| Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Sabathia, Durham, Bedard »

Time to delve into Jayson Stark's latest column for ESPN.
- The Rockies are 9.5 games out, and if they slip further over the next month they may trade Matt Holliday or Garrett Atkins (not both). If so, they'd be flexible on the number and ages of the players they'd want in return. Aaron Cook will not be traded.
- Stark talked to one team official who speculated the Pirates could keep their outfield intact in the name of a run at .500. Presumably they'd be doing this for the fans, but diehards would probably prefer a sweet bounty of young players and a better '09 draft pick.
- As we've discussed here, the Mariners don't have much to trade. Raul Ibanez has decent value, but Erik Bedard will probably stay put unless a new GM is installed.
- The White Sox "made the most serious run yet" at Kenny Lofton, but he they balked at his $2.5-3MM asking price. Kenny...c'mon. We want to see you in baseball this year.
- Orlando Hudson might've signed below-market to play in New York, but the Mets signed Luis Castillo through 2011. How about the other New York team, in the event of a Robinson Cano trade?
- One AL exec believes the Royals would be best served to trade Zack Greinke now, and get an influx of even younger talent.
Greinke should not be moved, that must be Bavasi. Unless they think he is going to have a mental breakdown they got a young kid with filthy stuff and a disenfrachised fan base. Its not like they have a ton of blue chip pitching prospects on the horizon, Greinke is the most hopeful thing they got, more so then Hochevar.

-Holliday should be traded
-Aaron Cook is arguably the best Rockies starting pitcher ever(just throwing it out there; this guy is valuable and can't be traded)
-Atkins should be traded too, really
-Unless for elite talent and plenty of it, the Royals shouldn't trade Greinke.

i'd be fine with a trade of Greinke to Milwaukee in a package that brings back LaPorta AND Gamel.
The Royals have some stud arms coming up through the minors and one of them, Rosa just got a call up..would love to see him push Meche out in a trade to give us an all-25 and under rotation of: Greinke, Bannister, Hochevar, Davies and Rosa. But if Rosa pushes Greinke out...I will only live with it if we got a MONSTER bat in return.

LaPorta AND Gamel? Don't hold your breath friend. I get what you're saying though, he's worth a lot.

Why would Orlando have takent a discount to play in NY? Doesn't really make sense to me. Besides, Dont think that Castillo's contract will stop the Mets from going after Hudson... Castillo's knees are getting worse everyday and besides, its not like the Mets couldnt eat most of the contract, because some team would be willing to take Castillo for 1-2 million a year. I think the pending FA or Ellis and O-Dog is why most people were pissed and confused about Luis Castillo getting 4 years. But my feeling is the 4 years gaurunteed the Mets that they got their guy for atleast 2008 and then they would see what happened after that. To put it in persepctive, eating Castillo's contract wpould cost less then eating Delgado's 08 contract, so it is not out of the question.

I also agree with palehose, Aaron Cook is a stud. He is a legit number 2 pitcher, he reminds me a bit of Hudson, without as many K's, and I was dying for the Mets to move on him the last couple of years. He is the kind of pitcher every team needs. He is a horse, he doesnt take himself out of games, he is incredibly efficient, fairly young, good control, groundball machine. Plus he also kills the Mets so I have that in the back of my brain. Somebody asked the other day who is one of the better pitchers in the league that gets no recognition, and Aaron Cook would be the first guy who comes to mind.

"i'd be fine with a trade of Greinke to Milwaukee in a package that brings back LaPorta AND Gamel."
What are you smoking and where can I find some?

let me re-iterate. when i say "package", i mean Greinke + more, be it a major leaguer or a couple prospects.

I dont know a lot about Greinke, i know hes young, has nasty stuff, and could be a great pitcher, but even in a package, he isn't worth Laporta and Gamel. Gamel is leading AA ball in batting average and OPS, Laporta is like 4th in AA ball in batting average, and he is leading AA ball in home runs. Laporta is probably the better of the two players overall, and would fit in KC as a DH, but if the brewers were to give up a young talent like Laporta, they would seek Greinke and a package of prospects. As for Gamel, he is very shaky on defense, but KC would be much more likely to get him closer to straight up for Greinke.

Grienke is being seriously underrated. Grienke isn't some top pitching prospect, this is an established big league starter. This guy has the stuff of an ace, and at 24 is already a good 2-3 starter. He's worth far more than Mat Gamel straight up, Gamel can't field anywhere, but something like Grienke, Gathright and a low level prospect would be enough for both of them. A rotation led by Grienke, Gallardo, and Manny Parra would be unreal.

"Grienke isn't some top pitching prospect, this is an established big league starter." True, and he's YOUNGER than Hochevar!

If Greinke's available, I want the Cubs in on that. When Greinke is on, he's just as filthy as Lincecum.
Felix Pie and Ronny Cedeno, would that be enough?
(I keed, I keed).....Cubs don't have the prospects to get Zack, unfortunately.

By the way, LaPorta does not fit in KC as a DH because that's Butler's spot.

1B baby
Posted by: gogopalehose | June 13, 2008 at 03:48 PM
The managment in KC obviously wouldnt see him at 1b, because you guys just drafted Eric Hosmer.
Posted by: glover28 | June 13, 2008 at 05:54 PM
gogo thats Ross Gload's spot lmao...kidding of course

As a diehard Pirate fan (OK you can stop laughing) I would much rather them trade the veterans now and pick up the pieces needed to secure the future. Bay's value is about as good as it gets right now and Nady should be considered in the All Star vote.

Greinke is underrated?
2008 ... 3.77ERA / 1.29WHIP
Career ... 4.50ERA / 1.35WHIP
He's had one year of 175+ IP - he posted a 5.80 ERA that year.
Greinke is still young and has a ton of promise. I just think he has a long way to go before he should be mentioned as being a young elite pitcher. There's about 10 guys his age that I would take in a heart beat before I would take him.
Throw in his past mental problems and I would NOT give up the farm to land him.

I would love Grienke in Milwaukee
but Laporta and Gamel is to much
I dont know much about the Royals and thier Farm system...or talent but The Brewers have top prospects all over that Double A team
I would do a Laporta OR Gamel and then one of the following...Hardy, Salome, Lucroy, Brantely, Gillispe
Laporta can play First and Corner OF
Gamel can play 3rd/OF/1b
Lucroy is a High A Catcher that has good Defense and Decent bat
Salome is a Double A Catcher that has the BAT..and is working on D
Brantley and Gillispe are OFers at the Double A level as well...
I say trade Hardy because the Brewers have a top SS prospect in Alicides Escobar
Personally I would do a Laporta + Hardy or
Laporta + Lucroy deal
If its a Laporta and Salome deal I would want something else back with Grienke
