That Choi for Lee trade sticks out like a sore thumb. All Choi was good for was all but ruining Scott Rolen's chance of ever hitting more than 10 homeruns a season ever again.
Did I miss the Aramis Ramirez trade, both of those have put the cubs where they are today.

Best trade: Aramis Ramirez/Kenny Lofton for virtually nothing.
Worst trades: Giving up Dontrell Willis for Matt Clement
For some reason letting Josh Hamilton go for cash??? What happened there?

if im not mistaken the cubs had no intent on taking josh hamilton in the rule 5 draft but the reds wanted to make sure they got him so they just worked our a deal where they paid the cubs to take him for them to make sure they got him

the hamilton thing has been discussed hundreds of times.. people just dont understand that the cubs had no interest in him, it was a pre-arranged move with the reds to pick up a free $250,000... why not do it?!?!
hendry has made some of the best trades of this decade, period.

Wish Hendry had been interested in taking and keeping Hamilton. Oh well, it's hard to look back on something like that.
He might not have survived in a bigger city like Chicago that first year.
I'm glad for Josh. Just wish he were wearing Cubbie blue.

I have to say I am very impressed with that entire list. I think Willis is/was a flash-in-the-pan type player and no one, even the Marlins expected him to do what he did those 2 years. This is the real Dontrelle.
I think the one trade that sticks out just as much as the ARam and Lee trades is the Hundley for Grudz and Karros. People forget how bad Hundley was and how much worse that contract Hendry dealt was. Plus Grudz and Karros were solid pieces in the 2003 run. Hendry is one of the more underrated GMs.

Everybody forgetting the 3 pitchers he gave up for Juan "Noodle Arm" Pierre?
Nolasco sure would be nice in the rotation at this point.

yea Josh Hamilton is the man. Hopefully he will stay on the right road..he is a great player..
wish he was a cub

hindsight is 20/20 on Josh Hamilton. That guy is a huge risk and if he doesn't turn himself around, he is not a great character guy. I don't see that as a terrible move.

The 12/4/2007 trade by Hendry with Atlanta was with Frank Wren, not John Schuerholz.

"This is the real Dontrelle."
Completely wrong. The idiot pitching coach down in Fla started to alter Dontrelle's delivery to plate. He tried to slow down his mechanics to become more "balanced." Kind of like what the idiot pitching coach over in detroit did to verlander in the early part of this year. Tried to make him more "balanced." The hardest thing for a pitching coach to do is leave a pitcher alone. Luckily SF is leaving Lincecum alone.

Unbelievable, the incredible trades that made possible the 2003 run (5 outs from the World Series): acquiring for almost nothing: Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, Damian Miller, Randall Simon, UNLOADING Todd Hundley and turning that bum into Eric Karros & Mark Grudzelanek (How did he do that?!?) He even turned Sammy Sosa into Mike Fontenot, who is an important part of this club now. Least favorite: Juan Pierre (but the idea was good), Maddux for Cezar Izturis? (Yikes!) & Steve Trachsel (What was he thinking?) Overall, Hendry has done a mind-boggling great job! Can't wait to see what rabbit(s) he can pull out of his hat this month! Go Jim!

BTW, Jim, I would still take Maddux as my fifth starter, on ANY club. But please get us a good #2 (knowing you and your bag of tricks, maybe a sleeper #1?)
Thank you so much,
Die Hard Cubs Fan.

I can't believe threads devoted to things not Chicago related in the least can generate 100+ Cubs prospects for superstars trade proposals, but an actual posting about the GM of the Cubs trade history is kind of boring.

how about getting jose ceda for a guy who wouldn't even play another full season in todd walker? that's a big-time steal in my mind along with the others that everyone else already mentioned.
Posted by: jacklaf | July 08, 2008 at 09:28 AM
I agree, getting Ceda for literally nothing is pretty amazing to me. I think he is under-rated, and takes a bunch of crap from a lot of people who are jealous of the payroll. Either way, I think he is one of the best trading GMs in the game. Lee for Choi?? Really? Ceda for Walker? Aramis for nothing?

I was perusing Ballhype and I found a good breakdown of Hendry's trade history, analyzing each of the past trades(at least semi major to major ones) on this blog "Sharapova's Thigh". Good read:
