« Tigers Interested In Lyon | Main | Odds and Ends: Burrell, Atkins, Ohmura »
5:01pm: Scott Miller of CBSSports.com says the Rockies are prepared to turn around and trade Street to another team.
4:08pm: Gonzalez confirmed his inclusion in the trade in a phone call to Jorge L. Ortiz of USA Today.
3:42pm: A Rockies spokesman told the AP that talks are fluid, and "everything's speculation." Heyman is now aboard with Gonzalez/Smith/Street as the package. Seems solid for one year of Holliday and the accompanying draft picks.
3:20pm: Susan Slusser spoke to Smith, who is flying to Denver for a physical. She agrees that Street and Gonzalez are the other two players.
2:54pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick confirmed Smith is in the deal.
2:39pm: Troy Renck says the A's had been offering Street and Gonzalez. Meanwhile ESPN adds Ryan Sweeney and Gonzalez to their mix of players discussed.
2:30pm: Brown says the two teams have agreed in principle to a deal that will send Gonzalez, Smith, and Street to the Rockies.
2:24pm: The ESPN report now says Brett Anderson was under discussion as well as Smith.
2:03pm: The ESPN guys talked to A's assistant GM David Forst, who said, "It's still an ongoing discussion."
2:00pm: Ken Rosenthal chimes in. The deal may not be finalized for about 48 hours. Players discussed over the weekend: Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street, and Smith. Rosenthal says the A's do not plan to flip Holliday or trade him in July. Rosenthal also says the A's could increase payroll to as high as $80MM, which could mean $25-30MM to play with.
1:57pm: ESPN's Buster Olney and Jerry Crasnick say the two teams have agreed to terms, and believe pitcher Greg Smith was under discussion.
1:51pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown also says a deal is close.
1:27pm: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the A's traded for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday. More as it comes in!

WOW!!! really didnt see that coming!
Posted by: cubs land | November 10, 2008 at 01:29 PM
Beane finally trades prospects? Wierd. I wonder if they will be able to extend him. Don't the A's have some money to throw around?
Posted by: bbxxj | November 10, 2008 at 01:29 PM
Totally out of left field....
Posted by: Bdlugz | November 10, 2008 at 01:30 PM
Very exciting! Hopefully the Rockies didn't get too much.
Posted by: cheba63 | November 10, 2008 at 01:31 PM
Holy crap... that was a complete shock. I knew that they were in the running, but I never expected the A's to actually get him. Can't wait to find out who was dealt for him.
Posted by: Colton | November 10, 2008 at 01:31 PM
Makes sense.
I hope its for Cahill + Anderson
Posted by: Kenan and Kel | November 10, 2008 at 01:32 PM
Yea really out of left field
Posted by: cmdterps44 | November 10, 2008 at 01:32 PM
I dont think they extended him. Wouldnt we have heard about a 72 hour window to discuss an extension if they had? This says they got him..doesnt mention a contingency..and this really did come from nowhere.
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | November 10, 2008 at 01:32 PM
tim.... beane will flip him in july won't he?
Posted by: mr utley | November 10, 2008 at 01:33 PM
That would depend on where the A's are in the standings and how much better than two draft picks the offers are.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 01:36 PM
All I can say is...WOW
Hopefully they are beginning the process of contending every year. I hope the Rangers are cemented in third or worse for a long while, we can really see Beane outwork Daniels.
Posted by: kinsler5 | November 10, 2008 at 01:36 PM
The Rockies were linked to Duchscherer during the summer, so he could be in the mix. But who knows, really.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 01:36 PM
i always wondered if there is a method to beanes madness, the jury is still out as far as im concerned...
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 01:36 PM
talent wise... they aren't even close to anaheim right?
Posted by: mr utley | November 10, 2008 at 01:37 PM
"Totally out of left field...."
"Yea really out of left field"
Or in Left Field, in Holliday's case ;-)
I guess hitting in that cavern along with a bunch of games in Anaheim and Seattle will show if Holliday's bat really does play outside of Coors.
Posted by: AA | November 10, 2008 at 01:37 PM
Dumb move by Beane. No chance Boras agrees to an extension before free agency next year. Holliday will have a huge year and leave and Oakland will miss the playoffs again.
Posted by: njbraves | November 10, 2008 at 01:38 PM
Maybe not this year, but with that system and the young guys they have, combined with the lack of up and coming players in Anaheim, they should be competing for the division soon.
Posted by: Kenan and Kel | November 10, 2008 at 01:38 PM
This move seems to be very low-risk for the A's ... they get a marquis player, which might attract other, established talent. And, if he doesn't agree to a multi-year deal, they pick up two decent draft picks in the following year.
Posted by: rossdfarian | November 10, 2008 at 01:38 PM
"Or in Left Field, in Holliday's case ;-)"
Hah I've been waiting for that
Posted by: Scottsdale01 | November 10, 2008 at 01:39 PM
"Dumb move by Beane."
You have no idea who he traded for Holliday and already know it's a dumb move.
You must be a genius of some sort.
Posted by: Kenan and Kel | November 10, 2008 at 01:39 PM
Are you kidding me. A couple days ago he was almost Cardinal, now trade talks break off and he becomes an A within one day. I thought the A's had enough OF's. Im very curious what the package was from Oakland.
Posted by: JP | November 10, 2008 at 01:40 PM

I don't see why Beane would want or try to sign Holliday to an extension. Pretty hard to call it a dumb move without seeing the players involved.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Jon Heyman is the only person that reported this, so it might not be true. He has a history of being wrong.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 10, 2008 at 01:41 PM
dont forget he can pass him over...and that way effectively swap some pitching talent for hitting talent
Posted by: viktor06 | November 10, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Finally some action. And if this is a taste a thing to come, the free agency should be fun.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | November 10, 2008 at 01:42 PM
I'm thinking Travis Buck and a minor league pitcher like Cahill or Anderson. But that does seem a little steep for Beane.
Posted by: schellis | November 10, 2008 at 01:42 PM
I dont think Holliday or Boras will be pleased with this. Playing in a huge field like this is likely to make Hollidays numbers tail off which could result in a smaller contract next offseason
Posted by: Adam | November 10, 2008 at 01:42 PM
waiting on the full deal.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 01:42 PM
the athletics need a franchise player to open up their new ballpark and sell jerseys, they just landed him. I'm really hoping they overpaid...
Posted by: txrangers22 | November 10, 2008 at 01:43 PM
They get a MARQUEE player, much different from a Marquis player, which no team wants. XD
Crazy move. I like it for the A's. Ol' Beanie working his magic. Thank goodness my Cards didn't bite.
Posted by: Zoop | November 10, 2008 at 01:43 PM
At one point the article said the A's acquired Holliday, but now it says they're closing in on a deal.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 01:43 PM
Duchscherer makes sense, along with one of their 2B prospect surplus, and an OF

McAfee Coliseum deflates RH HRs by 18%, while Coors inflates them by 23%. According to the Bill James handbook.

"Maybe not this year, but with that system and the young guys they have, combined with the lack of up and coming players in Anaheim, they should be competing for the division soon."
Riiiight. I don't see how Matt Holliday makes a 25 game difference.

if the A's traded Cardenas, Spencer, Gio Gonzalez and Josh Outman as a phils fan I'll be pissed!!!
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 10, 2008 at 01:45 PM
ESPN is sometimes a tad slow to admit being outscooped. My guess, they are having their guys make calls so they don't have to cite Heyman's report.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Maybe the Rockies are trading him cheap in hopes to be able to afford to re-sign him once that ballpark puts his numbers in check.
Posted by: walkoffblast | November 10, 2008 at 01:47 PM
Did he jump the gun on reporting this one?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 01:47 PM
I don't see how this makes sense unless Holliday was had for very little (which I can't see happening).
With Holliday and even another FA or 2 the A's still won't be better than the Angels. So, Holliday becomes a one year rental on a 2nd place club. Not sure that makes any sense.
Like everyone else I am very excited to see how Holliday plays outside of Coors. If he posts a 950+ OPS he will be in line for a huge contract come the end of the year.

Im happy the Cardinals didn't end up acquiring Holliday. I think he would have cost too much in terms of $ and prospects.
Posted by: JP | November 10, 2008 at 01:50 PM
Angels did win a lot of close games and will likely lose k-rod.
Posted by: walkoffblast | November 10, 2008 at 01:50 PM
"McAfee Coliseum deflates RH HRs by 18%, while Coors inflates them by 23%. According to the Bill James handbook."
Lets say Holliday is in his 2007 (best season) form. He hit 36 HR that year. If they were inflated 23%, that means approximately 28 HR in a standard park. Then deflate accordingly in Oakland and you get approximately 23. Also, his AVG probably goes down because at least some of those extra HR end up as cans of corn.
I can see Holliday being pissed about this one.
Posted by: AA | November 10, 2008 at 01:51 PM
No way Cahill or Anderson are involved. It is going to be a deal like Sweeney/Buck and a low level pitching prospect in Vince Mazarro, H. Rodriguez, or the Rockies may even want Fautino De Los Santos as a project after he recovers from Tommy John.
My prediction is Sweeney, Mazarro, and De Los Santos for Holliday

***if the A's traded Cardenas, Spencer, Gio Gonzalez and Josh Outman as a phils fan I'll be pissed!!!***
HAHAHA! I guess there would be some sort of irony or something involved there.
Posted by: RuffinTumble | November 10, 2008 at 01:52 PM
im sure its true, if not its very close and its just a matter of that fourth player or something stupid. but it still doesnt make sense, he wont produce the same amount in oakland as he did in colorado being a righty, he doesnt have a power hitter dh type to save him some atbats, unless you count cust which i dont see why people tout him so high, he will get alot of walks to get around him, his value will decrease when his numbers come down, so he wont be able to flip him, and hitting still really isnt a large problem for the A's. unless they sign giambi to bat in front of him and revamp the hitting lineup now, this makes hardly any sense...
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 01:52 PM
I agree with Juice no way Cahill or Anderson go. Maybe Carter, mid level P prospect, maybe Smith in some combo with an OF.
Posted by: kinsler5 | November 10, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Love this deal for the A's. I really think Holliday became almost UNDERvalued as everyone clammored over the Coors stats. I think he'll still put out a .290-25-100 line in Oakland with a .870ish OPS, which in that park is great, and worth the package as long as Beane didn't get carried away.
Does this mean Giambi could still sign or no? Cust at DH, Giambi at 1B, Holliday in LF (I assume he can't play RF), leaving Barton as the odd man out in a trade (this one?) or a Giambi signing unlikely?
I guess Colorado has no need for Barton unless they can flip Helton then as well. Could be an interesting or boring offseason in Oakland after this move. Gutsy move by Beane though. If they could somehow squeeze in Giambino, a middle of the lineup with Cust/Holliday/Giambi would be pretty formidable.
"My prediction is Sweeney, Mazarro, and De Los Santos for Holliday"
That makes a lot of sense to me. I like Sweeney a lot, would enjoy seeing him in Coors.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 01:55 PM
Love how Angels fans are sweating this deal...the AL West is now Oaklands to lose if they didnt give up any of their top 5 prospects.
The Angels were an 88 win team last year, the A's 76, their luck was just huge and it showed come playoff time.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 01:56 PM
ESPN.com is now reporting the deal is all but done.

Athletic Domination -
Show me ONE Angels fan sweating this deal. go ahead.... i'll wait.
88 win team? try 100!
Posted by: bseballcrzy17 | November 10, 2008 at 02:01 PM
Could Street be a part of this deal? Is that too much for Oakland to pay? We all know Colorado needs a closer..
I wouldn't proclaim the A's as contenders yet, but if the young guys can continue to come along, they can get a few breaks and stay healthy, and sign a few more guys, it could be an interesting race.
I still think Giambi over Barton is a move that needs to be made if they want to compete. Perhaps Barton can get some seasoning in AAA for a bit. The production lost there with him last year was too much.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 02:01 PM
You guys are right. Matt Holliday doesn't improve the A's enough to where they are able to beat last year's Angels team. However, there is no gurantee that Teixeira or Rodriguez will be back, and the A's don't have any quality players coming for free agency. So as of right now, the A's are better than a Rodriguez/Teixeira less Angels team.
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:01 PM
Houston Street back to the Rockies makes a lot of sense...

And the Angels (I believe) were baseball's most lucky team last year by the numbers. They were an 88 win team by the numbers (which are usually very close).
Nothing wrong with that of course, as a win is a win after the fact, but going forward, this shouldn't be seen as an 100 win team again unless there's some big improvements.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 02:02 PM
WHAT THE HELL!!!
This. Makes. ZERO. Sense. Unless. There's. An. Extension. Coming.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Without seeing whose involved, my guess would be a package of:
OF Carlos Gonzalez
RP James Simmons
OF Aaron Cunningham
LHP Greg Smith
Or if Colorado wants a MLB pitcher, Justin Duscherer could be an option, since Beane would be selling while his value is at the highest.
I don't think every player I listed above will be moved, but I can see a package involving some of those players going to Colorado.
No way do I see him including Cahill or Anderson, Beane knows what hes getting in return (either a trade a the all star break for a big young talent or two draft picks in the 2010 draft). Cahill and Anderson are keepers.
Posted by: jvg019 | November 10, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Peep the Angels pythag W-L, luck will always shine through, the Angels were lucky last year.
AA hates the A's and is sweating this.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 02:03 PM
"I'm thinking Travis Buck and a minor league pitcher like Cahill or Anderson. But that does seem a little steep for Beane."
If Cahill or Anderson is in the deal, I will be sick. Please Billy, keep Cahill and Anderson away from anyone else. Gallagher too.

if thats the haul, im warming to the deal for beane
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 02:03 PM
First of all, the AL West was much closer then the standings show last season. Secondly, the Angels are aging and declining in several positions where as the A's are young and getting better. Lastly, you better believe that if Beane aquired Holliday this WILL NOT BE HIS LAST MOVE. This means they are going for it, and will likley add a couple more pieces.
Posted by: jpshark | November 10, 2008 at 02:04 PM
The Angels were lucky. They far outplayed their run differential, and it's not likely to happen again.
This doesn't make sense for the A's though. Beane can't possibly believe Holliday will put up his Coors Field numbers in the cavern of Oakland Colliseum??
Posted by: Hyro | November 10, 2008 at 02:04 PM
"Lets say Holliday is in his 2007 (best season) form. He hit 36 HR that year. If they were inflated 23%, that means approximately 28 HR in a standard park. Then deflate accordingly in Oakland and you get approximately 23. Also, his AVG probably goes down because at least some of those extra HR end up as cans of corn."
Your assuming he hit 36 HRs at home. You would need to redo this equation using his HR totals at coors instead of total HRs. Plus factor in that he would play in Texas instead of Petco. Overall i think hes a good enough hitter that he will still produce, i doubt this is the only move they make.
Posted by: chicubs25 | November 10, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Gonzalez, Street and Smith is kind of awful for Oakland.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM
How is a deal close if they have not decided on the players? That makes little sense. They just decided, hey lets mix it up, we will get a case, sit back and argue for two days and then trade holliday?
Posted by: walkoffblast | November 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM
Wow. Didnt see that coming.
Posted by: YankeeFan4life | November 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM
I'm bleh about Carlos Gonzalez.
I'm OK with losing Street and Smith though.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM
The A's are not better than the Angels, at all. Closers mean very little. Arradondo can step in next year and close 50 games, and Kendry Morales is a stud. Even with the less of Teixeira (pending), the Angels are still better.
About the trade: Depends on who the A's traded, this deal is incredible for them. If the sources are right, and they only lost Greg Smith, a guy who isn't all that good, and by only I mean top prospect/names, then the deal favors the A's. At the end of the year Holliday walks and Billy Beane takes his compensation picks.
Posted by: baseballismylyf4 | November 10, 2008 at 02:06 PM
Gonzalez, Street and Smith seems about right. It fits nicely for both sides.
Posted by: davidmp2 | November 10, 2008 at 02:06 PM
Street, Smith, Gonzales, Denorfia.
Posted by: RuffinTumble | November 10, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Now things are gonna heat up...Boras is probably loving this deal
Posted by: JasonV | November 10, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Read the rosenthal piece. Like I am making fun of he basically says he knows nothing except it is rumored to be close and names random players he has heard discussed saying he has no clue if any or all of them are in the deal. So I would not put a lot of stock in those three names.
Posted by: walkoffblast | November 10, 2008 at 02:08 PM
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that Street and Sweeney are involved with another good prospect or two average ones. That deal makes a ton of sense for both sides. Hawpe to LF, Sweeney in RF or CF. Street as the new closer. Lot of flexibility there and the A's don't lose a ton as they were already planning to dump Street I would imagine.
Still would think you would have heard a peep about it in the reports. Hm.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 02:08 PM
I don't think Gonzalez, Street and Smith are all involved for sure. These are just guys that were being discussed at the meetings. I think that would be too much to give up unless Beane is planning on throwing Holliday a 6/120 offer right out of the gate.
Posted by: jpshark | November 10, 2008 at 02:08 PM
Playing 9 games in Dodger Stadium, 9 games in Petco, and 9 games in San Fran can't help either.
Posted by: Teetz | November 10, 2008 at 02:09 PM
"I don't think Gonzalez, Street and Smith are all involved for sure. "
Gonzalez is too much. I could live with Smith, Street, and Sweeney/Buck, but that's about it.
Gonzalez and Cunningham go nowhere.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 02:10 PM
Beane would have to be crazy to offer Holliday a six-year $100 mil+ extension without watching him play at least half a season first. I hope he doesn't do anything crazy.
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM
If Beane throws a 6/120 offer to Holliday, the whole thing becomes worse for the A's.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Gonzalez would absolutely MASH in Coors in a few years. That thought is terrifying.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Just posted on the other thread about the Cards deal being dead.
My best guess was Street, Patterson, and Eveland for Holliday and a mid-level prospect.
Since Smith is being talked about so much though, I'll stick him in for Eveland, but I think the A's have to get something pretty decent back in that case.
Or maybe just Street and Smith?
However, if it's true the Rockies could have gotten Ludwick (even just straight up), then they totally blew this one. Holliday's one of the most overrated players - especially on a one-year deal where he's making $13.5M, even considering the draft picks he'll net.
Posted by: bobo | November 10, 2008 at 02:11 PM
"Now things are gonna heat up...Boras is probably loving this deal"
Why? Because you think it could set off a domino effect of deals?
He's probably not loving Holliday to McAfee, not good arbitrage going from Coors to there for Matt's walk year
Plus I could see him getting 30 IBBs in that lineup
Posted by: wayne gomes | November 10, 2008 at 02:12 PM
I think the sun explodes before beane gives any player 20 million a year.

If Colorado gets two of Smith, Gonzalez and Street, theyd be getting the better deal in my mind.
Posted by: Showtime35 | November 10, 2008 at 02:13 PM
WOW, totally out of nowhere.
Why would the A's give up prospects for him for a 1 year rental player? It's not like they're going ANYWHERE in 2009. What a waste of prospects if you ask me.
Posted by: Spieg7 | November 10, 2008 at 02:14 PM
"Closers mean very little. Arradondo can step in next year and close 50 games, and Kendry Morales is a stud."
Your bullpen still declines if you lose Rodriguez. Although bullpens are not the most important thing in the world, you can't just write it off as if it doesn't matter to your team's success.
Comparing a minor leaguer to a PROVEN all star first baseman is stupid. Morales can't replace Tex'.
Face facts. The older outfielders on your team will be declining sooner or later, and you are in position to lose two of your team's best players. Just face facts. Your team overperformed last season, and you are most likely going to be worse next season
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Rosenthal already wrote that the A's don't plan to flip Holliday.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 02:15 PM
my prediction for Holliday for 2009.
.270 avg
20 HR
70 R
75 RBI's
Boras has got to be twisting in the wind with this and I for one love it!!
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 10, 2008 at 02:15 PM
Tim do you agree that this was a waste of PROSPECTS for the A's?
Posted by: Spieg7 | November 10, 2008 at 02:15 PM
"Closers mean very little. Arradondo can step in next year and close 50 games, and Kendry Morales is a stud. Even with the less of Teixeira (pending), the Angels are still better."
How can you say that closers are overrated. The Cardinals did not have a real reliable closer last year and because of that, our bullpen/closer committee blew 30+ saves last year. Just think what where they could have been with just a fraction of those wins. They may have been able to win the Central division.
Now we agree, the A's were nowhere close to the Angels this year. The Angels were the team to beat last year, espeically in the AL West. However, if Beane agrees Holliday and then makes another move or two smartly, the A's could be very competitive next year.

man, looking at the era's and averages and other statistics of oakland, they have to be the most average team in baseball, there is not one over exceptional (until maybe today) nor awful player to be found on the team

"Why would the A's give up prospects for him for a 1 year rental player? It's not like they're going ANYWHERE in 2009. What a waste of prospects if you ask me."
You do realize that the AL West is a wide open division for 2009, right? There is no favorite
