Let's take a look at some of the left-handed relievers on the market.
George Sherrill, Orioles
Brian Fuentes, Rockies
- Almost 33 years old, free agent after season. Type A status likely.
- Known suitors: Marlins, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, Rays, Angels, Brewers, Tigers
- Asking price: Apparently a young starting pitcher - Jon Niese, Ian Kennedy, and Clay Buchholz have been named
Damaso Marte, Pirates
- 33 years old, $6MM club option for '09 with a $250K buyout. Type A status likely.
- Known suitors: Red Sox, Tigers, Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Cardinals, Rays
- Asking price: Perhaps a package exceeding the value of two draft picks
Ron Mahay, Royals
- 37 years old, signed for '09 at $4MM.
- Known suitors: Cardinals, Yankees, Rays
- Asking price: Unknown, but Royals intend to keep him. Rany Jazayerli wonders if trading Mahay now would discourage future free agents from signing with KC.
John Grabow, Pirates
- 29 years old, under team control through '09. Elbow stiffness last year.
- Known suitors: Tigers, Phillies, Cardinals
- Asking price: Less than that of Marte
Eddie Guardado, Rangers
Alan Embree, Athletics
- 38 years old, $3MM club option for '09. Type A status possible, but may choose to accept offer of arbitration. Embree wouldn't be surprised if he was traded.
- Known suitors: None
- Asking price: Unknown
Jeremy Affeldt, Reds
- 29 years old, free agent after season. Type B status possible, could accept offer of arbitration.
- Known suitors: Yankees, Rays, Astros, Phillies last offseason
- Asking price: Unknown

Brian Fuentes for Clay Buchholz? Hahahahaha

I like this feature a lot, it would be cool to see this for other positions as well.
Based on that asking price, I imagine the cubs are out of the running for Fuentes since they do not have a SP prospect anywhere near that caliber.

LOL! Cmon!

Would love to see the Yankees go after a 2nd tier lefty like Affeldt or Taschner assuming their price is a decent amount less than a Fuentes/Marte type.

I wouldn't trade a bucket of BP baseballs for Guardado let alone a Top 60 prospect. As Jeff Gordon said it:
"Todd could reach the big leagues next year and stick for a long, long time. A veteran like Guardado might pitch 15 to 20 times during his Cards career. This would not be a good trade-off."

As for Sherrill and Fuentes I just can't imagine mortgaging the future for a reliever. The Cards weren't suppose to content this year and the plan was to make a run in '09. This team has been a great story and alot of fun to watch but it has to many holes to be a serious contentor. Mo is smart enough to stay the course and realize that one relief pitcher isn't getting us to the WS and keep all of our chips for a run in '09.

Why isn't Will Ohman mentioned? He is more likely to be traded than Mark Teixeira.

"Sorry guys we weren't supposed to contend this year. So I can't see us dealing for a Lefty RP/Closer that we would have for a few years. We have many prospects who might not make it to the big leagues that we should hold onto instead. Sure we won the WS with an 82-80 record but lets not go crazy. I mean sure both Wainwright and Carpenter could be back in August but its not worth it to try and win. Better to stay the course. Its not like Pujols won't have another MVP type season next year... and every year after that."
Gotta love pep talks.

HAHA buchholz for fuentes...Im a mets fan, so I wouldn't trade Niese for a reliever that the Mets don't really need right now...I wouldn't trade F-Mart of Niese at all

What about Jack Taschner?

Buchholz for Fuentes? Ya ummm The Sox didn't want to give him up for Santanna. No way they give him up for a rental. I like this site alot and frequent it often, but posts like this are damning to the credibility of this site. Rumors like this don't make sense at all and are completely absurd. I know this is a rumor site, but if it is ever to be a bigtime main stream site(it has the potential), things like this must not be posted unless there is substantial evidence backing it.

But I will also say that if this is true and that is the Rockies asking price, there GM in probably on Meth.

Don't blame TD for posting the rumor. Clink on the link, that is the supposed asking price and as the article states it is way too steep. It doesn't seem that the Rockies are serious about being sellers with the prices they are asking for Holliday and Fuentes. ESPECIALLY Fuentes! It is not so much that the GM is asking for Fuentes, but if he actually believes he could get this done, than not only is he on Meth but should be given a pysche exam to see if he is psytzo because he obviously has delusions of grandeur.

The Brewers could definitely get a deal done for George Sherrill - Alcides Escobar would be a perfect fit for the O's, and the Brewers still have J.J. Hardy for the next few years.

"The Brewers could definitely get a deal done for George Sherrill - Alcides Escobar would be a perfect fit for the O's . . . ."
ColonelTom, I think you've been partying too much with Dan O'Dowd.
Posted by: AF | July 22, 2008 at 12:30 PM
would the redsox want to bring embree back?
Posted by: fgsfsfbbbrd | July 22, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Sherrill's just hitting arbitration eligibility next year, so he's not a rental like Fuentes. He's also earning $980,000 this year, so there's no salary hit for the team picking him up. There's no way the O's are giving him up without getting a very good prospect in return. And when your closer is Salomon Torres, you need to get help.

I think Jays should move Scott Downs. He's cheap and has two more years left on his contract.
He is expendable, imo, and is probably better than any reliever on that list. (Underrated, look at his numbers over last two years)
Tallet with a 3.11ERA, and Carlson 1.95ERA, both lefties, Downs with a better track record, and two more years, should have some value.

Ohman and Taschner are good candidates, I agree.

The braves need to step in and bring alan embree back to atlanta. He would give great veteran leadership to the braves young bullpen

Colonel Tom- Don't sweat AF; some guys on this site are a little...slow. The question isn't whether Sherrill is worth the asking price, but whether the Brewers would pay it. While it does not appear that the Crew is serious about making a run at a top target like Fuentes, Sherrill, or Street, Escobar isn't some crazy Buchholz-esque asking price. Frankly, when you look at what the Rox are asking for, a Double A SS in the midst of a career year (by no means a sure thing like LaPorta or even Gamel) seems pretty fair. Maybe a bit steep, but as has been noted over and over, there tends to be an inflationary effect as it pertains to relievers this time of the year. With Hardy in the bigs, I could see both clubs settling on such a swap.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 22, 2008 at 04:00 PM
The Brewers weren't willing to include Escobar in the CC Sabathia...do you REALLY think they will give him up for 1 reliever?
They are expecting Escobar to be up with the Brewers as soon as opening day next year and probably for sure by middle of the year next year...no chance we trade him for Sherrill or Fuentes...we would probably trade Rickie Weeks and his super potential/pathetic outcome play...you will probably see a middle infield next year with Hardy/Escobar and Hardy could just might be playing second base...

Saving Marte for the picks is a good idea in theory. The only problem is the Pirates are too cheap and too poorly run to actually sign their draft picks.
For example, this year we took Tanner Scheppers and Justin Wilson with two of our top 10 picks. We probably aren't going to sign either one. What good is drafting these guys if you don't actually sign them?
So the Type A picks sound good but if we don't actually use them, then Marte is basically leaving for nothing. It's probably better if we get two minor league guys even if they aren't elite prospects.
I'd hold on to Grabow. He's cheap and under control for the immediate future. Without Marte, he'll be our only relieable lefty reliever. Unless somebody offers a Scott Kazmir-type deal, there's no upside in trading him now.
