« Twins Interested In Street? | Main | Odds and Ends: Pettitte, Zaun, Blanco »
It seems that the Rockies will send left fielder Matt Holliday to the A's for Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith, and Huston Street soon (assuming Smith's elbow checks out). While the A's were rumored to be in the mix for Holliday, the trade still comes as a surprise to most. Let's round up today's links on the topic.

I don't see Oakland competing this year.
The trade doesn't make too much sense to me. Why give up Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith and Huston Street for a one year rental who most likely wont help (all that much) beat Anaheim?
I realize that theyll most likely flip him at the trade deadline but why trade for him anyway? They're not going to receive a package like they gave up? Nowhere close...especially if Holliday's number decrease from playing in Oakland (which is highly likely in a pitchers park with no offensive protection around him)

Depressed Fan is a bit off: He's talking about Oakland taking on $13.5MM in salary but its really $8MM or less (even if Holliday stays all year) because you have to net out Street's arb award. He's getting pretty expensive for a reliever.

Greg Smith is not anything special in the least, and probably a bit below average. If they're down on Street as much as I think, it's essentially a year of Holliday and two first round picks for a below average starter, a good reliever, and a stud prospect. Not a horrible deal.

Thats a great point Not Joe.
They had a boatload of money to spend and this move really did not take too big a chunk of it.
Sure Street was a valuable commidity, but with Hoffman now on the market , Kevin Gregg apparently next to be traded in the Marlins garage sale, and K-Rod's asking price seemingly coming down, the closer market has changed dramatically. You may not be able to get the super package for a closer that you once thought you could when it was only K-Rod and Fuentes.

how many time does this need to be repeated...
A's have in house options that they feel can replace what they gave up
smith...gio/outman/braden plus 4 or 5 high end pitching prospects set for AA/AAA
street...devine/ziegler/blevins/casilla/brown/gray...plus4 other relievers in AA/AAA
cargon...i hate giving up on him but he's no sure thing either...sweeney/cunningham are the same age with much more polished hitting approaches. travis buck can you stay healthy?

Of course Holliday's dad wants to see him in Pinstripes...greedy bastard
"If my son gets $20M a year from the Yankees he'll buy me a house!"

If the Rockies are thinking about trading Street for Ludwick then they better be throwing another player in there as well.

Holliday could buy his dad 20 houses.

I think the post actually says that the A's might be dangling Street to the Cards for Ludwick. Not positive but that's what I'm understanding. Man that would be a stacked lineup. Then we'd probably include one of Travis Buck, Aaron Cunningham, or Ryan Sweeney. If this deals happening, please don't let it be Sweeney, the kid could be a HUGE star. And we just gave up our other future super-star.

If your going to get a rental player:
29 years old, Boras client in a walk year, and a $13.5 million salary are excellent conditions to get one in.
After Manny's performance for the Dodgers last year, maybe the value of these half-year rentals is going up. The Red Sox netted Bay (for Manny), and the Indians netted LaPorta (for Sabathia).

Ari...learn to read first and then comment. How would the A's trade a guy in street (whom they just traded to colorado) to the cards for ludwick??? C'mon man catch up with whats going on and then comment.

The gammons piece is pretty interesting. Especially when looking at some of the teams that already appear to be making moves with money heavily on the mind.

It's always been Beane's approach to be rebuild *and* stay competitive. One reason he traded away Haren, Swisher, Harden, Blanton & Kotsay was to have depth in the farm system. The point of that depth was to be able to make other moves.
He sacrificed one year to evaluate the influx of talent and now he's making a move to get back into an AL West which is (and has been for some time) a two team league. It's down to the A's and the Angels.
While Street, Smith and Gonzalez all have value, they're also easily replaced by the new depth the A's have acquired. Street is replaced by Ziegler and Devine. Smith is replaced by one of: Outman, Gio, Cahill, or Anderson. Gonzo is replaced by Cunningham or Sweeney in Center, with Holliday in left, and Buck or Sweeney or Patterson or Murton in Right. They just need a bopper at first base - like Giambi - and they're in contention.
