Perrotto's Latest: Peavy, Unit, Joba

John Perrotto has his Every Given Sunday column up over at Baseball Prospectus. Here's some highlights from his "Rumors and Rumblings section" this week:

  • Perrotto expects a Jake Peavy deal to be done before the Winter Meetings, stating that the Braves, Yankees, and Dodgers seem to be the leaders in the race right now. He notes that the Yankees will be willing to include Phil Hughes, while the Braves are willing to move Yunel Escobar. I personally like the Escobar idea for San Diego, as it would allow them to make Atlanta take on Khalil Greene's salary. A package around Escobar and Tommy Hanson would certainly be tough to ignore.
  • Perrotto reiterates that a move to the Dodgers or Angels for California-native Randy Johnson seems like a strong possibility. Johnson posted a fine season for the Diamondbacks, despite being 45 years old. He's maintained a very solid strikeout-rate even at this stage in his career, fanning 8.46 batters per nine innings.
  • The Yankees are planning on using Joba Chamberlain in their rotation next year, but are not planning on settling for what they have. Perrotto states that the Yankees will "go all-in" on the free agent market, making aggressive offers to C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Mark Teixeira. Add in the pursuit of Peavy, and decisions on numerous free agents, and it looks like a very busy offseason for the Bombers.

This is ridiculous. It's arguable that Peavy wont be the pitcher he is away from Petco and we are going to go and downgrade at SS just to get him? On top of that throw multiple prospects at him? Wren needs to face the facts and just take 2-3 years to rebuild rather than make a move like this. It was doubtful Peavy makes this team as is a contender but when you start taking MLB pieces away it's hard to imagine this making us that much better. As a fan outside of baseball that spends a good amount of time tinkering around with this sort of thing it just doesn't make sense. If Wren pulls this deal and gives Escobar/Hanson/Schafer or Heyward in any combination of players I'll be extremely disapointed.

Not sure if this has been mentioned on another Peavy rumor, but why would the Padres trade him to the Dodgers? I'm aware that the Dodgers have a lot of young talent to trade, but it makes so sense to trade him within the division since I'm sure the Padres plan on contending at least sometime within the next five years.

I disagree strongly with Perotto. I don't think the Yankees will move Hughes and I don't think the Braves will move Yunel. Neither scenario makes sense. Lazy, lazy sportswriters.

If Escobar is included then Hanson won't be.

D O'Brien at AJC said Heyward and Teheran are almost completely untouchable (barring a straight one for one swap) and Hanson and Schafer are only a little behind them.

Here we go again about the yankees signing all the freeagents spending more then 100 million. It will be nice to see them not make the playoffs again

nrmax88, completely agree. If Wren can't get this done with prospects, then he needs to walk away and hope the Padres come back after failing to get what they want elsewhere. It's going to be a tough season next year even if we get Peavy but if we start dismantling the young pieces we have it's going to be really difficult. People in the other threads were suggesting stuff like Jurrjens + prospects for Peavy and like the Escobar scenario, it makes no sense for the Braves to even consider it. I don't blame the Padres for asking but Wren better say no or I'll definitely blame him in the future.

NickC, they will have to add more, Escobar isn't enough. They will feed us the same line their fans do about how Greene is a valuable player given his defense and power combination. While that is the case, it just doesn't make sense. I can't fathom a deal centered around Heyward, Jurrjens or Escobar that would end well for the Braves future.

This looks like it's going to upset a lot of Braves fans. In the end, it'll be the price to pay for a top 5 pitcher under team control for years. He'll cost an arm and a leg, but you guys will love seeing him go up and match Santana pitch for pitch when you play the Mets for the next few years.

Now, whether Peavy alone can take the Braves back to the playoffs is doubtful, so in that regard I question why Atlanta is so keen. Then again, Peavy's arrival will sell lots of jerseys and fill the stands. I'm sure it makes lots of financial sense.

As to why Towers would consider trading Peavy to LA, if he feels he's getting a better offer from them, then there you go. Ultimately, if Towers can deal Jake to someone else for an equal offer, he will. However, if LA's offer is ridiculously better, then he might as well.

go look at peavys splits from 2004-2007 and stop this ridiculous nonsense about how peavy would not pitch well outside of petco. he is an ace on any staff in baseball and one of the best in the game. people are really showing their ignorance on here.

Can anyone tell me the official date that trades can begin? All this talk of a trade possibly being done next week doesnt go with anything i thought. i thought you had to wait till after the world series to trade not using the waiver rule

can anyone clear this up for me please

they can happen now but usually begin after the world series for respect to not take anything away from the world series

omg this would be almost as bad as the teixeira trade!!!! All we need is another guy to threaten the mendoza line in greene!!! i love peavy and would love to see him come to atl for a plethera of prospects not named heyward, hanson, or teheran, but to give up esco, hanson and possibly more well then i think frank wrens days in atl will be number when the braves fail to make the playoffs again!!!!

Between the end of the regular season and July 31, a player may be traded without passing through waivers.

Between August 1 and the end of the regular season, a player may not be traded unless he first passes through revocable Major League waivers.

khalil greene is going to thrive as soon as he gets out of petco park especially if he goes to a hitter friendly one.

i love how people ignore his 44 doubles 4 triples 27 homers 97 RBI with gold glove defense in a terrible hitters park on a no offense team.

more ignorance

The Braves, Cardinals, and Astros shouldn't waste their time with Peavy, none of those teams has a bounty of prospects worthy enough to make this deal happen. Towers would foolish to pursue this. I hope the Yankees just go away on this matter, Hughes still isn't enough of a trade chip either. The Dodgers have the goods, but that too wouldn't be wise, in that they shouldn't tear apart the good young talent they have.
However, the Reds and the Rays definately have the goods. The Reds could offer Bruce, Cueto, Bray and/or Bailey.
The Rays could dish up Price and two of their other pitching prospects.
The cubbies are another sleeper. a package of Samardzija, Marshall, and their 2006 #1 pick CF could be plenty to convince Towers to make a deal. And then theres the RedSox, any package from Ellsbury, Pedroia, Lowrey, Masterson, Delcarmen, Daniel Bard and Clay Buchholz would be interesting.

pedroia isn't going anywhere anytime soon

"The Rays could dish up Price and two of their other pitching prospects."

Why would the Rays trade for Peavy and his $62 mil pricetag, when they've got 6 starting pitchers (and more in the minors) who are all good and under team control, and they're one game from the WS?

Maybe it makes sense... but not to me.

Yeah, Ty, you're an idiot. Jay Bruce? David Price? Dustin Pedroia AND Jacoby Ellsbury? LMAO. Let's just make this fair: The Reds throw in Edinson Volquez, the Rays throw in Evan Longoria.

Lmao. That's ridiculous.

I hope the Braves get Peavy, and they are probably going to.

Im happy the Yankees are going to use Joba as a starter, thats where he belongs.

ty-grrr the braves dont have the parts to make the deal happen huh??? so that means u dont think shafaer, heyward, hanson, teheran, plus there slightly lower prospects is enough to land peavy?!?!? thats jus crazy im not saying i would want this to happen im jus saying the braves cud easily land peavy with the prospects they have not to mention kj and esco

bkoke, it's possible but don't ignore his weaknesses. I mean you completely ignored his '08 season to give us his '07 counting stat totals. Why not mention 2008? He hits .200 because he is in Petco?

home = .215/.291/.360/.651
away = .212/.225/.317/.542

I'm just not seeing it. Again it's possible he becomes some elite level SS like all the Padre fans keep telling everyone but I don't see it.

Funny, Joba got a DUI today.

hey TyGrrrrr u want to send me some of that stuff ur smokin? looks like dandy stuff

Ty-Grrrr...... you must be clinically insane. Seriously.

Ty-Grrrr

The Rays and Reds have one of the best rotations in each others leagues.

Dont trade for Peavy!

gosh im glad im not the only one who thought that ty-grr was out of his mind!!!!

Wren wont do it. So far the reports are he is not budging from his stance on the untouchable prospects. Thats why Towers was looking for other teams to get involved. If Wren gives up Escobar, very little else will be going along with him. If we trade any combination of Escobar, Hanson, Heyward, Schafer,Freeman, Jurjens, I wont renew my season tickets.

J. Peavy is a monster ... yanks 09

z

no way wren trades jurrjens!!! at least i sure as hell hope so, i wouldnt trade jj straight up for peavy!!! as far as the esco plus hanson idea no way in hell!!!! please dont repeat the teixeira mistake wren!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah that post really had it all. I think what really put it over the top though was in the middle he drops in that the Cubs could get him Samardzija, Marshall, and I'm assuming either Pie or Colvin (Colvin being the 2006 #1 pick, but not a CF and Pie not being drafted in 2006). Yeah the Braves, Cards, and Astros don't have the prospects to get it done, but the Cubs will get it done with that mediocre package.

I was just reading Dave O'Brien's blog and he seems to agree with most Braves fans... If Escobar is included the top prospects are off the table.

1. Escobar is worth more than Heyward or Hanson. He's proven himself at the MLB level, unlike Heyward/Hanson.

2. Khalil Greene has negative trade value. If the Padres were to insert him in a Peavy deal, it would be to lessen the price tag on the Braves side.

3. Escobar is a way around trading Heyward, Hanson, or Schafer. I could see Escobar + Flowers + 2 pitchers (Parr, Medlen, Locke, Rohrborough, etc.) looking like a healthy deal, with a little added in. Flowers is blocked at C by McCann and at 1B by Freeman/Kotchman, and Hanson and Jurrjens go nowhere.

4. Braves fans: look at it. Johan Santana cost the Mets 137MM. Peavy will cost you guys 81MM, and is a committment of fewer years.

On #3- It might get to the point where Gorkys might be required though.

The Teixeira trade REALLY hurt the Braves. The Braves could put together a nice package based on sheer volume and quality if not for that stupid trade. Reminds us all of the stupidity of rent-a-player trades.

melonis rex speaks wisely on all points except for the Teixeira trade deal. Sure it looks bad now, but I'd still do it 100% of the time given everything holds the same...lest ye forget the trials and tribulations of one Scott Thorman and the mighty Thor-breeze when he wiffs time after time.

Even if we do trade Escobar I am remiss to accept Khalil Greene. I wonder if Lillibridge might be just as acceptable an alternative (minus the money).

soupdejour, Lil' Bridge would probably play good D, post a .300 OBP, and hit 2 HR. Greene would probably play good D, post a .300 OBP, and hit 20-25 HR at Turner Field.

I'm not that excited about getting him (he does cost a lot, but only for 1 year), but if he is key to getting a good deal done without giving up the farm, I think he'd be okay as a starter, with Lil Bridge as a backup in case of complete disaster.

greene+negative value= ret@rded fans

soupdujour- I don't. It was obvious what the Braves needed to get into the playoffs in 2007, and that was PITCHING. I would much rather have used those prospects in the offseason to acquire a starting pitcher.

Sorry, I still hate that deal for the Braves, and I am neither a Braves nor a Padres fan.

Khalil Greene was one of the worst shortstops in MLB, and was injured on top of that. He has negative trade value.

Wren would be foolish to deal more than one of these guys: Hanson, Escobar, Heyward.

Escobar is a great defensive SS and good hitter. I don't know why we would trade Esco and then be willing to take on Greene and his hunky salary. Greene is a below average player who never lived up to the hype.

Give the Padres Hanson, Lilibridge, KJ and Morton.

Ty-Grrrr...... you must be clinically insane. Seriously.

:) Absolutely...
Totally....
