one of the ideas mentioned earlier, however, that suggested some sort of darker background as opposed to the plain white. i don't know if it would be feasible or even whether you agree it would add anything to the redesign, i just get this picture in my mind of a background about the color of the "rumors by team" bars. it couldn't be too dark because you still would want to keep the black text, but i think it would look really nice if you went with that from the top navigation bar to the bottom one. any boxes (the ones with the search bar, mailing list, ads, etc. as well as all comments) could remain white. i don't know if you agree tim but i think it would be a really nice effect and spruce up the information portion of the new site a bit. everything around the edges looks great, i just think the actual text portion could use something. also, the spacing between comments is really nice and is more regarding who posts each comment. any old reader was used to the format and could usually figure out who was writing based on the text, but any new reader could've had trouble. i like the small amount of space in between each post, and i think a different colored background could help to accentuate those breaks, if you can picture what i'm talking about (view posts while envisioning this). just a few suggestions. oh and i don't think the simple concept of a site redesign makes you or any of your writers heinously incompetent or unethical in any regard as guru seems to think. but i could be wrong. just thought i'd throw it out there for anyone who might now be confused regarding tim's "artist integrity" or apparent lack thereof. thanks tim!

Love the new look, but I've been having some issues with the speed of the site since the new look went live as well.
As for the old look making it stand out. You should never rely on a look for that it should always be the content of the site. There is a reason why the majority of sites are black on white.
I'll take a very plain looking but very informative site over one that is extrememly flashy and has next to nothing on it.
Personally I think the new look is far more professional looking

Wow I log onto the computer to check MLBTR, and even though I already saw the new layout I was disapointed again. It just doesn't look that great to me. Looks like the comments section at the bottom of an online newspaper story. I will still visit the site just as often, but it definitely, in my opinion is worse off then it was. Seeing as how (atleast from judging by these comments) around 80 percent of your loyal readers like the old style more, it really shouldn't be that hard to give them an option of which format to view the site under. Just seems like it is the right thing to do.
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 23, 2008 at 05:26 PM
By no means do I want to piss off loyal readers, but an option to change the format back is not in the cards. There are other aspects of MLBTR with a stronger need for resources/attention.
There is the expected grumbling here in the comments that comes with any change, but you have to remember that that is roughly 50 people complaining out of 35,000.

Additionally, I've received many positive emails today, outnumbering the negative comments by quite a bit. I want everyone to be happy but it's not realistic.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | June 23, 2008 at 05:58 PM
I like the new site, my only suggestion is putting a darker shade of gray on the outsides of the white to make the page pop a little more, just go down a couple shades of gray
