| Mets Prioritize Pitching »

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has all kinds of Braves info, found in the body and comments of his latest blog post.
- The Braves have expressed interest in Ryan Ludwick, and the Cardinals would be willing to take Kelly Johnson or Yunel Escobar in return. However, the Braves would probably have to include one of their middle infielders in a Jake Peavy deal and don't want to trade both this winter.
- Braves GM Frank Wren publicly acknowledged the Peavy trade talks. O'Brien believes a package built around Escobar has a chance. Pitching prospect Tommy Hanson is not available. The Braves don't have interest in Khalil Greene, by the way.
- The Braves aren't looking to sign health risk-starters like Ben Sheets and Brad Penny.
- The Braves have an eye on the available White Sox veterans: Jermaine Dye, Nick Swisher, and Javier Vazquez.
- The latest word on Atlanta's offer to Junichi Tazawa: a $4-5MM signing bonus and a four-year contract, which wouldn't be counted against '09 payroll. Speaking of Tazawa - the Rangers are in on him too.
- The Braves are not shopping Jeff Francoeur. His name has not surfaced in trade talks.
I thought we had a rumor that Francoeur was being shopped. Who is not telling the truth here?

Just found out that the Cardinals would take either Escobar or KJ in the deal for Ludwick. Don’t know if they’d have to include anything else.
That deal will be held up by the Peavy matter, probably, because Braves don’t want to trade both their middle infielders in the same offseason.

braves were just interested in seeing what he worth, gm's are just staring down at his 08 year so hes probably worth garbage right now.
Wow if braves can acquire ludwick, and peavy they will still have about 30 mill to spend. That will be interesting

"Wow if braves can acquire ludwick, and peavy they will still have about 30 mill to spend. That will be interesting"
We could go ahead and sign Furcal and resign Smoltz, Glavine, Hampton, and a RP arm with the rest.

Regarding a couple of specific rumors -- that Kelly Johnson could be part of a deal with the Braves in exchange for Ryan Ludwick, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and that Adam Kennedy might be of interest to the Diamondbacks, per the Arizona Republic -- Mozeliak acknowledged to MLB.com that he's had plenty of conversations, but asserted that nothing has advanced that far, yet.

It isn't likely the Braves will land Ludwick and Peavy. The Braves had said they wont trade both middle infielders. So unless a deal for Peavy is worked without Escobar the Ludwick thing may not happen.

Why not trade Escobar and Johnson, they have Infante and Prado. Most likely, they will have to give one of them up in a trade for a good player. Their choices are Dunn, Ibanez, and Ramirez. Which all three will require mostly $15+ million. So, that leaves Braves without Peavy or without a leftfielder.

cardsfan,
Just throwing this out there, but that article was from nearly 4 hours before DOB's most recent post that's quoted above, so perhaps conversations have progressed some since then.

How about Vazquez and Swisher for a deal centered around Kelly Johnson and one of our young athletic outfielders, Josh Anderson or Blanco. Im sure it would take some other pieces but that should be a start.
Posted by: tsweet9000 | November 05, 2008 at 08:35 PM
Neither Infante or Prado are considered true short stops. They both can fill in there but are not every day shortstops.
Posted by: tsweet9000 | November 05, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Disregard my previous post ... O'brien just said the Braves do consider Infante an option at short.

tsweet9000,
I believe the White Sox are already planning on Gordham Beckham moving to 2B fulltime in the minors next season. I honestly don't see them being that interested in a deal centered around KJ.
Posted by: nixa37 | November 05, 2008 at 08:44 PM
Yeah nixa, I didn't see that when I posted.

This is all good news for Hawks fan.
First off, we have a shot of getting Peavy without trading Hanson. I am a huge Escobar fan but as a knowledgeable and practical baseball fan I realize you have to trade talent in order to get talent. Its honestly a good swap for both teams. I assume the Braves will throw in some B level prospects possibly Lillibridge, Anderson, Jones and Jo Jo. Those are just a few names I am going to toss around not saying they will get it done.
Secondly, "The Braves don't have interest in Khalil Greene, by the way." is awesome news. Khalil is a weird player. He had a great power bat two years ago but his average and OBP were horrible. His average, OBP and defense has always been average at best. I do not like him one bit. The pricey contract is also a sore spot.
Lastly, thankfully we have no interest in injury plagued players. Good move Frank! We dont need people who can be good we need people who will consistently be pitching and playing!
Oh and BTW good move not shopping our hometown hero!
Posted by: ChiefTomahawk | November 05, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Chief,
If you're ripping Greene for his poor OBP, why the crush on "hometown hero" Francouer?
Away from Petco, Greene's OBP/SLG/OPS, you name it, were better than Frenchy's in 2006 and 2007.
Frenchy has until the deadline in 2009 to erase the memories of 2008. If he doesn't, he's gone, even if the Braves can't get anything more than a box of rocks for him.
Posted by: ink-stained scribe | November 05, 2008 at 09:41 PM
Francoeur beat Greene in nearly every possible stat their is.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 05, 2008 at 09:52 PM
JRD,
Francouer (overall):
2006 .260/.293/.449
2007 .293/.338/.444
Greene (on the road):
2006 .280/.356/.507
2007 .288/.322/.519
Dude has more power and better plate discipline if you get him out of that cavern.
He's a decent player away from Petco. Better than Francouer is anywhere.
Posted by: ink-stained scribe | November 05, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Im a huge braves fan and I will gladly ship off Frenchy for anything useful. The reason his name hasnt come up in trade talks is because no one wants the worst everyday RF'r in baseball from last year. Well maybe Dayton Moore still has a crush on him. The guy is useless
from 91 till now (300 ab's) only two times has a Braves OF posted a sub .300 OBP for the Braves
Jeff Francoeur 2006 .293
Jeff Francoeur 2008 .294

wren was interviewed on a san diego radio station yesterday and when asked if hanson was untouchable he would not say that he was or wasnt.
Posted by: bkoke | November 05, 2008 at 10:22 PM
now Frenchy and Khalil in the same lineup, well that might kill me.
Lets add Andruw in LF, Lillibridge at SS, and Tavares in CF...we may beat out the Royals for worst team OBP
Posted by: csg | November 05, 2008 at 10:23 PM
bkoke, everyone close to the org that has inside info have stated repeatedly that Hanson, Heyward, and Freeman are untouchable
Posted by: csg | November 05, 2008 at 10:24 PM
im not saying hes not it was just interesting to hear strait from wrens mouth that he refused to say whether he was untouchable or not. if he is untouchable why not say it?
Posted by: bkoke | November 05, 2008 at 11:21 PM
the braves org has always or in the JS era been pretty quiet about all trades, who they are talking to, and who may be available. Wren may be doing the same, who knows
Posted by: csg | November 05, 2008 at 11:34 PM
that could be true but if he said before hanson is untouchable why wouldnt he stick with it?
Posted by: bkoke | November 05, 2008 at 11:40 PM
The one SD fan who posted about the radio interview characterized Wren's attitude as being along the line of whatever you're SD radio guys I'm not telling you anything. Think about it seriously for a minute, why would Wren go on a SD radio station and give them a scoop over the Braves own beat writer.
Posted by: nixa37 | November 05, 2008 at 11:57 PM
You can not compare Greene and Frenchy. They don't even play the same position!
As for Hanson uncertainty of whether he will be traded Wren has stated several times he is not trading Hanson.
Posted by: ChiefTomahawk | November 06, 2008 at 12:04 AM
why would he tell one person hanson is not available then turn around and refuse to comment?
Posted by: bkoke | November 06, 2008 at 02:13 AM
Here's an article about the Cardinals possibly trading Ludwick or Ankiel...

Frenchy was hurt last year he is a gamer and went out and played thru it. If you watch the Braves your could really see it in the field when balls kept flying over his head. I think Jeff will bounce back and put up good numbers this year.
