« Orioles Designate Bynum | Main | New Look For MLBTR »
MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli writes that the Tampa Bay Rays have promoted David Price to Double A Montgomery. Price, the #1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, is on the fast-track to the Major Leagues, and there has been speculation that he could join the big league club before season's end. This most recent promotion could be a step towards that outcome.
Price made six starts for Class A Vero Beach, going 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA and posting a brilliant 37:7 K:BB ratio in 34.2 IP. He could start for Montgomery as soon as Thursday.
A lot could happen over the next month or two, but if Price continues to baffle minor league hitters, he could shoot up to the Major Leagues quickly and be a factor as the Rays try to secure a spot in the postseason. Remember, Andrew Miller didn't even have a month's worth of experience when the Tigers brought him up to the big league club back in 2006.

I get that Price is a very highly touted prospect, but when did a promotion to Double A become post-worthy? Can't we wait to hear about it when he's actually coming up to the MLB for sure? I think so.

and a guy getting promoted to aa is important why ? i could understand if he got the call to the bigs but double a cmon
Posted by: redsfan | June 22, 2008 at 04:18 PM
I don't think it's fair to refer to Price as "a guy," he's one of the top prospects in all of baseball. Let's be fair to him first and foremost.
I agree it's a borderline topic, but then again, the only other news for the afternoon was Freddie Bynum's designation. I thought the readers might want something new, even if it's not exactly earth-shattering news yet.
It's a slow day, and coming fresh off of this year's draft, it stood out as a point of interest. Price's numbers to me are of bigger interest than his promotion. There's been speculation as to whether or not he'd be able to make it to the Majors this year, and this seemed like a good sign. In the case of a normal player, I wouldn't bother posting. But considering who we're talking about and where the Rays are in the East, it can bear some significance on the rest of the season and also on what parts the Rays can afford to move when the deadline comes, depending on Price's progress.

Hey Steve, I don't want to sound like I'm picking on you guys or anything because you're all very good writers and typically do a good job of picking and choosing appropriate topics to post on, but do you think that you (and some of the other writers on the site) too often post for posting's sake? I think Tim pays you guys per post so it's a big incentive to post on as many topics as possible, but it seems to me that there's a limit as to what should be covered and if it starts getting crossed too frequently, the quality of the site suffers tremendously. I know all you guys want to get a word in and most of you have very worthwhile things to say, but would it sometimes be better to let the previous stuff lead (and not write on anything in your designated time slot) if the only newsworthy stuff is, as you said, a minor league promotion and the designation of a sub-par player? Again, I don't want this to look like I'm singling you out because it's something that really allies to all the site's writers in general, but since it seems to have come up as a result of this post, I was wondering if you had any insight into the matter (or if you could pass our thoughts along to Tim). Thanks Steve.

You guys are getting insane... i think this is note worthy... he is the number one pick in the draft last season, and he is on the fast track. Designations, promotions, this is the stuff this site is here for and too many of you just complain for the sake of it. Carry on with posting stuff like this. I look forward to the next one in about July when he is promoted to AAA or the Bigs... Thanks Noah

First of all Cjhel, I appreciate the tone of your post. Constructive criticism is always welcome.
I'd like to speak on behalf of all writers in saying I never post just for the sake of it. There have been many Sunday afternoons over the past month or so (my time slot) in which there have been only one, or sometimes zero posts.
When someone gets designated for assignment, I make a post about it, regardless of who it is. In Bynum's case, it was hardly exciting news (no offense to any fans of the Orioles or Bynum himself), and I recognize that fact, but DFAs are something I cover.
As for Price, I realize this was a borderline topic, but I explained my thoughts on it in my previous comment. I figured some people would find it trivial, but I also recognize the fact that David Price is a top prospect and his progress is something many people are curious about. Given the fact that it was a slow afternoon, I stretched a bit because it's a name who could have a tremendous impact on baseball for years to come.
Again, I appreciate the calm and respectful manner of your post, and I will gladly pass your post on. Know, however, that I would never post something for the sake of posting it because I enjoy seeing my name at the bottom of the article.
As I said, since we are so closely removed from the draft this year, a topic Tim wanted to cover, I thought that readers would have an interest in how the biggest name from last year's draft was coming along. I know it's not as exciting or of the same magnitude as a lot of other topics on the site. I agree, it's stretching a bit, but I also stand by the fact that I don't consider it an insignificant post.
I don't mind sharing your opinion with Tim though, no. Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks Noah, it's also nice to hear reassuring feedback as well.
I personally don't mind people voicing their opinons, and don't think they're complaining for the sake of it. I think everyone should have the right to speak their minds here.
It's impossible to please everyone. I'm glad you share my opinion that it's noteworthy, though!

Steve..
personally, i think you and everyone else do a great job on the weekends for us, and even if its a minor league promotion, its news-worthy as Price is not just a "minor league player"..
i hate whiners who whine about content without realizing weekends are VERY slow news days. but without you guys, we can't expect Tim to be around at all times.
you guys need to lay off Steve, and appreciate the site for all things posted. new content is content...and i am appreciative.

I don't have any prob with the choice of topic here. MLBTR doesn't chronicle the minor leagues but things involving the biggest names sometimes make the cut. Players have been known to leap from Double A to the Majors, and Price could do that. That could affect TB's acquisition plans, so I don't mind an item on it.
I have never seen an item that I thought a weekend writer posted just for money. It's a tough gig for the afternoon people, since most of the good news has been taken.

No problem, Steve. Thanks for the explanation and prompt response, as well as for the polite nature of your reply (a lesser writer probably would have just bitched at me and said to shut up or something). Basically, I was just unsure if this was a growing trend with MLBTR changing their entire scope and I'd have to log on and read about Jorge Jimenez getting promoted to the Portland Sea Dogs and other miniscule minor league happenings; glad to hear it's just going to be with big name draftees/MiLBers and those moves that will affect a team's potential acquisitions. Thank you to Tim, too, for weighing in on the matter. Take care guys.

My gosh, it is a worthy post about one of the top prospects in baseball, and on a slow news day, yea I wanna hear about it. Most of us here at this site play fantasy baseball, and of course are interested in the next big thing so we can put him on our team. Even beyond Fantasy and into reality, diehard fans want to hear things like this, as it keeps them updated on what is happening with possibly one of the biggest names of the future. Finally, as has been mentioned, this does relate to this site, because if price comes up, someone may be DFA'd, or a pitcher on the rays may become available for a trade. As a baseball lover, I am always wanting to know what is going on with the future stars of the game. For those of you do not like what is posted, just skip this write-up and move onto the next one. But please do not complain and criticize someone or a team of writers who consistiently take time out of their lives to inform us with information that each reader of this site really wants to know. This is an awesome service, so please do a similar service and quit whining for no reason at all... Thanks.

Frequent reader, infrequent poster here. I come to MLBTR to hear the latest trade news and speculation. But, I am also an avid fantasy baseball fan, and as an owner in a few "keeper" leagues I absoluetly love this site. Tim is right, Price could jump to the bigs and maybe take the 5th starter's gig or maybe be a dynamite lefty out of the pen to help bridge the gap to Percival. His progression could help dictate the Rays actions before the trade deadline, and it is definite news.
I don't recall anyone griping about the posts leading up Bruce's or Longoria's promotions, and I'm glad the posts were there because now I have a couple of guys to build around for the future in my fantasy league, and maybe I can add Price to that list as well.
Keep up the good work guys.

on a side note..
HoRam was called up by the Royals today.
Hope he has some gas left in the tank.

Hey guys, why don't you let Tim worry about what's post-worthy and what he's paying?
Posted by: jrfukudome | June 22, 2008 at 07:01 PM
Man after years of drafting high the Rays are finaly gearing up for contention. But I'm rooting for them all the way. Until they play the A's.
Posted by: AriGoldisaG | June 22, 2008 at 07:27 PM
on the topic of post-worthy material, i check the site probably 5 times a day at least, even on the slow weekends. i get more (and better) baseball news from this site than from any other outlet. for me, any news is good news. i appreciate anything the weekend guys bring to the table, especially because there is so little to work with. i wouldnt know Price was promoted today unless i read it here. thanks Steve, and everyone else. you guys do a heck of a job.

I was just thinking about a half hour ago about when the new site was going to come up, and bam! Love it, Tim. Keep up the great work!
Posted by: PureDomination | June 22, 2008 at 09:29 PM
Thanks! Once it is 100% done (hour or two) I will throw up a post so people can give feedback on the new design.

"Hey guys, why don't you let Tim worry about what's post-worthy and what he's paying?"
For real. If you dont like something that is posted, instead of wasting time telling people what is important enough to post and what isn't, how bout just shutting up and not opening this section if you don't care? People will always find something to bitch about.
As for the new layout, it would be cool if there were some kind of option of keeping the old layout or choosing the new one, like they did with myspace a while back. I always loved the white on black. It is not something that would prevent me from coming back here or anything, but it would just be a cool option to have.
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 22, 2008 at 10:01 PM
Tim, can you please make a button where you can cange it back to the white on black. I like it better that way.
Posted by: Joe | June 22, 2008 at 10:20 PM
I don't see what people are complaining about...wouldn't you like to hear everything about the sport as soon as it happens? And besides that, this has to deal w/ Price's big league clock which means someone from the Rays could be moved to make space and also has to deal with Price's contract in general

Woooooooooaaaaaaaaah site changeeeeeeeeeeees! ZOMG!
Posted by: morandjp | June 22, 2008 at 11:08 PM
I'm not a frequent poster, but visit the site a bunch every day...
Have to say, I love the revamp and new logo, but the white background on this style of posting looks terrible - like any plain old, run of the mill, part time blog site and that is certainly not what this is. Go back to black!
Posted by: marlin1331 | June 22, 2008 at 11:17 PM
I love the whole setup just wish the comments were centered on the site it's a bit awkward but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | June 22, 2008 at 11:21 PM
BACK TO BLACK!!!
Seriously, the set up is nice, but it's actually harder to read the black on white, rather than the white on black...
Posted by: Hyro | June 22, 2008 at 11:27 PM
I tried to post earlier, but type key was messing with me. All the people who log in to comment, and only post crap criticizing the topic, why bother? If you think it is a stupid topic, then shut up and go somewhere else, don't even open it. I am sure that there are lots of people who don't find the tracking of David Price as meaningless information.
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 23, 2008 at 01:56 AM
Man, I thought I loved this website, but some of you guys are acting like you just busted your girl sleeping with your best friend.
I'm guessing people are still just sour about the new layout when they piss and moan about news such as this. To question whether or not David Price's path to the bigs is postworthy or not really reveals your lack of love for the game. As a NL fan, even I love reading about top prospects in the junior circuit.
Either way, I view every new post as an opportunity to blast someone in the comments section, so the more the merrier I say!

David Price
#1 Pick in 07 Draft,
LH who throws 97 mph,
Devastating Slider,
able to locate pitches,
will be the ace of the Rays inside of 18 months,
could have an impact in 08 post season
Yea, why would anyone want to know about his rise to the bigs.
