Manny Ramirez Rumors: Thursday

3:26pm: Many people are emailing saying Jon Heyman is reporting Manny to the Dodgers.

3:08pm: Aaaaaand...it's dead again.

3:02pm: Rosenthal stirs things up: the three-headed Manny-Bay-Hermida deal is back on.

2:46pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the three-way is dead, while the Dodgers are in play.  Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe says to count out the Dodgers on Manny.  Guess these guys aren't cube-mates.

1:31pm: Heyman says the Dodgers are back in the mix for Manny but the Marlins aren't out of it.

1:17pm: Nick Cafardo doesn't buy the "dead" talk.  However, the Pirates may have turned away from the Boston-Florida scenario for Bay.  The Rays are still a possibility for him.

12:56pm: Rosenthal's hearing this thing is dead.

11:49am: Rosenthal has a mixed opinion, with one source advising caution and another saying the deal is "taking off."  Manny is following the ordeal on ESPN.

More links: a Gordon Edes Q&A on the topic, and word from Yahoo's Tim Brown that the Pirates are happy with their end of the deal.

11:46am: Peter Gammons says the three-way Manny deal is close to dead.  It may not make sense for Boston.

11:34am: A deal hasn't been reached, though Manny has consented to a Florida trade.  Jon Heyman considers this a major hurdle cleared.

The Rays appear unlikely to make a trade, by the way.  Perhaps they're cursed by their own loaded farm system.

11:29am: Will Carroll has an update.  The Pirates could back out Bay talks entirely if they don't get what they want.  The Red Sox will continue shopping Manny regardless, with the Dodgers and a mystery team in the mix.  The Dodgers might be willing to part with Matt Kemp.

10:44am: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe agrees - the Pirates' return for Bay may be the holdup.

10:12am: Rosenthal says the three teams have a framework for the major players, but no agreement on the prospects.  The Bucs' return from the Red Sox is the holdup.  Rosenthal says Tucker and Stanton will stay put, by the way.

9:37am: Kovacevic says the Pirates are open to trading Bay to the Red Sox or the Rays.

9:22am: ESPN's Jayson Stark's source has this at 50-50.  The Pirates are insisting on Stanton but the Marlins don't want to give him up.  Grabow coud end up in Florida rather than Boston.  Tucker is in play but not a lock to be moved.

9:10am: Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald has a source saying chances of a deal are "less than 50-50."  Some members of Red Sox front office are not convinced Manny should be traded.  What do you think?  Are they better off with Bay and Grabow or Manny?

7:59am: Scott Miller of CBSSports.com hears that Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton would not be in the deal.  He says it's not done and talks could still collapse.  By the way, the Pirates have tried to acquire Jeremy Hermida in the past.

7:17am: Here's the latest on the Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida three-way deal talks.  At this time, the AP is saying there is no tentative agreement between the Red Sox, Pirates, and Marlins.

This trade will not get done IMO.. Too many prospects, money, and Manny is involved with a clause.

I have no clue what is going on! Tim please post weather you think this deal will happen

The AP can S my D.

idk wat to think of this trade as a marlins fan, i wanna hear the prospects and stuff first, tim wat u think will happen?

LET'S GO (away) MANNY!

U know yesterday they made it seem like it was a done deal....that they were jus waiting to dot the I's and cross the t's.

If were jus waiting on pittsburgh here well hurry up...u gave the yanks a great deal on marte and nady....so do it again.

If were waiting on the sox...for wha I duno cuz its obvious the marlins will take manny and that the sox will pay....they have a lot of prospects and remember bay, grabow, and wilson are signed for next season....I'd think its worth them giving up 2 prospects and after jed playin ss the last few days I say it again....hurry the heck up.

If pitts can't get in......sub pitts for col....instead of bay grabow and wilson.....holliday, fuentes and barnes...

We've only got a few hours to go so what are we gettining for xmas in july gifts or coal???

Fyi we still need bullpen help so stop teasing us w/ manny hoopla and talk arm rumors.

As a Yank fan...this cannot get done soon enough!!

wat about, hermida, jai miller, and ryan tucker for bay and grabow? no sox

its Manny being Miami

Heres an idea, kick the Pirates out of the talks, and do the original Hermida, Stanton and Tucker and another prospect for Manny and someone else like Ellsbury, Pedroia or Papelbum. That'll work me!

yes, no stanton!!!

yanks26ngoin, ellsburry??? no way they give him up, ill take it tho as a marlins fan! :]

You guys are silly. Barnes, I'm sure we'll hear that over and over on sportscenter if this happens.

Here is the link that breaks down the trade and what they know as to what players are involved.

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/content/sports/epaper/2008/07/30/0730ramirez.html

I think this deal will get done by tonight.

This actually seems like a good deal for the Red Sox... sure, Bay isn't as talented a hitter as Manny, but I figured the Red Sox would have a hard time getting a good player in return during this trade-deadline-period. Plus, they could use Grabow.

I like the move for the Marlins; quite a few games out of their division lead, so it's cool to see them add a big bat like Manny that hopefully pushes them closer to the Mets and Phillies.

Pirates... meh. I guess it depends on who the prospects would be.

wat do u mean quite a few games out themainevent? were 1.5 games out! were very much in it, hopefully we get molina and ramirez today and i think we are serious contenders.

The bottom line is that Florida and Boston can make themselves better today by making this trade. Pittsburgh has to get something convincing for tomorrow. Here's hoping that they do not make the trade for anything less than two top ten prospects and a couple of lesser prospects. Without making this trade, both Boston and Florida may not make the play-offs. Pirates don't make the trade, and they have 2 excellent players for next year (and maybe longer). The Aramis Ramirez/ Kenny Lofton trade still haunts Pittsburgh fans. The Marte/Nady trade may rank as a close second. Better no trade than ....

I don't consider either of these two sources to be very credible as far as breaking sports news. It seems that there are a few different deals going around right now.

Kevin Goldstein explained this last night on BP at around midnight. He had Pitt getting Tucker, Stanton, and Hermida with Graboy and Bay going to Boston. I'm guessing there's one more guy going somewhere in this deal, I just don't know who. I think it's still going to go through though.

were not gonna give away stanton, i can feel it. especially not for a rental, i would rather get bay from pit and have no sox........then trade jacobs for molina, put cantu at 1st and bring up mcphearson to play at 3rd.

MY FELLOW SOX FANS! This is a good thing for the sox, however losing manny is going to be HUGE come playoff time. This is a win-win-win for all 3 teams involved though, especially the Red Sox. They replace manny as successfully as you can and pick up a long relief southpaw. If you ask me thats a pretty effective trade. subbing bay for manny in the line-up shouldn't hurt the offensive production too much, especially considering their numbers are so similar this year. Bay is great for the sox too cause he's only 30. same for grabow.

as a Yankee fan.. taking Manny out of the Sox lineup is huge.. get the deal done!

Bay is only 29 and Grabow is anything but long relief he is really a misused lefty specialist just like marte was the problem is the Pirates bullpen is so thin he was forced into a set up role that was over his head oh by the way Sox fans Grabow has a nagging left shoulder problem.

Hopefully Huntingdon walks away..

I am not trading the face of my franchise if Stanton and Tucker aren't involved.

Let the Sox and Marlins try something theirselves and talk to the Rays.

I hate this. I loved watching Manny hit in a Sox uniform and the man is scary in the playoffs. That being said, I guess they don't have a choice, considering Manny's latest comments. I'll be happy with Bay and a solid relief pitcher, but I'm not really sold on Grabow. My head hurts just thinking about this.

Red Sox are best off keeping, ya know, one of the best hitters ever, Manny Ramirez. But still, if this doesn't go down, it's a very very boring trade deadline. Just pull the trigger and see what happens guys!

The team is better with a focused and quiet Manny Ramirez. However, it doesn't look like that is going to happen and the coaches/players seem to finally be done with the Manny Being Manny show. I can't see them walking away from this deal because Manny could quit on them at any time.

If Manny would just shut up and play out the year, the team would most likely decline his option and he can go get a new contract, but all this B.S. he's got coming out of his mouth is just shooting himself in the foot. How does he not realize this?

Should Tucker really be *that* important? Isn't he projected to end up in the pen?

Like a Marlins fan said above, I still think this should end up being a far smaller deal where Bay goes to Florida for Hermida and a prospect. Just makes a lot more sense to cut Boston out, especially on the Florida side.

I don't know that Manny will stay like he is now. Once he gets a little attention for his antics he usually takes them further, and I don't think he'd say/do stuff like the Iran comment or the Farve sign if he didn't think people would see it. If he stays, I see him focusing after the deadline and getting back to business. And I'd like to see him stay, because he's a great hitter and still our best chance at a world series.

Better off with Manny than Bay + Grabow. PLEASE MAKE THE TRADE!!! I used to hate Manny now I love him because we share the same hatred.

Heres my take on the issue, coming from a yankee fan perspective.

The sox should do what ever they can to move this guy. He is a distraction to clubhouse, the fans, and management. the sox have lost 5 of their last 6, coincedence, or is manny really stirring the pot that much. I have to say that manny is a disstraction enough that is affecting their play. Dont get me wrong, im happy the sox are losing, but looking at it as a BASEBALL fan, Manny is causing the sox games.

If they can get grabow and bay, the return is worth it.

How much can the sox put up with, he is embarassing the team, and management.

Deal him while you can!

RSox - Manny = crash and burn

I would prefer to see Manny go to LA for Kemp. Long-term Kemp is going to be a stud and he is very good right now. Supposedly, LA would move Kemp for Manny. If that is the case, that is the best for Boston long-term and it does not hurt as much as many will think for this year:

Pedroia or Ellsbury
Kemp or Pedroia
Ortiz
Youkilis
Drew
Lowell
Lowrie or Kemp
Varitek
Ellsbury or Lowrie

You can't not trade Manny at this point! After everything that has gone down, it's not an option to keep him in Boston.

The Red Sox have really screwed themselves here, they and Manny have both said that they want him out. There is no option to keep him.

What do you think is going to happen if they don't trade him? This guy has zero concern for the team! He might pull himself out of the lineup for a week if he wants, and who's to say he will get in the lineup for the rest of the season?

Haven't we all seen the true Manny? He has no limit to the crap he will pull.

we need to keep manny. i dont care what anyone says he is the best hitter in the game and there is no one out there they can trade for that would even match his numbers in the regular and post season period.

I am inclined to believe that Scot Boras is stirring up discontent in his new client to get him to say some silly things and goad the Sox into trading him or at least declining his option next year, so that he can get a huge multi-year deal with some other team (a prospect that becomes less likely as Manny gets closer to 40)

That Boras wants Manny as a free agent as soon as possible should be reason enough for the Sox to not do it.

"Like a Marlins fan said above, I still think this should end up being a far smaller deal where Bay goes to Florida for Hermida and a prospect"
No way Bay would go to Florida for Hemida and a prospect. The only way I see a direct trade with Bucs/Marlin would be for Hermida plus 2-3 prospects, 1 top level and 2 mid level or 2 top prospects in addition to Hermida.

As a Sox fan, I love this deal (at least, the Will Carroll version. Not because I hate Manny, or think he's a total malcontent. I think that stuff's overblown. No, I think it's a good deal for this year and the future.

I love the people who still think Manny is a .300/.400/.600 hitter and that the Sox will miss his bat. Truth is, he hasn't been a great hitter since 2006. The last two years, he's hit .296/.388/.493 and .299/.398/.529. Bay, on the other hand, is a career .281/.375/.519 hitter, who's matching that almost exactly this year with a .282/.375/.519 line. So basically the same hitter at this point in their careers. And Bay is a better fielder. And is six or seven years younger.

Plus we get a decent left-handed reliever.

Here's the best part: they're both signed through next year, Bay at only $7.5 million, Grabow at some not-yet-decided amount, probably smaller.

Seriously, this is a win-now and win-later deal for the Sox.

They may even be able to sign Bay to an extension this winter at a reasonable discount, considering they'll factor in his one year left on his contract at the reasonable $7.5 million. They may be able to get him for 3-5 years, instead of the huge contracts that will be given out to Tex and Burrell and Dunn. Or they let him go, letting him play his 30s somewhere else, and take the two draft picks.

The ONLY things that worry me about this deal are:

1. Bay's knees. He was significantly worse last year as he played through a knee injury. It's possible he won't be 100% for the remaining year and two months of his contract. On the other hand, Manny has his own injury problems. He's got hamstring issues, plus his own knee problems, and whether the latter is real or faked, it could keep him off the field either way. So that's an injury concern wash.

2. What prospects are the Sox giving up here? If we're talking someone on the level of a Michael Bowden or a Lars Anderson, I'm not so sure about it. Even then, it would probably be worth it for the upgrade, but I'd hate to see young talent go, even if we're getting younger in the process.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. For a more statistical look, check out the quick work done at the Replacement Level Yankees Weblog, here: http://www.replacementlevel.com/index.php/RLYW/replacing_manny_ramirez_with_jason_bay

r the pirates open to trade bay to florida?

Exactly what you said pghman77. This isn't Nady in the midst of a career year and miraculously not injured. Hermida, Stanton and Tucker make it palatable.

FLA Gets: Jason Bay and John Grabow
PIT Gets: Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Tucker, and Jai Miller. Also, will Renyel Pinto go, I really don't like him as a pitcher.

Not Joe Morgan,

Where did you hear that Tucker is projected to end up in the bullpen? He's been a starter his whole career and he was dominant in that role in AA at the age of 21 earlier this season. I haven't followed him closely, but I don't see a reason why he couldn't stick in that role.

The Sox are better off with Bay and Grabow. Manny is causing too much trouble and is not even giving his full effort. The Sox get a viable replacement in Bay and a good lefty reliever in Grabow.

He has been linked to being a future closer.

If Stanton is off limits, Bay should also be..

This guy has been the Pirates best for the last 4 years. Lets not make a trade, just to make a trade.

Miller and Pinto bring nothing to Pittsburgh.

if the marlins dont want to throw in stanton...I suggest they send willingham to the sox and then let the sox send another prospect to pittsburgh....

Re: Tucker, before this season he was projected to be a reliever long-term, but he's improved by leaps and bounds. While it's still possible that relieving is going to be his eventual role, projections have been revised upwards.

were not giving away willingham and hermida elevenhead.

look i'm a die hard sox fan and i really believe that Manny isnt going anywhere at least for the rest of this year. i think it would be stupid on the sox part not to pick up his option but i feel like i'm the only sox fan out there that believes that and that sux

This morning on Sportscenter, Buster Olney cited his sources as saying the Manny deal is at a better-than-50-50 chance of happening.

"Should Tucker really be *that* important? Isn't he projected to end up in the pen?"

The projections I found from googling around the interweb mostly have him projected as at least a #3 starter, possibly even a #2 if he figures out how to pitch and works in some off-speed stuff.

Tucker is definitely a deal-breaker for us Pirate fans. I can sorta understand not getting a frontline A++ pitching prospect for Nady/Marte but for Bay? Uh-uh. He's gotta bring it or no deal.

I do secretly hope this is just the Bucs way of screwing with the Rays and getting them to loosen their iron grip on the Hellickson/Price/Davis trifecta. All we ask is ONE of them. Just one.

Give us one of them plus Ben Zobrist and one other lesser prospect and they can have the Bay/Grabow deal.

Honestly, the Rays would be monumental idiots not to. If they cut off the Sox to Bay, then what do they do? They aren't going to find a better hitter to replace Manny, let alone a new LF and a lefty specialist.

Don't let these teams bend you over Neal!! Stand tall and make them give up the goods or walk away!

The Rosenthal link is OLD news from earlier this morning

Try this instead

http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/archive/2008/07/31/pirates-still-talking-bay-deal.aspx

Nixa,

From BP's Goldstein before this season: "Tucker's secondary offerings still lag well behind his fastball, as his slider tends to flatten out more often than not, and his changeup is rudimentary. Many wonder if he could be far more effective in a bullpen role, believing that he could sit at 97-98 mph if he only had to throw 15-20 pitches per outing."

I probably went a bit too forward; just seems that whenever you see the "fastball only" implications, the guy ends up in the pen.

honestly, i doubt this trade will get done. as a red sox fan, i wouldnt mind this deal at all. manny obviously wouldnt play hard later in the year come playoff time. Besides, Jason Bay's VORP is only about six points lower than Mannys, add in John Grabow who has an ERA under 4, and it probably turns out to be a pretty even deal. I think the red sox will be reluctant to throw in a solid prospect, even a Jed Lowrie or Lars Anderson. And if Florida doesnt want to include Tucker or Stanton, i dont see the Pirates agreeing.

I'd argue that Jack Wilson needs to be sent to Boston as well if this trade does go down. LaRoche and Freddy are hurt, and although he says he doesn't want to be traded, no way will he be happy being the only veteran on a rebuilding team. The Pirates missed their chance last deadline to send Wilson to Detroit for Jair Jurrjens...no way will the return for Jack be as good this year...but he has to go if Bay is traded.

Not Joe Morgan,

Fair enough. If Tucker were a little older, I'd probably be inclined to agree with your initial assessment, but at just 21 years of age, it isn't unreasonable to think that he can further refine his offspeed stuff.

Jack Wilson should go to Boston??!?!?

What are they going to do with Lugo and the 2 years remaining on his contract(at 9M a year)? That just doesn't go away.

cactusbix: If the Bucs are to trade Bay to the Rays, Price/Davis/Hellickson better be in such a deal. Personally, I would love it if NH turned around and broke up the Rays' trifecta for Bay+Grabow. Tucker or another top pitching prospect's gotta be in the mix if the 3-way's getting done.

Polka: Jack Wilson's gotta go. The BoSox have a hole at SS, as do several other teams (*cough* Dodgers *cough*)

If I were the Sox I'd take Bay and Grabow for Manny. Addition by subtraction, plus they've got Bay for another year at much less than they'd have to pay Manny. Cut ties with Manny and add a descent bat and bullpen arm in the process, no brainer.

If jack Wilson also goes to Boston with Bay and Grabow goes to Florida with Manny

The Pirates with not only get
then I would the only way that the Pirates make this deal is if they get not only Hermedia but also one of the untouchables will have to be involved either Tucker or Staton one of the 2 would have to be included and Lowrie and another from Boston like Masterson. And then Florida will have to give up a lower unknown prospect at A ball too.

So

Boston Bay / Wilson
Flordia Manny and Grabow

Pirates Get

Jeremy Hermdia

either Tucker or Staton

a lower prospect from A Ball from Florida

Lowrie and Masterson

Anything less than this and if I'm the Pirates then

Bay goes to the Braves for the 4 Prospects 2 major league ready

Wilson goes to the Dodgers for LaRoche / Hu and another prospect at A ball.

And Grabow goes somewhere else for a couple of prospects maybe the White Sox

America seems to agree with Jayson Stark. FoxSports.com has a poll up and after 127,000+ votes, it's a dead even 50/50% shot.

I'd like to see this deal get done, but if it doesn't I hope Manny picks up and starts playing again. I've seen five year olds run to first faster than Manny has the last couple of days.

"I'd like to see this deal get done, but if it doesn't I hope Manny picks up and starts playing again."

Good luck with that. I think the Sox-Manny relationship is forever ruined. That's why I hope the Pirates really put the screws to the BoSox. They kinda have them over a barrel.

If BOS keeps Manny, he's gonna sulk and half-ass it the rest of the year. Then they won't pick up the option and he'll leave and they'll get nothing for him.

If they trade him to the Marlins directly, Florida doesn't have any bat remotely good enough to fill Manny's void.

The Pirates are the ones taking the most risk here. The Marlins get Manny, who is a known commodity. The Sox get Bay, a young top notch All-Star LFer. We're just getting prospects, who may or may not ever pan out.

In that case, they better damn well be high end prospects. And so far I'm not hearing any names which really thrill me coming our way.

I haven't responded at all but have been reading this thread...there is NO WAY what baseballnuts there suggest is going to happen.

2 top 100 spects for Wilson? Oh and a 3rd to boot?

4 spects for Bay 2 of which are fringe top 100?

I know this sort of decides the Pirates fate for the next 5 years on the MLB side but come on. I'd rather have Hu in my lineup as a Dodger fan for 400k than Wilson let alone give up LaRoche and another player. Just ridiculous and if that happens, the Pirate fans better NEVER complain about Hunington but of course that would only last a week or 2 before the complaining started up again.

I'm with GM Huntington that isn't enough return for 3 major pieces Bay / Grabow / Wilson .No wonder the deal is on hold right now .

If the Pirates break the three guys up in seperate trade they get much more back.

Oh and by the way, there is no way they are getting Tucker, Masterson, Lowrie, Hermida and another prospect or 2 for Bay/Grabow/Wilson. I'm just shocked at how much you seem to think these players are worth. That is 4 MLB ready players and 2 additional prospects. When you factor in payroll, your proposals make no sense for anyone but the Pirates but I guess you are a Pirates fan. Absolutely shocked! :D

$50 says the mystery team is the Mets.

I say the Red Sox best bet to make the deal Manny to Florida on there own .

Then make a seperate trade Hermedia and a couple prospects for Bay . And be done with it .

All 3 teams have made this trade to complicated by trying to include Grabow and Wilson in the Mix .

They keep this up and nothing is what will end up happening .

When was the last time a 3 team deal was pulled off .

Those deals with the way contract are structured no adays just don't happen and i don't think this one has a snowballs chance in hell of happening .

Many of these Pirates fans are delusional about Bay's value possibly including those in the front office. There are many question marks about a player like him as he ages. Just because he is arguably your best player does not mean he is worth top prospects in all of baseball. Anyone who mentions Price in a post as even remotely plausible should lose their posting rights. People still do not get that one player does not make a team and teams like the pirates need affordable depth.

It is also a joke that people think Manny would continue to decrease his free agent value by not playing hard simply out of spite. It makes no sense and it would not happen. Even everybodys favorite whipping dog boras told him to play out the rest of his contract well. The media has done its best to overblow this story. If the pirates get prospect greedy I think the sox are smart enough to walk even with the media trying to force their hand. Everyone thinks the marlins would be the losers based on the prospect names we have heard. I think they would be the real losers if the deal falls apart because it is pretty clear they were not giving up all the guys rumored.

if the deal hangs on masterson theres no way its going to get done. the marlins should throw in hermida, they're probably going to have to let him walk in 3-5 years, he'll just be another home grown player they wont be able to sign

The Pirates should be asking a lot for Bay.

2008 OPS: Manny = 938
2008 OPS: Bay = 899

Bay is under contract for next year, at 1/3rd the price. He won't give you any headaches like Manny will. Plus he is a solid fielder. For good measure - he's 7 years younger.

At this point, Bay is worth considerably more than Ramirez.

Like others I hope this whole thing blows up and the Sox get stuck with Manny. Comments over the past few days indicate that this divorce is going to be very messy.

milezd...since when do the Red Sox care about the total salary of their team? They don't care one lick about Lugo's salary. Last I checked, Lowrie was their new SS, and Jack is an immediate upgrade over him.

walkoffblast...the Pirates are looking for a return for Bay simlilar to what they got for Brian Giles. A ready prospect (Bay) a power arm (Ollie Perez) and at least one more prospect. Bay is younger and better than Giles was when he was traded. And why shouldn't they ask for the world. It's not over-valuing Bay, it's trying to get maximum value for what you have to offer contenders.

I'm not a fan of the Pirates' 'ASK FOR THE MOON' front office history, but they have -little- incentive to make a trade NOW.

They can wait until the offseason, or even next year, to deal Bay.

The onus is on the Marlins and Red Sox to make a trade happen - since the Pirates would be the ones getting NO GUARANTEES, they should get top notch prospects in return for Bay.

I don't see this deal happening unless Boston ups the ante. Florida is losing big if they are giving up Hermida, Tucker and Stanton. And Pitt is losing big if they aren't getting a Hermida, Tucker and Stanton level return for Bay AND Grabow.

It just doesn't make sense from these teams short and long term perspective to really be in this deal. Getting Bay back for the Red Sox would be a coup given the circus disaster that Manny is in the center of right now.

I would say that Bay currently has 2x the value of Manny. A) he's signed cheap next year B) he's pretty good C) he's not a distraction. The red sox are really cornered into selling Manny for 50c on the dollar at this point. But they also need to get a decent replacement back.

Please die already. This is really bad for the marlins. They are competing just fine right now willingham will pick it up and hermida is just going to get better. They really are not getting much here with manny and his bs. They nee a catcher not a Lf I say just pick up greg zaun and stay pat. This team wil compete now and in the future why destroy a team that can not only win now but for years to come. Marlins get out now!

"Many of these Pirates fans are delusional about Bay's value possibly including those in the front office."

Actually, I think front office types are delusional about the value of their prospects.

Everybody was gaga over the haul the Rangers got for Tex last year. How did that work out? The Yankees held on to Hughes/Kennedy instead of trading them for Santana. How did that work out for them?

Yeah, those two might be good 2-3 years from now but then the rest of the team is old or gone. They want to win NOW.

All these teams should want to win now. You can't count on winning every year. Look at the Tigers. World Series one year, can't even make playoffs the next two. Indians were World Series picks this year, they end up with being one of the worst teams, record-wise.

It makes no sense to hold on to 20 year old AA OFers or 22 year old AAA pitchers who may or may not be good in a couple years when somebody like the Pirates are offering a PROVEN bat that will let you win today.

I'm not saying bankrupt your farm system or just give players away but if somebody has a quality player out there, and Bay is a HIGH quality player, holding on to future hopes instead of going for the championship today makes no sense to me.

Wow Peter Gammons said the deal is close to dead but then Buster Olney says that the deal could get done. Just Marlins and Red Sox are figuring what prospects to be involved. This just shows that some reporters just like to cause a little drama in fact they might not no whats going on. Just like when Tim reported that some guy said look for Harden not to be traded. AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!

Gammons has been senile for a while Now & likes to hear himself talk

cactusbix is that is your opinion of prospects then either you are new to the prospect arena or you haven't been paying attention. If that is your opinion, why don't you ask for Price, Davis and Hellickson for Bay? Throw in a couple more while you are at it to because Bay is obviously the proven player and they are all just prospects. and they may never amount to anything. Forget that they might all turn into aces within 2 years time. Boston you say? Go ahead and ask for Lowire, Lars, Masterson and Buccholz.

That isn't how it works. Why miss the playoffs for the next 5 years just to make it this year? :D

On a side note, does anyone have a really hard time loading this site the past month or so? I just get blank pages 95% of the time and have to just keep hitting refresh 10-15 times till it loads. Then when I go to make a post, I have to go through the whole thing again to get signed in and then again just to get my post in. I suppose it could be on my side but it's the only website that I have this happen so I'm not sure what it could be.

The Red Sox are definitely not trading from a position of power here. Not a good situation for them. But I feel pretty confident Theo will not give Manny away for nothing. He will make sure he gets a good replacement (Bay) without trading away too many prospects.

On a side not, PLEASE BAN POPPA ROMEO!!

I will lose all faith in mankind if Ned trades Kemp for 2 months of Manny.

Please Tim, don't even post this stuff, it makes me sick to my stomach.

Like I have been saying, Pirates better get more back then just Hermida and a prospect.

This deal will never go now cominh up to 2PM

Not sure how accurate this is, but it just went up on ESPN: Yet another official with one of these three teams says the Manny-Bay deal is dead. In the aftermath, the teams involved seem unsure of what happened. The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren't too happy with either of them.

Looks like that Kemp/A.Jones deal might get a little more steam now. Gotta say, I love me some Matt Kemp in a Sox uniform.

jfish26101,
The site has definitey been really slow due to high traffic. It's frustrating as a daily year round reader of this site to not be able to load the page to see new updates. You gotta get that striaghtened out Tim to take the site to the next level.

P.S. I love the site and think its going to get bigger and bigger. Good work Mr. Dierkes.

this from rotoworld:

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to the prospects they'd receive in a Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida deal.

This will be a disappointingd deadline...

whoops, spoke to soon . . .

ESPN's Jayson Stark said an official with one of the clubs said the three-team Red Sox-Marlins-Pirates deal is dead.

According to Stark's source: "The Pirates are blaming the Marlins. The Marlins are blaming the Pirates. And the Red Sox aren't too happy with either of them." We fully expect another update five minutes from now saying a deal is nearly done.

Why would anyone want Jones? I know Theo isn't that stupid.

I would do Ethier/Jones for Manny in a second.

Local on XM said deal is dead and Bay will stay a Pirate.

so will the marlins make any more moves?

I hate people reporting the deal is dead. It is NEVER dead until the deadline passes. Its the oldest trick in the book to call the deal dead to try and increase your bargaining power and return. Enough with the reporters saying the deal is dead!

I used to enjoy the trade deadline a lot more than I am today. This is dragging on WAY too long.

Can Manny stay and not be a disruption?

"Looks like that Kemp/A.Jones deal might get a little more steam now. Gotta say, I love me some Matt Kemp in a Sox uniform."

I would much rather them make that deal then this three-way train wreck. But then the Fenway OF would be a little too crowded (Jones, Drew, Ellsbury, Kemp, Crisp).

Dead!

id still like to see the deal go through without the pirates involvement. trade manny to the marlins for there everyday left or right fielder, a reliever and stanton, i dont care about the pirates or bay anyway

If Bay isn't involved, the trade isn't going through. Boston wants Bay, not Florida LF.

i dont take to much stock in these writers much anymore. i remember when they said the daisuke deal was dead last year thirty minutes before the deadline, come to find out like five minutes after it he was on a plane to america to play for the sox. considering how pretty much every writer in the WORLD, managed to somehow miss a player like Griffey Jr getting traded to an odd choice of team in the ChiSox, i wouldnt hold my breathe saying this deal is dead until late tonight

pghman77, we dont have a choice, hes going to go on waivers next month anyway because there is no way the team continues to put up with him after mouthing off so much. besides, neither corner fielder from the marlins is poor in skill, i could live with it

Late tonight?

Deadline is at 4PM. If nothing is done by 5, forget it.

we have ZERO control over this trade, we have to take what we can get and the pirates gm is obviously smart enough to see that with mannys big mouth

Trade Manny for a couple of baseball bats at this point, he's negative value for the sox right now
