I love it when prognosticators say things like "trade Gary Sheffield". Who would want him?

*Clicks on link to Baseball Banter, then reads the aforementioned article--and has now read Baseball Banter for the first and last time*
Really, I can't be bothered if, in the first few paragraphs, I find:
--The misspelling of the player who the post/article is about: Mark Teixeira.
(And I know that his name is frequently misspelled--which is understandable in a quickly typed comment, but for a post, it could've been proofread first.)
--Misuse of the words "there/their".
--Random capitalization.
And now, I'm a jerk for pointing it out, but ugh--it's not the best blog you guys have linked to.

I agree Starry. That link was a pretty big disappointment to me as well, not just for the fact that they misspelled Teixeira's name, but the analysis was also extremely weak.

Glad I wasn't the only one. Not a big fan of any of the linked articles. You can get better insight by random posters on this site.

I agree with Chris.

I still like the idea of the Dodgers signing Tex to play third. I know it wont happen, but if they could resign Manny and bring in Tex, that would be an insane lineup.

@StarrEyed: Right on man. Not to mention that he seems to think Jeff Mathis and Gary Matthews were key to the Angels success this year. Has he even watched the Angels?

"I still like the idea of the Dodgers signing Tex to play third."
Why would Tex want to play 3RD? I know he came up as a 3RD Baseman, but after already having 2 GG at IST, why would he want to switch? And play for the Dodgers, I dont see that happening.

"Not to mention that he seems to think Jeff Mathis and Gary Matthews were key to the Angels success this year."
Have you even watched an Angels game this year? When Napoli was out Mathis stepped in, played solid D and supplied some power. Granted he didnt consistently hit, but he was clutch in RISP situations by hitting over .300. What else could Scioscia ask for?
And GMJ did have some clutch hits and RBI's. He came up big a few times when it mattered.

Cain isn't going to be a Yankee. A large part of his wealth is his youth and his affordability; two things the Yankee organization undervalues.
Posted by: The Juice | September 26, 2008 at 05:49 PM
"Trade Cano, and Hughes for Matt Cain."
This is assuming the Giants are trying to lose next year rather than theoretically trying to win. This is just silly.
"Trade Ian Kennedy for Magglio Ordonez."
I'll politely put down this trade offer by calling you mentally deficient. Dear god, why on earth would anyone trade a power hitter for a pitcher who's ceiling is AAA ball. Even if it's just salary relief, the Tigers would get a better offer.

if i was walt jocketty id trade for maggs in a heartbeat and stick him in left opposite dickerson/stubbs and bruce
i dont know what the tigers would want
maybe something like daryl thompson and chris valaika

"Trade Jackson,Corona,Horne,Brackman and Cervelli for Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino"
Ok...the Phillies would want players such as Joba and Hughes. Players who would make an impact next year; not prospects who are even top 100.

BJ Ryan/Adam Lind/(+?) for Magglio Ordonez.
Tigers get an elite closer for 2 seasons and 5 seasons of a good young hitter. Jays get the middle of the order bat they desperately need.
Thoughts?
Posted by: 92-93 | September 26, 2008 at 10:42 PM
I think the Jays are the one team that can afford to give up their young OF and closer cuz of their bullpen depth. Seems like a fair trade as is... No one else is needed otherwise Jays would be overpaying.

Maggs isn't going anywhere.

Illitch is not going to cut payroll just because Henning said so.

If someone were to offer the Tigers a package such as Lind & Ryan for Mags, I think the Tigers would be stupid not to take it. I agree with you... Im not so sure Mags will be traded but if they were overwhelmed by an offer dont be surprised if they did pull the trigger.

"he smartest thing you can do when a yanks fan posts is ignore it. they think their garbage gets your talent. the phillies offer is the funniest."
Ah, so true... and i know I've come up with some whoppers in my day, but Chris' ideas are completely insane.
1) For the Yankees to have any chance whatsoever at that roster next season, they'd have to break any and all salary cap records in MLB history. Oh, and 29 other teams would have to believe that the rosters they have will be OK in 2009 and make no moves whatsoever.
2) There's no guarantee that Mussina will be back. I for one hope he can still pitch another year or so, because he's a helluva pitcher and I think he's still got a little left in him.
3) Cano and Hughes for Matt Cain. I'm sorry... what?!?
4) Jackson,Corona,Horne,Brackman and Cervelli for Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino. If that first deal wasn't completely insane, then I think you've made up for it.
If you're proposing a roster like this, why not go ahead and pick up Manny to platoon in left with his ol buddy Damon, sign Dunn to play second base and be the bullpen catcher, and then you can get Teixeira to sell the hot dogs and beer. Sounds pretty ridicuous, doesn't it? Well, my friend, so did your ideas.
And let it be stated, for the record, that I am not belittling you because I am a Red Sox fan. I am belittling you because no way, no how do half of those moves make it. You should have a little more sense than that. I mean, come on. Signing CC and Garland is feasible. Joba to the pen is a must. But thats where you got outright preposterous.
92-93... that would be a very dangerous lineup, having Wells, Rios, and Mags... Not bad at all. Chris, take notes from him.

The Jays are preparing an offer for Burnett, could be on the table as we speak. It is believed to be a 2 year extension worth 30 million.
www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=250879&lid=headline&lpos=secStory_mlb
Burnett said he would stay for market value and that is market value, so it looks promising.
Posted by: Grant77 | September 27, 2008 at 03:59 AM
And Manny Ramirez said he wanted to finish his career in Boston. It's a requirement to say "I want to stay." Though to be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if Burnett stays.

You just copied that entire comment on the Jays board :p

Okay I am a yankee fan but have to agree some of these trades I see involving the yankees are nuts. Now I would love to see Howard at first but this is never going to happen. Lets see a trade for Howard would probably need something like Chamberlin, Hughes, Kennedy, Jackson. That is just for Howard. It takes a bunch to get a two time MVP (2009?)!!!!!
Kennedy is worth very little at this point and to think the Tigers would give up Ordonez for him is also nuts.
I don't want Cain. I don't want Burnett. I want to give the young pitchers a shot. If we get anything we need a top rotation starter like C.C. Then we need a young, again young center feilder. The yankees were built in the 90's on good defense up the middle and home grown talent. In the 80's they brought in outside stars. Remember Ken Phelpes and Jese Barfeild. We need to get a bunch younger home grown players.

"Move Joba back to the pen"
That would be an incredibly stupid move. You have a guy that dominant as a starter and you want him in the 'pen?
"When Napoli was out Mathis stepped in, played solid D and supplied some power. Granted he didnt consistently hit, but he was clutch in RISP situations by hitting over .300. What else could Scioscia ask for?"
Perhaps a guy with a better average than Mario Mendoza, or even an injured, 41 year old Omar Vizquel?
Mathis is an excellent defender behind the plate and handles Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver extremely well. His throwing was really scary during the middle of the season and his bat, while you are right about the RISP stats, was scary bad most of the time.
He was not the key to this team.
"And GMJ did have some clutch hits and RBI's. He came up big a few times when it mattered."
Very early in the year, I would agree. He had a few clutch hits, but was absolutely terrible for most of the year. To the point that he lost his job to a guy making something like 1/8th the money with less talent on paper.
"Why would Tex want to play 3RD? I know he came up as a 3RD Baseman, but after already having 2 GG at IST, why would he want to switch?"
Why does Russell Martin, a Gold Glove catcher, enjoy playing 3B? Why wouldn't Tex want to play his natural position if it meant playing in a very strong lineup?
"And play for the Dodgers, I dont see that happening."
Why specifically? Tex would get great exposure, be close to Boras and see more fast balls.
Anyway, you really don't seem to get the meaning of the word conjecture.
