« Yankees-Pirates Deal Reconfigured | Main | Odds and Ends: Mets, Tigers, Rays, Nats »
Update 1:23 pm: The AP is reporting the deal is done pending approval by the commissioner's office.
--
A source close to the deal is telling Jayson Stark that the Dodgers are on the verge of acquiring Casey Blake from the Indians.
The Indians would get minor-league catcher Carlos Santana, right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan and cash in return.
Blake became one of the most coveted players that can play the outfield after the Yankees traded for Xavier Nady. Other teams that were rumored to be in the mix to land Blake were the Mets, Rays and Phillies.

Man I hate the Dodgers. Please move Andy LaRoche. Give him a chance somewhere. Go to the Twins and offer him for Anthony Swarzak or something.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 26, 2008 at 11:26 AM
At least they're not mortgaging anyone major. Meloan was a decent releiver in the minors. He just started to start this year at AAA. Blake won't do much though, probably a set up to make another trade: LaRoche for???
Posted by: Royboy | July 26, 2008 at 11:36 AM
The Village Idiot strikes again!
If a mediocre veteran is available, Neddy Colletti is in, two good propects or not!
Wow!
I wonder if Colletti can destroy the entire organization before he is fired!
Posted by: MikeClarke | July 26, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Yeah I was just thinking that maybe this could lead to a Huston Street deal. The A's will likely soon be in need of a third baseman (unless Cardenas is moved there), and the Dodgers were considered a key suitor for Street.
The A's would have to listen if the Dodgers came in offering LaRoche and some other guys.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 26, 2008 at 11:38 AM
This makes as much sense as signing Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones.
Posted by: icedrake523 | July 26, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Heres an idea for the Dodgers, deal LaRoche and Lowe for Bay or Holliday.
Posted by: yanks26ngoin | July 26, 2008 at 11:43 AM
The Dodgers had already officially put the kibosh on trading LaRoche for Street (see previous thread). Though of course denial doesn't always prove it won't happen!
I don't thnk adding Blake is a bad move, it gives them more depth on offense which they're sorely lacking. I think giving up Meloan is totally fine. However if it is Santana I think they'll regret that move , at least in a couple of years they will. The guy is a great young hitter.
Posted by: Craig Phillips | July 26, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Yanks, I'd do either of those deals in a second but I doubt the Pirates or Rockies would.
Posted by: Craig Phillips | July 26, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Young hitters come along pretty often. I like this deal. Blake is a solid player. I do think LaRoche will be the centerpiece for another move.
Posted by: OedipusSC | July 26, 2008 at 11:49 AM
Yeah the Pirates/Rockies are going to want back elite young talent for Bay/Holliday, not a rental veteran pitcher and good 3B prospect. Replace Lowe with Kershaw. I know, I wouldn't do that either, but that's what Pittsburgh or Colorado would likely want.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 26, 2008 at 11:51 AM
I don't see why the Dodgers would need Blake. I guess they could use him at 3rd and replace DeWitt, but when are they finally going to use LaRoche?
They already have good 1st baseman and right fielder in Loney and Either.
I hope Blake ends up playing right field in Tampa, because they could really use a right handed bat.

As a lifelong Dodgers fan and season ticket holder, I am starting to question if Ned Colletti still has Giants love and is trying to ruin the Dodgers organization.
This is just another example of overpaying for a mediocre veteran. While other teams are out there trading two - four B-C level prospects to land their rentals, Ned decides to send two Grade A prospects. Wow he is a genius.
Meloan was converted to a starter this year, but was on track to become a top set-up man within the next couple years. Carlos Santana is currently the best hitter in the Dodgers whole farm system, and someone with some serious power....Something the Dodgers have been in dire need of for years now. These are the types of prospects where you could throw in one more like a Blake Dewitt and get a middle of the order bat like Jason Bay. Instead we get a 2 month rental of a 35 year old # 6 hitter, who if we are lucky will help us win one more game than platooning LaRoche/Dewitt.
Ned you are a genius. Fire Ned Colletti NOW Frank!!! before its too late

Blake's an outfielder ? Man this site has really gone downhill this year, must have made too much money and become complacent.
Posted by: kinsler5 | July 26, 2008 at 12:09 PM
With the uncertainty of 1b, 3b and both corner OF spots, I'm surprised Shapiro traded Blake. Are Santana / Meloan so good that Shapiro couldn't pass the deal up?
Posted by: jessethebody | July 26, 2008 at 12:12 PM
the deal is official via jon heyman. Way to update the site timmy
Posted by: derek | July 26, 2008 at 12:14 PM
Kinsler5:
Maybe they're thinking of the '05 and '06 Blake when he played almost exclusively RF.
Posted by: rangerchick | July 26, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Blake has been playing RF some this year. He has a good arm and adequate range. He is, in fact, competent at all four corners.
Posted by: MickS | July 26, 2008 at 12:20 PM
"Blake's an outfielder ? Man this site has really gone downhill this year, must have made too much money and become complacent."
Uhh Casey Blake was a full time right fielder in 2005 and 2006 when the Indians had Aaron Boone playing third base. He clearly is at least adequate there, and was a solid enough of an option for multiple teams to have been considering him there.
Mayyyyybe you should try looking something up before bashing a site, because you just might end looking up dumb..
Posted by: scribbletone | July 26, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Blake is batting .289 with 11 HR and 58 RBI......
That seems pretty solid to me...
And they got him for cheap too....

"With the uncertainty of 1b, 3b and both corner OF spots, I'm surprised Shapiro traded Blake. Are Santana / Meloan so good that Shapiro couldn't pass the deal up?"
Blake's contract ends next year. The Indians are out of it and will devote this year to watching Garko, Marte, Guitierrez, and Choo to see if they will be good enough for next season.
If we want Blake back, we will just sign him next season.
"Blake's an outfielder ? Man this site has really gone downhill this year, must have made too much money and become complacent."
What are you talking about? Blake plays 3B, 1B, and OF. He even played SS for a few innings this season.
Posted by: the lowercase zach is better | July 26, 2008 at 12:28 PM
The Indians may not have the most solid set for next year, but you have to think that LaPorta will be in left, Grady will be in center and Ben Francisco. The Indians need to try out the young talent they have...not waste it on a 6 million dollar utility guy. I like Blake, but I am not sad to see him go.
Posted by: Adam | July 26, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Kind of sucks though...just means I won't get to see Casey's beard at the game tomorrow...instead I have to be by Marte.
Posted by: Adam | July 26, 2008 at 12:34 PM
The only thing that could make this deal worse is if Blake was an outfielder. Yes, he can arguably still play it competently but it ends there and last time I checked the Dodgers had a few outfielders. I think anyone who read that sentence about Blake and the outfield and did not cringe a little is lying.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 26, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Santana will probablly replace Martinez in a few years. Or mabey Hafner, if he can play first.
.323 AVG, 14 HR, 96 RBI
I don't think Meloan will be good anytime soon. He hasn't performed to well in Triple A.
4.97 ERA, 5-10, 99 SO, 105 IP
The Dodgers need to win right now. So i guess Blake can help them short term.
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | July 26, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Blake is an absolutely solid addition, especially because the Dodgers will be without Delwyn Young for at least 2 weeks. His numbers hjave skyrocketed since his slow start and he is absolutely deadly with RISP, something the Dodgers need desperately. He isn't really a power upgrade, but is the rock solid utility man the Dodgers need. Meloan was getting a bit long in the tooth and Santana had no chance sitting behind Martin.
Posted by: AA | July 26, 2008 at 12:46 PM
I checked the numbers and it is actually worse than I thought. Blake has played 0 INNINGS in the outfield this year. Last year he played all of 7 games there. Yep, I know most teams go after highly coveted players a positions they have yet to play this year.
Posted by: walkoffblast | July 26, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Now that Blake is going to the Dodgers, the outfield talk is silenced because they already have outfielders.
But if he would have went to a team like the Mets or the Rays, i'm pretty sure they would make him play in right field.
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | July 26, 2008 at 12:50 PM
another bat off the market..i guess the phillies figure joe blanton is all they need to get over the hump..i swear man,i hope when gillick goes, amaro and arbuckle go with him
Posted by: GM4aWEEK | July 26, 2008 at 01:00 PM
and i'm not saying casey blake is the answer..but geeze,do something...quit just always being "in the mix" for players!
Posted by: GM4aWEEK | July 26, 2008 at 01:02 PM
I don't think this move necessarily indicates the Dodgers are giving up on LaRoche. But being in the hunt for the AL West title, in spite of a lousy record, I think this is a good move to get a relatively reliable and productive bat at third, since LaRoche has strugged again to seize the opportunity. (.203/.319/.322) Granted this is only a 59 AB sample size, but it's consistent with his numbers over 160 AB in the majors. Torre can still use LaRoche at third from time to time, since Blake can spell Loney at first, and either of the corner outfielders. But Blake is a solid insurance policy for a (gulp) playoff contender.
Posted by: sggutierrez | July 26, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Do you really think it would be that tough for Blake to move back to the outfield? Hell, Greg Norton had played a grand total of about 300 innings in the OF in his career before this season, but he's been adequate out their defensively in the 120+ innings he's played their this year. As long as you have some experience reading fly balls, you'll generally be fine.
Posted by: nixa37 | July 26, 2008 at 01:03 PM
If the Orioles could put Kevin Millar in the outfield last year, I think Blake could handle it if necessary.
Posted by: ChristianTool | July 26, 2008 at 01:07 PM
Blake is a solid addition to a World Series contending team. He's the kind of peace a contender needs to get over the hump.
He is not the kind of player that will boost a sub 500 team competing for a play off spot into serious contention. Luckily it didn't cost much, except maybe Ned's job next year.
Posted by: Meoveryouok | July 26, 2008 at 01:13 PM
I cannot believe I just said peace instead of piece.
Can we please edit????
Posted by: Meoveryouok | July 26, 2008 at 01:13 PM
Hopefully this means that it will be easier for the Orioles to get Laroche and some friends for Sherrill.

"As a lifelong Dodgers fan and season ticket holder, I am starting to question if Ned Colletti still has Giants love and is trying to ruin the Dodgers organization."
There is a reason why we Giants fans refer to yr GM as "Agent Colletti".
Once again, good work Agent Colletti! Good show!

I'm guessing a lot of people who are saying this isn't a big deal don't know who exactly is involved.
Santana's performance probably would have earned him Top 5 billing in the Dodgers' farm system for 2009, and Meloan will probably be converted back to the bullpen where he projected as a setup man.
And for what? So the Dodgers can maybe make the playoffs and probably get swept in the first round? What's the point? Ugh.
Posted by: kensai | July 26, 2008 at 03:37 PM
im not too worried about this, i think the cal league is aiding santanas stats. he decent behind the plate. garbage lancaster pitching shut him down a few weeks ago. meloan is a good bullpen arm. i really thought he would of been pitching in la already at this point, once again his stats are skewed by the home park.

"Santana's performance probably would have earned him Top 5 billing in the Dodgers' farm system for 2009, and Meloan will probably be converted back to the bullpen where he projected as a setup man."
Meanwhile, the Dodgers already have one of, if not the best catcher in baseball and Meloan just doesn't have the value he once did. Further, Blake is the kind of player they have needed all year. A guy who can hit in the clutch and move around the field, and not get injured.
Personally, I think it would have been better to do the Sabathia/Blake/Carroll deal, but this still makes sense in the context of this team.
Posted by: AA | July 26, 2008 at 05:21 PM
"Hopefully this means that it will be easier for the Orioles to get Laroche and some friends for Sherrill."
Dodgers have no more need for George Sherrill than Jackie Sherrill. They have two of the best (if unhearalded) bullpen lefties in Kuo and Beimel.

I don't think the Dodgers gave up much in Meloan. Kershaw, Elbert and McDonald are all more likely to becoming reliable big league pitchers. I really like Santana, but with Martin and Lucas May, they aren't in need of a young catcher. If they traded Santana next year, they night have received more, but it's impossible to say.
Casey Blake is a decent 3B with a solid OPS. LaRoche and DeWitt have been struggling at the plate. The Dodgers MIGHT have openings at 2B, 3B and SS next year so both of them, along with Tony Abreu, Chin-Lung Hu and Ivan DeJesus Jr will have a shot at starting in 2009.
They will also get some draft picks if they don't re-sign Blake, Lowe, Furcal and Garciaparra. So I think the Dodgers have a bright future.
Posted by: Sovereignty | July 26, 2008 at 07:13 PM
Coming from an Indians fan, Blake is 35 years old. The tribe supposedly got a real stud in Santana. 94 RBI in A+, granted it is A+ ball, is still impressive. Meloan looks like he can be a big strikeout guy in the near future. I am not sad to see Blake go. Good luck to the Dodgers, you got a real class act in Blake.
Posted by: Pronkfan789 | July 26, 2008 at 10:14 PM
A solid, practical move by Colletti... I like it.
We get a modestly solid, veteran bat at third, who also has a little pop, without giving up very much at all. Perfect.
I think it's great that his contract is up at the end of the year, it gives the Dodgers options. It allows DeWitt to develop for another year at AAA (I think he needs it, he's really young), and a year for the Dodgers to observe Blake and see if he gels in the lineup. At the end of the year, they could either re-sign Blake and have an improved prospect chip in DeWitt, or they can bring DeWitt up, with another year of minor league development under his belt.
It's my intuition that this move means that the Dodgers intend to trade Laroche.
Posted by: DodgersLBC | July 26, 2008 at 10:23 PM
"Meanwhile, the Dodgers already have one of, if not the best catcher in baseball and Meloan just doesn't have the value he once did."
Yeah, but that's not the point. The Dodgers have a great starting rotation right now, does that mean it's fine to trade Kershaw? No. It's like having Ryan Howard behind Jim Thome a couple years ago in Philly. You don't just deal away Howard for Ty Wiggington because you don't "need" Howard. If you do, you damn well better get value.
The fact is, he was one of the best catching prospects in the majors, and the Dodgers traded him away for a 34 year old two month rental on a sub .500 team. It's not like this is the Red Sox needing a player to get over the hump.
I don't understand what's so hard to get about how pointless this move is. For all of you supporting the move, Blake better lead the Dodgers deep into October, or else it only hurts the Dodgers in the long-run.
Then again, hey, who cares about keeping the young guys and maybe dealing them away for good value, right? Deal them all away for above average aging veterans with expiring contracts.
Sounds like a good operating plan to me. The same one that has led the Dodgers to their outstanding record in the past 20 years.
Posted by: kensai | July 26, 2008 at 11:26 PM

FireNed, I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. They haven't gotten rid of any of their young nucleus core. And while I agree with the philosophy of letting the young core develop and play, I wouldn't expect a major league franchise to keep ALL of their prospects.
The blue desperately needed another solid bat in the lineup, and DeWitt needs more time learning how to hit a major league breaking ball. AND in addition to this, Blake is versatile. If Garciaparra goes down, he could very well play a little SS to keep a little pop in the order, without needing to play a weak-hitting Berroa or Maza every day.

santana had no chance with the dodgers. hes 22 in the super hitter friendly cal league.. we didnt give up laroche, so its not all bad. like i said meloan had some good stuff. but we have a good pitching staff, best in the nl era wise. being 21 and loving the dodgers my whole life i know nothing about winning. i think next year we will be the class of the west, not saying much. who was sent down? anybody know?
Posted by: 661folife | July 27, 2008 at 01:09 AM
DodgersLBC-I didn't even expect the Dodgers to keep Santana. The point is, you don't trade your top prospects away for rubbish. Matt LaPorta was blocked in Milwaukee, so they traded him away. Okay fine, but who did they get? C.C. Sabathia. Who did the Dodgers get? Casey Blake?!
No, Santana isn't at LaPorta's level as a prospect yet, but he could have been within the next year, that's my point. You don't just dump guys because you have better players entrenched at the major league level.
Why do the Dodgers need Blake's versatility? Loney is at first, and they already have 4 outfielders for 3 spots. So he's a 3rd baseman that might take even more playing time away from Loney/Kemp/Ethier, which makes me sick.
dodgerblue8787-Yes, I realize that he's in a hitter's league. However, his plate discipline was there from before, and you don't just magically learn that skill because it's a hitter's league. Also, comparing Santana to his peers is one of the key things for league normalization, right? Well, Santana was at the top of most of the league's leaderboards...as a catcher. So even in a hitting friendly league, he was the class of it.
http://minors.baseball-reference.com/bat_leaders.cgi?yid=2008&lvl=A%2B&lid=&sort=OPS
And that Matt Wieters guy that's above him? By far the #1 catching prospect in the majors. He's untouchable from the O's and is the same age as Santana. Imagine trading him for Casey Blake, doubtful.
I wasn't old enough to remember 1988 either, but I do remember winning only 1 playoff game since then. Casey Blake isn't going to make this team from mediocre to World Series contender, so why do you think this changes anything?
I'll be glad to eat my words if Casey Blake hits 25 HR in the next two months and leads the Dodgers to a World Series win. I'm just not holding my breath.
Posted by: kensai | July 27, 2008 at 06:30 AM

Santana has absolutely zero chance to make the Dodgers as a catcher, namely because the Dodgers' best player is their catcher. Second, guess what position they were projecting him to play? That's right, the outfield, where the Dodgers already have a crowd. Add to that, he had a terrible year last year at Great Lakes, so who knows what he will become. Blake is a known commodity who brings tools, extra power and hitting with RISP, the Dodgers needed.
"I wasn't old enough to remember 1988 either"
I am actually old enough to remember 1988, and that team actually looked a lot like this one, though no one on this team has pitched the way Hershiser did that year.
"Casey Blake isn't going to make this team from mediocre to World Series contender, so why do you think this changes anything?"
What Blake does is bring some consistency to this team, which it hasn't gotten out of anyone but Martin, Loney and 1 month of Furcal.
