Prior Ready For Start Of '09 Season?

6:33pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock talked to Boggs, who says Prior is interested in returning to the Padres.  He could be a low-cost option for them, but it's unknown whether they're interested.  Prior is currently playing catch (well, maybe not right this second).

10:24am: According to ESPN's Buster Olney:

Mark Prior, who had a second, less-invasive surgery on his right shoulder earlier this year, is in the midst of a throwing program and should be ready for the start of the 2009 season, said his agent, John Boggs. Prior is expected to file for free agency. "He said he feels good, that his shoulder has never felt better," said Boggs.

Prior, 28, was originally targeting May for his Padres debut.  Then it was pushed to June, and then his season ended with more surgery.  Last winter, at least ten teams contacted Boggs about Prior.  Aside from the Padres, the most aggressive were the Astros, Cardinals, Mets, and Rangers.

For what it's worth, Kevin Towers mentioned back in June that Prior may be willing to take on a minor league deal with the Padres for '09, as a goodwill signing for stealing $1MM this year.

With Peavy possibly on the way out, and Young as the only other sure spot in the rotation, keeping Prior around wouldn't be a bad idea.

It seems that Prior staying in San Diego does make a good fit. Low profile team, not expected to contend, and in a pitchers park, will all give him the opportunity to ease slowly back into pitching again.

He has to know that all he has to do is stay moderately healthy for one season and someone will be throwing multiple year offers with big dollars attached.

"He said he feels good, that his shoulder has never felt better."

Im not a Cubs fan so I cant tell you the exact number, but Im pretty sure we [the collective baseball community] have heard this at least 3 million times.

Agreed Laputian, if he's telling us it feels better than when he was throwing heat as a senior in high-school, then he's got some explaining to do.

Dodgers should give Prior the Randy Wolf Special $1M for 1yr, w/ a boat load of, best case scenario, incentives. A huge if, but, if he's healthy, he could be strong back of the rotation starter, or even re-invent himself as a potentially dominant middle reliever. At least until he proves he can stay healthy for a majority of the season.

It's funny, the start of the '09 season isn't some magical cutoff date for Prior's injury. We were also told that he'd be ready close to the start of '08, then wasn't it June? Before you knew it he was out for the year with surgery. All this is my way of saying that the guys injuries don't work on a schedule. I don't care how many reports come out about him being ready for the season, I'll believe it when I see it. This isn't anything more than his agent trying to get him a contract.

pageian - I am a Cubs fan, and you're right, this makes it about 3 million and 1, by my count. I seriously doubt his dedication and don't know why anybody keeps giving this guy money.

He is one former Cub that I would love the Cards to sign. He is better than some of the retreads that St. Louis has tried. Why not?

"For what it's worth, Kevin Towers mentioned back in June that Prior may be willing to take on a minor league deal with the Padres for '09, as a goodwill signing for stealing $1MM this year."

He must have stolen almost $10M from the Cubs. The worst was when he asked for more money in arbitration in 2007, and then never pitched an inning that year.

Like most other players that dude looks out for himself before his honor.

If Prior had any sense of decency or professionalism he'd do what Freddie Garcia did and prove his health first.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but the O's once tried to trade Tejada for him. Heh.

Redbirdfan, I don't see that happening after LaRussa's comments about Prior throughout "3 Nights in August." It might be interesting though to see how that relationship would work. :D

I've said it before: "I'll believe it when I see it."

This just in Mark Prior just slipped down 23 flights of stairs and broke every bone in his body. Also, the Yankees just signed him to a 3 year 27 million a year contract.

Whats he ready for? To head back to the DL?

I second finehamabounds.

Until Prior is on the mound for 10 straight starts and pitching adequately, I'll never believe that he's truly on his way back. He's just hurt me too much as a fan. jerk.

I find it funny a lot of you bash Prior for trying to get paid. Professionalism? Seriously? Any sense of decency? You guys are nuts. The guy is trying to get paid and make a living. I bet all of you are so professional you would turn down 7 figure money because it would be the right thing to do. Gimme a break. Prior really doesn't owe anything to anybody. He should be looking out for himself and his future, just like any human being doing any job in the world.

Gosh, why all the venom towards prior? I get he got hurt but man he's done everything in his power to play, had multiple surgerys, and has been an upstanding person. So he asked to be paid what an arbiter would decide on!!! Oh no he does what every player does when they go up for arbitration. I would sign prior all day for 1mill he's not asking for a five year deal. He's just saying he'll be ready. Do a thorough medical check up. If you don't like what you see don't sign him. But he didn't do anything wrong.
If I'm baltimore, san diego, or really any team I take out a flyer for sure.

I know how all the cubs fans besides me feel, but I'd kinda like to try Prior out again. Sign him to a cheap one year deal and see if he can pitch. What could it hurt?

"Gosh, why all the venom towards prior?"

I think it's just because he was praised as the next great pitcher and every Cubs fan got really excited. And then he turned out that 2003, where he truly was the next great pitcher. And then it all turned out to be teasing and he fell apart. That created a lot of animosity between him and Cubs fans, because fans are so obscenely disappointed by Prior's career.

I have no problem with Prior... It just seems like I've heard "I feel great" from him a few too many times to believe it. I hope he comes back and pitches well, but until I see him actually take the mound for several starts in a row, I have to assume he's crying wolf.

nrmax88,

Kerry Wood is someone who understands what it means to be a man.

And my point above was that Prior, in 2006, pitched less than 50 innings, but felt the need to go to arbitration with the Cubs because he thought he was worth more than that for the 2007 season. The funny thing about all of this was that Prior was pissed off at the Cubs after the 2007 season because they didn't want to offer him a guaranteed multiple year deal.

I get that he is trying to get his, and that is why I ended my last post by saying, "Like most other players that dude looks out for himself before his honor."

From Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Prior

"In the off-season, the Cubs reported that Prior suffers from a "loose shoulder" which leads to injuries and means he has to do more conditioning work. Being eligible for arbitration, Prior then proceeded to ask for a pay raise from his 2006 salary of $3.65 million to $3.875 million for 2007. The Cubs avoided arbitration with Prior when he settled for a one year $3.575 million contract for 2007."

don't know what prior's head is like whether he has the 'i-know-what's-best' attitude( a.k.a. 'i don't need no stinkin' pitching coach!') that allegedly inflicts the likes of marquis and bedard
but i think that from both a team's and his side, i think a bullpen situation is necessary. but not long relief. a 7th- or 8th-inning guy, pitch that one inning and build his arm up with relatively less pressure. always thought this guy could be the killer-closer moreso than his erstwhile 'pitching buddy' kerry wood
so, a 'perfect' scenario would be working alongside heath bell and studies under hoffman
pads have nothing to lose. then again, nobody's asking heath bell what he thinks

i agree with crash in that a bullpen role might better suit Prior for now....i would love to see my mets sign him, since they are mentioned as aggressive....he is high risk/high reward, i would have no problems with such a gamble.

"Prior is currently playing catch (well, maybe not right this second)."

Tim makes another funny!!!1!!1

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I wouldn't mind an offer to Prior with a minor league deal or a 1 million dollar salary with incentives. It really wasn't Priors fault what happened to him. Baker overworked him and Kerry Wood. Obviously the potential is there, it is just keeping him healthy, which is a big risk, but could also be a big reward.

I definitely see the Rangers going after Prior this year. Worst case scenario is he is a cheap bust and released. Best case would be a spot in the rotation at what 4-5? I can't see a se mi health Prior being any worse than the current options. i think a likely scenario puts him in the long relief roll in the bull-pen of an organization.

The Rangers have had success with this in recent years: Gagne, Lofton, and Bradley to name a few....

Prior will be a Cardinal if the Padres don't want him back.

Kevin Towers owns GM of the Year next year if Peavy is traded for a haul of talent, and Prior puts up Peavy-like numbers.

Crazier things have happened in baseball...

Somebody will sign him to a minor league contract...I can see the Padres resigning him or the Cardinals,Astros,Brewers, and Rangers signing him.

Of course he's interested in re-joining the Padres, who wouldn't want to get paid for doing nothing.

WestCoastBias - actually, I can't think of anything crazier than that.

i hope the padres resign him to a similar or hopefully downgraded offer. maybe incentives to be able to be the same but a lower base. i would also like to see prior move to the bullpen. make it a little easier on his arm. worked for wood.

maybe he should just be a fastball changeup guy. he could get away with that in the pen

I give even odds on Prior getting less than 5 mediocre starts before injuring himself himself for the season... and no it's not venom towards him, just a bet based on recent history.

its not a bad bet to say he doesnt make one start

I was being "nice"

Don't get me wrong, a small offer might be worth the risk... c'mon, if padilla, silva, etc can get north of 10M a year and give virtually no production in return... well let's put it this way, sometimes that scratchers ticket you buy will give you back more than your investment... though odds are burning your money is a better investment.

I could see Prior being the type of rehab pitching project that Theo Epstein likes to sighn each year like he did with Bartolo Colon, Wade Miller, Dan Kolb, etc.. Each year. That is, unless Prior thinks he wants to start like 20 games or so and be a *star* pitcher on a team instead of a fill in for a few games.

How effective can Prior be throwing in the 80's? His shoulder injury was devastating and went untreated/undiagnosed for years. Looking at how much trouble Wade Miller, Bartolo Colon, Mark Mulder, Matt Clement, and Freddy Garcia have had trying to come back from less serious shoulder surgeries makes me think Prior won't ever pitch with much success. A true tragedy brought on by Dusty and the Cubs organization.

are people still talking about how dusty overused him. what because he threw 120 pitches a game? do you realize pitchers in the 70's threw as many as 300 pitches a game?
