According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies will not be re-signing free agent closer Brian Fuentes. Fuentes' likely price tag - three years, $36MM+ - is just too high. Renck believes Fuentes may even be able to snag four years given the poor market for closers after Francisco Rodriguez.
Fuentes' agent listed the Mets, Cardinals, and Angels as interested teams. A meeting with the Mets should come soon. The best case for the Rockies would be the Cardinals, as the Rockies would receive their #19 pick in next year's draft.

There is no way the Cardinals give Fuentes 3 years at 36mil.

due to the fact that billy wagner is out and the mets have other areas to fill with only a significant amount to spend fuentes would fit perfectly while allowing them to sign a pitcher ( derek lowe ) a catcher ( pudge ) a second baseman (orlando hudson) and an outfielder ( raul ibanez )

I believe there is a very good chance the Cards will sign Fuentes. Personally, I am not sure if I am in favor of it if they do. If the terms of the deal are favorable, then I may feel better about it. If not, give the ball to Perez and Motte and see what the kids can do. If you are going to keep them around and not trade them, then they deserve to play to see what you have.

That is news?

Why would the Mets even consider signing Pudge. I just realized you are a Yankee fan, which makes me feel better, since you have been calling guys like Pudge and Laird upgrades at the Mets catcher spot.
The Mets offseason plan should be a simple one. Sign Manny. If not Manny, then go for a Ibanez/Rivera type. Let Murphy play 2B. If his defense becomes too big of a problem, address the situation then. Just have a Loretta/Grudz kind of guy there. Forget about Pudge/Laird whoever. Schneider and Castro are completely capable of platooning behind the plate. Bring back Ollie for a 4/52 deal. Let Heilman/Niese battle for the 5th spot. Parnell/Kunz get a shot at winning a bullpen job. Maybe even Brad Holt sometime mid-season. Sign Juan Cruz. Sign Jeremy Affeldt. Sign Luis Ayala and then try to bring as many arms to ST as you possibly can.
SS Reyes
2B Murphy
CF Beltran
3B Wright
1B Delgado
LF Rivera/Tatis
RF Church/Tatis
C Schneid/Ramon
SP Johan
SP Ollie
SP Pelfrey
SP Maine
SP Heilman/Niese
BP Cruz
BP Ayala
BP Affeldt
BP Show
BP Parnell/Kunz
BP Joe Smith
BP Duaner/Stokes/Niese

The Cardinals will finish now in 3rd place.. wow big signing of they get him
Posted by: cubs land | November 03, 2008 at 03:54 PM
First of all, its pretty obvious the Mets will interview fuentes so only he and K-Rod fit their bill from the free agent market. I still believe fuentes is older and not the calibar of KRod while money wise maybe only a half million dollar difference. KRod should be the guy. Trade from 2 bullpen guys like affeldt, ryan, hudson etc. Try to sign AJ or sign back Perez. Pitching is king. We aint getting Manny for the last time, mets aint gona take his circus and his 25 plus million,no way no how so stop dreaming people. Holliday would be nice but hes expensive and mets have no farm of pitching which the rockies want so thats out of the question already. Hudson aint coming to the mets unless somehow they get rid of castillo. Pitching is what the mets need so they better stop taking these question mark guys.

meant huston street not orlando hudson
Posted by: puremetsfan | November 03, 2008 at 04:00 PM
Holliday would be nice? But you don't want Ramirez? Right.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 03, 2008 at 04:05 PM
The Mets got to upgrade their bullpen, thats all. if they were able to not blow 3 games they would of won their division. The Mets got to think about signing Fuentes and Cruz if they want a chance. They got to stop choking, too. I dot know if they could teach that though.
Posted by: yankfan1 | November 03, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Good post, too bad you ruined it with the whole choking thing. You just prescirbed the perfect way for them to not choke, but then you ruin it because you are a Yankee fan who just can't help it.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 03, 2008 at 04:10 PM
nrmax88, manny would be much nicer than holliday but its just not financially a reality is what i was trying to say. he would take up all the money now unlike hollidays 13mill, not 25-30 million, a small difference id say. pitching doesnt cost 50 cents and holliday aint happening either so it was more philosophy than reality. I never said Im takin one over the other.
Posted by: puremetsfan | November 03, 2008 at 04:14 PM
And speaking of choking, Yankee fans should realize they have choked every year since 2004. You guys remember 2004? Not to start a whole Yankee/Met thing, but in reality, is making the playoffs only to get raped out in the first round of the playoffs every year honestly something to be proud of? Yeah, the Mets have sucked in September for the last 2 years, but the Yankees haven't done dick since 2000 either. Yeah, yeah, I know. 26 WS titles. Blah blah blah. The Yankees are a much better organization then the Mets over the course of history. But that doesnt change the fact that the Yankees have had some of their own issues in the last 5 years or so.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 03, 2008 at 04:15 PM
OK pure. Gotcha. I agree, the pitching is the way to go, but adding a slugging LF would be nice, and the Mets could certainly afford to bring back Perez, sign Manny, and address the bullpen if they wanted. He would also come somewhat short term, and Holliday and his splits, combined with his upcoming free agency, combined with Boras, means I want nothing to do with Matt Holliday.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 03, 2008 at 04:17 PM
manny would at least bring us to the playoffs but too bad it aint happening. Next year the mets will go afta a slugger since delgado and billy 10.5 mill come off the books.

One thing about k-Rod too. For everybody that is all for signign K-rod to a 5/75 deal. Just remember Armando Benitez. K-Rod has had a decrease in his velocity, and increase in his changeup velocity, which can spell arm problems, and he has struggled in the playoffs. No, just no. I agree, he is more talented then Funetes, but Fuentes is the safer bet IMO. I personally wouldn't mind leaving them both alone and building your bullpen as a whole, and not worrying so much about who will pitch the 9th inning.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 03, 2008 at 04:23 PM
krod is really gona get a 5 year around 65 million. 12-13 a year not 15 like everyone thinks. Of course u list the guy higher like real estate and then they think theyre saving when u lower it to like 13 a year. same principles and KROD is yonger which is why i see him as a better fit.
Posted by: puremetsfan | November 03, 2008 at 04:30 PM
It isn't even the money that scares me. It is 5 years. I would give K-Rod 2 years at 30 mil, but for 5 years? Just seems like a risky investment without that much upside.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 03, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Really think the Cardinals are going to be in panic mode this offseason and overspending on a few guys. Best bet would be to groom Motte or Perez for the closer job and sign a few cheaper alternatives and go after Renteria and Hudson for that middle infield.
Redbirds are close to contending but they are also very close to ruining the franchise for a while with a few boneheaded moves.

You know how in the NFL there are running back platoons, some that end up very successful, like LenDale White and Chris Johnson of the Titans or Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward of the Giants? Why can't the Mets have a closer platoon of Brian Fuentes and Juan Cruz, in which Fuentes pitches to a more lefty-heavy 9th inning order and Cruz pitches to one that is righty-heavy? Give Fuentes a longer leash as well.
Then sign Jeremy Affeldt and Bobby Howry, and Voila! A brand-spanking new bullpen.
Cruz RCL
Fuentes LCL
Affeldt SU
Howry 7th
Smith RS
Feliciano LS
Parnell LM

Nobody saw much upside on the tampa bay rays this past offseason and look where they went. Whichever way the mets go its only a closer. they still need a 7th and 8th innning guy and a starting pitcher and possibly a christmas gift of a hitter.
Posted by: puremetsfan | November 03, 2008 at 05:04 PM
I would be totally fine with the Halos signing Fuentes to a 3/36 deal. That would be more than enough time for Arredondo to mature, and it's a reasonable price, IMO
Posted by: bseballcrzy17 | November 03, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Why sign Fuentes at 3/36 when K-Rod will most likely come at 4/50? I don't mind the extra year considering the guy is like 5 years younger than Fuentes.
The only way I would take Fuentes over K-Rod is if the dollars were $3-4m less/year and he could be had a 2 year deal instead of a 5 year deal for K-Rod. Since that isn't going to happen I can't see Fuentes in the Angel's future.

1. The Mets don't need Orlando Hudson. Didn't they already go through this run with Castillo. I don't see it happening. Give the job to Murphy, sign a GOOD bench guy (Nick Punto, Omar Infante) and if it doesn't work out, trade for someone at the deadline.
2. A catcher? Schneider is an improvement over Pudge, not the other way around. He also knows the staff, which Pudge would have to learn, and the upgrade is marginal, if there even is one (and there isn't).
3. The Mets won't go after Raul. They have a lot of money to spend, and they should go after the big dog (i.e. Manny Ramirez).

"I personally wouldn't mind leaving them both alone and building your bullpen as a whole, and not worrying so much about who will pitch the 9th inning."
Agreed. I'd also be worried, with the holes at SP and LF to address, that Omar simply signs one of K-Rod or Fuentes and leaves the bullpen at that, which could lead to problems.

IF - Nick Punto (in case of Murphy)
LF - Juan Rivera (any ideas for platoon)

The Mets don't need a premeire closer as much as they need relievers that can adequately pitch from the 6th-8th innings. The last two years should have taught them that lessen. If they acquire Manny, he could lessen the burden on these guys (translated they would either have bigger leads). Not that I'm advocating that Omar sign him but I wouldn't be against it either. Bradley would be a good fit too. Regardless, they need to shore up the bullpen.
