« Frank Coonelly MLB.com Chat | Main | Dodgers, Phillies Interested In Iguchi »
MLB.com's Corey Brock talked to Padres GM Kevin Towers, who said he plans to talk to closer Trevor Hoffman about a contract for next year before season's end. The interest is mutual.
If the Padres decline Brian Giles' option and trim payroll to $50MM, they'll have about $7MM left to spend on Hoffman and other free agents.

Hoffman is great. He is a fixture in SD. That said, if they want to compete and really do have to stay under $50m that money would be better spent on Giles.

Exactly BJ. Hoffman is almost finished. Having a down year and there is no reason to have him around when you can have Heath Bell do the job. Besides, its not like Hoffman came through for them in their biggest spots.
