« Yankees To Sign Eric Milton | Main | With Alou Out, Mets Looking At Ibañez »
When we last checked, nine teams had expressed interest in Rockies closer Brian Fuentes at some point: the Marlins, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, A's, Cubs, Cardinals, and Rays. Today Ken Rosenthal adds a tenth team to the mix: the Angels. The Rays are considered the frontrunner.
Rosenthal did a phone interview with Fuentes, asking about his geographic preference once he becomes a free agent. Fuentes notes that he's a West Coast guy, but most importantly he wants to remain a closer.

I can't imagine the Angels being a legitimate suitor for Fuentes. With the emergence of Arredondo as a setup man, along with Shields having a solid season they really don't have a strong need. Even with Speier sucking. I guess Darren Oliver as your only lefty out of the bullpen isn't a great option, but Fuentes is going to cost more than the LAA are willing to pay. Do the Angels ever give up their prospects?? I'd think they would go for an inexpensive lefty before shelling out the prospects for someone like Fuentes.

What about Schoneweis from the Mets for Rivera? Show is having a great season but the Mets have 3 LHP in the pen. They are in need of an OF so seems like a good fit.

One of the Mets' lefties is Wagner (closer). So he doesn't really count. Trading Schoeneweis or Feliciano means you really only have 1 lefty in the bullpen.

I still think the Rays get him. Niemann and another mid-level prospect is a solid deal. The only way I don't see the Rays getting him is if the Red Sox give up Michael Bowden.

Speaking for all Angels fans out there we have no need or desire to acquire Scott Shoeneweis.
Now, if you want to take on GMJ's contract then maybe we can talk ...

I know my name says I'm a Jays fan but I'm also a Cubs fan. I don't see the Cubs going out and getting Fuentes since they have Wood for a closer. I don't see why the Cubs, Red Sox, Mets, A's, Yankees, would want him, considering they already have good closers. Since Fuentes wants to remain a closer those teams shouldn't waste prospects on him unless he will agree to be a setup man or something else in their respective bullpens.

I would assume they'd get fuentes and then that would solidify that the angels are going to let krod walk and collect the 2 picks. I think I'd rather have fuentes and 2 good picks at about 7 mil cheaper than krod.

If the Red Sox are willing to give up Michael Bowden in a deal for a reliever, then they might as well go after Huston Street. Fuentes is good and all, but he's going to be a free agent after the year, whereas Street will still be under control for a couple more seasons. Bowden is valuable enough that he could probably net the Sox Fuentes pretty much straight up, but if the Red Sox are willing to give up such a good prospect, then maybe if they throw in one more good one and say, Brandon Moss, they could land Street, the better, younger, cheaper pitcher.

You know I have to agree with that "UConnHuskies" guy. I mean I can't see the Angels picking up Fuentes when the Angels bullpen is pretty solid as it is ranking 8th in the AL.
On the other hand, I know the Brewers were looking for much needed bullpen help and this is a guy who can give you 68 games a season in relief and bag you about 24 saves while holding a pretty solid 3.50ERA. Alot better than Guillermo Mota this season.
