While Fuentes would be sweet...anytime you have half the teams in baseball wanting a guy and you are one of them, but have a below average system...it means you are gonna have to sell the farm.
In order for the Cubs to beat all other offers, they are going to have to give up a whole lot. Doesn't make any sense. Eyre and Cotts are going to have to get the job done from the left side...
I do wish they would go for a back end of the bullpen guy, but I don't think it needs to be a lefty. I'm fine with them easing Marmol's role a bit by giving a little bit more innings to Howry and maybe even Cotts. They need to make sure Howry builds up his stats anyway so he maintains his type A status...

I'm not sure Hendry needs to make any more trades. We certainly haven't a shot at Fuentes, anyway.
We really have all the bases covered. When Soriano comes back, Johnson will go back to platooning with Edmonds and spelling Fukudome and Soriano every once in a while, and you also have Hoffpauir and Pie if somebody else goes down. Outfield is covered.
In the infield, there are few, if any holes. DeRosa and Theriot are having All-Star-caliber seasons, and the corners are locked down. Catcher is covered for the next *decade*.
The bullpen is strong, as well. Marmol's on the comeback trail hopefully, and with the addition of Gaudin and Howry's improvements, he won't be worked as much.
If there is any trade that needs to be made, I think it should be for:
A) Outfielder with some pop that can play center, incase one of Johnson or Edmonds goes down and Pie still can't play. Crisp?
B) Bullpen arm that can be used in late relief, to additionally spell Marmol.

bench? Tim if you're there, who would be a bench player? Can u give me names?
Posted by: bleedcubbie | July 17, 2008 at 05:25 PM
"A) Outfielder with some pop that can play center, incase one of Johnson or Edmonds goes down and Pie still can't play. Crisp?"
Lofton makes more sense.

If you want some pop than Coco Crisp isn't exactly a sweet option.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 17, 2008 at 06:09 PM
Pablo Ozuna has proven to be a decent bench bat in the past.
As far as Greene goes I have no interest if I am most teams. Greene has power but his hitting tops out at like 260.

If this happened, you just put Fukudome in Center and bring up Hoffpauir. Not long term...but certainly better than giving up prospects. Also, Pie is hitting .413 in his last 10 games, and if you take away his horrendous month of May, he his hitting around .315/.380/.500. With his very good defense, he is a pretty good option if you have to go that way...
Also, Howry's last three years show his pre-allstar break ERA at 3.90, and his post break ERA at 1.99. He should be just fine.
I'm absolutely fine with Hendry standing pat.

"Greene has power but his hitting tops out at like 260."
He would be thrilled right now to be batting .260...

Coco Crisp and pop, I know his name is also a cereal but it isn't Rice Krispies.
Posted by: Meoveryouok | July 17, 2008 at 06:43 PM
By the way, every contending team could use another legitimate late inning reliever..

Barry Bonds please. Yes, a knucklehead he is...yes, an OBP machine he is. What to do with Barry and Alfonso, i know...but it is quite the healthy decision to have to make. (Better than the early 90s version of Dwight Smith and Jerome Walton! :))
Posted by: carl | July 17, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Yes, it's time for Bonds on the bench. He's cheap, league minimum, no lost players. He would walk 75 times for the rest of the season and he would love the right field wall. Forget about the OF, only a bench guy. Ward left and Bonds right. Wow, even though Bonds is a jerk, but lets win this year!!!
Posted by: scubathreefifty | July 17, 2008 at 08:06 PM
Scuba just to correct you Bonds is "Left" handed...
Posted by: uww1 | July 17, 2008 at 08:31 PM
What about this scenerio? Cubs could pick up Ichiro. I dont know how cheap he is but he just signed a 5 yr 100 mil contract, so he couldnt be that expensive as for the Mariners he could just be a salary dump. I could start in CF. I know he is left handed with edmonds but this would give up 4 quality outfielders we could rotate the rest of the season to rest (this would be good for Soriano). Imagine Ichiro and Fukudome leading off a game.
Posted by: uww1 | July 17, 2008 at 08:34 PM
Also, are the O's going to be shopping Sherrill? I think is going to cost a lot.
Posted by: uww1 | July 17, 2008 at 08:35 PM
To the Comment I made above on Ichiro, I never finished Irchiro's name, I put that I could start (that is not true) HA... Ichiro could start in CF.
Posted by: uww1 | July 17, 2008 at 09:20 PM
3 Things...
First, the Ms are not going to trade Ichiro. The guy is the face of their franchise. They are having a failed season though that does not mean they are going to dismantle their club.
Second, Ichiro would not be cheap. Ichiro is an MVP caliber player. Gold Glove, Silver slugger batting champion. The mariners do not need to sell. He is signed to a market price contract. If he were to be available, a team would not get him without unloading the farm. Frankly, the cubs dont have anyone to center a package around in their farm club. The harden deal was a shocker but you shouldnt expect lightning to strike twice, especially since Ichiro would require a lot more. If the Ms were to trade him, they would lose the interest of the asian population base in seattle.
Third, Ichiro would not be a salary dump. Though I dont have any hard figures to support this, Id wager the Mariners recieve more money from japanese sponsors on an annual basis than they pay him.
Posted by: LetsGoOs | July 17, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Actually I see the M's trading Ichiro. He is signed way above market value. 20 mil a year for the next 5 years? He is not a HR hitter...There are rumors going around now that he could quickly become available.
Posted by: uww1 | July 17, 2008 at 10:14 PM
good point on high-profile asian players. the additional marketing and merchandising pays their salaries as long as they are on high profile teams and do reasonably well. Fukudome has been just Ok as a Cubs RFer, but a wildly profitable signing even with his $12m/yr contract.
Posted by: spc | July 17, 2008 at 10:38 PM
I just don't get it obviously because it seems like people associate the Cubs with every single OF player on earth. How many pieces do the Cubs need to win this damn championship. It seems like they would rather take chances on Fossils like Edmonds instead of potentially useful cheap players like oh wait for it.....Felix Pie. A year ago Pie was all the rave, then the team trots him out for a small sample size and gives up on him. The Cubs are ridiculous they are looking for OF help and they got Murton, and Pie. It is the same crap with the Brewers they sign Mike Cameron before they give Tony Gwynn Jr a legitimate shot. You would think with the great lineups some teams have that they could afford to play rookies instead of selling them off for rentals. Not to mention I don't think Ichiro is going anywhere because then what would Mariners fans even bother going to the game to see other then King Felix.
Posted by: manny24 | July 17, 2008 at 10:47 PM
The Cubs aren't interested in any outfielders...you are just hearing fans talk.
"You would think with the great lineups some teams have that they could afford to play rookies instead of selling them off for rentals."
Soto, Theriot, Fontenot, Rich Hill, Marshall, Wuertz, Zambrano...
All these guys are from the Cubs system and all have had a bunch of chances to contribute. I agree that Pie has been handled wrong...but it starts well before he got to the bigs. He was treated the same way Corey Patterson was...a guy that could have been an awesome player and they let them develop long swings and don't teach plate discipline and patience. I don't know what it is about Pie and Patterson...but they needed to START with patience and let the other stuff come. They started with the other stuff and apparently just hoped the patience would come. Sometimes it does (Soto, Theriot)...but I certainly don't credit their farm for it.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | July 17, 2008 at 11:54 PM
Also...Gallagher was getting a bunch of time and he was just the price we had to pay for Harden, who is a legit ACE when healthy.
Also, he isn't a rental...we have him next year too, and our window is about 3 or 4 years for the current roster. They are going for it now, and its probably the best chance they have had to do it since I can remember. Making that trade is the right thing to do for the Cubs, and I love Gallagher. But if you are the Cubs...you gotta make that move. You just have to.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | July 17, 2008 at 11:59 PM
ok Barry Bonds will never be on the cubs! thatd be a joke.
Barry bonds is not gonna play left field wed be better off putting zambrono in left field..
and if barry bonds comes back pitchers are not just going to start walking him people need to see if he can hit first.. hes not just gonna come off sitting out nearly the whole year and start hitting homers.
so his obp wont be that high until he prooves he can hit..
GO CUBS! lol

I agree that Zambrano is a better lefty hitter than Bonds.
There is no collusion against Barry Bonds here. I think baseball reasons are the primary reasons Bonds has no job. Everyone is fantasizing of Barry Bonds 2-3 years ago.
He was in decline last year.
The Giants had enough. He is more & more likely to sustain injuries. I know he could still get on base, but at .390?? He's older, out of practice, he'd swing & miss a lot more, HRs down, avg down, and... probably would have less performance-enhancing drugs in his system now.
Do they have a test for HGH...yet? How about tracking head size measurements of players - might be a good test! :)

Oh, and he can't run!
Posted by: Cubs World Champs please B4 I die | July 18, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Aduncaroo I know what your saying with Harden but the OF comment sort of referred to the past two seasons. The cubs have a legitimate OF so why Crisp is being brought up is beyond me. Besides Crisp is not the solver of any problems hes on my team and hes barley more useful than Lugo.
Posted by: manny24 | July 18, 2008 at 11:58 AM
The cubs have a crazy team, I really cant think of anything they need more than some cheap depth. I think we should all lock down the cubs deadline rumors because I don't think any are going to happen.
Posted by: manny24 | July 18, 2008 at 12:00 PM
manny24 you don't know Jim Hendry. The man doesn't quit.

"The cubs have a legitimate OF so why Crisp is being brought up is beyond me"
The cubs haven't brought him up since at least the offseason...if at all. Be careful listening to fans talk and assumning it means the cubs are interested in whomever they bring up.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | July 18, 2008 at 04:08 PM
Not that this will happen, but the Cubs should try to trade Lee and/or Ramirez (plus a lesser player), maybe in a three way trade, to get a more consistent offensive player like a Matt Holliday or whomever (and Hoffpauir could play first--he'd be good if they'd give him a chance). Lee and Ramirez spend a hell of a lot more time "struggling" than getting "hot" and doing what they're paid to do (and can anybody remember the last time Lee hit a homerun--hint, the Cubs/Sox series at Wrigley). Lee and Ramirez are the biggest buzz-kills of the team, and if I see Lee GIDP again I'm gonna explode. Sure Ramirez is a clutch player, but maybe if he was more consistent in non-clutch situations, the Cubs wouldn't have to always "cram" in the late innings to score runs. Of course, many of these probs could be ameliorated if Pinella changed his lineup, and started to put Soriano (the true slugger of the team) in the 3 spot, but Pinella is too set in his stubborn, archaic ways to do this.

Listen the team is fine as it is .Maybe we can use some lefthanded hitter besides fukudome but the offense is lethal along with the pitching.cubs are like 53-10 when they score 4 runs or more.if I was hendry i would go after any availible arms as possible Authur Rhodes,Feuntes..ect Jim Edmonds is money in the playoffs If Jim Hendry is smart he would be looking for another bat on the bench or a starting player even a maybe a brian roberts or Aubrey Huff would be nice in RF alternate Fukdome and edmonds.and spell Soriano from time to time .But if nothing else go after the arms for the pen.
