« Offseason Outlook: Atlanta Braves | Main | Bedard A Non-Tender Candidate? »
Pitcher Curt Schilling sounded off on former teammate Manny Ramirez yesterday on WEEI. His comments can be found here and here. Schilling says management ultimately took a players' vote, and they elected to have Manny traded. The public is aware of just 10-20% of Ramirez's antics, according to Schilling.
Meanwhile, Joe Posnanski takes a look at the genius of Manny in a column at SI.com.

Dear Mr. Ramirez,
The wonderful people of Canada beseech you to consider our beautiful country this offseason. You will have the opportunity to play the Massholes 18 times a year, and show Schilling, Youkilis, the travel secretary, and whomever else exactly who earned them those 2 World Series Rings. And preferably, don't take our GM to the cleaners, so how does a reasonable 2/40 deal with a vesting 20m option sound? You can wear your hair as long as you like, nobody will even notice. And as you already know, you can go clubbing and nobody will know who you are because they are too busy all summer trying to figure out if Mats Sundin is coming back from Sweden. Oh yeah, and the legal drinking age is 19 - that might not attract you, but it could work wonders for Paul Lo Duca.
Yours Truly,
A Dedicated Blue Jays Fan

Schilling stole $8 million from the Red Sox. He signed the contract while he was hurt. Manny took $7 million on his way out of town. I'm not sure which one is worse.
If I had stolen $8 million I'd probably be hiding and not in the public eye making radio appearances and going to John McCain rallies, but that's just me.

Curt Schilling. Curt Schilling? Wow. Can't wait til he decides to write a book about his baseball career which would basically be a Baseball Burn Book. He should stick to being on the down-lo.

Yes, Schilling won three world series. Yes, he's an amazing pitcher. but that does not alleviate him of culpability for his words and actions, especially the statements he's making off the field which reflect poorly on his team.
Manny did a lot for Boston. Without their offense behind them, no amount of great pitching would have won them the world series. you need equal parts and Manny was a huge part of that.
Schilling isn't exactly clean either, you know? He's got his own skeletons.
Plus, there's that 8 million he agreed to when he knew he wouldn't be playing this year.
Schilling is a bitter hypocrite. I've said it before on these forums and I'm saying it again.
Just a sad, angry man.

Schill's one of those guys who has mouthed off his whole career. Whether or not you like it or him, you had to expect something from him in the near future cause he hasn't been in the news lately.

"I've been robbing payroll for the entire season, no one feels worse about not contributing than me" - Schilling
Oh please! Break out the violins for Curt, he feels so bad.
That said there is still no excuse for what Manny did this summer. Yeah, he helped Boston win rings for which he was paid $20M/yr to do so. He was clearly dogging it to get out of his contract this year. The production youre seeing in LA right now would never materialize in Boston these last 2 months. In fact, Im sure Manny wouldnt even play if the trade didnt happen.
Good luck to the GM who signs Manny for 4 years - you'll get 1 good year and 3 headaches.

Schilling is a bit of a blowhard, but Lou is usually pretty quiet. If he's saying the same thing, I'd tend to believe it.

"Manny took $7 million on his way out of town. I'm not sure which one is worse."
At least the Sox got an All-Star in return.
With Schilling, all they got was a first rate a-hole of the Jeff Kent variety who signed a contract knowing he was hurt and goes around using his celebrity to push causes most of the Sox fan base loathes. All that, and he is the biggest attention whore I have ever seen.
He should be thanking his lucky stars that Manny was there putting up numbers in support of his pitching, because that team wouldn't have won without him. Ortiz wouldn't be Papi without Manny's protection and I guess Schilling forgets just how Manny carried them to both titles.

Schilling is the biggest biz-otch not in baseball. If anyone gives him a job for anything other than pitching and shutting the f up, i will hunt him/her down, and kick them in the nuts/ovaries.

Way to be politically correct, champ.

Who saw this coming? Schilling is usually so quiet and polite. He hardly ever opens his mouth....
It would be funny if Manny came out and revealed that the bloody sock was just a prop, and Schill is a faker :)

Are all of you kidding, killing Curt Schilling for his comments. First of all like this is anything new for Curt, Second apparently most of you are not Red Sox fans because if you were you would have realized that Ramirez quit on his team in 06, when the Yanks came into fenway and took 5 out of 5 games in one weekend and guess who didn't play when the team needed him most half of the team was on the dl and Manny being Manny {thank god I don't have to put up with that crap anymore} doesn't think he should play anymore that season. I will not dispute what the guy did for the Red Sox as far as numbers go. People talk about 5 tool players and Manny certainly was not that, seldom did he ever run out a ground ball, nor was he a good baserunner, or a good fielder at fenway ok, away from fenway a liability. Now personally Manny trying to sell a gril on ebay for 4000 dollars when you make 20 million a year, really Manny. He is awful for the game of baseball, if star players can dictate a season for a club and tie the clubs hands to force a trade that sets a bad precedence for the game. MLB should investigate more and make Manny give money back to Sox for his behavior on his way out of town. What a A hole Manny you won't be missed.

"What a A hole Manny you won't be missed."
Manny was the single biggest influence in winning those championships for Boston, so you should really reconsider your position. Or are you forgetting what he did to the Indians to save your team from elimination?

Do you Boston fans really think the Red Sox beat the Yankees without Ramirez in the lineup??
In 2004 do you really think Ortiz has the opportunity to hit those homeruns in the ALCS, if Ramirez isn't behind him?
Schilling is a puke. He was a great pitcher for a longtime, and was clutch in the playoffs, but he is an idiot. More then 95% of the crap he says, is exactly that. He says nothing that adds anything to anything. He talks to hear his own voice.

This is all Schilling's fault? Boston doesn't have doctors or doesn't perform physicals? Isn't there any due diligence required on the part of the club when writing an $8m contract?
