Padres Undecided On Buy/Sell Status

Teams around baseball are probably anxiously eyeing various Padres veterans, especially Brian Giles, Greg Maddux, and Randy Wolf.  However, the front office remains undecided on whether to buy or sell at the trade deadline.

Normally a .416 winning percentage about halfway through the season would be enough to call it quits.  However, the NL West has only one team over .500 and the Padres are eight games out.  It's too early to wave the white flag, especially with 31 games remaining until the trade deadline.

Chris Young could come back strong and Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff might continue their upward trends.  If the Padres are three or four games out in late July, Kevin Towers could look to add a hitter.

I am a big fan of keeping the faith, but honestly I do not see them competing this year. But I can see why Towers would want to wait, he wanted to get max value for the pieces he does have. If you are going to trade them away you want to make sure you get something worthwhile in return. Mainly a CF or Pitching, since i doubt any pieces we have will allow us to pick up an impact bat.

I could see a deal in which the Padres send Chris Young to the Brew Crew for Cole Gilaspie, and Matt LaPorta/Lorenzo Cain. Padres despiratly need some talent in the Minors other then Headly, Antonelli, and Hunter. And Brewers could move Greene over to 3rd to replace the struggling Bill Hall.

AriGold, where does Greene come from? It would be highly unlikely the Padres trade Young, but Greene without getting a young ready SS to replace him would never happen. The Padres are going to see what kind of talent they can get for the vets before they start selling off building blocks.

I think that its possible the Padres trade Chris Young, but not now, since he is hurt and there is no timetable for his return. His value is low at the moment, and they could get more for a #2 starter.

And regarding that rumor about a Kouz for Bay trade, not sure about that, there were no sources I can find. But it does seem something that is within the realm of possibility. Personally I think we trade Wolf for an outfielder and AA/A prospect with upside.

The best thing that can happen to the Padres is an extended losing streak. Close the book on this season. Build to go depper in the playoffs in the next few years than another 3 and done this season (if everything breaks their way).

OK just a few trades that would make sense for the Pads (and be fair for both sides).

Randy Wolf for Yunesky Sanchez and Amaury Rivas. Would give the Brewers a solid arm behind Sheets, while giving the Padres a future behind Khalil Greene.

Would Maddux take a trade to the AL? How about Maddux for Reggie Willits?

I am not sure what the market for Kouz, Giles and Tony Clark would bear...but I think they are all tradeable commodities.

its time to make my triumphant return to mlb trade rumors. sorry but i dont find this site fun unless its trade deadline time or the offseason.

anyways, like ive been saying for years, the padres need to trade their pitching for hitting. that ballpark inflates pitchers stats and makes them look more valuable then they are. randy wolff and greg maddux(the right team) are as good as gone. i just dont understand why these pitchers go to san diego, have a good year, and everyone thinks the guy suddenly figured it out. its the ballpark

as for young and greene what? those guys arent going anywhere. young is the exception to the pitching rule having put up good numbers in texas before being traded and greene has shown power hitting in that cavern. i guess after that they will shop gonzalez and peavy too right?

Brian Giles, Greg Maddux, and Trevor Hoffman are all making $10 million a year. Hard to justify. Hoffman was given a contract in a similar style as a NFL running back, rewarded when production is on the decline. Hoffman should have went out on top, after last season.

Giles and Maddux probably deserve what they are being paid, but they are being paid by the wrong team, the Padres simply can't afford them.

The solution is not to trade Randy Wolf, who is a great pitcher, and has a contract favorable to the organization. The San Diego Padres need to do a house cleaning!

The Padres ruin their chances for having a good team in the future by having moderate success the year before.

I think the Padres had the tools this year but injuries have kept them out of it. In my opinion they were one big bat away from a solid team.

I think the padres should key in on trading Giles, Maddux, Clark, Wolf, Greene, and the Kouz.

If we could package up greene, wolf, and kouz together we could get a shortstop of quality in return and probably some good minor league pitching.

Move iguchi or E. Gonzalez to third and continue to play headley in the outfield.

As for giles and maddux they would look real good in pinstripes or with the cubs.

A deal to either team would very likely net us an outfield prospect....just not pie hopefully

I just hate seeing the padres paying 40 year olds 10 mil a year when there are guys on the free agent market that could really improve this ball club.

Not sure how "hittman" figures that Wolf's contract is favorable to the team, it is a one year deal. Which in my mind makes it the best possible contract to unload.

There is no money down the road to pay-off (a la Jim Edmonds), it is a rental for the receiving team, pure and simple.

Wolf and Giles may be the most valuable trading commodities (along with Maddux who has a no-trade) the Padres have.

The Padres not adding a power hitter was the most incomprehensible non-deal of last year's trade deadline. That pretty easily could've changed the face of the NL last year. Their pitching staff would've been scary in the playoffs.

This year... I just don't see it.
