Odds And Ends: Flurry of DFAs And GM Contract Talks

Tying lose ends on a very slow Saturday indeed.

  • In a series of moves, the Jay's have activated Vernon Wells with less than a month after he broke his wrist in Cleveland and DFA'd Armando Benitez. I guess they're not going after Bonds.
  • Steinbrenner: "There are no plans to sit down and talk with general manager Brian Cashman about his contract status." The G.M.'s contract expires after the 2008 season.
  • By activating Jayson Werth from the DL, the Phillies were forced to DFA Chris Snelling, but the young outfielder is out of options. He has three days to accept the assignment or become a free agent.
  • In order to make room for the newly-acquired Berroa, the Dodgers DFA'd Terry Tiffee. Dodgers beat writer Tony Jackson thinks he could be more expendable this way if he gets claimed off waivers.
  • Bengie Molina is upset by comments made by Giant's G.M. Brian Sabean after this week's draft. Sabean said Buster Posey "is on the fast track and Bengie's clock is winding down."

that is just wrong what sabean said! bengie has been good for the giants...why would u say that?

I would be upset if I was Bengie too. Sabean was talking about his contract but you still don't say it in that way, referring to a player personally.

Buster Posey is amazing thats why he said it

I'm guessing he said it because it's true. Let's all be realistic here: Bengie's clock IS winding down and Posey is on the fast track. Maybe it could have been worded a little differently, but I actually agree 100% with Sabean...for once.

Bengie is having probably his best offensive season ever and his clock is winding down? Remember, he was platooned a lot in Anaheim, which means he has fewer crouches than other catchers to add up on his body.

As for the Tiffee thing, the FOX guys got it wrong. They said he was "sent down" not DFA'ed. Ken Gurnick alluded to Hu's demotion coinciding with LaRoche being called up to back up the corners and play some second, and then Furcal's come back will probably mean Maza gets optioned back.

Bengie is one of the best and underrated catchers playing today. He is a great defensive catcher, he calls good games, he is a great clutch hitter. The Angels made a mistake letting him go. Everytime the Angels needed a clutch base hit you knew Bengie would get it before he hit the ball. Sabean has no right to just say that about Bengie in the open.

No love for Terry Tiffee??, unacceptable. He's my favored replacement for Curtis Pride as I really hope he hangs on candidate of baseball.

Not sure if anyone caught/mentioned it but another release...

Rob Mackowiak was given his unconditional release on Saturday as the Nationals are expected to recall right-handed pitcher Garret Mock to take his roster spot, according to MLB.com.

...Although I cant share the love for Tiffee, I can honestly say I agree 100% on Curtis. He and Lou Merloni were my fav "root for a replacement" guys...

Man, you have to figure at some point Cashman is going to man up and just say "to hell with you guys, I'm outta here."

His pictures look like he's gone through two terms as president and he's all but assured of getting any GM spot he wants that opens up in the next two years.

why does brian sabean still have a job? bengie is hitting .332 with 6 bombs, 40 rbis and an .857 ops. he should probably be starting the all star game at catcher for the nl. next to lincecum, he's probably been the giants mvp this year. that's absolutely rediculous that he would say something like that to the media right now.

and i agree with angels fan. he's one of the slowest guys in the majors, but other than that there haven't been too many holes in this game. he has been a little underrated throughout his career.

Bengie is slow and the least patient hitter on the planet next to Pedro Feliz and Neifi Perez. Yes, he's been great this year...deserving of the all-star game. Yes, he works well with the pitchers. Yes, he is mashing this year at the plate. That being said, Sabean was most likely just pointing out that Molina's contract is up after next year...so his clock IS winding down and it's just a simple fact. I just hope that Sabean doesn't do something stupid and sign him to an extension...he'll be 35 in 2010 and I don't care how much mileage he has as a catcher...he's tubby and old, while Posey is the obvious future.

And I wouldn't say he's that underrated. He's won two Gold Gloves so obviously there's a lot of writer's out there that have recognized his talent. Furthermore, up until this year he's never put up an OPS+ of 101 or more. That means he's never put up an above-average OPS in his career...up until this year. In fact, he's only put up an average OPS+ (100) twice! So most of his career he has really been a below-average hitter who doesn't run, work counts, and tends to have more than average amounts of passed balls. I wouldn't say he is underrated at all.
