« Odds and Ends: Phillies, Blake, Pedro | Main | C.C. Sabathia Rumors: Thursday »
Matthew Cerrone has the latest from Mets GM Omar Minaya.
Even though Aaron Heilman sees himself as a starter, Minaya still prefers to have him coming out of the bullpen. Heilman hasn't started a game since 2005.
Minaya says the Mets are going to focus on pitching for the time being. After that, he'll see where the Mets stand and consider adding outfielding help.
Daniel Murphy, who just pulled a hamstring in the AFL, will play mostly in left field next year. Though he could play some first, Minaya didn't mention Murphy as an option at second base.

Just start Heilman in spring training to stop his whining. Who knows he might actually do something.

The one thing that worries me is that The Mets will tarde off Heilman and he will turn right into a WORK horse. Pitching 8 solid innings every game. So I say give the man a chance or make sure WE get someone OR something spectacular in return. Minaya had done good things for this team but he has done bad. I am not one to dwell on the bad but honestly Minaya did not deserve that contract extension at all.
Has a Met fan I always hope for the best so I wish my team luck and smart shopping this off season. Cant wait for the first deal.

Go ahead and trade Heilman. He stinks and I'm tired of his complaining. I know I may be wanting too much but get me: Manny, Fuentes and Lowe: http://www.ontheblack.com/2008/11/17/all-i-want-for-the-holidays-is/

The guy only has 2 pitches, and they aren't dominate pitches. I think they should trade him while he still has some value. Other teams around the league seem to like him for some reason as a starter. Mets need to rebuild that entire pen badly.

"The one thing that worries me is that The Mets will tarde off Heilman and he will turn right into a WORK horse."
Oh, of course. No doubt that will happen once the Mets move him. He will probably end up in St Louis or Oakland and become a 200 inning 15 game winner with a 4.00ish era.
The people who use the "he only has 2 pitches" garbage when stating the case against him are a joke. John Maine throws one pitch. Sure, he throws a changeup and a slider, but both are just awful pitches with no consistency whatsoever and he gets by okay. Heilman's second best pitch is easily better then Maine's. Mike Pelfrey also throws a slider and a changeup, and those pitches also are not plus ML pitches because they are not consistent and he cannot locate them. Johan Santana works primarily with a Fastball/Changeup combo, and doesn't throw a very good slider. Atleast he barely used it in 08, and still pitched great. Oliver Perez also only throws two pitches. That is the Mets whole staff. Heilman has a plus fastball, a 2 seam fastball, and a very good changeup. He also has a slider that is nothing special, but it isn't much worse off then Pelf or Maine's sliders. He may or may not have success as a starter, but he certainly has the quality stuff to be a starter.
Now I understand if you don't want him in the rotation, but at least come up with an legit reason, and not just some stupid reason that you copied from some other tool that doesn't know what he is talking about either.

the biggest story in this article is that Murphy pulled his hamstring. Hopefully for Mets fans he's OK to start the season. Similarly to the Heilman/Madson comparison I see a future Murphy/Donald comparison to be very intriguing.
And nrmax you are right. Maine has one pitch and my team still can't hit it. He's been the bain of our existence since he came into the NL and one of the main reasons you guys lost (and no one talks about) is when he went down. For some reason people have forgotten about him.
I do agree that Heilman can be very good given the right opportunity, but like Lidge, he'll need to have that somewhere else because he's mentally shot in NYC right now. I haven't heard but I'm sure the local radio (WFAN) has to be destroying Heilman for this talk.

That'd probably just be Mike Francessa ranting to himself about useless/made-up stats and stories like he does all the time.

Actually I was referring to "whiny" Evan Roberts and Joe "Chicken Little" Benigno.

Does Heilman even have that much value to him? What would they even get back in return, a mid-level prospect? Tell Heilman to F off and have him do his job as a reliever.

They should of traded Heilman a year or two ago, when his value was still up. The guy is not happy in the pen, a trade would be best for both parties. Straight up his value is not high, but packages with a couple others, maybe its a nice throw in for a certain team.
I have mentioned before the possibility of Heilman/Evans/prospect for either, Sonnanstine/Jackson on Tampa, or Marquis from the Cubbies? Something like this would help and put this Heilman talk to rest finally.
