« White Sox Decline Options On Griffey, Hall | Main | Burnett Decision Due Monday Before GM Meetings »
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, Nationals reliever Chad Cordero was outrighted to Triple A today. He refused the assignment and is now a free agent. This comes as no surprise, as GM Jim Bowden admitted in July that he would non-tender Cordero.
Cordero, 26, had surgery in July to repair tears in his labrum and biceps tendon. He hopes to be ready for spring training.

I guess we'll hear very soon that omar has signed chad cordero....

I think some team will get desparate enough for a closer and give Cordero some ridiculous contract. More power to him.

"I think some team will get desparate enough for a closer and give Cordero some ridiculous contract. More power to him."
I don't see anyone giving him more than a minor league deal with his injuries.
My guess on who picks him up: Rays or Jays. Keep the bargain bullpen going. Or maybe the Mets.

I always thought there was an MLB rule against getting rid of players when they were hurt, but I must be wrong.

The Cardinals seem to like the Nationals players this season...wouldn't be surprised if they looked at Cordero.

Chad isn't under contract, but he was still under team control if they wanted to offer him arbitration. By taking him off the 40 man roster, he can become a free agent.

Agreed. If he is healthy, he will be a Met. He is one of Omar's guys. Plus, if he is any good, the Mets fans will love him and his flat billed hat. I can even see a flat billed Chad Cordero hat night. Oh, the possibilities.

If cordero is healthy by spring training, he will more than likely go to a team that really needs a closer, like the Mets.
Bowden was a complete dumb@$$ for not keeping Cordero. He was very effective for the Nats and this one injury just destroyed his year. As a Nats fan, I'll miss Cordero's flat-brimmed hat.
The minor league deal option was insane.

I've always wondered,
If a player, like Chad Cordero, is hurt while doing his job, isn't he subject to Workman's Comp protection?
Posted by: cowsarecool220 | October 30, 2008 at 04:10 PM
I could see the RedSox and Mets signing Chad Cordero as clear possibilities.

Mets written all over this
Posted by: BaseballFanatic40 | October 30, 2008 at 04:19 PM
I'm all for it, but I still want to see the Mets go for K-Rod or Fuentes. Yes, I'm greedy.

i expect the rangers to make a play for chad. they already implied they'd improve the bullpen through free agency, and cordero could have a bounce back year potentially (i.e. - eddie guardado).
just a thought
Posted by: tmoney352 | October 30, 2008 at 04:37 PM
Tell me what you guys think....
I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockies go for him. They need a cheap replacement for Brian Fuentes to bolster a weak 2009 bullpen. I wouldn't be surprised if they are the one wh gives Cordero a rediculous contract (i.e. Vizcaino).

How about the Tigers? Chad's effective when healthy, and the Tigers could have that shutdown closer they've been looking for for years.

Everyone is saying big market teams but to me this has small market written all over it. Although the Mets are desperate.
Posted by: BucSox | October 30, 2008 at 04:44 PM
I don't think they are even the least bit desperate. All indications are they want nothing to do with K-Rod, and maybe Fuentes either. Doesn't sound very desperate to me.
Posted by: nrmax88 | October 30, 2008 at 05:16 PM
If the Mets sign K-Rod, I will admit they are desperate. However, signing guys like Cordero, looking at an Affeldt type, and searching the trade market are not desperate type moves, and it appears thats the route they are taking.

Screw Wood. Get draft picks and go after Cordero. I mean Woody had a nice run in Chit- Town, it's time to move on. A
Samardzija, Marmol, Cordero at the end of the game = GAME OVER. Go get him Jim. ( Unless you have no intrest and you decide to sign Wood, and have Samrdzija in the rotation I guess thats ok too)
Posted by: BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE | October 30, 2008 at 05:28 PM
Mets should get him. Hes solid, thats better than anything the mets got.
Posted by: yankfan1 | October 30, 2008 at 06:20 PM
um.....INDIANS.....
We signed Joe Borowski only after he failed his physical with Philly....we also need a closer.....could very well see this. Fuentes and K-Rod are gonna be too expensive for the Tribe....

Detroit does seem like a pretty good fit. They would throw a decent amount of money at him, and due to his reputation as a fly ball pitcher, could be very effective getting hitters to fly out to the graveyard that is CF in Comerica.
Posted by: rdccdr801 | October 30, 2008 at 07:39 PM
I think the Red Sox would be a perfect fit. They have decent depth in the bullpen to not count on Cordero too much and they have the money. Once Timlin is gone, having Cordero to slot in is a nice option.

"Mets written all over this"
I pray to GOD he signs with the Mets. Maybe Jose Reyes will injure his neck looking at all the balls fly out of the NEW Shea stadium with Cordero on the mound.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | October 30, 2008 at 08:20 PM
A lot of closers have pride, I doubt Cordero would go to a team where there isn't a chance of him closing like Boston.
New York(NL), Saint Louis, Detroit, or Pittsburgh(I said it.) seem reasonable to me. Most likely incentive based I'm sure.
Posted by: insomniac | October 30, 2008 at 08:21 PM
Hes going to have to prove his health before someone throws him in a closers role. i think he knows that.
Posted by: GeneralManager | October 30, 2008 at 08:30 PM
He would look good in a Rays uniform since Troy Percival is going to retire. You will have Howell in long relief Bradford in the 6th,Wheeler 7th, another left hander/Grant Balfour 8th, and Chad Cordero 9th to close the game.

BleedingCubbieblue wants the Cubs to sign Cordero. I see issues with that.
1. Kerry Wood is the closer and had 36 saves last year, Wood has been with the cUbs for 10 years and is getting a reverence that few players get in Cubbiedom--players like Sandberg and Banks.
2.If the Cubs are going to let Woody walk and sign a free agent closer why go for damaged goods (pitchers take 1 to 2 years to recover from shoulder surgery) when F-Rod is available.
3. Why address a position that is NOT a problem ??? Granted Wood is not F-Rod or Papelbon but has proven himself as a decent closer
Posted by: ryno23 | October 31, 2008 at 07:51 AM
The Cubs should definitely make a run at Cordero. He will come much cheaper since he is coming off an injury but at the same time he is a dominant closer when healthy. Having Woody and Cordero at the end of the game would be just filthy. I believe that Woody is perfectly capable to be the closer but think of how filthy the bullpen is with Wood, Marmol, and Cordero at the tail end of the bullpen.
